C++ Code in kernel modules

Is it possible to load kernel modules into Solaris
that contain C++ code? If so, what compile/linker
options are required to make this happen?Hello.
Yes. The kernel modules are independent of programming language as long as the object file format is correct. So C++ will work.
There are two kinds of problems:
1) The init, fini and info functions must have the same name as in other programming languages. This is a problem in C++ because C++ adds data type information to symbol names in the object files. This means a function named "int x(int)" would have the symbol name "x" when using C/x86 or just "x" when using C/Sparc while it may have a symbol name like "1_xII" when using C++ (the actual symbol name depends on the C++ compiler used).
To solve this problem you may use the 'extern "C"' statement or write a simple assembler wrapper function.
2) Normally C++ requires a large run-time library. One example for this is the "new" operator. You'll have to write a replacement for this run-time library. So if you want to use the "new" operator you'll have to provide a function named "operator new(int size)" (or something like that). This is true for ALL C++ operators (delete, new[], delete[], ...).

Copliling Solaris kernel module code in 64bit for AMD64
Hi,
I have solaris10 OS in my HP ProLiant DL-145 server machine
I m using SunStudio C compiler (cc) for compling my kernel module source code. My code is successfully work in 32bit kernel mode. But when i boot the OS in 64bit mode & complile the same code , then no error during compliaion & linking. but my module doesn't work. When i add two flags
-xarch=amd64 -xmodel=kernel , then also no error during compilation, but module still not work.
I want to know , how i can complie my soruce code successfully in 64bit kernel for AMD64, so that it can be loaded successfully through modload command.
I think i need some other flags for that, pls help.from
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-5789/6ml7kh1b4?q=amd64&a=view
Compiling with Sun Studio
Use the -D_KERNEL option to indicate that this code defines a kernel module.
If you are compiling for a 64-bit x86 architecture, use both the -xarch=amd64 option and the -xmodel=kernel option:
% cc -D_KERNEL -xarch=amd64 -xmodel=kernel -c mydriver.c
% ld -r -o mydriver mydriver.o

[S]Systemd can't start Load Kernel Modules after upgrade to Linux 4.0
After upgrading from linux 3.19.3-3 to 4.0.1-1 I've been having a bit of an issue. At that same time I upgraded readline (6.3.006-1 → 6.3.008-1), linux-firmware (20150206.17657c3-1 → 20150410.ec89525-1), nvidia (349.16-1 → 349.16-2) , wpa_suplican (2.4-1 → 1:2.3-1), and arpack (3.1.5-1 → 3.2.0-1). There may be some typos there since I'm copying by hand. Normally this wouldn't be much of a problem because I have been, priory to a few weeks ago, really good about back ups and would just roll my OS back 15 minutes. But things like that tend to fly out the window when the semester gets heavy. My last snapshot was on May 22nd, which I could still use, but would rather not. Also, it seems like a good idea to try to actual fix things for a change.
[edit] I should mention that this upgrade was run April 30th.[/edit]
When I finished booting the system after the upgrade, I got an error message during boot “systemd[1]: Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.” When it finished booting I run “dmesg -l err” to confirm that I'm not having a bad day dream or something. I'm also still seeing the errors that I described in this thread. Don't know if the two are related. I also noticed, when I was logging in, that it said that my stystem was still using the old kernel. Indeed, according to “uname -r” I'm still using 3.19.3-3-ARCH.
The closest thing to experience I have with this is when I forget to mount /boot before upgrading linux, so I made sure /boot was mounted and rand “sudo pacman -S linux” to reinstall, but this didn't help. Just to check I ran “ls /lib/modules” and see the directorys “4.0.1-1-ARCH” and “extramodules-4.0-ARCH” as I would expect after a succesful upgrade of the kernel.
Running “systemctl –failed, shows that in addition to systemd-modules-load.service, lm_sensors.service has also failed. I somehow expect lm_sensors depends on systemd-modules-load. I tried “systemctl restart systemd-modules-load”, but was rewarded with a message telling me that it failed. The “journalctl -xe” log has the lines
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'sg': Function not implemented
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented
Looking at the Wiki for Systemd under troubleshooting it actually has an example of trying to work through this exact issue. Following that I tried
journalctl _PID=1799
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'sg': Function not implemented
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented
which I already mentioned. At this point that bit of the Wiki stopped being useful.
Looking up on Google Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented returned this thread from two years ago. Running “lsmod |grep sg” or $lsmod |grep nfs” returns nothing, but it also returns nothing on this laptop I'm using as well, so I don't imagine that is useful. Also, “# grep nfs /lib/modules/4.0.1-1-ARCH/modules.alias” returns a “Nosuch file or directory” error.
Searching for something on 'sg' turned up https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=165361, which was also not useful.
As a sort of last resort I tried https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … the_kernel
I reboot and boot into my fallback installation, running 3.19.3-3, mount the partition with my main Arch on it, and arch-chroot into it.
I downgraded linux, and nvidia, exited chroot, and rebooted hoping to the Great Bacon that I didn't do anything too damaging. After all, my back ups are more than a week out of date.
This worked. I'm still getting those annyoing (they are only annoying right?) error messages I mentioned earlier. My system seems fine, if somewhat out of date.
Still, the question remains, “why did that happen, and how do I actually fix it?”
[edit2=solution]
There were two problems. First, my grub.cfg entry was pointing to the wrong UUID. I fixed this by regenerating it. Then I noticed the UUID in the grub menu itself (during the boot prosses) did not match what was in grub.cfg. To fix this I reinstalled grub.
Last edited by nstgc (2015-05-05 12:07:30)Well, I took snapshots, not back ups but they work well enough for this, and rsynced /boot/ to where it use to be, moved/renamed the subvolume boot, and commented out the appropriate line in fstab. I also deleted that other /boot from before. I unmount /boot, and regenerate my grub.cfg. If my machine still boots, I'll try for an upgrade.
grub.cfg now looks like
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
# It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates
# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub

It seems as if the lines you mentioned, Scimmia, have changed. I'll take that as a good sign.
[edit] System still boots. Trying for the upgrade.
[edit2] Still can't use Linux 4.0. I'm getting the same errors as before.
[edit3] Successfully downgraded.
[edit4] I looked through /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and there isn't anything in there that isn't in my laptop's. I don't know if this will help, but here is the output of "pacman -Q"

[edit5] My /etc/modules-load.d directory is empty by the way, and "sudo /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-modules-load" returns nothing. Note, this is all while running Linux 3.19, but I believe it should demonstrate that I don't have any special modules running. Or so I believe.

[SOLVED] pacman -Syu on 10/17/2012, systemd can't load kernel modules
Ok, I did a [pacman -Syu] on my laptop, and everything went well. So I decided to upgrade my PC as well, did a reboot and then couldn't ssh into it.
Had to access the machine, and found
# systemctl --failed

[email protected] loaded failed failed dhcpcd on eth0
httpd.service loaded failed failed Apache Web Server
systemd-modules-load.service loaded failed failed Load Kernel Modules
LOAD = Reflects whether the unit definition was properly loaded.
ACTIVE = The high-level unit activation state, i.e. generalization of SUB.
SUB = The low-level unit activation state, values depend on unit type.
JOB = Pending job for the unit.
3 loaded units listed. Pass --all to see loaded but inactive units, too.
To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.
so it failed to load kernel modules...
# systemctl status systemd-modules-load.service

I'm guessing it's probably something with the new image after the pgrade, but I don't know which module to load nor do I
understand why systemd isn't loading the modules when it was working stable enough to act as a headless server before. However, I've only been a week or so with systemd and might have overlooked something in the configs. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Please. I'm desperate.
Last edited by confusion-is-my-sedative (2012-10-26 21:30:01)Yep, I got that far, and tried the same advice from a different user with a 'tee' command which did the same thing, but unfortunately the forcedeth module can't be loaded because its in a different directory than the 'uname -r' specification allows modprobe to search for. I posted my attempts here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1181940

