Can my computer handle editing DVCPRO 1080?

Hi. Im currently editing a feature length film. In the editing room, im currently set up with a Mac Pro running 2 2.66 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors, with 2gb or ram, and a Aja Kona Card ran to an HD monitor.
I'd like to take my work home with me. I have 3TBs of footage spread across two external 5 bay enclosures. My set up at home is out of date. I have a 1.5 ghz Powerbook G4, and a Dual 1 ghz G4 tower.
I looked into getting a sata card for my powerbook, but im pretty sure it can't handle it. Is there anything i can do, or should just not take the work home?
Thanks guys for any input.

there is 2gigs of ram in my powerbook G4. there is also 2 gigs of ram in my Dual 1ghz G4 PowerPC.

  • Can my computer handle FCE 4?

I got my powerbook in '03 to edit videos and its worked just fine for what I've needed. I recently updated my system to 10.4.11 and have a 320 GB external HD to handle all the footage I need. But I'm getting to that point where I'd LOVE to dive into FCE but don't know if my computer can handle it. Can someone advise? (see specs below) I'm worried since one of the FCE 4 requirements included 1.25 GHz. If my computer can't handle the software, what upgrades could I make or is my machine just getting too old to keep up?

It doesn't sound like your Mac will handle it. FCE 3.0 or 3.5 should. I recommend FCE 3.5. You should be able to find it for sale on eBay and elsewhere.

  • How much RAM can my computer handle?

I have a iMac that was manufactured mid 2011 21.5 inch display.  The specs say it can only handle 16GB of RAM but here's the response I got from the RAM manufacturer:
"Whist your official manufacturer specification recommends 16GB maximum capacity, we can confirm that your iMac can support up to 32GB because this has been rigorously tested in this system and is guaranteed compatible.
But I can set up a refund for you, if you would still like to purchase other memory modules."
    Here is my response:
"Can you guarantee in writing that 32GB of RAM will work for my machine and not hurt it? If it breaks because of too much RAM do you replace the computer?"
Please advise 16GB or 32GB.  By the way, I gave the manufacturer the serial number of my iMac so they shouldn't gotten this wrong.

Get your hands on the ever-useful app, Mactracker. It lists all the specs for one's Mac including the latest capacity for RAM.
You can get it here or at the Mac App store (and iOS store)

  • Can my computer handle OS X 8?

    Hi,
I recently discovered that I need to upgrade  Aperture to support images for a new camera I bought.  That also requires an upgrade in the OS.  I currently run 10.6.8.
My system is iMac 27", Intel Core Duo, 3.06hz, currently with 12GB of ram (of a possible 16).
I'd like to stay current, and also keen to set up iCloud, but I'm a little worried about  the capability of my system to handle osx 8.
Can anyone let me know if OSX 8 will perform ok on my system, or if there are any issues I should be aware of?
    Many thanks,
    Richard

As you have a 27-inch iMac with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, you have a Late 2009 iMac. OS X Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) requires a Mid 2007 or newer iMac, so you can run OS X Mountain Lion without any problem.
First, make a backup of your data with Time Machine and/or Carbon Copy Cloner. Then, open App Store and purchase OS X Mountain Lion, so it will start being downloaded. When the download finishes, the OS X Mountain Lion will show up, so follow the steps to upgrade. Depending of the computer, this may take up to 40 minutes or more.
Check if your applications are supported > http://www.roaringapps.com To set up iCloud after upgrading to Mountain Lion, open System Preferences > iCloud, and follow its steps

  • Can my computer handle it?

    Hi,
right now my computer seems on the line between wether or not i can run Premiere pro. Im on a 1.6 Ghz core 2 duo with 4Gb of ram on windows XP. Think i could run Premiere pro?

and how patient you are. Whatever you try to edit, it will be extremely slow. I have a notebook with a 2.66 Core2 Duo and 4 GB and it is way too slow for editing. Around 7-10 times slower than my regular system. Your system is more likely around 15 times slower and I would go mad just thinking about such a snail.

  • Can my computer handle HD?

    Hello everyone!
I have FCP 5.1 installed on my PowerMac and I was just curious if people think it can handle HD.
I will be capturing HD 1080i footage with a Sony FX1
    I have a PowerMac G4 dual 1.25Ghz
    1.75GB DDR SDRAM
    500/320GB FW800 external drives
    3 7200RPM 160GB internal drives + 80GB system drive
The system is fairly clean and reliable but - will it kill it running in HD content from this camera , or should I convert it down to DV (via the conversion in camera) before importing?

