Can imacs be left on all the time

I was told that I should be leaving my imac on at all times, i wanted to check this out before doing so?

The "Everything Mac" booklet that came with my iMac says on page 15 as follows:  "If you will be away from your iMac for less than a few days, put it to sleep".  That is the practice I follow.  The only exception I make is when the weather appears to be such that we'll have a power failure.  Then I shut my iMac down to do it in an orderly fashion.  In addition in "Systems Preferences > "Energy Saver", I have unchecked the box labeled "Start up automatically after a power failure" because I don't want to run the risk of a start up and shut down if the power is going on and off.
If your iMac came with a similar booklet, check it out for all sorts of tips on using, troubleshooting, etc.

  • Should the TC be left on all the time?

Ok - this may be a daft question - but should the TC be left on all the time or is it ok to switch it off at the mains each time I shut down my iMac?

I've tried leaving my TC on all the time but it seems to be constantly active (the green light flickers) even when there are no computers attached to it. I happened to come downstairs this morning at around 3am and the TC was still humnming away to itself seemingly unaware that nothing was connected to it! I unplugged it. In addition to getting rid of the annoying noise it will save some electricity!!

  • Imac shuts down, randomly, all the time

So my imac shuts down randomly all the time, after it turns itself off, u need to unplug it for ages, then it will restart (way longer than it should to reset smc). Even in target mode,
Even stranger is it logs a console message stating, system must shutdown now, shutting down....
I thought it must certainly be hardware issue but what? I have checked all temps, reset firmware, etc etc.....
The logic board has been replaced, so it can only be the psu?? any ideas?

    I've experiencing the same problem.
If there is a power failure (or the power line gets disconect) I have to unplug everything from the back of the computer and wait for hours till I can turn it back on.
Recently it started to turn itself off..... and then I have to wait for several hours till I can get it to work again..... any tips on how to solve this?

  • Can I leave Powerbook on all the time and music pauses when disc ejects.

I have had an imac at home for the last 4 years and always left it asleep when not using it so I could acces my itunes quickly. I have just upgraded to a Pbook G4 17" and am concerned now that I may not be able to leave it on. I read Apples guide to battery use and they say not to leave it plugged in all the time. I thought this was a machine that could be used all the time? Am i safe to leave it plugged in asleep through the day and night with say 3 to 4 hours use in the evening?
Also, when listening to itunes and i eject a disc the music pauses for a moment. I use a G5 at work and my old imac never did this. Someone I work with has the same Pbook but 15" and hers doesnt pause.
Can any one help with these 2 issues? Love my Pbook but these couple of things are taking the shine off it. Thanks for an informative forum.

It is OK to leave your PowerBook on (plugged in) but remember to use your battery once in a while. Lithium-based batteries have to be used. Fully discharging and recharging the battery every two weeks should be OK.
An alternative is removing your battery with a 50% charge. Apple suggests this if you don’t plan on using your battery for more than six months.

  • Should TouchPad be left on all the time? Battery life?

Hello, sorry if this question has been asked before but I have searched this forum (before asking this question) and could not find an answer. Is it recommended to leave your TouchPad on all the time (which I have been doing) or should it be turned off like I do with my PC every night?
Also, what is the typical battery life of the TouchPad and once the battery fails can we replace the battery or is that the end of life for our TouchPad too?
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide me in answering my questions.
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

There is no harm leaving the device "on", but I'm assuming you mean letting the screen go blank when not being used.
Since the device is still relatively new, I'm not sure how long the battery will last.  I still have Palm PDA's that work like new after 7 years.  I treat them like a pet - feed them each night, and use a cover to keep them safe.
The batteries in the old devices weren't user-servicable, but many users and websites were able to change them out.

  • Should DSL modem be left on all the time?

For the last week, I have been having serious intermittant DSL connectivity problems. Nothing has changed in my house, we do not have wireless, no other comm devices, etc. I have opened a trouble ticket with Verizon.com because of static on the phone lines - perhaps that is the problem.
However this morning, I called the DSL tech support line (800-567-6789) and described the problem. That individual told me the following:
-- I should leave DSL modem (Westell 6100G) on all the time in order for the modem to maintain sync with the central office.
          ==> IS THIS CORRECT?
If this is correct, would someone please explain the technical reason for this?
-- The tech support person is sending new DSL filters just in case. When I tried to use the automated Verizon phone system, the system keep thinking I was inputting wrong answers to questions. I turned off the modem and this problem disappeared. Wierd!!!
-- The tech support person is conducting a 24 hour test to see if line problems are discovered.
    Thoughts anyone?

