Can I live without asmlib in Linux ?

Platform : RHEL 5(64 bit)
Grid Version: 11.2.0.3
I have only worked in Solaris and AIX before. I've done several RAC installations in Solaris/AIX. Our company has decided to move some of our RAC implementations to Linux because of the costs.
From google and OTN , I gather that you need to create 'ASM disks' by labelling the LUNs using a binary called asmlib.
Eventually it will look like this
select path from v$asm_disk
PATH
ORCL:DISK1
ORCL:DISK2
ORCL:DISK3
ORCL:DISK4
.In Linux, can't I deal with the LUNs directly like we do in Solaris. ie. In solaris, when we create diskgroups, we can specify the LUN names directly like
/dev/rdsk/c4ikdzs3
/dev/rdsk/c4ikdzs4Similarly , in Linux is there a way I can specify the LUNs like below directly while creating diskgroups ?
/dev/disk1
/dev/disk2

Thank you Andy, Onedbaguru.
Read about multipathd . It looks a bit complicated to ME.
You need EITHER udev rules list or multipathd to maintain permissions and path persistence for LUNs. Right ? I mean, we don't need both . Do we?
This is what I gather from googling/OTN if go with udev rules list option. Once the LUNs are attached to servers, it will apper in /dev directory like below
/dev/sdc1
/dev/sdc2
/dev/sdc3
/dev/sdc4
/dev/sdc5+++++++++++++++++++ STEPS start +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
step1.
=============
Create a file named 99-oracle-asmdevices.rules with the following contents
KERNEL=="/dev/sdc1", OWNER="oracle", GROUP="dba", MODE="660"
KERNEL=="/dev/sdc2", OWNER="oracle", GROUP="dba", MODE="660"
KERNEL=="/dev/sdc3", OWNER="oracle", GROUP="dba", MODE="660"
KERNEL=="/dev/sdc4", OWNER="oracle", GROUP="dba", MODE="660"
KERNEL=="/dev/sdc5", OWNER="oracle", GROUP="dba", MODE="660"and place this file in
/etc/udev/rules.d/Step2.
===================
Run the below 2 commands
# /sbin/udevcontrol reload_rules
# /sbin/start_udev
Starting udev:                                             [  OK  ]Scp the file to node2 to same location and run the 2 commands mentioned above
+++++++++++++++++++ STEPS end +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Hope the above mentioned steps are correct.
I have one more question:
For each new LUN getting attached to the RAC node, should I add a new line ? For eg , If I attached a LUN
/dev/sdc6should I add a new line like below to the .rules file ?
KERNEL=="/dev/sdc6", OWNER="oracle", GROUP="dba", MODE="660"

    Can I live without lion?

    Yes.
    For now.
    Some day, in the future, you will want to use an application that only runs on Lion.
    Then, you will be forced to make a decision.

  • Plug-ins you can't live without

    What are your favorite third party plug-in? I'm looking for drum machine, synth, and sampler recommendations for use on an Intel Mac with Logic. With my old powerbook and Logic 4.8.2 I was using mostly hardware. Now with the new Macbook Pro I'd like to get into using more plug-ins, but i don't have much experience with them and their integration into Logic. I was considering the Native Instruments stuff, Battery, Absynth etc... if anyone can comment on the quality and integration. Also, any more obscure gems out there you can recommend would be great. I'd really like something that can do what a Elektron Machinedrum can do in software. Or maybe a good 909 or 303 emulator?

