Cabling from MacBook 2 Vizio HDTV

Is there a cable that can connect my MacBook to HDTV (have two, Vizio/Samsung) in order to watch movies currently residing on laptop?

Depends on what input plug you'll be using on your TV. VGA, DVI or HDMI. You'll need a Mini DisplayPort adapter and a cable from that to your TV. Here's the various types of Mini DisplayPort adapters on Amazon.com  http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13#/ref=nb_sb_ss_sc_2_16?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=mini+ displayport&sprefix=mini+displayport&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amini+displayport
If you connect the MacBook using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo sound system if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The MiniDisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.
With the model 6,1 there is an adapter that can combine video and audio to HDMI. http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802 &p_id=5969&seq=1&format=2

I updated tonight and I now also have no audio in any way - I don't even get the remote clicks. Looking through these forums, it looks like this is a problem every time Apple TV updates? Anyway, I tried to follow a suggestion in another thread to connect to my computer and restore the previous firmware version but iTunes doesn't recognize the device (device driver installed fine but it doesn't show up in iTunes or as a USB device in My Computer (I have a PC)). So, maybe I'm doing something wrong but I'm a little annoyed that I now apparently own a $100 puck. Has anyone found a solution since the last time or any really simple instructions for rolling back an update? I won't be able to get to an Apple store until Tuesday and my blood pressure goes up now every time I look at the little box sitting there totally useless....

    Welcome to the discussion area!
Just a hunch. The Sony and iBook may not be able to handle WPA2 Personal Security, which is the default Security setting of the Time Capsule.
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Change the setting for Wireless Security to WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Update to save settings
    Any luck?

The model 7,1 is actually the Mid 2010 MacBook and is the only MacBook with a Mini DisplayPort that sends audio along with the video, Here's some Mini DisplayPort to HDMI with audio adapters from Amazon.

  • Adapter/cable for display output from Macbook to Samsung 42" HDTV

I am interested in purchasing an adapter/cable that will allow me to connect my Macbook to my HDTV so that I may watch videos I play on my computer (e.g., from hulu.com, etc) on my TV. What do I need to purchase in order to do this? Does the audio output as well?
Please, if you're answering this, use Lehman's terms so that I can understand what's being said thanks in advance!

    Hey locasciok1;
First you need a Mini DVI port to HDMI adapter. Look for this on eBay or on something online. WAAAAY too expensive from Future Shop or something. In fact, never get cables from electronics stores, they are always around 5000% marked up. What you will spend $60 to $250 for in store will cost $4 online.
Then, if you have HDMI input on the back of your TV (most new TVs have it, looks like this: http://macpeanut.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/hdmi.jpg) you can run a cable
So get the proper adapter to go from your Macbook to HDMI cable, then the HMDI cable to your TV.
So just post if you do not have an HDMI port on your TV, but post with the specifics of what ports you do have on your TV, whether they are the 3 plug Yellow, Red, White, or the 5 plug, Blue, Green, Yellow Red, White or whatever.
Hope this helps, best of luck!

  • Cant hear audio using an hdmi cable from my MacBook Pro to an HDTV

i'm trying to watch video and streaming video from my McBook Pro on an HDTV via an HDMI cable.  i can see the video but there is no sound.  help?

What year was your Mac made, IE what Model year is it and what model is it?
With newer Macs all you need is a good Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter, I know the Griffin model work as I have one, and a HDMI cable.
If a Retina model that has a HDMI out port then you don't need any adapters of any kind. Just a cable from HDMI to HDMI ports on Mac and TV.
Once you have a good adapter, if you need one, and the cable is connected to the TV go into System Preferences and the Sound Applet and there should be an option in the Output section for HDMI. Enable that and the sound will be sent over the HDMI cable to the TV.
If you have an older Mac computer then you may need to use a separate cable from the Mac headphone out port to a Line In port on the TV

  • Why does my Vizio hdtv say no signal when I connect my minidisplay port to hdmi cord between my macbook pro and tv?

