Can I influence amount of compression in Compressor to maximize on disc spa

I haven't time to trawl through all the existing posts to see if this is here, so if it exists somewhere else can you kindly just point me in its direction? Thanks
It's a simple question. I am making short videos in FCP (version 4.5). I have been using Compressor (v 1.2.1) to export finished movies and Roxio Toast to burn because I don't want to bother with menus. Currently I am putting single 3 minute long (or less) videos on a DVD for sending to festivals. I've been using the 60 min High Quality encode preset, and although the videos seem to look alright on disc the m2v file is typically only around 150 MB, leaving lots of unused space on the disc. Is there any way of making more use of the available disc space by using less compression and thereby getting the best quality possible? The original uncompressed DV file will be around 5 or 6Gig typically.
By the way I think I have to stick with mpeg2 because these DVDs have to be playable on standard players, and I don't know what kind of DVD players they will be played on.
Any advice appreciated, thanks.

I think that if you are satisfied with the final quality of your DVD image there is no reason to change the settings. You can adjust to higher bitrates in the settings, but most probably you'll get playback problems in your distributed DVDs.
If your image is good now, no reason to change it just to take more space !

  • Can't Get Acceptable Quaility Compression.  Help!

    Hello,
I am burning a very simple DVD of a project and no matter how high I set the Bit Rate, motion detection, etc, I still get blocky areas in my darker scenes that look terrible. I have tested almost every setting in compressor, DVD studio pro and the built-in MPEG 2 compressor in Quicktime with no luck.
The film is only 20 minutes and its a very beautifully shot 35mm short film. It would be a shame to send it out with these scenes looking so awful.
Is there a way to burn an MPEG 2 with no compression? Would it fit? Is there a better compressor on the market than the ones bundled with DVD studio pro? Is the problem in the source footage? The film was transferred to video at a top-grade NYC post house so that can't be the problem, can it? The quicktime looks beautiful.
I would hate to send this out on VHS. Any tips?

MPEG-2 is a lossy compression method so there's no way to make an MPEG-2 "with no compression."
While it is true that as the amount of compression goes up (file size/bitrate goes down) that MPEG-2 'throws-away' information (lossy), in practice, if properly compressed, MPEG-2 video can be very close to lossless. Superbit DVDs, for instance, are compressed with very low quantization. The quantization stage is the only aspect of MPEG-2 that is lossy. Other aspects of the compression, such as motion compensation, huffman tables etc, are exactly reconstructed during decoding. When the bit-budget is appropriate for the material, MPEG-2 is a high-performing codec.
You can verify this experimentally with our MPressionist premastering tool, which allows you to view the differences between your source material and compressed MPEG-2 version as 'pixel residue', a visual map of the actual per-pixel difference amounts per-frame throughout a compressed movie.
Compressor can definitely produce quality that is close to visually lossless. One customer I recall was having a problem with field dominance at transition points (FCP setting problem), and his particular program material, encoded with Compressor, looked excellent at 6.5 Mbs.

  • Mp3: choosing the amount of compression

I am on a custom-built pc, which includes 700 gigs of hard drives and 300 gigs of ram. I’m using Soundbooth 2.0.1 as part of the CS4 Master Collection, and I have high quality live audio recordings of readings of famous poems that I want to give away for free as downloads on one of my websites and provide a snippet to listen to on it. I want to save the edited Soundbooth  files as mp3s, but I’m lost when it comes to the amount of compression that I should choose. I’ve searched the literature and can’t find anything.
    Does someone have a clue?
    Karla

Here's a brief description of each of those functions, with some information on when you might use them.
Normalize:  Normalizing a file finds the loudest piece of the audio and adjusts the overall volume level so that this loudest piece is about as loud as it can get without clipping.  If this loudest bit was already clipping, then the volume of everything will be reduced.  This works well to boost levels as long as there aren't any parts that are much louder than the rest of the file, but if there is a big difference between the quieter and loudest parts of a file, it may not make much of a difference.
Hard Limit:  This boosts the volume (amplitude, actually) of an audio file, but prevent audio from clipping by setting a limit.  Any data that would exceed this limit is sort of squashed, so that if you overdo this tool, you can end up with distorted, muddy audio with little dynamic range.  It will be most useful when normalizing a file doesn't change the quieter passages much because of a spike or loud passage.
Soundbooth's "Louder" button:  The concept behind this tool was to address YOU!  Its purpose is to help make audio louder without clipping and with as little damage and degradation to the file as possible.  The first click performs a Normalize.  Not loud enough?  Click it again and it performs a Hard Limit amplification, to around -.3dB.  If there are still passages you feel are too quiet, you can continue to click it, though it might be damaging to the loudest parts of the file.
Honestly, as your dealing with recordings of spoken word poetry, there might not be a perfect, single solution.  Is the passage meant to have quiet, solemn passages followed by shouts of gusto?  In this case, performing too much volume correction would flatten these levels and reduce the impact.  Like a piece of classical music, it might have soothing passages followed by loud, climactic, powerful choruses before returning to sublime mellowness.  However, your intended playback device will be a factor as well.  Subtle dynamics sounds great on a large home stereo, but on a set of cheap laptop speakers, the listener would probably miss most of it.  If you're intended audience will likely be listening at their computers, on computer speakers or a laptop, then I would recommend foregoing the subtlety and making these recordings loud.
If the recording is entirely too quiet:  Normalize should help boost the level so that the height of the waveform, and therefore the amplitude level of the audio, is near the top and bottom of the display without going outside.
If the levels are wildly different, and it's apparent they were not supposed to be:  Try using Equalize Volume Levels to obtain a consistent level.  Then, if needed, use normalize or amplify to bring the level up.
You might also want to take a look at the "Match Volume" tool in the TASKS panel.  This will let you drag in several files at once and normalize them to either some average level - for instance, -3dB - or choose one of the files you're satisfied with as a Reference File, boosting all of the files to resemble that.

