Can I prevent domain spoofing?

I get approx. 300 rejection emails daily from spammers attempting to spoof my domain to various unknown recipients.
For example, the spammer will user an email address of [email protected] send it to non-exist [email protected] then the rejection mail comes back to me.
I've tested my server for open-relay and it does not send out open relays. SMTP outgoing requires login with CRAM-MD5.
Is there anyway I can prevent this from occuring, or do I just live with the mass rejections?

This is just part of life when running a mail server. Nothing you can do about.
Even if you implement SPF and/or DomainKeys, it will just (slightly) improve how other servers "see" your server, but backscatter from forged senders will still remain.

  • Can I prevent IP Spoofing attacks with wireless WRTGs router?

    I think i'm under attack.
I have a WRTGs linksys router, which routes port 80 traffice to an apache webserver running bugzilla.
Scanning through the apache logs see a bunch of errors resulting from un-allowed accesses to bugzilla.  The odd thing is that the source ip address logged in these errors are all internal addresses which have been statically assigned.
For instance, a typical error in the errorlog looks like:
[Wed Jan 31 04:17:05 2007] [error] [client 192.168.1.49] client denied by server configuration: C:/Bugzilla/
The above entry was from just this morning, and was part of a cluster of about 200 errors.  At the time the log entry was made, I know there was nobody on the machine.
So, I think someone must be trying to hack my bugzilla from the outside using IP Spoofing.
I did a bit of research, which indicates that this sort of thing can be prevented by configuring the firewall to discard any packets coming in from the WAN that have internal LAN source or destination addresses.
And so my question.  Can I configure the WRTGS router to do this?  I took a look through the admin screens, and did not see anything like "get rid of all the packets that look like this".
    thanks in advance
    dmc_lat47

You cannot modify the firewall rules with standard Linksys firmware. What you could do is install a third party firmware. Then you have direct access to Linux on the router and can configure firewall rules with iptables.
For 3rd party firmwares, which projects exists and on which hardware versions of the WRT54G they will work please read the wikipedia article on "wrt54".

    Hi Rino,

You can configure Domain Controllers group policy to allow only administrators
log on locally and log on through Terminal Services.
In addition, common domain users do not have the user rights to log onto Domain Controllers by default.

    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select Change Settings for Keychain "login". In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.

  • How Can I Prevent Emailed PDF (created in Acrobat)From Opening in Preview?

When I email my PDF page, if it is opened in another default viewer ('Preview', etc..) it opens up at the wrong size, (it is designed to open full screen and does not in 'Preview"), and the hot links do not work and are cold.  Is this due to people having older operating systems and/or old versions of applications? or something else?
Can I somehow treat the pdf on my end before I email it in order to ensure that the pdf is opened in Acrobat and reads and performs correctly?
I know I can include a note in the body copy of the email asking that it be opened in Acrobat, but I wish to 'take out the moving parts', so to speak, because one cannot always count on people to cooperate; (we all know how easy it is to just hit the  'Delete' button.).
Please someone tell me there is a way around this and a procedure that will ensure that a pdf open up as an acrobat document by default (help!).
    Thanks!

You really can't prevent it opening in Preview. There was a post recently (in the forms area I think) about writing some information to provide information in Preview as I recall. You should indicate in your e-mail that the PDF should be opened in Acrobat or Reader and that the use of Preview may create an unacceptable presentation.

  • Prior saved .pdf sometimes has blacked out content. How can I prevent this?

I use Mac OS 9 Maverick, read email in Mail.app and Yahoo.Mail, switch between Safari and Firefox for browsing (because Safari does not allow Flash videos to appear on pages).  When I want to save an email or an html file or report as .pdf, I use Command-P and select Save As PDF from the Print popup.  Normally, I can go back years later and read the .pdf document in the Home File I filed it in using Adobe Reader.  Sometimes, however, when I open a .pdf file--and I cannot tell prior to opening it--all of the content has been blacked out.  It is as if someone redacted the document after filing it, which I don't do.
How can I prevent these redactions?  The content being blacked out varies from extremely personal and important health files to simple email correspondence I want to save.  Sometimes I have paid for a document and have to contact the publisher to send hard copy via USPS due to this problem.
What am I missing here?  Do I need a specific plug-in?  Is there a way to retrieve the blacked-out content from my computer stored file?

