Can I Add a .xls spreadsheet to Dashboard?
My personal phone book is a .xls Excel Spreadsheet. It is a pain to have to go to the desktop each time I want to look up a number. Any suggestions on how to get this document on either Dashboard or the Dock? thanks! Charles

I don't know about Dashboard, but getting it into the Dock is a piece of cake! Just drag the document into the right hand end of the Dock (documents live to the right of that tiny vertical dividing line) and Finder will create an alias of it which will live there until you ever decide to remove it.

Can't add new Widgets to Dashboard on main user account
I recently switched to a new MacBook Air and after the initial intstallation used migration assistent to move my old data to the MacBook Air. All works fine except the Dashboard. With the old useraccount (which is my main account) I can't add new widgets to the dashboard. When I download and install a new widget I can see it in the /user/library/widgets section, I can see it in the widget list in the dashboard but when I click on it or drag it up to the dashboard it closes the dashboard again.
I tried adding a new user and in works fine in that new account.
Here's what I did to try and solve it sofar:
1. Repaired permissions
2. Deleted the two .plist's in user/library/preferences
3. Deleted the Cache in user/library/cache
4. Checked the folder permissions in /user/library/widget and compared that with the newuser/library/widget
5. Downloaded the 10.6.6. combo update and reinstalled
This behaviour is with every new widget I tried to install.
I tried to find similar behaviour using google but so far no luck. Any suggestions?You have hosed preferences in the main user account. Create a new admin user account, log into it, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option, recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

I have tried that, but the system reads the emails as one long email and I can't find any way of separating them - it ignores spaces, colons and I have also tried putting them through a word doc... still does not work. It works perfectly easily on a PC system!! ( I have just moved to a mac!)

I'd like to take a screenshot of an important document to refer to when needed. Can something like this be added to Dashboard for quick access?
No, but it can be added to the Sidebar in a Finder (folder) window. Drag its icon into the Favorites area of the Sidebar, and it should stay there.
You can also add it to the Dock, if you wish. Just drag the image's icon to the Dock, between the dashed line and the Trash (in the area where folders reside), wait for the icons already there to move aside, then drop it in. Note that like the Sidebar, this placement is a specialised alias, and is not the file itself - so don't trash the original. -
Can't add rows to existing spreadsheet Numbers OS X Yosemite
I created a numbers spreadsheet with column filters and also popup menus for some columns I am trying to add additional rows to the spreadsheet I followed instructions from numbers:
Add or delete a row or column at the edge of the table: Click at the bottom or at the top of the table. (Drag the control to add or delete more than one row or column.) You can delete a row or column only if all of its cells are empty.
Insert or delete a row or column within the table: Click the table, move the pointer over a numbered or a lettered bar, click the arrow, then choose a command from the menu that appears.
but the options to add rows are shaded gray so you can't add rows but can add columns. the II for add columns is active but there is a double circle where the = should be at the top of the table.
I am a 20 year windows and excel user but am new to Apple and numbersJust guessing, but have you turned off the filters before trying to add rows? You can uncheck the box shown here:
After clicking the table, you can find this in the Filter panel at the right after choosing Sort & Filter from the toolbar.

Thanks in advance for reading this and offering any wisdom you have! I am not an expert in any of the following, so apologies if off base.
The basic problem is: I need to use Excel 2013 to support Excel 2003 (XLS) spreadsheets containing VBA 'CommandBars' references which don't seem to work in Excel 2013. Details below.
Most of our users are still using older desktop windows PCs and Office 2003! We are beginning to upgrade to laptops running Windows 8.1 with Office 2013. Of course, we IT technical people are using the new laptops first. These new laptops are
64 bit.
Years ago, someone did a lot of development with spreadsheets here in Excel 2003 file formats that automates many activities and routines. Now we with the new laptops are having to support this development using new machines.
There is a basic compatibility issue that appears when first opening these Excel 2003 files that have VBA code that I'll detail below; I seem able to get by that problem.
The current problem appears to be that the existing Excel 2003 VBA code has many references to: "For Each bar In Application.CommandBars". As I've learned, the Application.CommandBars VBA functionality is focused on older MS Office versions' menu
commands, but "...Starting from Office 2007 the Fluent UI is used instead." In other words, because MS Office isn't menu-driven beginning with version 2007 (uses 'the ribbon'), it appears that these references to: "For Each bar In Application.CommandBars"
create a basic incompatibility to opening these spreadsheets in Office 2013.
For a spreadsheet, after I resolve the issue detailed below and save it, when I reopen it I encounter error "Compile error: can't find project or library."
For example, the following code snippet:

