Building a Search Engine

Please someone help me!
I am about to start work on a Martial Arts Search Engine. I need
information on how to go about building one, i think I have a fair idea but
don't want to get started and find out i've done it all wrong! :o)
It will be developed on UNIX (Apache WebServer) using CGI in the form of C
using Oracle hopefully, i am very familiar with C and ProC (accessing Oracle
from C) and PL/SQL (packages held on the database). Been working for
British Telecom for the past year developing a massive billing system with
all that.
The only problem is, I don't know if thats how to design and develop a
search engine.
I need information on the following:
search engine methods and technologies
CGI with C/Perl (maybe)
Security with CGI!
Oracle optimisation
And really just about everything else i could do with knowing to develop a
search engine.
any sites you may know of please point me in the right direction.
Thankyou to you all.

  • How to build a search engine in the database?

    Hi there,
    say I have 3 tables:
    1. Table_empl: idEmpl, fname, lname, dob...
    2. table_department: idDpartment, idEmpl, departmentName, section...
    3. table_fligths: idFlight, idEmapl, departure date, destination, carrier...I would like to provide the end-user a text box (in my GUI) where he can write whatever he would like to get info about. If, for example, he'll write: british-airways, I expect the system to search everything in the db that matches this input.
Question: How can I design such a search engine that retrieve information from every possible table in the db with reference to every column.
    thanks for any pointers

thanks darted for your reply. so what do you recommend? should i give the end user all names of tables and columns and ask him to choose from the list and than build a query based on that?
this is optional but i'd rather have one exec button and to return all possible results from the db. if (in the example i provided) it found 'british airways' in the carrier - than that a result. if it founds 'british' in the lname of table_emple - that's another result. so the output should be something like:
    found 2 matches:
    1. british airways, 10/10/2006, LHR
    2. British, John, 12/01/63,
any idea how to build that?

  • Search engin, JSP or swing Application

    Hello,
i want to build a search engin(like Google) on a special archive ,the question: is swing endurance the load of all search results to display it or there will be any problems in displaying, thus ,it is preferable to using ordinary web page.
    thanks

A search engine usually has two pieces. One piece gathers the data and organizes it so it can be searched. The other piece queries that data and presents the results. Many times a database is used to store the searchable data. For a fairly complex set of searchable data, the limiting factor is usually the speed of the data search. It really doesn't matter if the user interface is C, Java or Fortran.

  • Website search engine

Hello, I was wondering how to build a search engine to search
inside a website like the Yahoo shopping website has with the
possibility to select a department and have the product from the
search displayed on a nice page?
    http://shopping.yahoo.com/
Anybody could help me or tell me where to look for
    that?

Both of these get recommended often in this newsgroup.

  • How to build custom search using API - 10.1.2

    Hi,
I have been looking through some documentation and i can't seem to find how to use the API in portal 10.1.2 to create a custom search. Any help or samples would be appreicated.
    Thanks

The Search API is a new feature in 10.1.4. In older version a custom search portlet was provided, no API.
    <br><br>
You can build a search engine yourself in Portal 10.1.2 by using the Oracle Text API. The search engine should implement security however which can be quit difficult to accomplish. It is not impossible however.
    <br><br>
In most cases it is has less impact to upgrade to release 10.1.4 then to build a search engine yourself. My advice would be to install 10.1.4 on a test system and play around with the new search API. You can then decide whether it is worthwhile to upgrade to 10.1.4 where you profit from several nice new features.

  • Internal search engine

I have a client that wants to add a search engine to a retail
showroom. I'd like it function similar to JCPenney or LandsEnd
where you can type a style of product or exact product number. A
product type search would result in a page of pictures that match
the criteria. I've had suggestions like CoffeeCup which appear to
be only Windows compatible. I don't mind purchasing some software
to do this but really not interested in paying a service to do it
for me on a monthly basis. Is there anything out there compatible
for Mac or is there another way within Dreamweaver CS3?

Building a search facility that requires JavaScript could be
    a mistake - and
one that could expose a retail client to ADA (or similar)
    claims.

  • Remove built-in search-engines in Firefox Nightly

I don't use the default Firefox search-engines, so I like to be able to delete all the Amazon, Twitter, Google nativelly installed on every Firefox version. Using current and beta version of Firefox, I am able to remove built-in search-engines on the Android version, simply from the add-ons manager and disable the search-engine.
However, on the last Nightly build, the search-engines can not be found in the add-ons manager. My phone is not rooted, so I'm not able to directly set the search-engines list by editing the files or removing it through the search-engines list. Can't find a property in `about:config` either...

The root solution is useful but not everybody is root and this search engines re-ordering function seems to be pretty basic. However, I'm sure there is a lot of reasons for having remove it since pas versions.

  • How can I do a search engine in a digital publishing?

    Hi,
I need to do something like a search engine in a catalogue with so many pages.
    How can I do?
    Kind Regards.

For what I have understood some time ago, what Bob means says is that DPS nowadays lacks the ability of indexing content and its precise location in the app. No native indexing.
So, to achieve something like that you have to build that content  in HTML and build some kind of index that points to the precise location of each item to be retrieved and them make that work with the needed buttons and form fields and...
Something to be done with HTML and coding so that this can be inserted and retrieved in the app built with DPS. It's like building an enclosed HTML site and then embed it into DPS.
    Is it so, Bob?

  • TS1398 my sons ipad 1 is not loading videos when he goes on to youtube through   his search engine (hes not on safari as he is on a parental restriction search engine) but has been able to for the last 12 months until the other day.

My son has an ipad 1 and goes on to you tube through his search engine (which is not safari as i have put a parental restriction search engine on there for him) and up until a few days ago was working fine. now when ever he goes into youtube the video selections come up but when he presses a video to watch it doesn't load (comes up with the loading icon). However i wanted to see if this was a youtube problem so I unrestricted his youtube app and tried to get into youtube that way and it worked and the videos loaded. Does anybody know why it wouldn't work through his search engine now after working through it for so long?
Any help would be great as i dont mind him going on youtube as long as innappropriate content is filtered (which is what his search engine did).
    Thankyou

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • How do I add a search engine?

Safari features Google and Yahoo as search engines. Is it possible to add my favourite search engine to them? If so, how?

No, it is not possible. These search engine are build in Safari executable file. However you can have your own search engines made as Bookmaklets: https://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/
