Can not add Roles Server 2012 Standard R2

Every time I try and add the DFS Namespace and replication roles it says the server requires a re-boot.  I check to ensure the version of server is activated and it is.
I rebooted twice, checked for critical updates which there was none and tried again, same issues, re-boot required, rebooted again.
Next up I ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
This completed and said it fixed some metadata corruption.  Re-boot, Try role Install, same issue, reboot required.
Next I check Trusted Installer to see if there was a pending install, nothing, Registry is correct.
Next I checked the other two entries mentioned in other articles (pending server manager reboot, pending file rename operation) both had correct values.
I ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
found meta data corruption and fixed, reboot.
Try role install, same issue, pending reboot.  I have tried to install the rolls from a elevated powershell and through the server manager.
Last item I tried was to fix and .net corruption, and the tool would not work on Server 2012 R2.
I am now at a loss as to what to look to get these roles to install.
What are next steps, what can I do to get these roles installed?  I need to get replication working on this server but it is hard when you can not even add server roles.
Any help would be appreciated.

Dave,
I finally got the DFS roles installed, can not remember what I did to get them in besides get lucky.  I am now trying to install domain roles on this same Server, and I keep getting server needs a restart.  Check the registry no entries preventing
the install, installed critical updated, rebooted countless times.  When the server boots it reports the following:
It shows red under server mgr and manageability, with the message, "Online - Cannot get role and feature data"
I ran the DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /ScanHealth

  • Can not add new server

    Hi,
I install Oracle Workshop for WebLogic 10.3 on Windows Vista and I create new remote server without problem but I can not see server state.
So I delete server and try add new one. Unfortunately when new server popup window is open and I click next (to Specify a WebLogic domain directory/Specify a remote host name) I can not type connection data because all fields but Re-enter password are disabled for remote server type.
Next I try reinstall Oracle Workshop and this takes no effect.
    Thanks for answer.

In new installation BEA2 I create new domain and start it. After configuring WebLogic Runtime Oracle WebLogic Server connection start to live.
Same procedure with old installation doesn't work.

  • Can't find SQL Server 2012 Configuration Manager

In my Win8 I can't find SQL Server Configuration Manager.
I need to connect to an SQL Database using a specific port.
Does anyone know how to do that?
    Thanks a lot!!

    Hi Lina,
Did you install multiple SQL Server instances on your local server? We can not configure SQL Server 2012 instance under SQL Server 2008 R2 Configuration Manager.
If you had installed SQL Server Configuration Manager with SQL Server 2012, you can try to run "sqlservermanager11.msc". If this is not opening then you might not install SQL Server 2012 Configuration Manager.

  • Windows Server 2012 Standard - HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus printer not working after promoting to Domain Controller / AD Services

An associate and myself installed the built-in drivers for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus multi-function (network) printer on a Windows Server 2012 Standard server installation and everything worked fine whenever I want to print anything directly from the
Windows Server machine (there's a reason for this, so please understand that ;)  ).
We were able to print without any problems from the Windows Server 2012 machine, using the drivers from Microsoft.  Mainly, because HP has not listed any specific support for Windows Server 2012, only Windows Server 2008 R2, however, the drivers that
came with Windows 2012 seem to work very well.
PROBLEM: I later had to promote the Windows Server 2012 to a Domain Controller, and created the Active Directory configurations, even enabled the Print Services.  After doing all of that, the HP printer will not print anything.  It's like all print
requests directly from the Windows Server go to Nil.
Has anyone encountered a problem like this before? The only thing I can think of is that after perhaps something affected printing directly once we promoted the server to being a DC, and added other features / roles.  I even tried installing the
HP drivers for Windows Server 2008 R2, and the results are still the same...nothing prints.  Trust me, the printer is set as the Default Printer and even when choosing to print, we make sure the HP OfficeJet Pro is selected, and is on, as other Windows
Client PC's can print to it directly.
Does anyone have any suggestions we could try?  Thanks in advance.

While it is quite a while since this was posted - I can concur a similar issue exists.
We have spent the better part of a day trying to work out why other HP printers work fine but our 8620 prints are not printing and going to Nil.  The print server is hosted on a shared DC.  Comparing to the initial posters details, for some reason
it seems to be most commonly related to the OfficeJet Pro 8600/8610/8620/8630 series printers.
I ended up doing a print server migration from the domain controller to stand alone host and all printers now work from a single server rather than a mix.  Domain controller OSes varied from 2008, 2012, 2012 R2 (tested with multiple) and only after
all of those failed then tried a stand alone server os machine as a last resort which worked fine.  Printing directly from Win 7 / 8 /8.1 clients to the IP always worked.

  • Upgrade to Server 2012 Standard (user limit fix) - Not Supported?

Which WD Sentinel do you have? The process is only supported and applies to the WD Sentinel DS5100 and DS6100 since they have different hardware than the DX and RX series.

