Camera Footage Archival in viewable format.

Help!!!!
I have been tasked with archiving a months worth of video footage from 13 cameras on our system in a viewable format.
The archive clip function is great for small clips however is not feasible to use when needing to collect as much footage as I am required to collect.
I can SFTP to the VSM and see the SMD files and can copy them so I have a copy of the data however I run into the issue with needing to retain them in a viewable format.
To make it more difficult the VSM is nearly full as it is the repository for the 30 days loops for all 50 cameras that are in use at our site.
Based on the time that it takes to pull a clip using the onboard tool it will take me over 360 hours using 13 separate computers to collect all the data if there are no interruptions and everything goes smoothly....
Version 6.3.2
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • MacPro and Editing Red Camera footage in FCP

Hi, I'm looking to but a Mac Pro, but am not sure the most economical spec required to edit 4K fotage from the Red, Rendering etc. I don't want frustration. I'm looking at 8-Core,4.64GHz, 16G RAM, but would the 1G video card from Apple the work for this or do I need a Ndivia 1G card? I'm told I need to get the 1G Ndivia...is that so?

1 - Will I be able to edit with both the Panasonic and Sony footage in my timeline??
Yes, but what is your intended timeline format? You might want to transcode the XDCAM HD to DCPRO HD and edit in a DVCPRO HD timeline rather than visa versa, or perhaps transcode both the XDCAM HD and DVCPRO HD sources to your intermediate tiemline format just to make your life easier.
2 - Do I need extra software to play the Sony XD Cam footage??
No, assuming you are running FCP 5.1.2 or later, but if you will need to ingest the footage from XDCAM disc yourself then you'll need Sony's free XDCAM Transfer software to bring it in.
3 - is there something else that could cause a problem??
I guess a freak wave could come out of nowhere ...

  • Importing RED camera footage into CS4

I've downloaded a plug in for CS4 and all the other RED camera footage imported in fine (9 out of 10 files) expect for the last file. Here's a picture of the file names:
When I try to import these files (either through file > import) or Media Browser I get the message that the file format is not supported. Does anybody have any idea of what I could do?
    Thanks!

    Robodog2,
I finally got back to my office and was able to send JIm a screenshot of the issue as the file was too big to send (1GB).
The file marked A010_C001_10172V_001.R3D is the one that should import into Premiere Cs4 but as you can tell from the screen shot above, it will not.
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • Workflow from Canon HD Camera to archive... dvd or digital file?

I have a Canon HF200 camcorder and I want to know the best workflow to get from camera to archived footage. Are my options to archive to DVD... or to a HD digital file?
I want to import my footage shot on my memory card, edit slightly, then output / archive and then delete the source files.
If I am shooting in HD, will my burning it to dvd take the footage to standard def?
Is the other option to output one mpeg / quicktime in HD that I could then view on either my macbook or my HD tv...?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice......

Is there any reason I should use Bridge instead of doing this?
It largely depends on how many images you are dealing with. If you're just editing one or two images per shoot, then you can keep doing it the way you're doing it.
But if you're going to work on many images, Bridge and the Adobe Photo Downloader give you a lot more options that might save you a lot of time and labor:
Import an entire card at once, or any selected pictures you preview, without needing to drag and drop
Automatically send photos to your hard drive in folders organized by shot date as they come in
Batch-rename files as they come in
Apply your copyright, keywords, etc. in bulk as each photo comes in
Compare and closely inspect the photos in Bridge, better than you can in the Finder, before you open the photos in Camera Raw
Edit images in bulk in Camera Raw within Bridge, without having to open Photoshop at all until you need it
Automatically make a second copy of every image in a backup folder, even on another disk
If you take advantage of customizing the import options, all you would have to do is sit back, click once, and let all the photos import to your specifications. Personally, I think the greater control and automation is easier, faster, and more powerful than using the Finder to track down the images I want and having to manually drag and drop them to the right folders.
Maybe you don't need it now, but if your shot volume goes up, drag-and-drop really will turn into a drag.

  • I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Pro

I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Project that is HD, and tried reconnect media with original HD movies (video), the sequence project got distorted for all the text, shapes used and all.. everything changed its orientation and scale.. Is there a way by which I can preserve my work done on DV PAL and switch it preserving its proportions, scale and orientation, but on a HD project sequence?? Appreciate your help and advice..

Yes.  A couple of ways that might work.
    First Way
What you need to do is load one of your hd clips in the viewer and edit into a new HD sequence.  Does it display correctionly?
OK, select the clip in the hd timeline and copy (command-c).  Now go to the HD sequence with the material that's distorted.  Select all (command-a) and paste attributes (option-v) and choose basic motion and distort.  That should maek things work.  What won't work is anything that you've adjusted as far as basic motion or distort in your PAL sequence.  That I'm pretty sure you'll have to redo.
    Second Way.
Choose your original PAL sequence and do a Media Manage changing the sequence preset to the appropriate HD paramenters with the media offline.  You then should be able to reconnect these clips with your original HD media.