  • I can't get the h264 compressed video frame buffer

hello everybody, i tried to develop video streaming App on iPhone 4. But i can't get the h264 compressed video frame buffer before streaming these frames to network. Could anybody please tell me how to do this, thanks!!!

Look to see if you still have A.Pack installed on your computer; it should be in the Applications folder on your boot drive.  That's what was used for AC3 encoding prior to Compressor 3.   In the meantime, you could lower the bit rate of the video in order to use the AIF audio file on your DVD.

  • WLC RF Group Leader election - can config. influence this?

    Hi,
    Can config. influence this?
    Regards, MH

    Hi Mark,
    Hope all is well with you :) The answer to this question is not really. Have a look at why this is;
    RF Group Leader
The members of an RF group elect an RF group leader to maintain a "master" power and channel scheme for the group. The RF group leader is dynamically chosen and cannot be selected by the user. In addition, the RF group leader can change at any time, depending on the RRM algorithm calculations.
The RF group leader analyzes real-time radio data collected by the system and calculates the master power and channel plan. The RRM algorithms try to optimize around a signal strength of -65 dBm between all access points and to avoid 802.11 co-channel interference and contention as well as non-802.11 interference. The RRM algorithms employ dampening calculations to minimize system-wide dynamic changes. The end result is dynamically calculated optimal power and channel planning that is responsive to an always changing RF environment.
The RRM algorithms run at a specified updated interval, which is 600 seconds by default. Between update intervals, the RF group leader sends keep-alive messages to each of the RF group members and collects real-time RF data.
The RF Group Name is an ASCII string configured per wireless LAN controller (WLC). The grouping algorithm elects the RF Group leader that, in turn, calculates the Transmit Power Control (TPC) and Dynamic Channel Assignment (DCA) for the entire RF Group. The exception is Coverage Hole algorithm (CHA), which is run per WLC. Because RF Grouping is dynamic, and the algorithm runs at 600-second intervals by default, there might be an instance where new neighbors are heard (or existing neighbors are no longer heard). This causes a change in the RF Group that could result in the election of a new Leader (for one or multiple logical RF Groups). At this instance, the Tx Power Threshold of the new group leader is used in the TPC algorithm. If the value of this threshold is inconsistent across multiple controllers that share the same RF Group Name, this can result in discrepancies in resultant Tx power levels when the TPC is run.

  • How I can see the amount of sticky entries exist on CSM

    Hi everyone,
I would like to know how I can see the amount of sticky entries exist on CSM.
I understand I can not see the amount of sticky entries by executing one "show"
    command on Cat6k/CSM.
So I have to calculate several output of "show ip slb sticky" to see it.
However, I would like to get it by simple way.
So I tried the following test by using SNMP (SNMP-GET point to several instance
    of "slbStats", of 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.161.1.1.1.1)
    Client ----- CSM ----- Server
1: Reboot CSM to clear/initialize sticky table
2: Client send ping to Server to confirm that the result of counter of "slbStats"
    remains zero (0).
In this case, I understand CSM should not create an entry on sticky table because
the packet pass through CSM is not either TCP or UDP.
3: Then I tried to SNMP-GET to CSM point to several instance of "slbStats"
The result of this SNMP-GET is as follows:
    Before sending ping
    slbStatsCreatedConnections.2 : 0
    slbStatsCreatedHCConnections.2 : 0
    slbStatsEstablishedConnections.2 : 0
    slbStatsEstablishedHCConnections.2 : 0
    slbStatsDestroyedConnections.2 : 0
    slbStatsDestroyedHCCConnections.2 : 0
    After sending ping
    slbStatsCreatedConnections.2 : 4
    slbStatsCreatedHCConnections.2 : 4
    slbStatsEstablishedConnections.2 : 1
    slbStatsEstablishedHCConnections.2 : 1
    slbStatsDestroyedConnections.2 : 3
    slbStatsDestroyedHCCConnections.2 : 3
I wonder why all of above MIB objects are increased despite of the packets pass
    through CSM are ICMP.
So I can not determine whether I should use this method (using SNMP) or not to
see correct value of the amount of sticky entries
And I would like to know alternative method to see it by SNMP or other simple way.
Your information would be greatly appreciated

