Building/editing topology diagrams - any ideas/advice?

Hi,
I'd like to build a web application that is capable of displaying & editing topology diagram (e.g. a network diagram with applications too). Effectively to have a graphically web based means of allowing a user to add nodes & relationships to represent a topology such as the following [http://performancepointinsider.com/files/planning/planningtopology.png|http://performancepointinsider.com/files/planning/planningtopology.png] . So the model basically consists of nodes and relationships.
Any ideas/advice on how best to do this, e.g.:
Q1. Any open-source project that does something similar?
Q2. Best way of handling the graphical aspect of the application?
(e.g. prototype, extjs, etc?)

I want to build topology diagrams in Flex 2. Is it possible? Are there any prototypes like TWaver built on Flex 2? Twaver is built on Flex 3 and i cant use it on Flex Builder 2....
P.S: I dont have Flex 3 SDK or Flex Builder 3 and i cant even avail it any time sooner.

First make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.

3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

Studio expanding network editing capacity. Any pointers/advice?

I hope to catch some of you who know your IT as well as your editing!
I've been helping to grow the network infrastructure of a small studio, who are seeing an increasing requirement for space and performance and support for more edit desks, and I wondered if any of you might have any suggestions about my ideas below?
This is how things are at the moment (simplified):
Performance is sufficient, and things seem pretty balanced.
Idea A is to build a new storage server - a clone of the 1st, in order to spread the eggs into more baskets so to speak. If day to day the use is split over the 2 servers, there will be less bottlenecking at each one.
But there is a question of Media Cache. Our media cache is currently on the main server which also helps reduce load on the media storage array and means it doesn't need to be generated and duplicated as people hot-desk, and also saves storage in the backup (the entire volume is backed up nightly).
Media Cache would remain on one of these.
Idea B is to build a new server solely for Media Cache, and create more storage on the original server.
My question about idea B would be - in a general edit scenario with say 500gb of footage, what is accessed more, the original media or the cache?
Even if it's 50/50 in cache/media, a separate cache server would seem pretty beneficial (and cheaper).
I suppose another option is a combination of the 2 ideas - 2 media servers and a cache server.
What do you guys think?

XML editing from flash, any idea, suggestion

I have created for a client a website dynamically loaded with
XML formatted content (XML Files), now the client wants to be able
to edit the contents of its site (CMS), the site displays several
things but more specifically a list of products, which you can see
by browsing the "PRODUCT RANGE" section of
http://www.cellap.com/.
I planned to use a php to rewrite the XML with the edited
data sent from the flash (oldData, newData), it works fine, except
that there are several problems:
-I use the "ereg_replace" command of PHP, which seems not to
handle correctly special charachters such as "*"...
-If the php is told to replace i.e. "FACE" with "FIGURE", it
will replace it everywhere on the XML, which is not what I want; so
maybe I'm not using the right technique; I know it'd be more easy
to do if the content was on a MySQL database, but the client wanted
XML, to be able to browse the site offline...
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Our InDesign seems to have lost the ability to open/edit PDFs. Any idea on why this might have happened or how to fix it?

We had to install InDesign CS6 recently on a Windows 8 machine and after using the program successfully for a few days/weeks the user noted that she can no longer open/edit PDFs. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how I can fix it. If I uninstall and re-install the program will I be able to use my existing license?

InDesign has never been able to open or edit PDFs. Illustrator can do it, after a fashion, but unless the PDF was created in Illustrator, and contain the original Illustrator file information, it's not a great idea.
PDF was designed as an end-format, and is not really intended for further editing.

After doing software update to 5.1.1 on iPad1 the photo feature doesn't have edit button. Any idea how to fix?

The edit button for photos is alive and well in iOS 5.1.1. There is no logical reason, why you would not have the edit button. When you open an individual picture in Photos on your iPad, the Edit button should be at the top on the right hand side. If you don't touch the picture for a few seconds all command buttons disappear until you touch the screen again.

