Calling a variable that's in a different method

I have one class file with 1 main method and 2 other methods (lets call them A and B).
I have two variables inside method A, called max and min.
I need to use these variables, max and min, in method B, but the compiler says it can't resolve the symbol for the two variables. Right now both my A and B methods are "public static void A(String[] args)". Is there an easy explanation as to how I can get method B to recognize the variables from method A? Thanks - Cpx

I tried the private int max, min; but the compiler
says a "non-static variable min cannot be referenced
from a static context."Because main() is static and you cannot use non-static variables or call non-static methods from a static method (do you know what "static" means?).
So how do you pass the variables between methods as
arguments?Make the variables static.

In programming, wishing that something will "just work" without understanding the basics of why and how it works does, pretty much 100% of the time, not end well.
    You need to take a number of steps back from this code, get grounded in some fundamentals and then make another attempt. I would highly recommend putting the Swing (or any other GUI) code aside for some time now. Inter-object communication is a fundamental part of OO and thus a fundamental part of Java and this code clearly shows that you don't understand it yet at all.
    Start here [_Learning The Java Language_|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/index.html]
    If you have questions as you go through the tutorial do come back and ask them and someone here will be glad to help you. But in order to help you with code you have to be at a point where you understand things like variable scope, the difference between a class and an Object and how, why and what methods can be used to exchange information between two instances.

  • Use variables that are defined later on

    Hi Guys!
    I'm having some troubles trying to figure out how to use or call a variable that I define later on a website, for example
    <cfoutput>#meta#</cfoutput>
    <cfset meta=1>
    The real case is that meta is being used by other functions and since it's already there I want to take advantage of it and recycle, so how can I call or use a variable that where I want to use It, it hasn't been declare yet?

    This is a very very fundamental question about how programming & web apps are concerned, so best you read some docs:

  • Setting a variable that I can call it's value from any symbol.

    Hey everyone!
    I'm working on an edge animate game and I'm learning as I go you can say
    The way I have it set up is I have a container that holds different symbols depending on which button you click on. They symbols open you up to a deeper part of the game.
    However I want to be able to set a variable on the stage that I can later manipulate when the different symbols are open.
    What I have so far is my limited understaning of jquery, in the stage I start off by setting a variable
    var variable1 =     5,
        variable2 =     10;
    Then in my symbol I want to be able to do something like this
    if(variable1 > variable2) {
    Then do something
    else {
    Then do something else
    variable1 = 10
    variable2 = 5
    However the problem I am having is that when I set the variable value in the stage the entire variable name and value is not rememembered in the symbols.
    So is there any code I could write in the symbols that can call the variables defined in the stage into the symbols.
    Thank you so much for any help. It is greatly appreciated .

    Hi, I've literally just solved this problem for myself! I've been unable to get variables remembered within symbols too. This will be familiar if you've accessed the Stage from within a symbol already, like so (this kind-of takes a step back and takes you to the main stage from within the symbol):
    sym.getComposition().getStage().$("anElement").hide();
    The way I've updated the score (displayed on the stage) from within a symbol it is to GET the variable from the stage:
    var score = sym.getComposition().getStage().getVariable("score");
    score += 100;
    sym.getComposition().getStage().$("valueDisplay").html(score);
    sym.getComposition().getStage().setVariable("score", score);
    So for you I'd recommend:
    var variable1 = sym.getComposition().getStage().getVariable("variable1");
    var variable2 = sym.getComposition().getStage().getVariable("variable");
    if(variable1 > variable2) { this }
    else { that }
    If you wanted to update the variables and store them on the stage, then you'd do that similarly:
    variable1++;
    sym.getComposition().getStage().setVariable("variable1", variable1")
    Hope this helps, I may not be 100% and it may be explained better as I'm learning as I go myself!

  • Report Generation Toolkit producing error -2147417842, "The application called an interface that was marshalled for a different thread."

