Build standby database using cold backup on a different file system & host
Hi gurus,
The database version is 11.2.0.3. OS is HP UX Itanium 11.31
I am building a standby database using cold backup of primary. The primary mount points are (/p003/oracle, /p004/oracle) on HOST1 and the standby file system on HOST2 are (/s003/oracle,/s004/oracle). I am not using Data Guard to apply logs as we have a script that mounts the log location periodically to standby server and apply the logs to make it current. I am using cold backup as the database is small like 200G and can be taken down. Could someone help me with the steps to build standby using cold backup for a different file location in standby ?? My concern is I can copy the data files from /p003 to /s003. How will I build the controlfile ?
If it was same File system on both HOST 1 and HOST2 I can copy the cold backup to the standby server, build a standby control file on primary and copy and replace the standby control file and everything was set.
Thanks
Cherrish Vaidiyan
Hello;
I have a note on this using a cold copy of the current files instead of a copy backup :

Recover database using cold backup
Hi All,
One of the table is delete by one of our DBA from PROD accidentally. We have a cold backup on one day before.
Now we are trying to restore it from the cold backup. PROD DB is in archivelog and all the archive is in tact.
The table got truncated today at 8 PM. Can we apply the database till 8 PM so that we can restore the truncated table using cold backup.
Please find the below steps which we are using to restore.
creating controlfile
starting the db in mount state
recover database;
Will it ask for latest archive log when we try to recover it.
ENV details -
DB - 11.2.0.1
Please suggest.
ThanksHi,
If you have doubts about the procedure to use to restore a backup to a point in time, then please take a look at the documentation first: Performing Flashback and Database Point-in-Time Recovery - 11g Release 2 (11.2)
After you specify the time when the recovery must end (UNTIL clause in rman), then the RECOVER command will try to use the archivelogs needed.
Before starting with this PITR operation, you should check if your database has flashback active, because it will be much easier to recover using it.
This is also explained on the same document linked above.
Regards.

Create a standby controlfile using cold backup
Hi All,
We have to setup a DR for a production database.
Here we have the coldbackup which backups all the datafiles and the control file from the production database.
For cloining we generally copy them to another instance and then create controlfile manually. But for setting up as a DR , we would be creating it for standby controlfile.
I tried to google but I am not able to find a way to create a standby controlfile from the existing controlfile cold backup.
OS version solaris 10 , database version 11.2.0.1
Regards

Create standby database using restore backup
Hi,
I am creating a standby database 11g using manual process of restoring a backup , but to no avail. I can not even restore the backup successfully.
This is the steps I followed (courtesy of ORACLE-BASE) ORACLE-BASE - Data Guard Physical Standby Setup in Oracle Database 11g Release 2
I am confused about these steps:
Copy the files from the primary to the standby server.
Copy Standby controlfile to all locations.
$ scp oracle@ol5-112-dga1:/tmp/db11g_stby.ctl /u01/app/oracle/oradata/DB11G/control01.ctl
$ cp /u01/app/oracle/oradata/DB11G/control01.ctl /u01/app/oracle/fast_recovery_area/DB11G/control02.ctl
My question is, for the 2nd copy, do I need to shutdown the primary db? since control01.ctl is being updated all the time?
Can I not used the standby ctl (db11g_stbg.ctl) and copy it to /u01/app/oracle/fast_recovery_area/DB11G/control02.ctl instead?
Your assistance is highly appreciated.f55237a7-2c38-4db3-a7a3-1d77256f0730 wrote:

Hi,
You are created standby control file on primary and copied to standby side:
$ scp oracle@ol5-112-dga1:/tmp/db11g_stby.ctl /u01/app/oracle/oradata/DB11G/control01.ctl
And now, in paramter files, you have CONTROL_FILES parameter as below :
control_files='/u01/app/oracle/oradata/DB11G/control01.ctl', '/u01/app/oracle/fast_recovery_area/DB11G/control02.ctl'
it means you must copy controlfile IN standby side to second control file. Control files must be same.
$ cp /u01/app/oracle/oradata/DB11G/control01.ctl /u01/app/oracle/fast_recovery_area/DB11G/control02.ctl
My question is, for the 2nd copy, do I need to shutdown the primary db? since control01.ctl is being updated all the time?
You not need shutdown priamry database, becuase you copied standby control file to standby side, and all operations goin in standby side.
Can I not used the standby ctl (db11g_stbg.ctl) and copy it to /u01/app/oracle/fast_recovery_area/DB11G/control02.ctl instead?
Yes, you can use (db11g_stbg.ctl) standby controlfile

Do I need to use standby database in begin backup mode to take the backup?
Hi All,
I have a 10g(10.2.0.4) primary database with standby on a solaris platform. I need to create another standby database for the same primary.
I have stopped the recovery on existing standby database and started copying(os copy) the files from existing standby to 2nd standby server. However I haven't kept the existing standby database(mounted) in begin backup mode. Is it okay?
Thanks,