    Yes.
HDV has roughly the same data rate as DV. 3.6MB/s. So it can handle HDV just fine. Downconverting to DV will not be necessary.

  • Can the MacBook Pro 15" Retina with 2.0 GHz processor handle editing high-quality videos?

Will  the 2.0 GHz processor version be able to handle editing/exporting high-quality videos?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The processor can handle HD video editing without any issue, but the problem comes with the GPU, the Intel Iris Pro GPU.
That GPU is a bit better than the Intel Iris GPU included in the 13-inch MacBook Pro, but it is still not good enough for serious video editing. If you make videos as a hobby or it is not an important task for you, the MacBook Pro with the Intel Iris Pro GPU may be enough, because it works with HD vide editing. However, if you need the best performance, you need to go for the most expensive MacBook Pro, that comes with a NVIDIA GPU

  • Cheap camcorder suggestions / that can be easily uploaded to computer for editing

    Hi all,
I am looking for a camcorder for under $150 for my son who likes to make little videos.  He wants to be able to upload the video to his computer and edit them.  He does have Microsoft movie maker.  What would you suggest, the kind that have the USB port or the ones that record on to SD cards?  Also what type of file should the recording be in, so you can edit it?  Sorry I have no idea about editing features.  Any camcorder suggest would be appreciated.

If you are looking for a simple camcorder for fun little videos, and not for professional ones, I would reccomend the Kodak Playsport HD Camcorder. For the price, its is a nice little camcorder that shoots in 1080p and takes 5 MP stills. It connects to your computer via USB, so you can easily transfer the videos and pictures to your computer, and has an expandable memory slot so you can hold more videos and pictures at a time. It's also waterproof up to 10 feet, which is always a fun little feature. Great starter camera for fun videos to share with friends, family, and on the internet.

  • Can FCP6 convert an HDV 1920/1080 to  SD avi that could be edited inPP2.0

Can FCP6 convert an HDV 1920/1080 (EX1 files) clip to a SD avi that could be edited in Premiere pro2.0/Matrox rtx100?

Yes it should but results may be potentially disappointing.
QT based systems don't produce great AVI outputs and some sort of re-compression may be required.
    Try Compressor,
In Compressor *settings tab* there's a button with a plus icon on the top right corner. Click on it and in the popdown menu choose Quicktime Export Components.
You've just created a new untitled setting. It sits at the bottom of the settings in the untitled folder.
Double click it and/or see it in the inspector window. Give it a name and in the *encoder type* menu choose AVI.
Now if you click Options button below you can change a number of settings. Remember, the higher the bit rate the better the video will look but greater wil be the size of the video.
Do some tests to find best settings. *Do not* get inpatient during the testing process.
    Hope that helps,

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on? Have you updated 12 to 12.1 Update using an opened project's Help Menu/Update?
    If not, please do so.
Please clarify  "Can't add files filmed in 1080/60i to Premiere Elements 12."
Are you importing the 1080 60i into the project using (Expert workspace) Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets?
If so, are you getting an error message inside of the video appearing in Project Assets?
Are you setting the project preset manually or letting the program do that task automatically?
    What is the project preset?
    (See Edit Menu/Project Settings/General).
The project preset should be, for your 1080i...
    NTSC
    AVCHD
    Full HD1080i30
What is the project preset for the 1080p footage?
    (Also see Edit Menu/Project Settings/General.)
The project preset should be, for your 1080p
    NTSC
    DSLR
    1080p
DLSR 1080p30 or DLSR [email protected]
Since your camera appears to be producing AVCHD.mov files, do you have the latest version
of QuickTime installed on your computer with Premiere Elements 12/12.1?
The answers will be in the details. Please review and then let us know the details and results
    based on the above.