    Hi everybody,
    I've got an application that logs data to an Excel spreadsheet using the Report Generation Toolkit.  My VI's have worked fine in the past using Excel XP, but since I've upgraded to Excel 2007, I am getting COM errors like this one:
    "Error -2147417842 occurred at The application called an interface that was marshalled for a different thread. in Excel_Insert_Text.vi"  That is the exact wording, even with the weird punctuation and capitalization.
    The first occurrence of the error is not determinate.  Sometimes, up to 10 logging sessions, involving a new .xls file, can occur before this error pops up.  Once this error occurs, I must quit LabVIEW to resolve it.  If I try to do anything with Excel, I always get this error, although sometimes it comes out of different source VIs.  Excel_Open.vi is another.
    These logging VIs have worked just fine until upgrading to Excel 2007.  I checked, and I was using a really old version of the Report Generation Toolkit, v1.0.1.  I read the documentation and had a big sigh of relief when I realized I needed to upgraded to v1.1.2 to get Excel 2007 support.  However, even after upgrading, I'm still getting the same errors.  I'm using LabVIEW 8.0.1, and I'm also building these VIs into an application.   The error occurs both in the LabVIEW IDE and in the built application.  Does anybody out there have any idea what I can do to fix this?  I googled a little, and discovered this is a COM error, but I can't find any references to the Report Generation Toolkit specifically.
    Thanks,
    Phil
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Christian,
    I do not see that exact option listed, do you mean "user interface"?  I recognize the "Run in UI Thread" option, it's on the Call Library Function Node.
    I checked, and my top-level VI has "same as caller" set, and I believe all my VIs are set to "same as caller".  Are you suggesting I change my top-level VI preferred execution environment to "user interface", or just the logging sub-VIs that use the Report Generation Toolkit?
    Thanks,
    Phil

  • UCCX8 Is There a Sesion Variable that contains the Call Control Group ID

    Hello,
         Is there a session variable that contains the Call Control Group ID of the trigger that called the script?
    -Lauren

    Hi Lauren,
    sorry, after two hours of analysing call hierarchies and running debugs, I gave up. I can't see any way of getting that value programmatically, in other words, I don't see any public field or method that would yield the desired value.
    However, if you want to use this only for debugging purposes, then getting the contact using the Get Trigger Info step, assigning it to a variable named contact (of type Contact) then calling the following method on it:
    contact.getTask().getTrigger() (which automatically calls the toString() method) would return a String similar to this - and it contains the ID of the Call Control Group apparently:
    "ContactApplicationTrigger[time=1356102368509,locale=en_US,cfg=JTAPITriggerConfig[schema=ApplicationTriggerConfig,time=2011-09-14 18:28:25.0,recordId=414,desc=Cisco JTAPI Trigger,name=82152,type=Cisco JTAPI Trigger,appName=TRAPPA,enabled=true,sessions=5000,idleTimeout=5000,locale=en_US,parms={},taskGroups=[],controlClass=class com.cisco.call.CallControlChannel,controlGroupId=1,contactGroups=[GroupInfo[class=com.cisco.dialog.DialogChannel,id=0]],dn=82152,redirectCSS=redirecting.party,cmDeviceName=TRAPPA_82152,cmDeviceInvalid=false,cmDescription=TransRouting IVRA,cmDevicePoolUUID={978D6B59-356E-FC92-81A9-3AAE9F843120},cmDevicePoolName=DP_Main_C,cmCallingSearchSpaceUUID={87083019-FEBF-9B48-742B-7658396D1D5C},cmCallingSearchSpaceName=CSS_mobily_normal_HelpDesk_IS,cmLocationUUID={29C5C1C4-8871-4D1E-8394-0B9181E8C54D},cmLocationName=Hub_None,cmPartitionUUID={10003B1B-F235-16A7-927D-01EB3DCCB57C},cmPartitionName=P_operatori,cmVoiceMailProfileUUID=,cmVoiceMailProfileName=None,cmCallPickUpGroupUUID=,cmCallPickUpGroupName=,cmDisplay=,cmExternalPhNumMask=,cmFwdBusyVM=false,cmFwdBusyDest=,cmFwdBusyCSSUUID=,cmFwdBusyCSSName=None,cmAlertingNameAscii=,cmPresenceGroupUUID=ad243d17-98b4-4118-8feb-5ff2e1b781ac,cmPresenceGroupName=Standard Presence group],contact=JTAPICallContact[id=16548,implId=3206772/2,state=STATE_ANSWERED_IDX,inbound=true,App name=TRAPPA,task=38000443987,session=17000062888,seq num=0,cn=82152,dn=82152,cgn=0725099603,ani=0725099603,dnis=null,clid=null,atype=REDIRECT,lrd=78866,ocn=78866,route=RP[num=82152],OrigProtocolCallRef=000000000030EE740228F81300000000,DestProtocolCallRef=null,TP=81122]]"
    Looks like the cfg field cannot be accessed, but the automatic toString() method is kind enough to dump all this information.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi Everyone,  I am using iPhone5, my question in how to display name and contact number both stored for incoming and outgoing calls? If I have saved five different numbers with a same name, how do I recognise that from which number caller is calling?

