Can I 'UnArchive' Footage ?

Hi,
After archiving an iDVD project which contained several individual iMovies to my back up hard disk I deleted all of the individual files on my internal HD to free some space.
Query: Is it possible to extract an individual iMovie file from the archived project for future editing revealing all of the transitions, audio tracks, etc back in iMovie ?
I have used 'show package contents' and can see the individual movies as Quick Time files but when I load these into iMovie all I get is the whole movie as one single clip.
I suspect the answer is once it's archived I cannot retrieve the iMovie files ?
Any help appreciated. Many thanks.

I haven't looked inside one of those iDVD archives for a long time, but it should contain two kinds of movies.
1. A small reference movie that iDVD used to make the DVD. This movie contains no audio or video of its own, just pointers to other files in the archive.
If you have QuickTime Pro, you can open that movie in QT Player and grab any chunks you want, a Copy them to a new movie.
2. The other source files. These are stored in the Media folder of an iMovie project. If there's a Media folder inside the archive, it should contain all the individual files used by the iDVD/iMovie projects.
These files are not necessarily the same as the CLIPS in the iMovie project, however, for one Media file can support one clip, several clips or many clips. In other words, importing a Media file to a new iMovie project may deliver more than you want, but what you want will be in there somewhere.

  • Can't view footage

We captured some test footage in HD 1080 @ 24p/sf at 8bit YUV. We can hear the audio in CS3, but can't see the video in the Source Monitor. We can view our footage in the Quicktime player, just not in our editor.
Our video card is the ATI Radeon X800 SE. Not sure if that is the problem.
Any thoughts on how to figure out what our problem is?

Beyond my skill set. I suggest dropping by the Creative Cow's XENA forum. Even when I get my AJA Xena LHe installed, I will be using Prospect HD and not the AJA drivers.

  • Can iMovie import footage from new Canon 5D Mark11

    Hi all,
I've just purchased a Canon 5D mark11 and being just a still photographer I know very little about movie footage and how to handle it. Does anyone know if iMovie 08 can import movie footage from this new camera?
    Regards,
    Scott

I was also wondering whether iMovie might be usable for editing the footage off the Canon 5D mark11.
iMovie '08 may be able to edit the footage natively (i.e., again assuming the profiles are QT compatible). iMovie HD, on the other hand, will have to convert the files to your designated project type as part of the import process. In either case, I assume the files will automatically be stored in/be managed by iPhoto and be directly available to either application.
That depends on what you want to do in your edits. GarageBand (if you have or purchase iLife) will allow you to perform conversions, limited filters, and/or scale content as part of the re-compression process. MPEG Streamclip (free) offers most of the more advanced editing features (trimming; merging; converting; scaling; changing frame rates; adjusting brightness, contrast, saturation, and/or volume; etc.) of QT Pro (without spending the $30) but does not give you the audio/video layering, track level video scaling, masking, setting of poster frames, extractions/deletions at the track level, the adding of logos and/or watermarks, and other advanced features of QT Pro or Final Cut. My personal choice is to use both MPEG Streamclip, QT Pro and iMovie/Final Cut for their complementary capabilities. Again, what you need depends on what you need/want to do with your files.

  • Can't match footage with (custom) Preset in CS3

I've captured footage from my Hi8 Sony Camera using Honestech VHS to DVD device.
Setting were to capture in SVCD. I chose this to optimize file size and this should accommodate the 420 lines from the Hi8.
Next I create a new project but no Presets are offered to match this format.
If I import the footage with having chosen any preset then in the project panel the imported footage shows as the following:
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 664.8 MB
    Image Size: 480 x 576
    Pixel Depth: 480
    Frame Rate: 25.00
Source Audio Format: 44100 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Total Duration: 00:33:22:24
Average Data Rate: 339 KB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.6
There is no preset for this and if I choose Desktop ion Custom Setting and enter the 480 x 576 there is no choice for the 1.6 PAR. The result is the video is truncated in the horizontal.
The alternative seem to be to capture in DVD format giving the following result:
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 4.1 GB
    Image Size: 720 x 576
    Pixel Depth: 720
    Frame Rate: 25.00
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Total Duration: 01:09:02:08
Average Data Rate: 1.0 MB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.066
However this gives a much larger and unneccesary file size.
    Can anyone help out here?