  • Can I use Red Cam footage in FCE4

An actor friend of mine has shot a short film with a Red Cam and wants me to edit it.  I assume I'll have to convert it, but can I bring that footage into FCE4, and if so what codec should I use?  And how do I convert it, what program should be used.  When I'm finished editing what codec should I use to export it.  He wants to enter this film in some festivals so we want the quality to be as good as possible.  How will the finished exported quality compare to the original Red Cam footage?  I assume there will be a quality loss, but how much?  And are there any other issues I should be aware of?  Thanks very much--jqs

I don't know whether it will work with some sort of workflow that substitutes AIC foor Pro Res or not. I referred  you to the FCP article so you would see there are a number of moving parts involved. Although I don't know of FCE users editing RED, that's not to say it can't be done. Try some work-arounds and see (and let us know). Alternatively If you know someone with FCP, possibly they would allow you to cut it on their system?
    Good luck.
    Russ
BTW, I don't think it's possible to unmark this question as solved. If you're not getting views because people assume it's closed, you could always post another question.

  • ASCII format archives Vs Binary format archives

Hi, I need to know what is the difference between ASCII format archives and Binary format archives, and how can I create each one. Because in this moment I have created a bynary archive with output.format(), but i need the ascii format, so help me please.

If you mean jar archives they are multiple files compressed into a single JAR archive file. jar is a general-purpose archiving and compression tool, based on ZIP and the ZLIB compression format., ie it is in binary format.
When you create a jar you can -0 to store the files without compression, if that's what you mean.
ascii is an acronym for american standard code for information interchange AFAIK, and that is a seven bit character.
hope that helps. I'm not sure I understand the question correctly, pardon me if I didn't

  • Digitizing minidv cam footage in Premiere CS6

Has anyone else had any issues digitizing minidv cam footage in CS6 & if so, how did you trouble shoot the issue?

As long as your (unknown brand/model) camera is not actually analog, the video is already digital, so all you are doing with your Firewire connection is transferring from tape to computer

  • Synchronize 2 camera footage -- How to nudge smaller than frame increments

When synchronizing dual camera footage in FCP, my method of lining up audio events, how do I nudge the tracks closer together without snapping to the frame? In Pro Tools, it is called Spot editing. I can't find info about this in FCP Help. Sorry for the newbie question. Thanks for your help.

With video you can only edit down to the frame level. In fact I don't know of any video editors that let you move beyond frames as that's how video operates. You can edit and slip audio on a sub-frame level. Look in the manual under sub-frame audio editing for an explanation on how to do it as it's a tricky (but useful) feature.

  • Problems with JVC HD Cam footage

I've been given some JVC HD Cam footage. Quicktime will play the audio but not the picture, and identifies it as HDV 720p25.
When I create a timeline in FCP the same and attempt to copy the sequence over, FCP tells me that I do not have the correct codec.
    Can anybody help?

Can anybody help with this? If I pen the footage in Quicktime all I get is the audio, and a "Quicktime is missing some components" but it doesn't tell me what I need.

  • *NEW to FCP* How to see camera footage? Firewire DV Camera?

In iMovie (I know, I know, very consumer), you (for the most part), turn on the camera -
In Final Cut, what is the first step to see the camera attached to the computer via firewire?
    Thanks

Cool, did that last night before posting, saw it for a second then it dropped.
Today, I did it and it showed up (refresh from reboot?)....
But got the error, "audio not set at correct sample rate" after importing a small clip....
Assuming I probably have the audio set to 48K, the camera is an old MINI DV Sharp camera - not sure of the format or audio, probably 44.1? 16 bit?
Also, FWIW, in iMOVIE, I capture 10 minutes, after thumbnails, it played for 5 minutes, then became sluggish until I rebooted, any reason why?
Today in FCP, even with the error (AUDIO), it played fine.
Thoughts? Probability on audio setting? Wondering the best way to import 5 mini dv tapes from wedding, one that is full (ALL TAPES) and another to WORK on to edit down to 1~2 hour movie.
Will be shooting my account and the wife's account sometime this week which will then be edited in between - - the whole movie - as I think a reality POV with photo's and clips is the way to go (keep interest).
Also, recommendations on AUDIO for V/O for compression, et-cetera (LOGIC) or is there a way to do in FCP? Anyone have a voice over template (compression, expansion, EQ). Thanks as I am an audio guy more than FCP and am excited to really get deep with FCP, Motion, AE.
    Thanks
PS. On Capture settings...(beside preview window), on the pull down, all I have is DV NTSC 48 kHz..
and a bunch of other 48K settings - if I am getting an error, I am not sure on the audio setting.
    Thanks

  • XD Cam Footage

I am using CS4, and I was given XD Cam Footage.  I know Premiere
can bring in the MP4 footage that XD Cam shoots on, but I was told it was better to transcode the footage to .MXF files?
Is that a better workflow?  And if so, is there a good free Transcode software I should use for a PC that takes MP4 files and converts them to .MXF files?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Sony site has a free download for both mac & pc called xdcam clip browser, used mostly for xdcam ex cameras.
    http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-xdcamexsite/resource.downloads.bbsccms-assets-micro-xdc amex-downloads-XDCAMEXClipBrowserWindowsMac.shtml
You can then take the .mp4 files, view them and make them .mxf files.
We edit on CS3 PP with Matrox boards and PP reads the .mp4 files natively, and 720p or 1080p projects without render.
    Hope this helps.