Discover which kernel modules correspond to your specific hardware
Here is a bash script to probe your hardware, then come up with a list of kernel modules you may wish to compile into a custom kernel tailored for specific machine!
#/bin/bash
# Script by graysky based on some code found in http://www.kroah.com/lkn/ chapter 7
# Purpose: probe system for devices controlled by modules and list them via name
# Email: graysky <echo Z3JheXNreUBhcmNobGludXgudXMK | base64 -d>
##### edit this to point to the path containing your kernel source
kernelsource="/path/to/kernel/source"
clear && echo "Probing... wait a sec"
[ -f /tmp/list ] && rm -f /tmp/list
for i in `find /sys/ -name modalias -exec cat {} \;`; do
/sbin/modprobe --config /dev/null --show-depends $i 2>/dev/null >> /tmp/list ;
done
# clean up list
rev /tmp/list | cut -f 1 -d '/' | rev | sort -u | sed -e ':a;N;$!ba;s/\n//g' -e 's/.ko.gz//g' > /tmp/list2
[ -f /tmp/list3 ] && rm -f /tmp/list3

ExFAT kernel module not in community but FUSE exFAT is
Just wondering if a FUSE driver in community means a kernel module also belongs there. Seems like the rationale for kernel module support by official repos is stronger unless I am missing something.
AUR exFAT kernel modules
Official community exFAT for FUSEThanks Scimmia. Any Samsung controversy now seems irrelevant? Their code is GPL. Thanks for the history.
The patent issue is orthogonal. The old FAT patent expires in 2013 and was already beaten down. I don't know about exFAT but see TechRights.
Given Microsoft's cross-patent agreements with Apple, Samsung, and the whole tech universe, it's likely wrong to say you need a Microsoft device. You need a device from any vendor with a license. Like motherboard manufacturers....cell phone manufacturers....etc. etc. etc. etc.
Be that as it may or not, I think you're right that any patent implications would affect the FUSE suite as much as the kernel one? Therefore my original argument stands, I would say. Arch should give official support to the kernel module (since it already does the FUSE version which is inferior quality by definition).
Thanks -
Fuse kernel module located in wrong [version]
Hello:
I recently installed extra/fuse 2.7.4-3 as part of a project to get my Acer Aspire One to mount my cellphone using obexfs. However, rather than installing the module under
/lib/modules/2.6.30-one-dev/
it was placed under
/lib/modules/2.6.30-ARCH/kernel/fs/fuse/fuse.ko
and consequently when I try to load it via rc.conf, I get (from dmesg)
[ 0.844550] fuse init (API version 7.11)
[ 316.870681] fuse: version magic '2.6.30-ARCH SMP preempt mod_unload 686 ' should be '2.6.30-one-dev SMP preempt mod_unload CORE2 '
[ 825.370581] fuse: version magic '2.6.30-ARCH SMP preempt mod_unload 686 ' should be '2.6.30-one-dev SMP preempt mod_unload CORE2 '
[ 1550.966153] fuse: version magic '2.6.30-ARCH SMP preempt mod_unload 686 ' should be '2.6.30-one-dev SMP preempt mod_unload CORE2 '
or via modprobe I get:
FATAL: Could not open '/lib/modules/2.6.30-one-dev/kernel/fs/fuse/fuse.ko': No such file or directory
I tried reinstalling - even using yaourt -b (from source), but that didn't seem to help. I looked at the PKGBUILD but didn't know what, if anything, I needed to alter.
I also tried copying the /fuse directory over to the -dev kernel, but I get:
FATAL: Error inserting fuse (/lib/modules/2.6.30-one-dev/kernel/fs/fuse/fuse.ko): Invalid module format
Finally, I ran depmod but that didn't seem to help either.
I was not able to find this problem listed elsewhere. By the way, I can manipulate files) on my phone using my ACER (as root), but am bothered by the fuse errors.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

[cisco VPN] Can't build kernel module with 2.6.9-ARCH
I need to setup a vpn tunnel to my university in order to gain acces to their resources and be able to surf when I am on the campus. With 2.6.8.1 I used the Cisco VPN client 4.0.5 k9. After my upgrade to 2.6.9 I had to rebuild the module, but now it fails to build. Anyone knows how to solve this? Or does anyone know another vpn client that is compatible with Cisco. This piece of software is essential to me. Please help. Here is the output:

Do you have any fglrx specific configuration? Do you have anything in your /etc/modprobe.d ?
Could it be that fglrx is compiled for previous versions of kernel and this is a problem?
I don't have any specific fglrx configuration and in /etc/modprobe.d/ I have a file called modprobe.conf that contains
blacklist radeon
fglrx
I dont think fglrx was compiled for previous versions of the kernel because I used the kernel that the latest release contained. My kernel version is 3.16.3-1.