    Hi Gilles,
Thank you very much for your pointing and suggestion and I am sorry for my delay response.
I understand there are two kind of CLI on CSM depend on using CSM mode or RP mode.
    - show command begins with "show ip slb" when using CSM mode (ip slb mode csm)
    - show command begins with "show mode csm x" when using RP mode (ip slb mode rp)
And "show mod csm x sticky config" command can be done on RP mode only.
So I tried to "show ip slb sticky config" command on CSM mode, but I could not find
    "config" argument as follows,
    ct65svf1#sh ip slb sticky ?
client sticky associated with a specific client IP address
    groups list configured sticky groups
    | Output modifiers
    ct65svf1#sh ip slb sticky
So I think, on CSM mode, I can not calculate the amount of sticky entry by executing one
    show command.
    Is my understanding correct ?
    Best regards,

  • Have Visa but can't Sent Amount Gift

My account already have Visa card, i can buy things on iTunes Store but i can't send amount gift to my sister, what should i do?

Do you currently have a credit card set up in your iTunes store Enter Payment Information screen?
If so, grab a recent statement for that card and check to make sure that the address that shows up in your Enter Payment Information screenexactly matches the address showing on your credit card statement. For example, if your address in the credit card statement says "Street", the iTunes screen has to also say "Street" (Not St or Str.) Also match the capitalisation of the address on your statement. (If it says STREET in the statement make it say STREET in the iTunes screen, not Street or street.)
Also make sure that your name in the iTunes screen exactly matches the one in your statement. (Say, if you've got a middle initial in the credit card statement name, you need one in the iTunes screen.)
After doing that, does that get you past the invalid address thing?
If not, there's some additional suggestions in the following post:

  • How can I add new content in iDVD to a DVD-RW disc which has ample remaining free space? After preparing the new video for burning and clicking on Burn to iDVD, I get a window saying the disc's already recorded and that I can either Erase or Eject.

How can I add new content in iDVD to a DVD-RW disc with a video previously successfully recorded on it? (The disc has ample remaining free space.)
After preparing the new video for burning and clicking in the File menu on Burn to iDVD, I get a window saying the disc's already recorded and that I can either Erase or Eject. My assumption has been that iDVD would automatically find the free space and continue with the new recording from there. I'd be grateful if anyone can shine light on this.

There are, but not with a DVD written as a movie disk. It must be closed when completed, or it doesn't work.
Apple's built in Burn utility also automatically closes any data CD, DVD or Blu-ray disk you burn. Doesn't matter how much space is unused, you can't use it. You'd have to use a more advanced disk creation app, such as Toast Titanium. I then have the option of choosing to write the data as a session:
I can keep doing this until the disk is full. If I've written five sessions to the disk, when I put it in the drive, five CD/DVD icons will appear on the desktop since the OS will treat each session as if they are separate physical disks. At any point you choose Write Disk when writing a group of data, that means you're closing the disk, and again can't add anything after that. So if I had written two sessions, and the third was Write Disk, it's over. I can't put anything else on that disk.

  • My HD is almost full. I need to add space. Can I use an external HD to continue using my startup disc as it is?

My HD is almost full. I need to add space. Can I use an external HD to continue using my startup disc as it is?
I create music and have run out of space. the message says 'your startup disc is almost full', and i just thought maybe buying an external hard drive and using it as the startup disc or whatever would do the trick. Does anyone know? Thanks!

External hard drives are relatively inexpensive...see some of those on OWC, www.macsales.com
You can use a large external drive to provide additional space by simply saving material to that volume instead of the startup disk.  You can also partition the external drive to use part for Time Machine backups, and another partition for extended space.  Or a third partition for a clone of the boot system made by Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, both free downloads, so should the internal drive have problems you could always boot from the external partition.
All of that can be done from Disk Utility.
Keep in mind that Mac OS X gets very unhappy when there is less than 15% of the startup disk space free.

  • Can I change the administrator password on Snow Leopard using Tiger discs

Hi, I had a fault with my mac and the o/s had to be reinstalled. The shop put Snow Leopard on my mac and I changed the password which I later forgot. My mac instructed me to input the install discs etc but I only have my original Tiger Install discs. I rang the shop but they say they are not allowed to change the password but that I can do it with my old discs.
I tried to reset it but it wouldn't work and on only the first occasion when I restarted with the disc and by pressing C on reboot etc did it launch into the 'select language' etc. Now every time I try, it just starts normally.
Is there any way I can change the administrator password on Snow Leopard using my Tiger discs? thanks

Why didn't the "shop" give you the Snow Leopard system discs? You need those to troubleshoot. Especially if you need to use Apple's Hardware Test. Strange.