DSL is very sensitive to noise quality issues, and if you are getting static, I would wager that they are directly connected.  If it's the splitters that are the problem (and yes that is possible) then removing them and your phones from the picture would yield a positive result.  but that would mean you would have to leave the phones and filters unplugged for x amount of time and depending on the frequency of the drops, that may be unrealistic.
Phones and filters go bad, so it's possible to have had a working set of phones and filters, and never touched them and yet still have a problem in the future.
The DSL modem should be connected at all times, as that is what DSL was designed to be.  an always on connection.
In a perfect world I would say that you can disconnect and connect it at your leisure, but with all the little things that make DSL hiccup, its best to leave it plugged in 24/7.  you can unplug it, it won't hurt it, and it will save you a little bit of energy, but it won't do much for your performance other than extend the life of your router.
and do not believe that they are running any legitimate proactive 24 hour test - they MIGHT grab some stats off the modem that show stuff, but a lot of it is information that a normal tech would not be able to decipher.
My advise, either disconnect the phones and test that way like I described above, or wait for the filters.
leaving the modem plugged in is a personal decision, I personally would leave it plugged in 24/7 unless I was not protected properly on my PC and worried about attacks/virus's

  • Why can't I get online all the time with my iPad?

Sometimes when I open my iPad2, I click on an app that needs to be online to be accessed, and nothing happens. I have to turn off, then on again my WiFi. Why am I not able to access the internet all the time. WiFi at home works fine with my MacBook Air all the time.

No firewall. My office is in my home. The iPad is on my desk right next to he Netgear router. Router is only 6 months old.
Sometimes I can open iPad and get online right away. Other times my apps won't update, and I have to turn wifi off, then on again. This is a ROYAL pain! My Air works great as does everyone else's  laptop who visits me.
I am a hug Apple fan, so this is stumping me.

  • ITunes + iMac G5 + Leopard = hangs all the time

I've a iMac G5 with 1,5GB RAM running since 2 years fine with Tiger.

  • Airport Extreme loses USB printer unless printer left on all the time

Running the 802.11n Extreme with firmware 7.1.1 and Airport Utility 5.2.1 (released 13 August 2007) with an Epson RX650 connected directly to the Extreme's USB port.
It appears that the USB port on the Extreme only checks the status of a connected USB printer when the Extreme itself is restarted - if you ever turn your USB printer off (for example, at bedtime) and on again(e.g. the next morning) the Extreme does not re-check the USB port status.
A bit odd, since the intention of USB is to be hot-pluggable...
Any solutions better than restarting the Extreme every time you turn your printer on?

I have this exact same issue,
Airport Extreme just looses my printer all of the time, and leaves Tiger and Leopard in the 'Connecting.' or 'Opening Printer Connection..' stages 40% of the time.
It's an extremely annoying bug, and you have to turn off / un-plug things in the exact order otherwise it just wont:
    a) recognise the printer over it's own USB port or
    b) Finder will never be able to connect to it, even when it can blatantly see it.
My Printer is an Epson R1800

  • Does theAirPort Time Capsule have to be left on all the time

Do I have to leave the NEW UPRIGHT  Time Capsule on and connected to the power all the time

There are two different schools of thought as far as the Time Capsule (and other Apple routers as well)
If Apple had wanted you to turn off the Time Capsule on a regular basis, they would have included an "Off" switch on the device, or a means to turn off the Time Capsule from your computer.
Clearly, Apple designed the Time Capsule is designed to be left on most of the time.
There is  less stress placed on an electronic device when it is left on, as opposed to turning it off and on constantly.
Yet, it is true that turning the Time Capsule off will save a bit of energy.
Knowing that just about any decision involves trade offs, you will have to decide which school that you want to join.

  • Airport Express and iMac connection cuts out all the time

I have an Airport Express set to 802.11n with b and g compatibility. It is connected to a DSL modem with a static IP address via an Ethernet cable. I use a MacBook Air in the same room as the AE. In another room, I have a 24" iMac (Intel). The iMac is always connected to the AE network as is the MBA. Everytime I make a connection to the iMac (via Screen Sharing or other), the connection cuts out after awhile. There is no interference with the iMac connection, the AE is using a channel no one else around me is using, it just suddenly stops receiving any packets from the AE. I have to open Safari, wait for a website not to load, click on the Network Diagnostic button, go through the reconnection process to the AE network and then it comes back and tells me all is OK. The energy saver is set so the computer never falls to sleep and it is not related to the screen saver coming on.
It just stops sending data to the iMac. All firmware and software are up to date. I have the same problem when using Back to My Mac outside the home. Sometimes I can connect and sometimes I can't.
    Can anyone help?

Hi, Thanks for the suggestions. Here are the answers to your questions:
Channel selection is on Automatic. I have tried switching channels on both my DSL router (and it doesn't go to the channel I select!) and on the AE. Performance is the same.
iMac still drops connection even if MBA is not logged onto the network.
Screen Sharing's performance is poor, even if iMac is receiving other internet data (Safari or iTunes downloads)
MBA always has a good connection
Each machine is using 10.5.5. This problem exists only in the last couple of months when my DSL provider (all Linux) changed some of their configurations.
I will try to do the terminal exercise today. So far this am and last night, no dropped connections. Go figure!