There aren't any huge differences in the operating system when going from Server 2012 R2 Essentials to Server 2012 R2 Standard. The biggest peice is that users need to purchase the correct licencing before making the swap. Western Digital appears to have created a video to assist users with the transitions from the stock operating system to Server 2012 Standard. (Upgrade DS6100 to Server 2012 Standard) The upgrade process itself based on the video and mention of the upgrade in the administrator's/owners manual gives the appearance that such an upgrade is endorsed/supported by WD. Appearances, however, can be deceiving. Midway through the process I ran into a problem (Raid Config Problem) and attempted to contact customer support over the phone. After being elevated up to a second level of support I was told over the phone that because I had made changes to my unit that it was no longer in its original confiuration, I had voided my warranty, and I am on my own until I restore the unit to its original configuration. I mentioned to the tech that I don't think I did anything outside the bounds of what I should be doing based on the video (link above) and the following exerpt from the administrator's manual: "Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials supports up to 25 users and 50 devices. When your business needs exceed the limit, you can purchase an additional license and upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard." The response I received was fairly surprising to say the least. I was directed to page 80 GPU/GPL section: "Modification of or tampering with the Software, including but not limited to any Open Source Software, is solely at your own risk. Western Digital is not responsible for any such modification or tampering. Western Digital will not support any product in which you have or have attempted to modify the Software supplied by Western Digital." In my specific case, I knew what the issue was and more specifically, I knew exactly what I needed to resolve the issue (the installation binaries for the Raid Configuration Utility). The tech on the phone said that since I had modified the OS, that I needed to reach out to Microsoft for assistance (which makes no sense since the software in question is Western Digital's) and refused to provide me with any information on how I might obtain the installation software. Ultimately I resolved the issue on my own by pure happenstance. I encourage anyone even thinking about buying one of these units for a medium to large business to be very leery and way your options carefully. I'd be happy to provide my case # to anyone at WD who would like to contact me and/or look at the particulars of my problem.

In Firefox 4.0 I have a server ... it contains a self signed certificate. Using IPv6 I can not add a "Security Exception" for this certificate.
    1. I log onto the server (using IPv6). I get the "Untrusted connection page" saying "This connection is Untrusted"
    2. I click on "Add Exception.." under the "I understand the Risks" section.
    3. The "Add Security Exception" dialog comes up. soon after the dialog comes up I get an additional "Alert" dialog saying

Please note that this works in Firefox 3.6.16 (in IPv4 and IPv6). It also works in Firefox 4.0 in IPv4 only IPv6 has an issue. What's wrong?

Exactly the same problem, except I'm using FF v6 for Windows, not FF v4 as for the lead post. This is for a self-cert which IS trusted, although the error message says it isn't.

  • Migrate SBS 2003 with AD and Exchange to Windows Server 2012 Standard

We are using SBS 2003 and we have configured Exchange server and AD with DNS and DHCP. Now we are planning to move SBS 2003 to Separate servers like windows server 2012 standard AD with DNS and DHCP and Windows server 2012 Standard with Exchange
    2010.
Is it Possible?? we need step by step guide.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
You probably would not find any step by step guide for this kind of migrations. If you are not comfortable with doing such migrations I would recommend to if you need to do it your self do some test migrations. Or otherwise get help by a local IT company
    that is familiar with migrations.
But to give you some information, first thing before starting a migration is check the health of your SBS 2003 server / domain. Use tools like dcdiag, netdiag and best practice analyzer. I wrote a blog post about steps to think about before you start this
    might help: http://blog.ronnypot.nl/?p=914
When every thing is clean you can start adding the new windows server 2012 machines as member servers to your domain.
Next you can promote one of the servers to additional domain controller on your domain (Keep in mind SBS needs to hold all FSMO roles so moving these is the last step your should do.) Also promoting a windows server 2012 to domain controller has slightly
changed, you need to install the ADDS role and follow the wizard to promote the server to a DC.
With installation of the new DC install DNS allongsite it will automatic replicate settings during confiugration.
DHCP must be installed manual, depending on your scope and settings it might be as easy to create a new scope and disable the old dhcp server.
On the server Exchange needs to be installed, make sure you install and do all pre-requirements. Than install Exchange it will automaticly detect you already have an Exchange organization and is installed as additional server. You can configure all settings
and when everything is configured right you start moving mailboxes.
When everything is moved away from the SBS 2003 server, uninstall exchange, move the FSMO roles to the new DC and after that demote the sbs 2003 server so it is not listed anymore as an additional DC in the domain. Last would be shutdown the server and remove
all records left in AD and DNS.
There is this guide for migrating SBS 2003 to windows server 2008 R2 and Exchange 2010, this might give you some usefull information, not everything will be the same but it is a good start:

  • SharePoint 2013 Enterprise and SQL Server 2012 Standard edition vs. Enterprise - feature question