    I have friends all over Europe, does it matter what number they use to call me? Nope! All incoming calls are free for me.
    The only time you ever have to worry about which number is if you get charged for incoming domestic/international calls.
    You can tag their number (work/home/iphone) and that may show on the CallerID accordingly.
    It should show, John Doe
    underneath,    work/home/mobile

  • SOLVED: How can I use or call a function that returns %ROWTYPE?

    Hi
    edit: you can probably skip all this guff and go straight to the bottom...In the end this is probably just a question of how to use a function that returns a %rowtype.  Thanks.
    Currently reading Feuerstein's tome, 5th ed. I've downloaded and run the file genaa.sp, which is a code generator. Specifically, you feed it a table name and it generates code (package header and package body) that will create a cache of the specified table's contents.
    So, I ran:
    HR@XE> @"C:\Documents and Settings\Jason\My Documents\Work\SQL\OPP5.WEB.CODE\OPP5.WEB.CODE\genaa.sp"
    749  /
    Procedure created.
    HR@XE> exec genaa('EMPLOYEES');which generated a nice bunch of code, viz:
    create or replace package EMPLOYEES_cache is
        function onerow ( EMPLOYEE_ID_in IN HR.EMPLOYEES.EMPLOYEE_ID%TYPE) return HR.EMPLOYEES%ROWTYPE;
        function onerow_by_EMP_EMAIL_UK (EMAIL_in IN HR.EMPLOYEES.EMAIL%TYPE) return HR.EMPLOYEES%ROWTYPE;
        procedure test;
    end EMPLOYEES_cache;
    create or replace package body EMPLOYEES_cache is
        TYPE EMPLOYEES_aat IS TABLE OF HR.EMPLOYEES%ROWTYPE INDEX BY PLS_INTEGER;
        EMP_EMP_ID_PK_aa EMPLOYEES_aat;
        TYPE EMP_EMAIL_UK_aat IS TABLE OF HR.EMPLOYEES.EMPLOYEE_ID%TYPE INDEX BY HR.EMPLOYEES.EMAIL%TYPE;
        EMP_EMAIL_UK_aa EMP_EMAIL_UK_aat;
        function onerow ( EMPLOYEE_ID_in IN HR.EMPLOYEES.EMPLOYEE_ID%TYPE)
            return HR.EMPLOYEES%ROWTYPE is
            begin
                return EMP_EMP_ID_PK_aa (EMPLOYEE_ID_in);
            end;
        function onerow_by_EMP_EMAIL_UK (EMAIL_in IN HR.EMPLOYEES.EMAIL%TYPE)
            return HR.EMPLOYEES%ROWTYPE is
            begin
                return EMP_EMP_ID_PK_aa (EMP_EMAIL_UK_aa (EMAIL_in));
            end;
        procedure load_arrays is
            begin
                FOR rec IN (SELECT * FROM HR.EMPLOYEES)
                LOOP
                    EMP_EMP_ID_PK_aa(rec.EMPLOYEE_ID) := rec;
                    EMP_EMAIL_UK_aa(rec.EMAIL) := rec.EMPLOYEE_ID;

