Call a sequence of VIs (not .exe)) in VB. only LV runtime engine Installed

I am try to reuse my labview vis in VB enviroment. I would like to call a sequecne of vi from VB just like in LV with Call By Reference. This is a production enviroment, only Labview runtime engine installed in the computer. I realize that I can call labview exe file from VB, but then I have to compile every vis (more than hundreds) and have to reference every vis servers in VB.

Actually, the runtime engine can run any VI--not just ones built into an application. The problem will be getting data in and out of the functions.
If you have much of the code already written in LV why are you messing around with VB? Wouldn't the easiest solution be to write the entire application in LV? Just wondering.

  • Run labview exe in other way than runtime engine?

    Hi guys
This might be stupid question, but can I run labview's *.exe in other way than in the runtime engine? In these days in have done *exe and installer with runtime engine and give it to the end-user. It does not matter how tiny ur code is, user have to install 40 conponents and then restart computer... How annoying. Is there eny other way? Can i use other programming languages some how?
    -AA-

If the runtime is only one out of 40 components, it should not make a big difference for you.
I always tell my users to download and install the runtime engine directly from NI. This needs to be done only once per PC and per runtime version, at which point you can distribute a small installer.
There is also an idea to simplify all this. Please support it.
(It is not reasonable to be able to build an executable with embedded runtime, that would make a LabVIEW 2009 executable 100+MB in size. (We had that back in LabVIEW 4.0, where each 20kb VI turned into a 3+MB executable, which was significant in the days of 1GB drives.)

  • An EXE under 8.5.1 runtime engine can't find VISA drivers

Apologies in advance for newbie question.
I built a simple app (EXE) that uses PC serial port, using VISA drivers.
Works OK on one Dell PC, not OK on another.  Not exactly sure what to try.
The failure occurs when code hits the "Visa configure serial port" block.
See attached bitmaps for error message and offending block.
Do the Visa drivers need to be installed by me on the PC ?

    Hello Remerlin,
Did you just create an exe, or did you create a full installer.  If you are going to deploy an application that uses functionality such as VISA, or LabView Runtime, you need to create an installer and include the additional installers such as VISA.  The following is a link to a tutorial on how to do this.
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/5406
When creating the installer, go to additional installers under categories (in installer properties) and make shure VISA, and LabView Runtime are checked, as well as any other functionality you will be using.

  • LELA - Will not run on a different PC. (Already Installed Fine)

I have a odd problem. My laptop (which I set up the router on) runs LELA no problem but my mother's pc which is on the network, just gives an error and then says it needs to close.
    The error it gives is in the picture below;
    When I click the "What data does this error report contain?" link I receive the following information;
    AppName: linksys easylink advisor.exe      AppVer: 3.0.8122.29     AppStamp:481a0e08
    ModName: kernel32.dll      ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180      ModStamp:411096b4
    fDebug: 0       Offset: 0001eb33
Does anyone know what could cause this to happen?
I had figured it was a software issue, having to do with some kind of missing runtime file or .NET framework, so I did some research and installed the C++ runtime and .NET framework 2.0, but it still yields the same issue.
This computer was newly reinstalled with Windows XP Home Edition, as the last router would not allow it on the network, and tried everything but then had to get a new router (Linksys WRT310N-CA).
As of this moment the PC has been upgraded to XP Service Pack 2, and has .NET Framework 2.0, Visual C++ 2008 Runtime Files (v9.0), Adobe Flash Player and Microsoft Silverlight. (I have noted only the most common files most software needs to run that have been installed, in actuality there is much more installed but I am not going to waste time listing it all.)
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You in advance for taking the time to read this and possibly trying to solve this problem.
NOTE: What other files are needed to run LELA that I have not already listed?

It looks like you do have the LabVIEW runtime engine installed.  It might be that the VISA drivers you have are not compatible versions.  In NIMAX, look under software to see what versions of VISA software you have installed on both systems.
It does not matter what version of NI MAX you have installed, since your application does not use NI MAX.  NI MAX only helps you look at (or simulate) the hardware and software you have on your system.
One thing you could do is include drivers and the runtime engine while creating your installer.  That way, you should be able to do a complete install on a clean system.

  • Runtime engine 8.0.1 does not install because higher version is installed

    Hello,
I am trying to install Runtime Engine 8.0.1.
This is the message I get when installing Runtime Engine 8.0.1:
"A higher version of this product is already installed."
Yet I do not have another Runtime Engine version installed. According to the NI Add/Remove program, I have the following installed:
    NI LabWindows/CVI 8.1 Run-Time Engine
NI Measurement  & Automation Explorer 4.2.1
    NI-488.2.2.5
    NI-485x Software 1.0.1
    NI-VISA Runtime 4.0
    At some point,  I un-installed:
    NI LabWindows/CVI 8.1 Run-Time Engine
    NI-488.2.2.5
but I ended up with the same results:
"A higher version of this product is already installed."
I checked my folders and deleted any trace of Runtime Engine folders. I therefore deleted:
    C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\LabVIEW Run-Time\
but I am still unable to install Runtime Engine 8.0.1.
    Any idea?
    Thanks,
    Francois

    Hi Francois,
If you have a newer version of the runtime engine installed, then it should be listed in MAX. However, you've already deleted that directory, so it may not be there anymore. The only way now to uninstall those versions of the runtime engine is to use a utility we have that I cannot post on the forum. If you can create a service request via email or phone then we would be able to help you get the newer versions fully uninstalled. You can create a service request at www.ni.com/ask.
If you do not have a support contract and cannot create a service request, then let me know and I will create one for you so you can call in.