I went into VBE's menu: Tools>References and check for anything marked MISSING, which I deselected. But I am still receiving this error.
I don't want to get into changing the code a lot to support both Excel 2003 and 2013 (I am no VBA expert, just a dabbler).
And Microsoft officially says that Office 2003 is incompatible with Windows 8 although Application.CommandBars seem to be somewhat supported in Office 2013 .
Are you aware of a quick VBA workaround to get by this?
•I could comment out the validations, commands for: "For Each bar In Application.CommandBars" but then the spreadsheet code probably won't work for users using Office 2003.
Alternatives would be:
•Installing Office 2003 on my Win 8.1 64 bit laptop anyway, in spite of MS's saying incompatible, since this thread discusses at least one person has been able to use Office 2003
•Keeping one older PC with Office 2003 on it for us to support the old Office 2003 code until everyone upgrades their systems

This seems resolvable by going into the VBA code and just adding element 'PtrSafe' where functions are declared; in other words, replacing VBA code "Declare Function" with "Declare PtrSafe Function" seems to get by this.Hi Allan_L,

The SCOM Management Server is in Domain A. I've tried it already and it has failed.
So just to clarify the method I used was to go to Administration>Security>User Roles. Then New User Role>Read-Only Operator. In the Create User Role Wizard I then gave the User Role a name, Clicked "Add" under User Role Members.
Then the Select Users or Groups window pops up and I changed the Locations from Domain A to Domain B and searched for the user, which it's able to find, then clicked "OK" to add it to the User Role members which it does just fine. On
the next page which is Group Scope I checked the one group I want this account to have access to and then click next. This brings me to Dashboards and Views where I click the radio button for "Only the dashboards and views selected in each tab are
approved" and chose the folder of dashboards I want this account to access and then click next. This brings me to the Summary and I click "Create". At this point it thinks for a moment then closes out the wizard but the new Read-Only
Operator does not appear. I then look in Event Viewer and see the Event I pasted above.
Am I doing something wrong here? Any guidance on how to get around this issue would be much appreciated.

MiniDisplay-to-? adapters ... ? replaced by VGA or DVI or HDMI
Best to use only 1 adapter to match the intended cable since mutliple-adapter setup (buy a VGA, then add VGA-DVI adapter) tendsto lose signal strength.
Also graphics chips run hotter driving external display, and since the graphics chip in Air is part of the CPU the CPU may throttle itself as the integrated graphics chip heats up.
Two modes of operation:
Mirror ... same image both displays
Extended ... the other screen is "extra screen space" -

Open a Finder window and click on the Macintosh HD on the left under Devices. One of the folders showing will be the applications folder; drag it onto the dock to the right of the System Preferences icon (individual apps can go to the left, but folders need to be to the right).

Complex xls spreadsheets dont open correcly?
im using a xls spreadsheet made for excel and it is not opening correctly in numbers. There are functions that doesnt work for some reason.
the most important thing is that it doesnt sum up the numbers.. anywhere.
The sheet goes for an entire year so there is 52 of these pages in one xls.
it didnt copy and paste correctly but the problem is still the same.

