Building Views vs Multiple sources as Logical tables

I am building logical tables that could have many physical sources. Is there any benefit to making a single view and using it as a single source?

hi,
Always is better to do things in database, for many reasons....
1.performance
2.maintenace....
My opinion is better to do a final fact table which contains data from all the sources..and use this table as your fact table in the bussiness solution.not view, not many sources. You can make aggregates tables, put indexes and in generall is more simple and it contains all the benefits of a STAR SCHEMA..
hope i helped...

    Or more generally speaking:
To create a "logical table" consisting of multiple "physical tables"...hence the names. It's the backbone of the whole BI server concept and the way the rpd handles the requests.
I.e.: how would you otherwise proceed for making an analyzable table from SAP, Teradata, Oracle and a flat file with no full change-access to all the data sources?

  • Multiple sources for Logical Tables

The order of the sources in the logical table(in case of multiple sources) will it affect the query results??

    Hi,
OBIEE pick the LTS using this algorithm:
    1) every logical fact table is set to a dimension level, every level in the dimension has a number of elements at that level
    2) OBIEE multiply for every LTS all the numbers of elements defined for a specific LTS
    3) OBIEE pick the LTS that has the lower valure (like a cost of access, it picje the most aggregated table)
    4) if there are multiple LTS with the same cost, OBIEE choses the first in order of defiition

  • How to "think" use of multiple logical table sources

    Hi everybody,
i'm new to OBIEE and its paradigm. I'm trying to build a prototype with multiple physical sources: ERD and a Data Mart; I need OBIEE to go to the Data Mart model at the need of aggregated info and to go to the relational model at the need of transactional info. I need to do that working with dimensions, assigning different sources to each logical level of the dimension.
My problem begins when thinking how to actually do that. Here is my question:
    - Should I add the relational source in the data mart logical table source folders, mapping the same information with joins? If so, how does dimensions work from that point? (drill down)
    thanks in advance!

    I'm a little confused
    Is the problem
1 - You want to Access a table in an existing 9i database from a different 10g database
    or
2 - You have a new 10g database as a copy of a 9i one, and a table called system has gone missing?

  • Problem: 1 physical table -- multiple logical table sources

    Hi,
I'm quite new to BIEE and setting up my repository.
So I have a question, if the following scenario is possible:
    Physical Layer: TABLE_A: COL_A, COL_B, COL_C
    TABLE_B: COL_D, COL_E, COL_F
    Join TABLE_A.COL_A = TABLE_B.COL_D
In Business Model I have a Dimension Table with TABLE_A as datasource with fields DIM1 (COL_B).
The Fact Table (MEASURE) would have twice TABLE_B as data source with different where-clauses on COL_F and logical table columns (ATT1 and ATT2) of value COL_E.
So far I have created everything and the consistency check shows no errors or warnings, but I get an error in Answer: Incorrectly defined logical table source (for fact table MEASURE) does not contain mapping for [MEASURE.ATT1, MEASURE.ATT2], when I creating an report showing DIM1, ATT1, ATT2.
Isn't it possible to have one physical column used as multiple data source?
I know it 's working, when I create the physical table twice ... but maybe there's a solution for business model.
    Thanks
    chrissy

    Hi mengesh,
that's what I also tried, but it's always returning me the same error.
I know it would work, when I import the physical table twice or more, but that's not what I want to do, because at the end I have 10 or more fields based on this one physical table. There's one field indicating what value is contained in the record, this means:
    COL_F | COL_E
    1 | customer name
    2 | customer number
    3 | customer branche
    4 | salesman
    5 | date
    6 | report number
    etc.
I don't think it's usefull to import the physical table as often as I need this field. So I want to divide it in business model.
    thanks