  • Windows machines can't join domain after 10.5.4 upgrade

    Howdy folks,
I have a ticket open with Apple on this but am posting here in hopes that someone might have an idea for me.
I upgraded our Mac OS X Server 10.5.3 to 10.5.4 on Sunday, and this morning several users reported that their PCs running Windows XP SP2 were unable to login to the Windows domain hosted on this machine. It's the primary domain controller for the Windows users.
One thing to note is that I had to reinstall the server completely because the 10.5.4 patcher crashed, creating all kinds of mayhem. I did a fresh install of OS X Server 10.5 and immediately applied the 10.5.4 combo updater to it. I had to restore the Open Directory from an archival copy, and the SMB was created fresh. Not sure why but the SMB services weren't preserved by the Server settings export command in Server Admin.
I thought unbinding the PC from the Windows domain and then rebinding it with a new name would help, but I've been completely unable to add older computers to the domain, even after removing the old computer records first.
I've got a reproducible failure mode for this problem on a Windows XP virtual machine running on VMware Fusion on my Mac. Here's the method I've been using to create the failure:
    1. Change Windows XP System name to something new that doesn't already have a computer record on the Mac OS X Server and reboot.
    2. After the reboot, run "NewSID" program on Windows to globally change my Windows machine's SID to a new, random value, and reboot again.
    3. Attempt to use the Network ID wizard in the Windows Control Panel to re-add the machine to the domain under a new name so there's no conflict with any old computer records floating around in Open Directory. After it prompts me to enter the username, password and domain name for a user who's authorized to add machines to the domain, I get a dialog box that displays this error:
"Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error has occurred:
    An internal error occurred."
    Not too informative.
Here are the error messages I see in /var/log/samba/log.smbd (searching for the new computer name in the search field):
    netbios connect: name1=BIGMAC name2=JEFFVM6
    netbios connect: local=bigmac remote=jeffvm6, name type = 0
opendirectorysamsearchname gave -14136 [eDSRecordNotFound]: no dsRecTypeStandard:Computers record for account 'JEFFVM6$'
    odssam_getgrnam gave -14136 [eDSRecordNotFound]: no dsRecTypeStandard:Groups record for 'JEFFVM6$'!
opendirectorysamsearchname gave -14136 [eDSRecordNotFound]: no dsRecTypeStandard:Computers record for account 'JEFFVM6$'
kDSStdAuthNewUser was successful for account "jeffvm6$"
At that point it's impossible to join the computer to the domain no matter what. The most puzzling thing is that SOME of our users were able to login without any problems whatever. The ones that were either physically off or somewhere else when the 10.5.4 upgrade was applied are the only PCs that seem to be having problems.
Any help at all is appreciated. I suspect this is some kind of a SID conflict because the SMB server had to be recreated from scratch, but have no idea how to fix the client, the server, or both to make the computer account creation process work.

    The problem is fixed.
The issue boils down to an argument between the Open Directory server on bigmac (the OS X Server machine) and the SMB server on bigmac. The crucial information I needed to solve this problem was located here: http://www.radiotope.com/node/61
The Open Directory database had to be restored from a backup following this weekend's problematic upgrade, and it had a different value for the SID for the Windows domain than the one used by the SMB server software itself. Even stranger was that the Open Directory database actually had the wrong domain name! The It was listed as "BIGMAC" in Open Directory, even though it was set to the correct Windows domain name in the SMB server.
The solution was to demote the SMB server from a Primary Domain Controller to a Standalone Machine, and then repromote it. Although I changed no values in the settings, and did not modify the plist containing the SID in the Open Directory via the Inspector in Workgroup Admin, after the SMB PDC was repromoted, the SIDs and the domain names in Open Directory and the SMB config agreed with each othe. Now new machines can join the domain and users can login just as they did before. No client-side modifications are necessary.
Hope this is helpful to someone else. It was quite the hair-pulling experience for a while there.