Do you have the signed version of the following kernel module:
adfs.sys : Adobe Drive File System Driver
Event ID: 3001
Source: CodeIntegrity
Microsoft VistaJeff: The Code Intergrity found in the Event Process of my Vista Notebook (i.e., Sony Vaio, Model No. VGN G2AANS) reports of an unsigned Adobe kernal module (i.e., adfs.sys, Adobe Drive File System Driver). Read copy of event log: Event 3001, Code Integrity, (Code Integrity determined an unsigned kernel module \Device\Harddisk Volume2\Windows \System32\drivers\adfs.sys is loaded into the system. Check with the publisher to see ifa signed version of the kernel moduleis available) Since you are the publisher, do you have a signed copy of the module? Harold

Performing disk reads from within a kernel module

OrenIt's kinda non-trivial... physio() might be not good enough as if your disk is SCSI it won't perform sync I/O for you - you'd better use the aphysio(), or get the dev_ops of the disk and call it's strategy directly...
Do not forget to set completion (iodone) routine pointer in your buf structure - it'll be called upon I/O completion in asyncronous case. You might then wait on some CV in your I/O routine right after you've dispatched the strategy (either directly, or via aphysio), and in iodone() routine just signal the CV.
Hope this helps,

[Request] cryogenic kernel module to reduce power consumption
Hi there,
I found a very interesting kernel module to reduce power consumption. It is called cryogenic:
Cryogenic is a Linux kernel module that allows to reduce energy consumption by means of enabling cooperative clustering of I/O operations among the various applications that make use of the same hardware device. In order to achieve this target, Cryogenic provides an API that enables applications to schedule I/O operations on SCSI and network devices at times where the impact the operations have on energy consumption is small.
https://gnunet.org/cryogenic
Is someone interested in packaging this for the AUR?
Thanks! What part of that document led you to think it would automagically reduce power consumption without application support?
I saw that document (and it is the same as your first post... 106 pages..meh), all points me to (still) think that applications have to explicitely support cryogenic to take advantage from it, is pretty clear:
Page 28
In this section we present the way developers should use Cryoge nic’s API in order to
benefit from its capabilities . We illustrate with examples the code that must be added to modify the behaviour of any application and give a clearer idea of the execution flow .
Did you read that document, yes?

[Kernel module development ]Makefile issue with .cpp
Hi all,
I'm currently in the process of rewriting an external kernel module, that shares a big part of its code with the Windows version of the driver. The common files are C-code, but for some Windows-related obscure reason their extension is .cpp. In the previous version of the driver, we had to run a small script on the files to convert the .cpp to .c files for the linux driver. Not very elegant. So I'd like to be able to work directly on the .cpp files, but compile them as "pure C" files. This would allow us to directly work on the files fetched from the VCS, and it's a lot nicer!
Unfortunately, when compiling a kernel module, it's ultimately the kernel's Makefile that's called to actually do the compilation, and no rule is defined in it to handle .cpp files, even when they contain pure-C code. So my source files are never found, and I get a nice "no rule to make target".
Would any of you know a way to do this? I know of the "-x c" gcc option, but as I don't really master Makefiles, I don't know if I can pass it to the kernel Makefile, and no more how... I looked all over the internet (took me a long time to read all of it...) and found nothing so far.
Thanks a lotIt's a bash check ([), it tells the script to add a conditional makedepends (if the kernel has that name, add that package as a dependency to build). It's optional, so it doesn't do any harm.
Thanks for looking though .