TotalI only had a minute to look at your file this morning. The conversion of Excel "times" into Numbers "Date & Time" format can be tricky and you have to know how the Date & Time format works.
The reason your formulas don't work is that they are constructed oddly. As an example, instead of =D73-C73 you are using =-C73+D73. Numbers is choking on the "-C73" part of the formula because there is no such thing as a negative date & time. If you rewrite the formulas in a normal way, the sums will work and they will result in a duration value. You can strip the duration to get an actual number. I think that answers your original question but there is more to be considered.
I do not know how Excel saves "times" internally but they get imported as Date & Time into Numbers because Numbers has no "time-only" cell format. The imported date is something like Jan 1 1899 so your "8:00" in Excel will become 8:00AM Jan 1, 1899 in Numbers. The cells are displaying only the time; you can see the date & time in the formula bar when you click on a cell. If you enter a new "time" into one of these cells, the new date that goes along with it will be today's date. Your formulas of the style =D73-C73 will give you the duration between then and the year 1899. Not what you are looking for I'm sure. You will need to strip the dates from the "date & time" cells before doing the math. You do this with the TIMEVALUE function. =(TIMEVALUE(D73) - TIMEVALUE(C73))*24. Excel has a TIMEVALUE function too but it isn't the same thing, it takes a string as the input parameter while Numbers takes a Date &Time.
With these differences in Excel and Numbers, you are going to have to stick with one or the other. I don't know if you had planned to go back and forth, I just wanted to note that it won't be so easy to do that. -

To get it back just go to System Preferences/Date & Time/Clock
Place a check mark next to 'Show date & time in the menu bar'
Select in the View section 'analog'
As for the Dashboard clock, if the instructions or its website does not mention you can also add clock to the menu bar, I guess you can't. There are 3rd party menu clocks which can be found on Versiontracker and Macupdate. -
Excel can't open Personal.xls
I have Office 2013 on Windows 8.1 but when I open Excel it says it can't open personal.xls. If I press Alt-F11 the VBA screen opens but there is no sign of personal.xls. The file exists and is in the folder C:\Users\Lorne\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART
with no obvious errors (like read only flags). That folder exists in the trusted locations screen and all the macros in personal.xls are digitally signed by my own personal signature which is also in the trusted publishers list.
If I continuously open and close Excel after 5 or 6 tries it eventually opens normally and all my macros magically reappear !
Any ideas what I should be looking for? It is a recent problem - Excel had been working normally for well over a year since I last changed anything in personal.xls.
LorneCan you remember the changing you've done in last time? add the content, modify the coding or even change the option?
In Excel 2013, if the add-ins or macros runs slowly when the file initial opened, it will be disabled automatically by Excel itself and block the normal behavior. Thus, please go to File > Options > Add-ins, check whether there is anything in
disalbled status. Enable it manually.
In other hands, I would like to know how the personal.xls was created initially. If it was created by Excel 2003 or even earlier Excel version, I recommand that we save as it in the new version of Excel as xlsx format when it opens normally.
The worst choice is, open the original file, copy and paste the content sheet by sheet to the new creating XLS/XLSX file to solve it. Thanks.

InfoView can't add Flash Files
Hi Experts,
I have several questions about InfoView.
1. When I install BO Edge Client Tools there is no InfoView avaliable. How can I get this tool for my clients? I thought it's the interface to the customer to display reports, dashboards, etc. Isn't that right?
2. In InfoView (Server Side) I dont have any options to add WebI or Xcelsius Flash Files. Have I get an extra license key for that or install a update or hot fix pack?

1. the Infoview is a web application when installed on the server side only, you can access the infoview just using a URL to your server
http://serverName:PortNumber/InfoViewApp/logon.jsp
2. you can add webi reports and Xcelsius dashboards to the enterprise and access them from the infoview , there is no extra license needed for that. from the Xcelsisu tool you have just click "File-> expot-> Business Objects Platform"
for sure you have to have the credentials to access the infoview and export to the enterprise as well
u have to have a user name and password for the BO enterprise
if you dont have, ask your administrator to give it for you.