I do not think you will get a settings that will match SVCD its rather obselete.
You have to capture in DVD mpeg 720x576, this is quite common.
You will have to get a larger disk if you cannot store this file.
4 gig is not large these days.

  • Can I edit footage recorded in 1080p24 with 5.1ch surround audio using Premiere Elements 12? I'm only seeing stereo audio...

    Hi all,
Quick one - I've recorded footage using a Sony HDR-PJ810 in 1080p24 with 5.1ch surround audio (currently experimenting with different frame rates, resolutions and audio).  If I import this into a 1080p24 preset in Premiere Elements 12 then I see only stereo audio with no obvious way to add a 5.1 channel.
If I import this into a 5.1ch surround preset (like 1080i 30 5.1) then I can see the audio across 6 channels but it's obviously having to unevenly spread 24 frames across 30 spaces in order to match the frame rates (skipping some of the slots which I suspect will cause playback artifacts).
Is there any way to get a 5.1ch surround audio track within a 1080p24 project? (I don't see it as a preset). Thanks!

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on?
The answer is to create a 1080p24 5.1 Channel project preset.
Please see my work on the approach to doing this and related information. If necessary, I will write instructions specific to 1080p24 5.1 channel

Are you in a NTSC or PAL area? Reason for that question will be mentioned later.

  • Can I edit footage, using the DV files that are saved over a network?

What I mean is, I have saved my MiniDV DV footage to a external hard drive which I connect to over ethernet, its not a NAS, its a HDD in a PC I have.
I have my iMac (intel 2GHz), can I use iMovie 08 to import, edit and save to the HDD over the network?
Its just the files are big (ie 13Gb per hour), so I save them on my external HDD, rather than my iMac
Will it cause any problems? or anything?
    cheers

Ethernet is generally slower than FireWire.
You could import the files into your iMac and edit them there, then save all the edited material back onto the external hard disc. But Ethernet isn't generally fast enough for real-time editing (..across the network..) onto the external disc. So you'd (1) move the files to the internal, (2) edit them there, (3) export or Save the edited project back again to the external disc.
Note than a disc formatted for use on a PC will probably be identified by your Mac's 'Finder' as a "PC Exchange format" disc ..the file system used on the disc would probably be the DOS 'FAT 32' system.
Although Macs can read and write to this format, some of the iMovie-specific "metadata" may not be saved onto a FAT 32 disc; iMovie prefers to work with a Mac-formatted "Mac OS Extended" format ..but PCs generally can't read or write to that!
So what you may need to do is to bring in all your material onto the iMac for editing, and then 'Share' or Export the resultant movie(s) as QuickTime movies (..instead of as original 13GB-per-hour DV files..) if you want to be able to play the results on that PC itself.
But I'd avoid using an external hard disc which is actually in a PC; the format (file system) - although
it'll work with a Mac - is all wrong for iMovie.
Invest in a proper, separate external FireWire hard disc - they're cheap now: Amazon's selling 1000 gigabyte discs for £89 ..that's about $140..! - and immediately format it (..using Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility..) as 'Mac OS Extended', and then use it exclusively with your iMac.
You'll be far happier that way..

  • Can't preview footage on my deck

I'm still on FCE 2 (planning to do a major system upgrade later this year), and ran into capture problems, like everyone else, when I upgraded to OS 10.4.9. After reading on this board about the problem and solution (upgrade FCE or revert to an older OS) I remembered I had created a back-up of OS 10.4.7 on an external hard drive. Lucky me. I re-started in that OS and was able to capture successfully.
Now the problem. I can't preview my footage through my deck any longer. Yesterday right after capturing several clips I dropped some on the time line and wanted to preview through my deck on TV. The deck would not recognize anything coming from FCE. This is the same exact setup that I just used to capture -- OS 10.4.7 with QT 7.1.2.
I switched over to OS 10.4.9 with QT 7.1.5 installed and was also not able to see any image on my deck.
    Any suggestions?

OK, the problem is back...I guess I was to early in calling this one solved. As I stated the weird thing is that I can capture without any problems now but as soon as I close the capture window and try editing I lose the image on my deck.
    Any suggestions?

  • Can I download footage onto iMovie using a USB stick?