    What are your favorite third party plug-in? I'm looking for drum machine,
    synth, and sampler recommendations for use on an Intel Mac with Logic.
    what kind of music do you make? helps to know, different things are good for different styles of music.
    anyway, a couple of things I'd rather not live without, in no particular order are:
    ohmboys delay.
    I find the delays in logic to be really creatively lacking and just plain average. the tape delay sounds authentic and all, but it kind of just does the one thing, and frankly I can pick it whenever I hear it in anything nowadays. ohmboys delay gives you a lot more colour and a lot more ways to create a bit of mayhem. and then it also has that awesome loop button, which is fantastic for controlling the madness and using it in musical ways. it's my go-to delay for when I'm working on remixes.
    UAD card.
    on my G5 system I have a UAD card with all the plug ins enabled. I'd have to say that it's a keeper as well. I miss those plug ins on my MBP setup, but I don't think I miss them enough that I'll buy one of those portable units that UA are releasing. frankly I think I'll replace the concept of the UAD on my portable machine with URS plug ins, or maybe a liquid mix later on.. much more bang for the buck, and really for me the only plug ins that I use all the time on the UAD are the dynamics and EQ ones, 1176, LA2A, pultec, neve.. and also the plate reverb.. but maybe I'll make space designer impulses of that and see how that goes.
    melodyne plug in.
    not much to say about this, it's just so good at what it does and so dang useful. I think with few exceptions, most users should have it.
    sonalksis EQs and comps.
    hard to get super super excited about these, but they're just really good and really solid. you can tell that there's good quality design inside these things, right down to no latency operation and just good reliable results. I use them all the time on my MBP setup cos I don't have many good EQs and comps on that machine, and they are by far the best I have.
    ivory piano.
    I love the intimate sound I can get from this plug in. a lot of people rave about NI akoustic piano and how much better it is. I can't say, but I love ivory for the piano sounds I usually want to go for.
    ohmforce symptohm melohman.
    I just love looking at the interface of this thing.. it's like looking at a comic or a zine, with touches of manga. also, I think it's a pretty underrated synth. it makes some beautiful, bizarre harmonic resonant sounds, and also some solid punchy sounds too. not everyone is using it, so it brings something unique to things, when everybody else's idea of unique is absynth..
    reaktor.
    I doubt I'll ever fully and deeply get into reaktor. but when I need to go off on a trek to make soundscapes or I feel the need to try and bring some randomness to a track, I'll often spend some time going through my reaktor ensembles to see what happens.
    URS neve channel EQs.
    I think these are lovely. used them a lot on a film score once, to bring out the grain and sizzle in some sculpture sounds I made. they are also great for rolling off bottom end and driving the midrange in sounds, to bring out a great presence. very very good for shaping your sounds into main characters in a mix.

  • How can I live without vector paint?

    hey everyone
    I use the vector paint plugin in AECS3 to create hand-drawn style line art animations.
    I use vector paint applied to a solid together with my wacom cintiq to draw lines freehand. sometimes I use the 'animate strokes' setting within vector paint to make it look like the strokes are being drawn on.
    there are some downsides to this plugin over the standard AE paint engine (principally that I cannot edit individual strokes, easily retime my strokes, or apply masks to my paint layer without precomping), but vector paint wins for me for 2 critical reasons:
    1. I can paint directly in the comp window, meaning I can easily trace directly over another layer in my comp; and
    2. Vector Paint has a built in wiggle engine which enables me to wiggle my paint strokes - this makes the images I draw feel dynamic and alive. it suits the simple hand drawn style of the animation.
    as anyone who reads this forum will be aware, vector paint has been removed from CS5. I am needing to upgrade my creative suite but I need to be able to continue making this look for my clients.
    my question to you all is how can I continue creating animations in this style with CS5?
    Any feedback would be *most* appreciated!
    cheers
    dan
    here are some examples of the kind of animation I am refferring to -some of these are WIPs so appear quite rough!