  • A1, Can not get Camera edits to Save. Arcsoft Gallery (Trial) will not upgrade

Sorry but I need to first start with a rant,
<rant> I receive the pad, spend days playing and customizing, learning features.  Once I ran across the edit feature from within the camera viewer (which was very cool), I played with a picture and went to "Save".  I was presented with a message that if I want to save I would need to "Buy" the app.  First off I was not in an app, I was using the built in camera viewer software, there was no identification, no "About" tab and I did not not use an external Icon to get to this point.  Ok, I suck up and press continue to find out the software is "Arcsoft Workshop 4.6 (Trial)" and the upgrade would be $2.99.  I really think this was a low blow from Lenovo as to beat up on their customers for mere $2.99.  Ok, after having to fight with the Lenovo app store (reg + fight crashes which are detailed elsewhere) I finally get it purchased and downloaded just to be awarded with the message "Can't Install" with an big red "X").  Now things continue go down hill..... </rant>
Ok, just before it bombed out I was given a message to "Replace an system app" which I also agreed to. That gave me the idea that the old application may be holding up the install process.  My great idea led me to uninstall  "Arcsoft workshop trial" which did not help anything and now I have no edit functions at all
When the app first mis-behaved I was asked by the app-store to report problems which I did, the next morning I had an email from a nice lady that worked at MobiHand (apparently they service the Lenovo app store)  and an attachment with the workshop apk file.  I was able to get that file to install
But wait, we are not done with this story...   I had Workshop back but if I clicked on ANY picture or tried to "Edit" from the camera I was presented with "Can not open image!"  Nothing I tried would work, I uninstalled, reinstalled, bla, bla.  I then returned the nice lady's email with the new problem with no response for the next 2 days.
Meanwhile I am trying to figure out how to get back to where I was to start with and have edit functions (how be-it with no ability to save).  Since I installed the trial app and did not have a copy to reinstall it back I was stuck.  After much research (on the forums) I was able to confirm that a factory reset would bring back the old app as well as perhaps fix a few other things that are plaguing me.  During the 4 system updates previously I made I never did the reset and all my customizing stayed (which I was happy about) but now with the pending reset I knew it would be the end of all my past week of work.  Of course I backed up everything but still the re-setup would be hours.  (<rant> all this for a #$!@#$@#$ "Save" button! </rant>)
    I followed this exact procedure;
    1. Made sure all updates were completed. (v3.2.1 (build ends with 1109)
    2. Factory Reset (under setup, privacy)
    3. Loaded Astro and backed up ALL my initial apps (including Workshop Trial)
    4. Set up Lenovo app store
    5. Took a test picture with the camera
    6. Viewed test picture and selected "edit"
    7. Made a test edit
    8. Selected "Result" and "Save", I was presented with the "you must buy" message
    9. Completed the Arcsoft Workshop 4.6 download and install  (Hurray no problems this time!)
    But wait.... The story continues.....
I go to edit a picture and was presented with 2 choices, Workshop and Workshop Trial.  For some reason I was not asked to overwrite the old trial version but I think to my self, this is OK and choose the new full app.
    I am presented with "Can't open Image!"    <rant> (&^#@%$^$&
Lets see, I have about 12 hours in this project to get a "Save" button and NaDa, no forward progress, Game further delayed, EKKKKKK! </rant>
Workshop trial at least still works as it always has.
<loud_rant> Now, I am po'd, nothing I did has caused this and the blooming thing just plain does not work, the words "I should have bought an Ipad" continue to beat in my head, after all the 8g iPAd2 was only $100 more, I really feel like returning this stupid thing but I suck it back up and fire an email to Arcsoft.  The next morning the reply was that Lenovo bundled the software and I should contact them (Did I tell you I spent 40 worthless minutes on the phone to them during the initial problem state?).  Now I am Livid, I told Arcsoft that it was the full version I paid $2.99 for that is malfunctioning, not the original bundled "Trial" version but of course that was ignored and the generic form letter response was issued.  I have fired off another very firm email to Arcsoft over the issue, no response to date (2 days now). </loud_rant>
It appears that satisfaction is no matter to Lenovo or Arcsoft, and  theydo not provide what they promise.  I hope this community can help with the problem, If I can't save an edited picture then they deserve to get the blooming thing back.
Thankx for any help someone can provide,
    Jmayes

Thanks for the tip on the edit.  I remembered to take the film off the lens.  In almost every review I read and viewed (I researched quite a while b/4 buying) mentioned the poor quality of the camera photos compared to other 5 MP cameras on other tablets.  I just didn't expect it to be this bad.  My neighbor has a Thrive and an Iconia both of which have 5 MP cameras and there is a world of difference even after you upload them to the computer.  It wasn't the 3.2 upgrade that affected the camera.....I think it is just poor quality hardware (most reviewers agree on that).  It is not a deal breaker for me more like I feel cheated.  Having the camera lens so close to the edge is a problem too since it seems to pick up finger prints on the glass covering the lens causing the photos to look drab.
Atleast they didn't put the earphone jack on the top causing the wire to drap across the screen if you are not careful like one of the tablets I saw.