  • NI VISA Runtime engine

When "Building" a LabVIEW program containing NI-VISA sub VI's (e.g. to communicate with USB), I have had problems getting the "Built code" to find my NI VISA devices, even though the NI VISA USB  Drivers are correctly installed on the "target machine".
(The "built" code WILL run if the target machine has a LabVIEW installation on it, including NI VISA)
So - will the NI VISA runtime engine be automatically included in the "Build" (Because of the NI VISA sub VI's), or do I have to specify this myself - And how?
    Thanks. Peter.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You specify installing the NI VISA Runtime Engine when you build and installer for your built executable. Look on the Additional Installers tab of the Installer Properties Dialog Box.  The NI VISA Runtime Engine should be selected automatically but if it's not you can uncheck the Automatically select recomended installers checkbox and select any other installers you want to include in your install.
If you're not using an installer then no runtime engines are installed and you'll have to do that manually on each machine you copy the executable to.
This all assumes LabVIEW 2013.  The selection process is slightly different in earlier versions but all the options are still available.

  • How to call a sequence in a new thread from C++ dll

Here is what I am trying to do:
I implemented a dll that monitors network traffic, and it also supports message handlers that can be triggered when a specific message has been received. Essentially the receipt of a message is like an event causing additional code to be executed. What I need to do is have the message handler in the dll call/execute a sequence (either is the same sequence file that originally called the dll, or in a different sequence file). Also I want the sequence to be executed within the same execution object for the purpose of result collection and report generation. I am expecting the dll to have to launch a new thread to call a sequence because of the asynchronous nature of the message received event.
There are easier ways to achieve the same result, but one of my goals is to make it easy for a test developer to configure a message handler, by having only one step in their sequence to configure the message handler. I want the rest to be transparent to the user.
I am unsure about how to implement this feature, so I am asking for any examples, ideas, comments before I start trying things out.

Assuming that I understand your question correctly, it would seem to be the best way to do this would be to pass the Execution object to the DLL (either through a direct pass of the Execution object or passing the sequence context, from which you can get the Execution).  Then simply call Execution.NewThread, specifying the SequenceFile object (accessible from Engine.GetSequenceFileEx) and then passing the Thread object out as an output.  Your sequence file in which your DLL is called could then simply have a Wait step which is configured to wait on that Thread object.  What happens in this case is that the results are collected for that thread (which is being executed asynchronously) and returned as the results for the Wait step.
Although you are probably not using LabVIEW, I have attached an example of this in LabVIEW that might be helpful just for seeing the flow.

The path for rs.exe includes spaces, you should set it in hyphen, as you already did for file "RunOrdReports.rss" in variable "sArgs2

  • Is it possible to Call a Sequence as a Substep type of EditStep "Test Stand "

I wish to create a custom step type. I would like to create a sequence and call it as an EditStep. Is this possible?

No. It is not possible to directly call a sequence for any of the substeps (Edit, Pre or Post). The sequence adapter is not available for calling substeps, and there is not current plans to add this ability.
You could call code (VI, DLL, ActiveX server) using one of the adapters available for the substeps, and then within that code you could call a sequence using the NewExecution method. I would only do this if it was really necessary.

What are p and d in
    "{call Allsch("+p+","+d+")}"
Something tells me you might need some quotes in this statement since they are varchar2. Maybe
    "{call Allsch('"+p+"','"+d+"')}"
If this doesn't work try to cut off parts of the procedure until it works.

    So now i am here.

The most common problem with exe vs debug applications is file paths.  If you are doing file io and using paths relative to a vi then you will have some trouble.  If you are using the same PC then there shouldnt be a problem with visa not being installed.  Do you get any error messages to clue you in on the source of the error?  Do you have any error handling (passing error clusters and handleing them) in the application?

  • Sequence File has not been released

    Hi,
After the execution is complete, I get (TestStand 3.5) a debug warning stating that a Sequence file has not been released!
The indicated file is my main sequence.
    What does it mean?
Where and how am I suppose to release it?
Any clue as to where to start fixing this problem?
    Thanks
    Rafi

    Hey Rafi
This error is occurring because somewhere there is a reference to an object that is not being closed.  The first step would be to open just your operator interface(OI) and close it to see if the error occurs.  If it does, then there is an object in your OI that isn't being closed.  The next step would be to open an example sequence file in your OI and see if the error occurs.  If it does, most likely the problem is still within your OI.  If the example sequence file runs fine, then the problem is in your sequence file itself.  Usually this error occurs in code modules that are being called and not in code that is native to the TestStand API.  The native API tries to close everything for you to avoid this problem.