    thanks Todd and Mylenium for your responses.
    With regard to Myleniums first point:
    1. I can paint directly in the comp window, meaning I can easily trace directly over another layer in my comp
    You can do that with normal paint just the same by painting on solids on top and setting the brush to paint on transparent and layer and comp windows side by side. You can even get that functionality in the layer window by adding effects like CC Composite before the paint to enforce rendering of the current frame.
    I have tried this setup with layer and comp windows next to each other but the result is that I still have to draw my strokes in the layer window (which is transparent, so appears empty). Once I have drawn a stroke it appears in the comp window. So I was unable to use this workflow to trace over an existing layer in my comp. Can you expand on the use of CC composite in this way?  I tried adding this effect and playing with the settings but couldn't find a way to use it in this context.
    Also, with regard to point 2 (and Todd's helpful link):
    Occassionally also consider shape layers - there's a Wiggle Path modifier there, after all.
    I have tried working with the wiggle path option in here but the results are totally different to the wiggles produced using vector paint - I'm guessing its a different algorithm or something? the variables are quite different in either package.
    Can anyone here point me to a 3rd party plugin that does the same thing as vector paint? Mylenium suggested video gogh but this plugin is more about making video layers resemble brushstrokes. I am simply wanting to draw brush strokes directly into the after effects comp window and animate them, and to be able to apply some kind of wiggle modifier to create a degree of organic 'dynamicness'.
    Mylenium also says:
    Yes, it's been much lamented but it's not coming back - for a while, anyway.
    When you say 'for a while', do you mean CS 6? CS7? I am starting to feel like my options are to sit tight with AECS3 until the situation changes, or to move away from AE altogether and work with different software to acheive this look (flash? toon boom? any suggestions?). If I had some confidence that a new improved tool featuring the same functionality as vector paint was going to be introduced in the next version of AE I would feel much better about working around it for the time being.
    ... yes I have filed a feature request! Please If you find this post in your own search about vector paint, can you also file a request? Vector paint had its downsides, but it is pretty clear to me that taking it away has reduced after effect's functionality in this area, which is a profound shame. I have won awards for projects that have been built around vector paint material, but I now cannot keep my AE version current without losing the ability to produce this look. thats a total bummer!

  • Apple Id's, Old Operating systems and an app that my partner can't live without

    Hi,
    I'll apologise in advance, I'm less than capable when it comes to technology but I'll explain my dilema to the best of my ability in the vain hope that one you guys or girls out there can come to my rescue.
    •Bought my partner an iphone 3G second hand it was going cheap.
    •'Assigned' it to one of my computers at work that had an unused itunes on it and created an apple id and password on it.
    •Downloaded a few apps that I thought she may like.
    •All fine.
    Then.......
    •Partner gets new laptop.
    •Downloads itunes and creates second apple id for use with said iphone.
    •Plugs in iphone, loses apps on it.
    •Downloads favourite apps that she's just lost.
    •Particular app that she wants and has become obsessed by which I wish I'd never introduced her to has been updated and now only works with ios 4.3.
    So......
    •I plug her phone back into the original computer with the first id which still has the app that works on 4.2.1 to reinstall it to her phone and for some bizarre reason I can't get it back onto her phone.
    In short, I'm desperate for any help getting this app back onto her phone. Please someone help!
    Thanks in advance,
    Bert

    I'm all cool with  that, she's done that, its just that the app she's bought isn't compatable with her operating system. Is there any way I can get old of a legacy version, i've contacted the developer and unsurprisingly they didn't get back to me. Surely there must be a way to get the app that is compatable, that's on my works machine back onto her phone?

  • I love new updates; I read the information, but missed that Dashland, as with last update, does not work. Can't live without it. I've updated. Now, what to do?

    Last update clearly informed me that Dashlane did not work with the update. I read the information this morning before downloading and did not see that once again, Dashlane will not work. I must have access to my passwords. Do I have any recourse other than re-installing the last version of Firefox? Or, using Safari in the interim so I can use iCloud to reveal passwords?

  • Please help! I want my music back! I can't live without music!!

    I just got a new PC and we downloaded iTunes as soon as we got it. My dads library was on there already so I decided to make my own. I synced my iPod and next thing you know all of my bought music is gone. How can I recover it? It was about 40 songs. And I bought all of them! If I can't get them back, can I get a refund?

    You only get one download of music and it is up to you to make a backup.  Do you have the other music on another computer so you can move it to the new computer?  Apple has been know to sometimes authorize a redownload.  You can contact them here (select iTunes account and billing).