  • Multiple Data Sources In One Logical Table

I am new to OBIEE and I have came accross an issue. I appologize if this information is in the forum somewhere but I have searched and cannot find it.
My situation is that I would like to have one logical table that contains multiple data sources which have all the same columns. I already have session variables setup to differentiate the user's security through a row-wise variable for a specific column and a session variable for another column which determines the user's association to the data source in which they belong to. This security works well when the data sources are seperated in the Business Model and Mapping portion but the issue that arises is that the user's cannot share reports when the data sources are seperated in the BM&M.
I have dragged and dropped a table from the Physical model to the BM&M, I then dragged the second data source (with same meta data structure) over to the "Sources" folder in the first data source table in the BM&M. On the Content tab or each data source table I have defined the WHERE clause as such, where VALUEOF(NQ_SESSION."SCHOOL") session variable is my row-wise column filter and the VALUEOF(NQ_SESSION."GROUP") filter is my data source determinative:
    sandbox."".SANDBOX.OBIEE_CROSS_ENROLLMENTS.HOME_SCHOOL = VALUEOF(NQ_SESSION."SCHOOL") AND sandbox."".SANDBOX.OBIEE_CROSS_ENROLLMENTS.DATA_SOURCE = VALUEOF(NQ_SESSION."GROUP")
Unfortunatley this only returns values in the BI Answers for the first drag and drop Pysical table in the BM&M layer and not the second Physical table drug into the "Sources" folder. I have also tried to create a new logical table and drag both tables into the "Sources" folder to no avail. I have experimented with the Fragmentation content on the "Content" tab of the seperate logical tables, checking the "This source should be combined with other sources at this level", which gives me an error in BI Answers that a column does not exist which really does.
What could I be missing? Advanced thanks to those who reply.
    Thank you,
    Kyle

    Stijn,
Thank you for the article link. That was very helpful! It seems that I had a few things off as you do need the "This source should be combined with other sources at this level." checked. In my two table source columns for DATA_SOURCE I defined a literal ('086496' and '085597' for the other) in the Column Mapping tab. I pasted the following in the Fragmentation content, checking the "This source..." box on the Content tab:
    eSIS.SANDBOX4_SCHOOLS.DATA_SOURCE = '086496'
And pasted the following into the WHERE clause, checking "Select distinct values" on the Content tab:
    sandbox4."".OBIEE.NWOCA_SCHOOLS.SCHOOL_CODE = VALUEOF(NQ_SESSION."SCHOOL") AND sandbox4."".OBIEE.NWOCA_SCHOOLS.DATA_SOURCE = VALUEOF(NQ_SESSION."GROUP")
This took care of my user's security, utilizing the session variables in the WHERE clause. I am now able to generate reports that only one user can access from one data source and share that same report with another user who can only see data from the other data source.
    Many thanks!!!

  • Multiple Logical Table Sources In BMM Under 1 Logical Table In OBIEE 11g

I have a question and even after doing a lot of search on google i could not find any article so through to ask you :-
I want to create a Logical Dimension table
This logical dimension has columns coming from 2 different physical tables, TableA and TableB. The relationship between TableA to TableB is 1 to zero.
There are 2 ways to create the logical dimension :-
    1) Go to the logical table source properties of TableA-->then there + sign click and then add TableB right outer join with tableA.
Here in the logical table source we see only one table tableA.
    2) Drag the tableB column so that we have 2 logical table source.
Please try this to explain without using the concept of fragmentation and without considering the fact tables. I have this question for simple logical dimension tables only.
I wanted to know which is the right way and what requirement/factor decides what to do ?

    Check this post
Business Model - Logical Table Source
    Let me know for Qs.
If helps mark as correct :)

  • Multiple Logical Table Sources vs Single Logical Table Source

OBIEE 11g. I am totally confused. Can someone help me with the following for me.
I have seen logical table sources being used in 2 ways. I have a 2 sources tables: CUSTOMER & ADDRESS. In physical layer these 2 tables are linked by CUSTOMER _ID in a 1:M relationship.  i.e. A customer can have many addresses.
Scenario # 1: In BMM the two tables form a logical table called CUSTOMER with 2 different logical table sources which are CUSTOMER & ADDRESS.
Scenario # 2: In BMM the two tables form a logical table called CUSTOMER with 1 logical table source called CUSTOMER only.
What is the difference between the above 2 scenarios and which one is better to use when creating the logical table source.
    Regards.

Scenario # 1: In BMM the two tables form a logical table called CUSTOMER with 2 different logical table sources which are CUSTOMER & ADDRESS.
-->In this case; based on the columns select source is defined in the physical query
possible case would be CUSTOMER , ADDRESS, and CUSTOMER & ADDRESS
    -->Used in DE-normalized scenarios
--> BI uses intelligence based on content tab settings
Scenario # 2: In BMM the two tables form a logical table called CUSTOMER with 1 logical table source called CUSTOMER only.
-->In this case; CUSTOMER properties->General tab used both CUSTOMER & ADDRESS, in your physical query both tables present irrespective of column selection
    -->Used in normalized scenarios
-->Forcing BI to follow our way, since we wont set content tab settings
    Hope this helps

  • Financial Analytics -- Multiple logical table sources

we have two logical sources for Fact table. The two sources are Aggreates - one is at Invoice level and other one is at Supplier level. Each column in the fact is the derived column and is getting mapped to both the tables. My problem is when i use supplier name and invoice amount and other fact columns data , one of the fact column comes as Zero even though the back end query that BI server is firing is returning expected result. But some how when it comes on the report the data becomes zero. This doesnot happen when we specifically add a filter on the table at lower level of Aggregation (Invoice). This tells Bi server to fetch the data from table lower level of Aggregation .
The RPD that we are using is OOTB.

