Can I make a Recovery Task "configurable"?

Hi all,
I built a recovery task in a cross platform MP that replaces a Linux shell script, if the MD5 checksum does not match.
When I use hard coded paths, this works fine, but I wanted to make it more "configurable". The only way that came into my mind was using an environment variable. We do this in an other MP, but not in a recovery task but in a Console task, e.g.:
<Application>%windir%\system32\mmc.exe</Application>
The above mentioned console task works fine, but as soon as I replace the path of the file with an environment variable, the recovery task does not work any more.
Any suggestions?

This way it works. When I replace the path in the "SourceFile" tag or in the "TargetFile" tag by a self defined environment variable, the recovery does not work any more.
As far as I understand, the monitor does not know anything about the recovery - how could / should I pass something "from the monitor" to the recovery task?
What do I don't see?

I am trying to install lion and receive a message saying it can't make a recovery disk. I am using a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac. I do have bootcamp on it, but was never able to install Windows.

What happens when Lion installs is it creates a Lion Recovery Partition at the very bottom area of the drive, this is used to Command R boot into and perform Disk Utility Repairs and reinstall Lion from Apple's servers much like a 10.6 disk will.
So when you ran the Lion installer, it couldn't create this small partiiton, either because the GUID partition table (the map of your paartitions on the drive) is borked or there is data all the way to the bottom of the drive or OS X thinks there is.
You set up the bootcamp parittion, so run that and delete the Bootcamp partition as your not using it or Windows, once it's finished reboot and try installing Lion again.
I should warn you, Lion will not run your Rosetta based software or hardware drivers for external hardware, you may have to purchase all new versions. Not only that, hardware drivers may not be available for 10.7 thus rendering your third party printers, scanners etc useless.
Before you install Lion, you should consult this web page

Also you shoudl check your hardware and the makers site if there is a 10.7 compatible driver/software for them.
And once you think your ready to go to Lion, get a blank external powered drive and a free/donationware copy of Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your present (non-Filevault) 10.6 boot drive to the external drive.
Later if 10.7 doesn't work for you, simply hold the option key and boot off the 10.6 clone, use Disk Utility to Erase the entire drive (the whole drive!) and reverse clone 10.6 back onto the internal drive.

Miix 2 8, Can't make a recovery drive!!

Hi, Miix is less than a week old and I am trying to make a recovery drive, just in case.
I followed the instructions here

But the first thing is the "Copy the recovery partition to the drive..." is grayed out. No matter, I thought, so clicked "Next" only to be told, "Can't make a recovery drive as some of the files are missing."
I know the recovery partition is still there and working as just a few days back I had to do a full recovery. This thing crashes more than a crazy driver on crack.
I am getting nervous and wanted to make a security backup drive.
How can I do that?

Have you already tried formatting the recovery stick first?
I have also created recovery USB stick on my Satellite T230 that also doesnt have an optical drive and I used an 8GB Spaceloop USB stick and this worked properly. Before I did this I formatted the stick (no quick format, normal format) with default settings.
Furthermore it would be interesting to know if the USB devices work properly under Windows or do you have problems with USB devices too?

You will only know about the hard drive when you try to access it in TDM from your other computer. If you cannot boot into TDM mode or if the drive does not appear on the new computer's Desktop then it is likely bad.
What you are thinking about as a recovery disk is the Recovery HD normally created when you install Lion or later on the computer. You boot from it as follows:
Boot Using Command+R keys:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
"COMMAND" and the "R" keys together.
3. Release the keys when the Utilities Menu appears.

Connect the two computers using a FireWire cable. Use Target Disk Mode to clone the one drive to the other. Boot the iBook into TDM, then boot the PB normally. The iBook's drive should appear on the PB's Desktop. Use Disk Utility to erase the iBook's hard drive, then use Restore to clone the PB's drive to the iBook:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination
entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

Can not make a recovery disc for Toshiba Laptop

When I try to make a recovery disc for my Toshiba Satellite L305-S5919 I receive the following message:
An error occurred in the recording phase. Please check if the disc is scratched or dirty.
Error Code: 0E01B5-26-2A040301.
I have tried to do a recovery disc since buying the Computer in June 2009. The message always comes up at the same spot in the process. I am using DVD-R discs.