Database cloning using cold backup
Hello Guys,
I am doing cloning of a database from cold backup for testing, actully one datafile has been croupted, so my issue is that, can i exclude tht datafile from controlfile when creating the controlfile and is that poosible that controlfile will created sucessfully and database will open sucessfully.
Please reply.
Thanks@asif, @ckpt
With humble, how all you know that corrupted datafile is not belonging to system and undo tablespace? If this case, then do you think we can restore that corrupted cold-backup ? Sorry, but this is not the way to just start providing help without asking OP :
1.Current Oracle Version ?
2.Where he want to restore i.e. restoring platform info Oracle version OS ?
3.After cold backup how he came to know that one datafile is corrupted ?
4.When and how datafile became corrupted ?
5.How he taken cold backup ? Was db running fine just before shut immediate for cold backing ?
6.What he has done so far to restore the cold backup ?
7.What error he is getting right now ?
Here problem is corrupted datafile. So, first let come problem clear from OP, ask all missing question in one go, and then start helping is the right way... (my personal opinion, may be wrong!).

Creating standby database using data guard.
Current Env:
Oracle 11.2.0.1
ASM
Size 1.7T and growing.
I'm rebuilding a standby database and need to use rman because of a few factors. In the past, I did a file copy create a standby control file config init.ora and it always worked.
We have a database and had the stanby build; but someone issued a flashback and corrupted the standby database.
Because of the size 1.7T and growing and we are now using ASM.
My research is only showing building standby through rman using dupicate database command.
I would like to copy the cold backup to a external drive and ship it to the standby site where I'll do the restore. This is because of time and bandwith required to rebuild the standby will interfere with operaitions for the period the files are being copied.
So what would be the high level steps.
1) get the cold backup
2) create the standby control file
3) ship the data via corrier
4) restore the database
5) and this is where i'm not sure. recover the standby control file - but during the restore of the database the "normal" control file will open and perhaps do a checkpoint. therefore the standby controlfile will be usless.
6) recover the standby database.
Has anyone accomplished this?
As much specifics will be helpful. This system is operational and needs to be done right the first time.
thanks,
-RobThank you.
1) I'm going to off load the cold backup to an external drive and have a courier take it to the DR site.
Why, we are replicating the SAN over to the DR site. When SAN replication backs up Oracle becomes non-responsive. Therefore; sending the data over the pipe is not an option for the standby rebuild. Yea' that's the easy way to do it. But this system is operational and critical to operations; so we will not risk saturating the pipe for any period of time. The pipe got saturated one time and it was not pretty.
2) I'm running the test in my lab to make sure I can create the standby database using the cold backup and rman.
3) In the past it was easy; I got a cold backup of the data files using the same ksh scripts that have been working for 20 years. Copy the files over to the standby site, and put it into managed recovery. This technique has been working fine sense Oracle 8i days. ASM through a huge monkey wrench in the ksh script backup and now I'm forced to use rman. Hey, I'm told it's an okay product but when it comes to backups I never get fancy; that just makes things more complicated. Okay I wont complain about asm anymore, i guess there is an advantage in there somewhere.

Standby database from RMAN backup
I have been assigned to create a standby database from our RMAN backups in a different machine, as this is my first attempt at recovering, I am struggling a bit. I would appreciate if someone can throw any light on what dumb mistakeI am doing here. I ahve absolutely no control over the back up script which is done by my vendor, but can do anything in the reocvery portion. I did try going through the documentaiton and other help available for the last 2 days.
Database : Oracle 10G R2
OS : Windows Server 2003
My backup script is
configure channel device type disk format 'J:\RMAN\RMAN_df_%U' maxpiecesize 2048M;
SQL "ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE";
SQL "ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE";
backup database;
SQL "ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE";
SQL "ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE";
backup current controlfile for standby FORMAT='J:\RMAN\RMAN_sc_%U';
For recovery of a standby database,
I have copied the the back up pieces and the archive logs to the standby server where I have just created an instance with the same name as production db.

I don't see ArchiveLog backups being done by the vendor's script. How do you backup the ArchiveLogs ?
In your post you state that you have copied the ArchiveLogs. Are they copied to the same log_archive_dest location ? RMAN needs to be "aware" of them. You can use the "CATALOG" command in RMAN to register them into the controlfile.

Upgrade 10.2 to 11.2 manualy using cold backup copy on new server.
Hi,
I am going to manually upgrade my databases to 11.2 from 10.2. I will use cold backup of 10.2 and copy in to the new server Red Hat Linux 5.
I got a Note (742108.1) done for upto 10.2.0.5 and it tells to set
orapwd file=$oracle_HOME/dbs/orapw<SID>
But my upgrade path is 10.2 to 11.2 and i would like to verify whether i need to do the same before startup in upgrade mode?? Nothing mention regarding this in Upgrade Guideline. Just telling only to copy password file to $oracle_HOME/dbs/
if so how i set it ? i mean in $ prompt or SQL Prompt?I have 10 databases in one server and 2 seperate servers. I will do 3 changes mainly 32 bit to 64 bit, Suse Linux 9 to red Hat Linux 5 and 10.2.0.4 to 11.2.0.1
So best path to do all at once is cold backup and i verified it from oracle Support as well. because 32 bit o 64 bit conversion will automatically happend when upgrade.
My databses are nearly 300GB each and not much big . use for datawarehouse.