                    pky_rec := onerow (rec.EMPLOYEE_ID);
                    EMP_EMAIL_UK_aa_rec := onerow_by_EMP_EMAIL_UK (rec.EMAIL);
                    if rec.EMPLOYEE_ID = EMP_EMAIL_UK_aa_rec.EMPLOYEE_ID then
                        dbms_output.put_line ('EMP_EMAIL_UK  lookup OK');
                    else
                        dbms_output.put_line ('EMP_EMAIL_UK  lookup NOT OK');
                    end if;
                end loop;
            end test;
        BEGIN
            load_arrays;
        end EMPLOYEES_cache;
    /which I have run successfully:
    HR@XE> @"C:\Documents and Settings\Jason\My Documents\Work\SQL\EMPLOYEES_CACHE.sql"
    Package created.
    Package body created.I am now trying to use the functionality within the package.
    I have figured out that the section
        BEGIN
            load_arrays;
        end EMPLOYEES_cache;
    /is the initialization section, and my understanding is that this is supposed to run when any of the package variables or functions are referenced. Is that correct?
    With that in mind, I'm trying to call the onerow() function, but it's not working:
    HR@XE> select onerow(100) from dual;
    select onerow(100) from dual
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00904: "ONEROW": invalid identifier

    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00936: missing expressionHe provides the code genaa.sp, and a very brief description of what it does, but doesn't tell us how to run the generated code!
    Now, I have just done some googling, and it seems that what I am trying to do isn't possible. Apparently %ROWTYPE is PL/SQL, and not understood by SQL, so you can't call onerow() from sql. Correct?
    So I try wrapping the call in an exec:
    HR@XE> exec select employees_cache.onerow(100) from dual;
    BEGIN select employees_cache.onerow(100) from dual; END;
    ERROR at line 1:

    ORA-06550: line 1, column 7:

    Of course, now that I'm looking at it again, it seems that the way to go is indicated by the first error:
    PLS-00428: an INTO clause is expected in this SELECT statement
    So am I supposed to create a type of EMPLOYEES%ROWTYPE in a PL/SQL procedure, and the idea of this code, is that the first call to onerow() runs the initialiation code, which populates the cache, and all subsequent calls to onerow() (whether by my session or any other) will use the cache?
    I've had a stab at this, but still, no joy:
    create or replace procedure testcache is
        emp employees%rowtype;
        begin
            select employees_cache.onerow(100) from dual into emp;
            dbms_output.put_line('Emp id: ' || emp.employee_id);
        end testcache;

    Ha, figured it out

    Hopefully you also figured out that the example is just that: a technical example of how to use certain Oracle functionality. Unfortunately it is also an example of what you should NOT do in an actual application.
    That code isn't scaleable, uses expensive PGA memory, has no limit on the amount of memory that might be used and, contrary to your belief will result in EVERY SESSION HAVING ITS OWN CACHE of exactly the same data if the session even touches that package.
    Mr. Feuerstein is an expert in SQL and PL/SQL and his books cover virtually all of the functionality available. He also does an excellent job of providing examples to illustrate how that functionality can be combined and used. But the bulk of those examples are intended solely to illustrate the 'technical' aspects of the technology. They do not necessarily reflect best practices and they often do not address performance or other issues that need to be considered when actually using those techniques in a particular application. The examples show WHAT can be done but not necessarily WHEN or even IF a given technique should be used.
    It is up to the reader to learn the advantages and disadvantages of each technicalogical piece and determine when and how to use them.

    >
    That is correct. To be used by SQL you would need to create SQL types using the CREATE TYPE syntax. Currently that syntax does not support anything similar to %ROWTYPE.

    >
    NO! That is a common misconception. Each session has its own set of package variables. Any session that touches that package will cause the entire EMPLOYEES table to be queried and stored in a new associative array specifically for that session.
    That duplicates the cache for each session using the package. So while there might be some marginal benefit for a single session to cache data like that the benefit usually disappears if multiple sessions are involved.
    The main use case that I am aware of where such caching has benefit is during ETL processing of staged data when the processing of each record is too complex to be done in SQL and the records need to be BULK loaded and the data manipulated in a loop. Then using an associative array as a lookup table to quickly get a small amount of data can be effective. And if the ETL procedure is being processed in parallel (meaning different sessions) then for a small lookup array the additional memory use is tolerable.
    Mitigating against that is the fact that:
    1. Such frequently used data that you might store in the array is likely to be cached by Oracle in the buffer cache anyway
    2. Newer versions of Oracle now have more than one cache
    3. The SQL query needed to get the data from the table will use a bind variable that eliminates repeated hard parsing.
    4. The cursor and the buffer caches ARE SHARED by multiple sessions globally.
    So the short story is that there would rarely be a use case where ARRAYs like that would be preferred over accessing the data from the table.