My Vizio hdtv says "No Signal" when I use my mini displayport to hdmi cord. It worked flawlessly for a month but randomly decided to no longer work.
I am using a macbook pro from early 2011 running os x Lion 10.7.5 and a thunderbolt to hdmi cord. The cord has worked without a hitch the numerous times I've used it until recently. Now plugging it in will cause the macbook to flash blue quicker than normal and immediately go back to the normal screen. I know the macbook recognizes the TV because changing the input on the TV to the hdmi connected to the computer will cause the macbook to flash blue again, with the same result. The TV remains unresponsive. I have tried all combinations of turning on and off the TV and macbook with the cord plugged in and unpugged from either and both systems and in both hdmi inputs on the TV. I've changed the display resolution to every possible option with no result. The TV is not recognized as a display on either the Display section of System Preferences or the Sound section.
It confounds me that the cord should work flawlessly until now, a month after buying it, for no apparent reason. I've been gentle with the cord, so the problem being a result of damage is unlikely. I had not updated my computer in any way between the successful and unsuccessful uses of the cord, but I have since updated my computer and the problem remains.
I have searched for this problem on the Internet and have seen others with similar problems, but I have not found a solution that resolves my problem. I hope to avoid having to make any additional purchases.
And a thousand and one thanks to any and all who help.

Do you have gfxCardStatus installed?  Is your monitor set to "Integrated" or "Discrete".  You want it set to Discrete to drive the external HDMI display.
Try resetting the PRAM and SMC

Are you sure you have a good miniDisplayPort to HDMI cable?
Do you have another HDMI display you can test against (your neighbor's HDMI capable TV).
Do you have friend that can test the cable using their Mac and maybe their TV or a monitor that has HDMI input.

  • I have a late 2011 model MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion.  I love the AirPlay mirroring feature with Apple TV...BUT, how do I mirror with TVs that don't have Apple TV?  I used to run a cable from my mini display port to the HDMI input of a TV.

I have a late 2011 model MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion.  I love the AirPlay mirroring feature with Apple TV...BUT, how do I mirror with TVs that don't have Apple TV?  I used to run a cable from my mini display port to the HDMI input of a TV.  This feature seems to be lost in the Mountain Lion upgrade.  Did Apple feel that once Mountain Lion came out that EVERYONE would have Apple TV?  There are no settings in System Preferences/Display like there used to be...only for AirPlay Mirroring.

Running a cable to the HDMI port is still supported. (and still works on mine).
If the Arrangement tab in System Preferences > Displays isn't present then it doesn't recognize the physical connection.  Double check all cables.  If that doesn't work try a PRAM reset:

  • Trying to connect a Belkin brand audio cable from my MacBook Pro to a Sony flatscreen TV. Cannot get any sound from the laptop out of the TV. What am I doing wrong?

I'm trying to connect a Belkin brand stereo audio cable from my MacBook Pro to a Sony flatscreen TV (Apple "genius" handed me the cable to purchase.)  I have tried all the ports in the back of the Sony, and tried the volume on both the cable and TV remotes. I cannot get sound out of the Sony from my MacBook Pro laptop. What am I doing wrong???

Downloaded your operating manual.  It appears that you need to connect the HDMI to HDMI 1 and the audio to the input socket just to the right of the VGA socket (i.e., between the VGA and the RF input connection).  The picture on page13 seems to be the clearest I could find:
Although it's not exactly clear I think they are talking about a standard 3.5 mm (1/8") stereo jack for the audio inpu as opposed to the more common RCA jacks used in the row just above that VGA input socket.
I haven't checked the manual as yet whether you need to set anything special with the controls other than input select.
Note, if that truly is a 3.5 mm stereo jack cables are very common.  In your case it would just be a cable with a 3.5 mm jack on each end.
    Update:
You will have to experiment with this but I think you will need to try pusing the input button to select either HDMI1 or PC (or Component?).  The manual is not clear on this (page 31).  Sometimes it just comes down to pushing buttons.

Yeah, just wondering if any audio cable will work to hook from Macbook Pro (10..5.8) to an amp?  Not skilled in this area at all!  thanks!

But the newest Mac notebooks do not have a firewire port.
So he may need a TB to FW adapter, $29, a FW 400 or 800 cable, $??, and then a FW 400 to 800 cable/port adapter (If the old Mac only has a FW 400 port), $??.
It is unknown if the old Mac has a FW 400 or 800 port.

  • Cable to migrate from Macbook (late 2007) to Mac Mini 2012?

What cable should I use to migrate files from Macbook (late 2007) to Mac Mini 2012. The ethernet migration took 30 hours. The Macbook messaged success but the Mini did not show that any files were transfered.

Where did you look for the migrated files? Look in the /Users/ folder and see if there isn't a new user account. If so, then log into that account where you should find what you migrated.
The only way to do a migration any faster and more reliably is if both computers have Firewire ports. If they do then you can use Target Disk Mode to migrate.