    Hi there,
Very quick question. Can I download my footage, which is saved on a 16gb USB stick, directly to iMovie? If not then is there a way I can get round this?
I don't have a camcorder as the footage was shot on my Super 8 camera and then transferred professionally.
    Many thanks! x

It depends. Mainly on what codec the service used.
Im iMovie, try FILE/IMPORT MOVIES and navigate to the external USB stick, select a file and import it.
If it does not work, see if you can open the file in QuickTime Player, then click WINDOW/INSPECTOR and tell us what is listed next to the word "Format"

  • Can I rotate footage?!

I know this is stupid, but before I buy final cut 3.5, I wanted to confirm that it can rotate the video footage 180 deg. I use a micro35 lens adapter, which records upside down. When I bought my imac, I was fustrated to find imovie dosen't have this simple option! But if I wanted to add fairy dust...well I can do that!!
    Trevor

You can do it either way: with Rotate as I wrote above, or with Flop=Both. The visual result is the same.
Well. There is a slight difference (at least on my Mac): with Rotate I get the bright green render bar (preview only), with Flop I get the dark green render bar (full). I guess then that Flop is probably better since it loads the CPU less than Rotate (but at the end you'd better render anyway, before exporting or printing to video)

  • How can I use footage from one project in another?

The best format for saving your video from one project so that it can be used in another Premiere Elements project is DV-AVI. For hi-def video, the format is HDV.
To save your video as a standard-definition DV-AVI, go to Share, Personal Computer and select the AVI output option with the DV preset. When you're ready to mix together these segments open a new project using the DV settings and assemble them on that timeline.
To save your video as a high-definition M2T video, go to Share,  Personal Computer and select the MPEG output option with the 1440x1080 MPEG preset. When you're ready  to mix together these segments open a new project using the HDV settings  and assemble them on that timeline.

  • Can't drag footage onto timeline or move footage around that is already on timeline

I have a project that I have been working with for awhile in Premiere Pro CS5 and I am trying to add more footage to the timeline. I am able to view the footage in the viewer but when I try and drag the selected clip down to the time line it prohibits me. PP gives me no alert saying that I am not able to and it also prohibits me from being able to move anything around that is already on the time line.
Any idea why this would be?

Did you target the track where you to want to drop the clip and is that track unlocked?

  • How can I distort footage in AME?

I have PAL footage @ 720x576px with a 16:9 flag for aspect ratio. I want to encode this to a H264 file at 720x576px square pixel, discarding the aspect ration. Currently AME is scaling (letterboxing) my footage into 720x576 preserving the aspect ratio.
I've probably missed something. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

If I understand correctly, you want your 16:9 source footage resized into a 4:3 frame without cropping any pixels (i.e. by distorting the image).  If so, there are two ways to do this:
    A) Use the Interpret Footage dialog (File > Interpret Footage) to change the aspect ratio of your source to Square Pixels.
    ...or
    B) If you have AMC CS6, set  Source Scaling  in the Export Settings dialog to Stretch to Fill.  This will automatically resize the source to fit the frame size of your output, distorting the frame as necessary.

  • How can I use footage shot with a phone app?

  • Suddenly can't import footage, and already done projects give me a media offline message importer is missing. Help... anyone?

I cannot import footage of any kind anymore in premiere pro cc, and all finished projects give me a offline media message'importer is missing'. Anyone with the same problem?
I am currently working on a PC, windows 7professional. GPU GTX 760. Quicktime is player up to date.
    Thanks in advance

i have a solution for import and read any files
its a problem with the 8.2 and last version of premiere and setting on the cloud
in premiere you desactivate on the preference the synchronisation with adobe cloud (all)
and after you go on you os c/ user/ appdata / adobe / premiere / roaming  / 8.0 you cancel all the file and after you restart adobe
for me is ok - but for the moment i don't have the possibility to export in h264 ?

  • Can't upload footage from camera?

m on Final Cut Pro X. I'm trying to upload footage from my camera's memory card and the application won't let me scroll down to see my un-imported clips. It's frozen. It will let me move the window around and click on other tabs but it wont let scroll or even close the window. The red x button to close the window doesn't even work. I've force quit my entire computer because Final Cut wouldn't quit. It was extremely nerve racking to do. And now I don't know what to do because it is continuing to be frozen.

Your computer is frozen or Final Cut is frozen?