  • Calling instance variable...

    Hi,
    Just wondeirng if I defined some instance variables in a class. If I want to call the variables in another class. Is it like <class_of_variables_are_defined>.<variables> ?

    Here are the codes I have written...I am still having a little trouble though
    Variables that I have defined in two different class...
    Ride.class
    public class Ride
         private String name;
         private int ticketsRequired, numberOfRiders;
         private float heightRequirement;
         public String getName()
              return name;
         public int getTicketsRequired()
              return ticketsRequired;
         public int getNumberOfRiders()
              return numberOfRiders;
         public float getHeightRequirement()
              return heightRequirement;
    TicketBooth.class
    public class TicketBooth
         private float moneyMade;
         private int availablePasses;
         public float TICKET_PRICE = 0.5f;
         public float PASS_PRICE = 16.5f;
         public float getMoneyMade()
              return moneyMade;
         public int getAvailablePasses()
              return availablePasses;
         public TicketBooth(int initAvailablePasses)
              availablePasses = initAvailablePasses;
                         .....Now when I try to use those private instance variables in Person.class, I got bunch of errors. I know private instances can only be used within the class they defined. How should I correct the code below?
    Person.class
                         public boolean buyPass(TicketBooth booth)
              if (hasPass == true && money >=  PASS_PRICE)
                   return true;
              else
                   return false;
         public boolean allowedToRide(Ride aRide)
              if (height >= heightRequirement &&
                 (hasPass == true || ticketCount >= ticketRequired))
                   return true;
              else
                   return false;
         public void getOn(Ride aRide)
              if ((allowedToRide(aRide) == true) && (hasPass == true))
                   availablePasses -= 1;
                   numberOfRiders += 1;
              else if(ticketCount >= ticketRequired)
                   numberOfRiders += 1;
                   ticketCount -= ticketsRequired;
                         .......

  • Call Peripheral Variables

    I have a script that uses the Desktop Administrator Call Variables 1 through 7 that are in the Enterprise Data section.  These fields are used for reporting against this script.  I now have a request to add some call variables in another script to report against this one as well.  Since it doesn't look like I can actually create more than the 10 Call Variables that are available in the Desktop Administrator, and because the stock variables are the only ones available in the set enterprise call info step, if I use the 10 call variables for this second script, will it mess up the reports for the other script if I use the same call variables but with different values in the second script?

    Hi Joe-
    To add to Gergely response to make the report less confusing you could filter the report by the Application(s) the calls came into.
    So, if you end up with five scripts and applications that all use Call Peripheral Variable 1 for Customer ID and Call Peripheral Variable 2 for Option Selected those applications could be grouped into one report.  Then if you had three other scripts and applications that use Call Peripheral Variable 1 for Caller City and Call Peripheral Variable 2 for Caller State as another group.
    Also- In the Call Peripheral Variables you have six possible tokens for each variable you can use (0-5, default is 'all') which you can use to pack additional data into.  In your report they will be pipe (|) delimited within each Call Peripheral Variable.

  • Create a Locals variable that remains after run completed (LabVIEW)

    I am trying to create a Locals variable that remains after a sequence run is completed.  When I use the PropertyObject to create a Locals variable, its scope is available only when the sequence is running.
    Respectfully,
    Robert

    The locals you see at runtime are a copy of the default locals in the file. Each instance of a running sequence needs its own copy of the locals because their values can vary in different running instances of the same sequence.
    The edit time definition of the sequence local variables has a property path such as:
    RunState.SequenceFile.Data.Seq["MainSequence"].Locals
    If you modify these locals and you want the file to be marked as modified so that the user is prompted to save, then you should also call:
    RunState.SequenceFile.AsPropertyObjectFile().IncChangeCount()
    Note that changing the edit time locals only affects new executions. You might need to modify both the edit time and runtime locals depending on what you are trying to accomplish.

