Can a non-RAC database use SCAN ?
I have a 4 node 11gR2 cluster which has all different kinds of versions ( 10g ,11gR1 & 11gR2 ) on both RAC & NON RAC .
I know for sure that I can use SCAN for non 11gR2 databases for RAC databases .
For standalone db's It seems like it is working intermitently but is this supported ? the reason why I ask is there is no documentation on how to configure or troubleshoot for non-RAC using SCAN .
Appreciate your help
Ravi
I was trying to find some information about the issue, but i think SCAN is really designed for RAC databases.
You don't really need to use the SCAN for what you just described:
you can update the client tnanames with the vip addresses of all nodes with FAILOVER = ON
Example:
(DESCRIPTION=
(ADDRESS_LIST=
(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=node1-vip)(PORT=1521))
(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=node2-vip)(PORT=1521))
(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=node3-vip)(PORT=1521))
(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=node4-vip)(PORT=1521))
(FAILOVER = ON)
(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER = DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=DB.WORLD))
However, you can try this (i never tried it, but i think it should work):
- See the document http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e10813/undrstnd.htm#BEICFAIC
+... If you do not set LOCAL_LISTENER, then the Database Agent automatically keeps the database associated with the Grid home's node listener updated...+
So don't set the LOCAL_LISTENER in your db.
- Update the client tnsnames with the SCAN if the version of the database is 11.2.0.1
- Try to see if it works fine
- Move your db to another node and try again

Can we put RAC database in Archivelog mode without shutting down
All,
Can we put RAC database in Archivelog mode without shutting down.
Currently our new production database (2 node RAC) is in no archive log mode, Need to enable archive log in the database...
I believe we need to set the cluster_database=false and then put the DB in archive log mode then we need to bounce the database to take effect...
Just curious to know in 11gR2 ...Can we put the RAC database in archive log mode without any downtime ...?Even RAC or non-RAC, database should bounced and enable/disable archive log mode from mount status.

Should I specify the Parallel parameter for an non-RAC database?
The Oracle documatation state as the following:
"The Oracle Database 10g Release 2 database controls and balances all parallel operations, based upon available resources, request priorities and actual system load." It show that Oracle can optimize the Parallel level automaticly.
Should I specify the Parallel parameter for a non-RAC database? Most of the transactions are small OLTP.What parallel parameter are you talking about?
Generally, you may benefit from parallelization in a very similar manner on RAC as on single instance system. And it is in both cases not sufficient to change the value of any initialization parameter to achieve parallelization of queries, DDL or DML.
Kind regards
Uwe

Can I create Oracle Database using Java ???
HI ...
Can I create a Database using Java... ? If yes can any one tell me how ? I mean provide some codeing help... ???If you mean a table yes, since the create table statement is exactly that, an SQL statement, if you mean an SID then I would have to say (AFAIK) no.

Can I build a database, using my Contacts and then email them?
If you mean email them as a group you need to get a group messaging app first. If you mean email the database you need to take a screen shot and email the photo.

Restore RAC to Non-Rac database
I am new to RAC and I was wondering if anyone has documentation or they have restored themselves a RAC database to a Non-RAC database. Could someone please help me.
Hi
Here are the steps that may help you:
Archive your redologs, take the rman backup and then run the rman duplicate and clone upto the SCN you want.
Hope this Helps

Hi,
Oracle RAC database 10.2.0.3/RedHat4 with 2 nodes.
In the begining we had an error ORA-600[12803] so only sys can connect to database I find the note 1026653.6 this note said that we need to create AUDSES$ sequence but befor that we have to restart the database.
When we stop the datanbase we had another ORA-600 and it's impossible to start it!!
Here is a coppy of our alert file:

Unable to connect to the database, using SCAN in 11gR2
Hi ALL,
I am in big trouble, I am working on 11gR2 4 node RAC database, and 1hr ago i have bounce the database for some issue. It came up and working fine for me, when i am connecting from the server. but the users (Performance team) who are connecting from application, it is not able to connect with SCAN address. we haven't changed any thing at the DB level or at OS level. and even i is not connecting from SQLDeveloper. It is thronging error message saying that "IO Exception: The network adopter could not establish the connection"
What are the things i need to check, Please give me your valuable suggestions and all of the application team is waiting for this issue to be resolved.
2 days ago, we have added 4th node to the existing 3node RAC. Is that given any issues.
below are the things i checked.
$->srvctl status scan
SCAN VIP scan1 is enabled
SCAN VIP scan1 is running on node qysqalccoredb01
SCAN VIP scan2 is enabled
SCAN VIP scan2 is running on node qysqalccoredb03
SCAN VIP scan3 is enabled
SCAN VIP scan3 is running on node qysqalccoredb02
$->srvctl status scan_listener
SCAN Listener LISTENER_SCAN1 is enabled
SCAN listener LISTENER_SCAN1 is running on node qysqalccoredb01
SCAN Listener LISTENER_SCAN2 is enabled
SCAN listener LISTENER_SCAN2 is running on node qysqalccoredb03
SCAN Listener LISTENER_SCAN3 is enabled
SCAN listener LISTENER_SCAN3 is running on node qysqalccoredb02
why it is not running on 4th node.
Also i have updated the SCAN info by resetting the local_listener parameter to use the scan address.
alter system set local_listener='(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=host-vip.ieptc.intuit.net)(PORT=1521))))' sid='sid1' scope=both;
do i need to do the below one as well.
alter system set remote_listener='scan-domain-name.example.com:1521' scope=both sid='*'
Please help me and thanks in advance.Hi;
For your issue i suggest close your thread here as changing thread status to answered and move it to Forum Home » Grid Computing » Real Application Clusters
which you can get more quick response