  • How can I prevent Bridge from altering my photos?

    HELP!!!
Within the past few days my Bridge CS4 program has been making my life miserable. I had been utilizing the program to batch photos from my extensive photo library, rename them, sort them (i.e., change sort/ordinal number), and the like without any difficulty and then suddenly, after executing such processes my thumbnails turned completely white and would not open in Bridge, Photoshop CS4 Extended - much less anything else. I tried reopening them as .jpg's, .psd's, .tiff's to no avail. I went into properties on each photo and checked the "open with" tab, and it noted that the photo was not recognized. I had some moderate success opening them with Quicktime Picture Viewer, but converting them back to a Bridge readable format (i.e., their original state) proved impossible. Having noticed that Quicktime had hijacked nearly my entire photo opening process, I uninstalled it in the hope that it would solve the problem. It didn't. I then went into Bridge and Photoshop CS4 preferences to try and modify how photos were opened, and couldn't seem to find anything applicable. I did, however, increase the memory and cache allocated to each program substantially.
Last night I ran into more problems with Bridge. While scanning both photo negatives and prints into Bridge and saving them into various files, I encountered the same problem indicated in paragraph one. I tried scanning several of them a second time and succeeded; however, I had to save them to a different file and give them dissimilar names in .tiff format. In the process I found more than a dozen ways to spell "Mexico," "Tokyo," and "Ukraine"! They would not save as .jpg's or .psd's.
I use Windows Vista Home Premium SP1, have a Pentium 4 Dual Core (2.8) processor, 4 GB Memory, Nvidia GE Force 7600 video card (yes, the drivers are up to date), and Hewlett Packard Photosmart C7180 and C7280 printers for scanning. All of the photos involved are stored on a Maxtor One Touch 1TB Turbo auxillary hard drive.
Also, could anyone suggest how I can get the  SD/MMC card reader on my PC to work?
Thanks to any and all for assisting me with my problem.

Thank you curt y for your quick response. I have seen your recommendations on the adobe forums link in the past and many of your solutions
seem to have helped other people with Bridge problems. I took your suggestion and gave it a whirl - all preferences were restored to defaults - and the problem continues. I get the feeling the problems lies with the program's interaction with Windows.
Having tried a few more things, I've found that I can move the photo shell (the inscription underneath the thumbnail states, "Window Shell Common") to my desktop and open it there with Photoshop (i.e., going through the song and dance of "open with" and clicking on the CS4 icon, where it opens up in RAW). I must then move it over to Photoshop CS4 and save it as a .jpg or a .psd. Unfortunately, after all this it still won't open in Bridge. By all appearances, Bridge somehow has become corrupted and I'm probably going to have to do a complete Photoshop CS4 uninstall and reinstall.
I've spent hundreds - if not thousands - of hours scanning into my system some 10,000 photographs of my travels (yes, they are backed up on discs), and Bridge should not be negatively impacting my ability to organize and manipulation them as is happening now. If the uninstall/reinstall does not resolve the problem, I'll be back on this forum for more suggestions.
As for the card reader issue, I'm well aware of the 2GB/over 2GB issue. I typically use a 4GB or more card in my camera. I can download fine through my HP 7180 and 7280 card readers, but my HP 1518n card reader is a different story. I'll work a little more on it, too.
    Thanks again.

Have you tried resetting your preferences by holding down the Ctrl key and starting Bridge?  You will get a reset window, choose all 3 options.
The only thing I know about card readers is that there are 2 versions.  One for cards of 2 gigs or less, and one for HD cards over 2 gigs.  Make sure card and reader match.