  • How can I call a variable from another class

    hi
    If I have two classes : one and two
    In class two I have a variable called : action
    In class one I want to check what is the value of action.
    How can I call action?

    Thank you scorbett
    what you told me worked fine, but my problem is that MyClass2 is an application by itself that I don't want to be executed.
    Creating myClass2 as in the following:
    MyClass2 myClass2 = new MyClass2();
    [/code]
    executes myClass2.
    Can I prevent the exectuion of MyClass2, or is there another way to call the variable (action)?

  • BEx: How to change a Query Variable that is not visible in Filters List?

    Hello Experts,
    Good day, I'm currently editing an old query, I am changing the Query Variables with new ones, but I found one variable that I cannot replace.
    Please see the screenshot below, in the Query Properties Window [Variable Sequence Tab (right side of picture)] the Variable that I am trying to replace (Unit) is visible. But when I look for the variable in the "Filter Tab" (left side of picture) under Characteristic Restrictions, it doesn't exist in the list.
    How can I find this Variable and replace it with a new one?
    Other reports are still using this variable so it will impact the other reports if I simply edit the variable. So I need to replace it with a new variable instead.
    Thank you for your time.

    Hi,
            SInce you are searching for a variable for Unit, look into below screenshot and navigate to the variables.
    First click on drop down and select 'Entry for variable' then you will get lisl (after you click on drop down in 'Target Unit' drop down option.
    Normally these type of variable called 'Formula Variable' try editing any of the formula and locate the option as shown below,
    Hope it helps! don't forget to update the final solution and mark the correct/helpful answers.
    Remember it will help others to find the solution and motivate the members to answer your question.

  • Can a loaded SWF call a function that lives in the parent?

    I'm building a pretty simple Flash site in AS3. There is a
    main movie (main.swf) that simply loads different swfs via buttons
    on a main nav bar. The user clicks on a MC in "main.swf" and a
    function is called, loadMyContent("section1.swf"), is called and it
    animates in nicely. Other buttons use the same function, loading
    section2.swf, section3.swf, etc.
    I've defined how "loadMyContent()" works in the the main
    movie's document class file. It's all working fine when I just need
    to load content from a user action from the buttons that live in
    "main.swf". I want to call that same "loadContent" function from
    within "section1.swf" and have "main.swf" run it's "loadContent"
    fuction, but I can't seem to figure out how to make a child call a
    function that lives in the parent.
    Is there any way of having my child do this?
    I have a suspicion I may have to define that "loadContent"
    somewhere else, but I'm a little stumped now. I'm not really
    familiar with design patterns yet, although I want to get an
    understanding of them sometime soon. Can anyone offer some help
    with my immediate need or suggest a route to a solution?
    Thanks.

    kglad,
    Thank you very much! That worked perfectly. My section1 FLA
    is now compiling it's SWF without complaint.
    In case someone else is following this, the exact code I
    ended up using to cast "this.parent.parent" as a MovieClip is:
    MovieClip(this.parent.parent).loadMyContent("section2.swf");
    The discussion I think kglad is referencing is
    this
    discussion. If that's not it, just let me know. Again, kglad,
    thank you!

  • How to run the variable exit without calling the variable selection screen?

    Hi all
    I have a query with 2 variables 0P_PRQUA (Previous Calendar Quarter (SAP Exit)) and ZCCDAT02.
    ZCCDAT02 is a Key Date variable that is derived based on the last day of the quarter that is entered in 0P_PRQUA. The exit code works correctly when calling up the variable screen and ZCCDAT02 is derived properly.
    The problem is that 0P_PRQUA is set to "Can be changed in query navigation". So if the user changes the value of the quarter the exit is not triggered and the value of ZCCDAT02 does not change.
    Is it possible to trigger the exit or is there another way to do it? Ideas would be appreciated. I am trying to create a Web Template with a Dropbox box for the Quarter.
    Query is written in BW 3.X.
    Regards
    Chami

    Hi guys
    Just to restate the requirement. I want the user to be able to change the value of the variable, WITHOUT calling the variable selection screen.
    I want the user to be able to change the value of the quarter by using a dropdown box from within the web template. Once that is selected I want the value of ZCCDAT02 to be derived from the new value of the quarter.
    Regards
    Chami