    -->Used in DE-normalized scenarios
    -->Used in normalized scenarios
-->Forcing BI to follow our way, since we wont set content tab settings
    Hope this helps

  • A question about the multiple source table for the logical table

    Hi All,
I am to test, having two physical sources for an logical table, but it is failing as it is always getting data from only one table rather than two tables.
Any suggestion or inputs would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Siva

your 2 measure columns are in the same unique - low level??
    your connections look good.
which is the result if you bring only the sales column at your report??is it the sum of the 2 datasources??
try to repass again all your bussiness model.or make an other one.
fisrt pass your fact with 2 sources and then your dimensions....
as i can see you have customer_dim,do both of your columns have the appropriate key to this dimension??try to make a physical connection from both fact sources to this dimension as well as for time...
if you do it in this way ,there is no possibility not to work
    hope i helped...

  • Aggregation on multiple Logical table source

I have mapped two logical table source(LTS) to a measure.
Sum needs to be used for Essbase LTS and count distinct needs to be used for Oracle DB.
Is there any option to set aggregation on LTS level?
    Thanks,

    Interesting!!
We may not set aggregate tab based on LTS but you may try this:
Do not use the aggregate tab, during the creation of metric using physical sources and use count distinct for Oracle db and sum for other.
You should see 2 different expressions in 'Data Type' tab->Mapped as
Note: I didnt tested it let me know updates.

  • Incorrectly defined logical table sources

    Hi
I have a scenario similar to the following
I have 2 fact tables and one conformed dimension
    Fact1 has columns
    1.Custid
    2.valueid
    Customerdim has columns
    1.Custid
    2.Customername
    Fact2 has columns
    1.custid
    2.valuename
i created joins in the physical layer has
    customerdim-------->Fact1(one to many)
    Customerdim------->Fact2(one to many)
i created complex in business model layer also same as above
and in answers i selected the following columns for the report
    Fact1.valueid,customerdim.custid,fact2.valuename.
i got a incorretly defined logical tablesource error.there is no corresponding mapping in fact2
    pls help
    regards
    mervin

    Hi Mervin,
The reason why you get this error is because the bmm layer is not built on a simple star schema.
Assuming OBIEE expects its bmm layer to be in a pure dimensional model, you MUST have a star schema in which all associated fields must exists in available fact tables, thus the concept of multiple sources mapped to a single logical table arise.
    In your case you have:
    dimension
fact1 ..........fact2 it does not view all the relationships exist in fact table. assume the diagram without dots.
to accomplish this try squeezing fact into any of the logical dimension table and join them within this logical dimension.
create a logical fact table by connecting it to dimension table through a complex join.
note: the model changes if the complexity involved in the model changes.
    thanks

  • [ADF Help] How to create a view for multiple tables

    Hi,
I am using Jdeveloper 11G and ADF framework, and trying to create a view to update multiple tables.
    ex:
Table A has these fields: ID, Name
Table B has these fields: ID, Address
A.ID and B.ID are primary keys.
B.ID has FK relationship with A.ID
(basically, these tables have one-to-one relation)
I want to create a view object, which contains these fields: B.ID (or A.ID), A.Name, B.Address.
So I can execute C,R,U,D for both tables.
I create these tables in DB, and create entity objects for these tables.
So there are 2 entity objects and 1 association.
Then I create a view object based on B and add fields of A into the view:
If the association is not a "Composition Association",
when I run the model ("Oracle Business Component Browser") and try to insert new data, fields of A can't edit.
If the association is a "Composition Association", and click the insert button, I will get
"oracle.jbo.InvalidOwnerException: JBO-25030: Failed to find or invalidate owning entity"
If I create a view object based on A and add filed of B into the view:
When I run the model and try to insert new data, fields of B can't edit, no matter the association is or is not a composition association.
So... how can I create a view for multiple tables correctly?
    Thanks for any advices!
Here are some pictures about my problem, if there is any unclear point, please let me know.

    Hi Branislav,
Thanks, but the result is same ....
In the step 2 of creating view object, I can select entity objects to be added in to the view.
If I select A first, and then select B (the "Source Usage" of B is A), then finishing the wizards.
When I try to create a new record in the view, I can't edit any properties of B (those files are disabled).
If I select B first, and then select A in crating view object, the result is similar ...
    Thanks for any further suggestion.