  • How can I prevent the settings on iMessage from changing each time I sync the devices with iTunes on our iMac?

Each time I sync an apple device (iPad, iPad mini, iPhone) with iTunes on our iMac the settings on iMessage and phone settings change. We use the same Apple ID and have different e-mail addresses and phone numbers; however, each time a device is sync'd on iTunes on our iMac, the iMessage settings and phone settings are changed so that we all each get each other's text messages and phone calls. After the device is sync'd/charged, I have to go into each device (all of them somehow update when only one is sync'ing) and re-set the settings to what we want. How can I prevent settings from being changed each time?

Okay I've tried safe mode.  Let it run down to 98%, plugged it in, locked the screen, and waited.  A few minutes later, the screen came on showing the 100% icon at the top right, full battery icon just to the left of the time, 100% text to the left of that.
I'm not going to do a hard reset until I have confirmation that this is not normal behavior for the phone because that's going to take hours of my time and gigabytes of data transfer to get all of my media and apps back on the phone and configured.
After all my griping, I do have to give credit where it's due.  This phone is much more efficient than my Galaxy Nexus.  I left the S5 running in WiFi hotspot mode while on battery last night.  It still had over 50% left on the battery.  The Galaxy Nexus would be stone dead after about 4 hours.  I can live with that if I have to but I'd really rather be able to leave it on the charger at night.

If your device is discoverable, the other BT device would try (I am not sure if that would be successful). If it was, it would appear in your system preferences>Bluetooth.

This is from another Apple article:
    Use Bluetooth
You can wirelessly transfer files between computers—even Mac to PC—using the Bluetooth File Exchange utility. You can even browse selected devices and retrieve files remotely. For extra security, you can stipulate that only trusted devices be allowed to connect to your Mac, and 128-bit over-the-air encryption is also available

  • If I have multiple email accounts, how can I prevent one of them from sending email?

If set up multiple email accounts in Thunderbird, how can I prevent one of them from sending email, while allowing others to send?

    Simple answer:
do not use the email address when sending or replying or forwarding emails. Sending is not automatic, you have to generate the email and click on a Send button.
You could use an smtp server that will not allow sending using the incorrect server for the email address, so that it cannot send, but if you accidentally use the email address you may get an error message, but at least the email will not be sent. Do this here:
Tools > Account Settings for the mail account.
bottom right Outgoing Server - select one that will not accept sending using wrong email address
    OR
in Outgoing Server(SMTP) select the server you are using for that account
    click on 'Edit'
deliberately make an error in the server name - remove the port details etc.
So the details are wrong and cannot send.

  • I have an iPhone that was set up as a backup of another phone. I want to sync it with my current library; am afraid of losing synced contacts. Will I? Can I prevent this?

The older phone in question was a work phone that was set up by the owner and then distributed to employees for use. I have a new phone that will be for personal use that I have backed up from the work phone;mainly for the contacts. I want to sync the new phone with my personal library, and I go to do so and get the infamous "erase and sync" message. Will this erase they synced contacts if I do this? (Contacts are what are most important in this case; there is no music stored, for the backup had no music.) If it does, can I prevent this from happening without having to manually replace the contacts?

You did not restore the new iPhone.
The first time a new iPhone is connected to iTunes on a computer that is used to sync with another iPhone or iOS device or that was used to backup another iPhone or iOS devide, you are prompted to transfer the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device, or set up the new iPhone as a new iPhone.
Since the old iPhone was synced with iTunes on a different computer, all iTunes content on the new iPhone (which is none at the present time) will be erased first.
The warning message should indicate all iTunes content will be erased from the iPhone, which is iTunes content only.
If you are syncing contacts with a supported address book app on this computer and the supported address book app on this computer includes any contacts, you will be provided a merge prompt for the contacts, which you want to select. Otherwise the contacts on the iPhone will be replaced with the contacts in the address book app on the computer with the first sync.