  • The ONE feature Spaces can't live without

    A user just said something to me that makes so much sense!
    When you go into the spaces preferences, why doesn't it have a list of all the currently open applications already there for you so that you can just assign them to a space?
    That would be Mac-like.

    Agreed. It would be great to be able to just say something like "open these apps by default as I have arranged them RIGHT NOW."
    I'd suggest submitting feedback... that's a great idea!

  • Plugins u can't live without

    so i'm just curious as to what you guys out there are using right now and for what -(as for plugins)
    besides the gazillion in logic that are already loaded, there's still a few programs out there that make it easier for us, for example!
    mine is melodyne, just got it yesterday and it's kinda like when i first got familiar with logic, i would think to myself- the possibilities!
    let's hear ur 3rd parties

    *NI Reaktor 5 - I use this for everything - especially loop mangling/drum slicing - Sounddesign - sequenced Effects - Delays - Reverbs - Sequencer sounds - Pads and stuff I can't even descirbe with words
    *NI Kontakt 2/3 - Experimental soundscapes derived from my own field recordings and real sounding natural Instruments - orchestral stuff
    *NI Massive - a real sonic monster great for warm pads, crunchy basses, sequencer textures, noises
    *AAS Tassman - Great for fat warm Bassdrones - physical modelling Instruments, especially the wooden sounds are awesome
    *AAS String Studio - Superb for experimental string, bass and metal sounds - sound like no other synth out there
    *AAS - Ultra Analog - great analog sounds and arpeggios - good for lead sounds too
    *AAS - Lounge Lizard - nice and authentic Rhodes sounds
    *iZotope pHATmatik - Great loopslicer, easy to handle - good sound
    *iZotope Spectron - spectral delay sounds beyond words
    *iZotope Ozone 3 - My "must" Plug In for Mastering and Bus Multicompression
    *iZotope Vinyl - if you need some vinyl dirt on your tracks this is it
    Outboard
    *Nordlead - yeah I still use it
    *Kurzweill 2600 XS - Also still can't get rid it, thousands of samples from the past - the FX section still sounds awesome
    *Korg Z1 - Another veteran, still nice for a warm pad sound
    free Plugs:
    *The whole Michael Norris stuff especially the Spectral Plug Ins - they are just fantastic
    *Airwindows Plugs are useful - especially the density Plug adds "crunch" to your sounds
    *Alphakanal Automat - great little synth with a fat sound
    *Triple Cheese - warm pads, strange textures
    *Smarteletronix - some pretty crazy plugs there, I use Cyanide (distortion) quite frequently and Ambience generates strange sounding reverbs - very good for short drumverbs
    *KT Granulator - grains from outer space
    *LUXONIX LFX 1310 - Great Multi FX Plug In

  • Can I live without logging??

    Are all the logs in the console really needed? Can I disable all that logging and how? Is it taking resources from the system unnecessarily? Can someone shed some light on this?

    I would advise you to leave this as is and not try to disable anything. It is designed to work the way it does and it is not wasting any system resources.

  • [SOLVED] Can Openbox function without ConsoleKit ?

    I've very recently converted to a "pure" systemd Arch system & desire to be without ConsoleKit, if it is possible at this stage.
    I tried to remove ConsoleKit with pacman but was blocked with the following error:
    handy ~ $ pdelete consolekit
    checking dependencies...
    error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
    :: oblogout: requires consolekit
    Which brings two questions:
    Can Openbox live without ConsoleKit?
    If so, how?
    Thanks for your time.

    I use systemctl reboot & poweroff from buttons configured for the job in Worker. I used to use a couple of simple scripts that first umounted my three NAS NFS shares (to get around the time out problem) & then shutdown or reboot. So I NEVER use oblogout anyway.
    The new systemctl commands reboot & poweroff, automatically umount my NFS shares first & then do what they are named. Fantastic, this is how it is supposed to be.