Can you burn to those disks using the regular Disk Writer Program? It doesn't matter what type as long as it's to that same batch of disks.
I would contact Toshiba as per this post and request that they provide you with a set of Recovery Disks since you can't make your own. They shouldn't charge you for them under the circumstances, but you might have to be forcefull about it.

I bought an IDE-USB Adapter and connected a DVD to the Netbook. But the device is not found even by the BIOS, too.
So I can not install the System. In addition there will be no BIOS update available for LINUX to detect DVD drives if this is the problem.

You use a normal 5 1/4 " DVD/CD drive,.it needs 12V dc did you powered the drive... ?
So the adapter is not recognized, thats bad ....the usb-ide adapter is defective....
The second question is...
Linux cant use any .exe files ...its not windows... thats normal...
so what will you install on it ?
Biosupdate ? is the only one .. i think.. but that is a problem for lenovo... i didnt see an biosupdater under linux
Why you buy those expensive ide-usb adapter ?
you can get a slimline cd usb drive is available for 25 $ (or 25€) on online shopper...
and you dont need a power adapter ...

Recovery Task for starting a stopped service not working (2012)

I created some monitors in SCOM 2012 to monitor some third-party services on one of our Windows 2008R2 SP1 servers (virtual). In the custom monitor, I created a "Start Service" Recovery Task using this guide:

But the Recovery Task is failing. I looked at the Health Explorer for the critical error notifiying me that the service stopped and it shows that the recovery task ran successfully but has the following error:

Error
The service name is invalid.

I have the Recovery Task configured as follows (bear in mind I'm testing this on a monitor that is only enabled for my test server, and i'm testing it with a non-critical service (Adobe Acrobat Update Service.))
If I connect to the server via RDP and use a command prompt to CD to C:\Windows\system32 and execute net.exe start AdobeARMservice, it starts fine.
What's up with this? I even tried sc.exe but that failed as well.

If so, it is the server side issue. Is there anything related to it in Event log?

The problem was resolved a small manipulation - on stage Basic Configuration,
point 3 "Configure CA Introscope"
I forgot to add to the list of CA Introscope Enterprise Managers link to my manager.
Thus it is necessary to take into account that the path should be correct (usually for linux - /usr/sap/ccms/apmintroscope) and the directory should be applied appropriate privileges.
Then in paragraph "Byte Code Adapter Installation" - there are all the necessary data, and it starts to work correctly

No. You can still make a bootable recovery DVD, but you will not be able to make a full bootable copy of ML without purchase.
1) Enable the debug menu for Disk Utility via Terminal Application. Navigate to terminal by typing "terminal" in spotlight. Copy the bolded text below and enter it into the command prompt:
defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled -bool true ; open -a "Disk Utility" ; exit
2) From the Debug Menu > Select Show every Partition > Recovery HD should appear
3) Right click (control + click) the Recovery HD partition and select "Mount"
4) Right click again the partition again > "Reveal Recovery HD in Finder". Leave this window open
5) At this point, you will need open terminal again and enter the following command:
sudo chflags nohidden /Volumes/Recovery\ HD/com.apple.recovery.boot/BaseSystem.dmg ; exit
Type your password when prompted.
6) Navigate back to the Recovery HD finder Window > com.apple.recovery.boot > BaseSystem.dmg
7) Drag "BaseSystem.dmg" into Disk Utility's sidebar.
8) Insert your DVD
9) Select "BaseSystem.dmg" in the sidebar and hit "Burn"
Once the burn is completed, hold option down at startup and select the DVD to boot. This is a bootable Recovery partition, not a bootable copy of ML.
Note: to disable the debug menu,
defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled -bool false