  • Upgrading mac to edit hd-cam footage

    I've got a MacPro Quad 2.66, 1 gig memory, with 1 Radeon X1900.
I've got to edit some hd-cam footage and was wondering what i would need to upgrade to be able to do it without tearing whats left of my hair out!
    Any ideas?

You'll need is a RAID array of some kind, to support the data rate of HDCam video. And a good way to monitor it.
Proper HD monitors are hellaciously expensive, many of us make due with a tube-based NTSC monitor for color correction. For this you'll need a video card, from either BlackMagic or AJA. Apple Cinema displays can display full 1080 lines of resolution, with good enough color for reference, but not for color correction, and they won't accurately display interlacing.
Larry Jordan has a nice article on his fine web site about equipping your Final Cut Pro system, it's a great place to start.

  • HD / HDR-CX7 Footage Import (.MTS file format)

Anybody have a way to use .MTS footage in FCP?
Captured with a new Sony HD High Definition Handycam® Camcorder HDR-CX7. Looks as if it's Windows PC friendly, but can't find anything anywhere on how to get it to work with a Mac/FCP/QT, etc..

Downloaded the Beta 1.9b3 and the Tips widow suggests:
"MicroMV and HDV camera owners please use Apple's DVHSCap to transfer movies into your Mac; THEN use MPEG Streamclip to convert them"
    What is "Apple's DVHSCap"?
Why would I THEN have to convert?
I guess HDV is not ready for prime time. How the heck are people (consumers) using these cameras? Or is this a Mac and Sony battle? Do Windows users have it easy with Sony cameras? I understand that HD is a bit of a new thing, but to have NO info on how to capture or use the footage from a consumer product is a bit weird. Is anyone using a Sony HD camera with a Mac / FCP with ease? I know Panasonic HVX provides an import tool, did Sony leave us out in the cold? Is MTS a common file format? Sorry for all the shotgun questions, but I can't find anything in the PDF that came with the camera OR any web info that has helped or at least said "you're an idiot for purchasing this camera and expecting to use a Mac with it.." HELP. Or I'm off to return yet another Sony camera and get a Panasonic.
    Thanks

  • Video Clip Archiving Workflow and Format

I currently shoot a ton of video (and photos) with a 5d3 and I've ended up with a large and continually growing archive of video footage.
I do a lot of photo editing, but I'm able to use Lightroom to clean up my collection to only keep the ones I need and prune the rest. Unfortunately I haven't been able to do the same for video. I edit in the creative suite (mainly Premiere Pro, but some AfterEffects), and I can easily identify the portions of the footage that make clips I'd like to keep.
Is there a good workflow or file format to cut out and only save the clips I desire? I have lots of file space, but keeping around a ton of footage I will never use doesn't seem to be a good use of my space or time.
    Thanks a lot

Adobe's Prelude program might help ... though not an ideal solution, it's sort of Bridge modified for video purposes and re-conceptualized. It's primary intent on creation was to allow "junior editors" to log in vast amounts of say tv news show footage, do a quick scrub to find the useful bits, and then add metadata/key-wording to those while ingesting and also backing them up. If you do sub-clip things, it does transcode ... but as it can do a pretty decent job of say conversion to DNxHD or something equally "mezzanine" (as Jago says in the AdobeTV vid on transcoding), something of low compression and high editing and archival use.
Like Bridge, Prelude does NOT keep a database, so it's not really a DAM program in the way that Lightroom, Aperture, IdImager's "Photo Supreme", and several others are. I've put ... numerous ... requests on this in the Prelude "que" using the feature/bug request form. Even talked with some of the folks in this program "live" while at NAB last year. Yea, they know it would be useful ... but it would be a TON of work to add a database functionality to Prelude & it ain't on anybody's Must Do list that's working on the program.
So ... Prelude can ingest, add meta, transcode subclips & store them wherever. I know one person that figured he'd set up a folder structure that allowed him to "see" his shot types, something like: mountain streams; rivers; ocean; forest; general city views; traffic; highways; talking heads; ... something like that. With "main" folders & subfolders. That way he can navigate to and browse "likely" folders at need from PrPro.
IdImager's PhotoSupreme is a very inclusive DAM program and it does handle all file types ... still as well as most video files. As it DOES have a database, once you've put meta into a file, and "shown" that to P-Supreme, it will be able to find that and show you where it is by keyword/meta search. Whether it's "online" on a disc the computer can access live, or on a disc stored on a shelf. I don't know but I doubt it can sub-clip or transcode video files.
I worked with IdImager before it was bought out and transmogrified into PhotoSupreme. IdImage was a moderately easy DAM program ... which is to say, slightly less than rocket science. P-Supreme is much simpler to use, and has had much of the functionality of the original IdImager brought back.
So ... you've options, though not necessarily the "one" you might wish. It's an imperfect world ... sigh ...