My clips are pausing at edit points. Any idea why?

Hi, I'm editing some quicktime (.mov) footage that I have ripped from a domestic DVD camcorder in FCP 7. It plays fine and there are no issues with the quality. However, when I cut the footage and move it alongside another clip, it pauses at the edit point and then continues. It will then pause at the next edit point and so on. Why is it doing this? Are my settings out? I've checked them out and they seem ok. When I move a clip away from being adjacent to another clip it plays fine. It just doesn't like having neighbours. Is this a common problem and is there a simple fix for it? Please advise.
p.s. My apologies if this isn't written in the correct format. This is my first post.

I ripped the footage as a QT mov using H.264 codec at a bit rate of 2,500. The resolution is 720 x 480.
My FCP set up is - DV Pal 48khz. This is my usual setting and normally welcomes QT movies.
Do you think I need to change my settings? Or do I need to convert the source footage?
Your advise would be appreciated.

Effects panel is not working on editable text? Any ideas on how to fix this?

Trouble shooting this with even starting with a new box and still having the problem.

In order to apply Effects to text, Muse needs to rasterize the text into an image. Therefore, Effects on text will only works if you have chosen a System Font or if you have rotated your text - both of which force the text to be rasterized. The ability to select an Effect for Web Fonts or Web Safe Fonts depends on browser compatibility which is not equal for all browser platforms as compatibility with CSS on browsers is something which Muse cannot control within its design , We allow users to apply it to text using System Fonts because we are already rasterizing the text frame.
If you want effect on the text frame you have to add a stroke.

Building Topology Diagrams in Flex 2

Hi All,
I want to build a topology diagram in Flex 2. Is it possible? I wanna have a set of images which cud be drag - drop enabled. I should be able to link the different nodes in the hierarchy based on its status with Arrows(different kinds). And each node(represented by diff images) will have its own set of properties (could be referred from the database.). How do i go about doing this. Awaiting your suggestions and possible links to such existing prototypes.

Topology diagrams - advice on doing this type of work?

I'm considering a contract position where I'd be doing topology diagrams and maps..Can anyone who has done or is doing this type of work offer any suggestions/advice for making this work go well?
And I'm thinking along the lines of maybe...re-useable geometry...I suppose swatching for colors and styles for objects...just thinking out loud here..
I'm sure that after awhile, I'll develop my own work patterns for this..might be nice to see if anyone has any "tips and tricks" to share.

well I resonate with your questions...so far, I don't have all the granular details, but I have to think that I'll be given some standards, and I know that I will produce this art from supplied sketches.
I did google this and found that the spectrum went from playful/whimsical (think: kid's textbook) to the more serious and accurate, just a few steps short of full-on cartography.
I don't yet know where this client falls on that spectrum.
Probably be a good idea for me to develop a list of questions for them, maybe request some links so that I can see what ball park I'll be working in.

Graph/Diagram editor.. any ideas?

I am writing a simple program where the user should be able to manipulate (add, delete, rename, move etc) the nodes ("points") and edges ("lines connecting the points") of a graph / diagram. Do you have any ideas to help me and which should be the best way to do this ?
My idea so far is to write a class that models a node and another class that models an edge and these classes have color, background, labels, location on the screen as attributes. The node class also has a method called draw(Graphics g) which draws the node on the screen. Same for the edge class. However, I also want to have some sort of action listening...when the user clicks on a node or an edge an event should triggered.. Do you have any ideas on how to do this ?

So what's your opinion on the code below ?
and how do I give this component the ability to have action listener so that I can say later in my code something like node.addActionListener(...).

I was editing photos and it was getting stuck or frozen and working really slow, so I attempting to close aperture and reopen it but it won't quit aperture and now it won't open up to my photos either. Any ideas?

Did you try opening from the Applications folder?
Depending on how far that gets you, I would also take a look at the Troubleshooting Basics.