  • Can I Scan to editable text on HP Officejet Pro 8620 using the Apple Printer Driver 3.0?

Can I Scan to editable text on HP Officejet Pro 8620 using the Apple Printer Driver 3.0?
I had a very difficult time getting my new HP Officejet Pro 8620 functioning as well as it does now.  I just tried scanning something as editable text for the first time and it ended up being scanned as a pdf.  At one point in my various tries there was a note on the printer screen that I did not have the HP OCR software installed.
This may be because the resolution to my installation problems with the HP Officejet Pro 8620 seems to have been reverting to operating with the HP-Apple Printer Drivers 3.0 package instead of the HP-Officejet-Pro-8620_v12.32.0.dmg installation package.
I do not, therefore, have the HP Scan application on my computer now which is where HP says its OCR software can be found.
So what I'm afraid of is that I'm now running well with the HP-Apple driver but if I do go back and install the HP Officejet Pro v12.32.0 driver software with the HP installer, in order to access the OCR softwware in HP Scan application, I'll mess up everything else.
Is there any chance that the HP-Apple Printer Drivers 3.0 package I have installed also includes OCR software?  If so where can I find instructions for activating it and using it with the HP 8620's scanner?
Or can I only get OCR capability with the HP-Officejet-Pro-8620_v12.32.0.dmg package?
Any experience with this?  Should I leave well enough alone?  Or can I somehow install the HP-Officejet-Pro-8620_v12.32.0.dmg package without messing up my current functionality?
    Thanks
    Steve

The printer driver that is installed automatically from Apple doesn't scan. The scanner part can be accessed through Image Capture, but I don't think that does any OCR on the scan. You'd need a separate program. As you noted, many of the bundled software programs have OCR built-in (albeit limited). From my experience, that is only activated when you scan to "searchable" PDF or something similar. You would then have to extract the text from the PDF.
I don't have an HP printer/scanner, so take this all with a grain of salt.
If you can just install the Scanner utilities, that shouldn't affect the printer portion.
Your other option would be to purchase separate OCR software. Unless you need to scan lots of documents into text, you should further investigate installing the HP scan utilities.

How can I save an edited converted (from PDF) file?

    Hi alisonr1825446,
When you convert a PDF file to Word/Excel, it's automatically saved to your Acrobat.com online account. From there, you can download it to your desktop to edit it, and then save it. To download your file, log in to https://cloud.acrobat.com/files. Select the file, and then click the Download link at the top of the file list. Your file will be downloaded to the Downloads folder on your computer.
Please let us know how it goes.

mistakingly calls a dvd drive a cd drive in bios and refuse to read dvds? I can't seem to read dvds with my current drive on a PIII platform. Is it just that a dvd drive is too far ahead of the computer's time?
It would not be uncommon for a p3 bios to not list dvd...this does not mean the dvd will not work on the machine, only that you can not boot from dvd. at least via this method. as suggested sometimes a bios update is possible, however it is not nessessary if you simply want to use the dvd drive for data read/write. playing commercial dvd movies would depend not so much on the bios but the speed, ram OS and player. in general a p3-650-256+ ram will read/write and play dvd..however hardware configuration can present some issues and more importantly the os configuration. some operating systems require you to add optical drives or dvd functionality during or after install. and my be listed in /etc/fstab or a configuration file for system drives. if this is not the case then you may need to check the drive. I usually do this on a system known to work well with dvd and go from there. That said
are you attempting to play a dvd movie? read a data dvd? what was the burn speed ?what is the dvd  reader speed? what are you reading the files with ie program? have you mounted your dvd? has the dvd drive worked for you before? what is the computer spec?
answer to any of these questions will help others to help you solve your dvd query
in my experience playing a dvd movie on a p3 does not require mount, simple open a player and click dvd...for data mount the dvd and view files in file manager..
    does that help at all