Duplicate RAC to non RAC database issue
Hi gurus,
Database version:Oracle 11.2.0.3
OS: Redhat 5.3
Im trying to cloning a RAC (2 nodes with asm) to non-RAC standalone database following this:
http://vsavenkov.oradba.ru/RAC2nonRAC.htm
I created the standalone database and modify the spfile, and i can connect without problems. At RAC we do backups everyday so i don't have to create a new one
My doubst are:
1) how to copy backup (they are in +FRA) to the other server? I imagine that the backup should have in both places, (standalone server and RAC server).
2)I'm going to use this script to clone but don't know how to check the SCN from backup. I will need the backup from 3 days ago, not today backup.
duplicate target database to 'Oasis' db_file_name_convert=('+FRA/grid/datafile/','/var/oracle/oradata/Oasis/')
logfile
group 1('/var/oracle/oradata/Oasis/REDO01.LOG') size 200M,
group 2 ('/var/oracle/oradata/Oasis/REDO02.LOG') size 200M,
group 3 ('/var/oracle/oradata/Oasis/REDO03.LOG') size 200M
until scn=XXXXXX ;
Thanks in advanceI just found how to resolve question 1):
asmcmd: cp.....

Enable/DIsable Services in RAC Database using srvctl
Hello,
I am using Oracle Database 11g on a two node RAC. For the service management on the RAC I use srvctl and I have problems in understanding why the tool offers redundant information for some services.
To be more exact, let's say I have a two node RAC, one database called DB_NAME and one instance on each node called DB_NAME1 and DB_NAME2.
I create a service called DB_SRV using srvctl like this:
srvctl add service -d DB_NAME -s DB_SRV -r DB_NAME1 -a DB_NAME2
Then I run srvctl config to see service parameters like this:
srvctl config service -d DB_NAME -s SRV_NAME
And I get the output:
Service name: DB_SRV
Service is enabled
Preferred instances: DB_NAME1
Available instances: DB_NAME2
So I can see that the the service DB_SRV is enabled by default, and I want to disable the service, like this:
srvctl disable service -d DB_NAME -s DB_SRV -i DB_NAME1
After than I run srvctl config again:
srvctl config service -d DB_NAME -s SRV_NAME
And I get the output:
Service name: DB_SRV
Service is enabled
Preferred instances: DB_NAME1
Available instances: DB_NAME2
Service is disabled on instances: DB_NAME1
So far,it all makes sense. The service is enabled to all the instances, but disabled for DB_NAME1 so this means the the service is enabled on DB_NAME2. All ok.
But then, I want to enable the service on DB_NAME2 (although it is already enabled there) and I run:
srvctl enable service -d DB_NAME -s DB_SRV -i DB_NAME2
After than I run srvctl config again:
srvctl config service -d DB_NAME -s SRV_NAME
And I get the output:
Service name: DB_SRV
Service is enabled
Preferred instances: DB_NAME1
Available instances: DB_NAME2
Service is enabled on instances: DB_NAME2
Service is disabled on instances: DB_NAME1
So my real question is:
Why isn't oracle giving me an error when I run
srvctl enable service -d DB_NAME -s DB_SRV -i DB_NAME2
and instead adds this line (redundant, I would say)
Service is enabled on instances: DB_NAME2
in the srvctl config output?
Thank you in advance!So for me it seems redundant because if the service is enabled (this means it is enabled for every instance in the RAC), you shouldn't be able to enable it on one of that instance again.
So in my last output I think that this line:
Service is enabled
is equal to this line
Service is enabled on instances: DB_NAME2
If I am wrong, can someone point the difference between the two lines based on my scenario?

Hi All,
I have a requirement to clone 2 RAC Database to Non-RAC.
Db and Clusterware version --->10.2.0.4
OS version -->OEL 4.6
Nodes in cluster ---> 2
Shared storage type --> ocfs
I have already prepared target server with OS 4.6 linux and database specific settings.
thanks in advance.on source db:
1. alter system switch logfile; alter database begin backup;
2. Copy all database files (ie. datafile, tempfile, control file, spfile/pfile, redo ... etc) to target server
3. alter database end backup;
On target server:
0. Set cluster_database=false in the pfile
1. Startup mount;
2. alter database datafile '<datafile>' end backup;
3. alter database open;
if you want to rename datafile & rename database, you need to recreate control file.

Hi,
Doing some database research.
Is Oracle Database 11g Express the only free edition of oracle db for even non-commercial use? Or is there a version that has unlimited User-data as long as it is for non-commercial use only?
ThanksOrtho wrote:

ThanksYes, Oracle XE is the database that you can use as free not just for non-commercial but for commercial purpose as well. But if your requirement is jus to go for the non-commercial purpose, you can use even the Enterprise Edition too which comes along with the development license.
That said, any question related to licensing must be directed to Oracle's Sales and to your local sales rep.

RAC to NON-RAC Cloning in R 12 using Rapid Clone
Hi,
We are using EBS 12.0.4 with DB version Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0.
Initilally the RAC to non RAC cloning were not supported using rapid clone for this.But from Oct 19 Oracle has certified the same.
Can anybody specify me the document which contain the step by step process for RAC to NON-RAC Cloning using Rapid Clone.I cant find this.