I can't seem to find any clear answers to the implications of installing SQL Server 2012 standard edition vs. enterprise in regards to SharePoint 2013.
I understand that to get many of the features you need Enterprise edition of SQL 2012; but, what I can't figure out is if the backend SharePoint SQL 2012 is standard; but, the PowerPivot/SSRS server is Enterprise will we still get the features?
If we have 3 tier SharePoint farm, one of those tiers is for the SQL Server database backend.  If that SQL instance is 2012 standard and we add another server to the farm w/ SQL 2012 Enterprise to handle the tabular models, PowerPivot, and SSRS in integrated
mode will we still get the features?
Or, can we (should we) install Enterprise 2012 as the SharePoint database backend and let that instance triple down as also the PowerPivot and SSRS instance?

    Hi MMilligan,
SQL Server 2012 Standard is not supported PowePivot for SharePoint . In addition, SQL Server 2012 Standard is also not support some Reporting Services Features.

  • Windows Server 2012 Standard and Essentials User CAL's

I've been running Windows Server 2012 Essentials in an organization that until recently stayed within the 25 user 50 network device limit specified by the license. Eventually we've grown beyond that. Since the Server 2012 Essentials machine had a non-transferable
OEM license I decided not to waste it by doing an in-place migration to Server 2012 Standard, and instead set up a new server with freshly purchased Server 2012 R2 Standard and migrated Active Domain roles to it, leaving the original server as a part of a
    fail-over cluster.
We purchased 30 User CAL's for the 2012 R2, as required for 25+ staff members.
Now I am curious. The 2 servers that we have right now (2012 R2 Standard and 2012 Essentials) both maintain the same Active Directory and manage the same pool of users and workstations. Does that mean that the primary server with 30 User CAL's takes dominance
and sets the limit as to how many people are allowed to access the network. Or does it become a combination of purchased 30 CAL's + 25 Users hard-wired into the 2012 Essential edition?
Do these servers have to run separate domains with segregated pools of users in order to be license compliant for 30+ users or can they exist within the same same domain preserving individual user limits? What if the 2012 Essentials server maintains
one office location with fewer than 25 staff and the Standard R2 2012 server runs another office with fewer than 30 staff, while both offices are linked via a VPN for the purpose of sharing 3rd party licenses? Do individual user limits apply, or is it still
    30 users max?
To sum up the question, I'd like to know whether I'd need to buy more user CAL's when we reach more than 30 staff at 1 or possibly 2 office locations.
Oh, and the device limit! 2012 R2 Standard under user CAL licensing scheme has no machine limits. Essentials is always capped at 50. When running one active directory, what's the legally allowed number of devices on the network? I assume it's unlimited.
    Thanks.

    Thank you for the reply.
My question then is how to transition while preferably keeping both physical servers.
Should a 2012 Standard key be purchased additionally for an in-place transition of 2012 Essentials machine to 2012 Standard (which at this point is as good as a fresh install)? Until then, should the Essentials 2012 server be taken offline entirely?
What about the situation where I described both servers running segregated networks with their own pools of users, only connected via a VPN for 3rd party license sharing? Is that configuration supported?
Also, if the configurations is unsupported, why are the servers able to share roles in first place? Why isn't there a software mechanism preventing interaction? What configuration do the servers themselves assume is in place?
    Thanks again.

  • Windows Server 2012 Standard License and VMs

    Hi,
With one Window server 2012 Standard activated license, I will get 2 VMs. So is there a limit with Windows Server 2012 standard license I can stack and the the number of VMs I can create on one server or across servers (virtual environment). Consider that
all Windows server 2012 standard licenses are activated. If there is no limit on VM creation by add Standard license then why did Microsoft come with Data center licenses with unlimited VMs.
How does the standard license work on Vmware environment. Is there a limit on the number for VMs that we can create.
    Please advise me.
    Thanks.

If i had one server 2012 standard with its key, i could run it as a vm but not as a virtual host without having the license right?
a single WS2012STD license, allows you to run a server machine (hardware), if that hardware has no more than 2 processors. In this case, you can run 2 VMs, each VM is running WS2012STD. You can also run WS2012STD as the host hypervisor via Hyper-V.
So, that's really 3 OS installations, on the same 2proc machine. The limitation is that the host hypervisor OS is only permitted to do Hyper-V stuff, it's not permitted to use that OS for anything other than hypervisor functions.
If you implement in this way, you would only have purchased a single license for WS2012STD, so you would only have a single key, so you would use that key for the 3 OS installations.
If i bought the single server 2012 standard license, i'd be able to install it as a Host and activate with the key and it'd give me rights to run 2vms on it and for those vms i would have to have 2 keys to activate after installing server 2012 standart
    software on them right?
     see above.
if you buy via Volume Licensing, things change a little bit due to MAK/KMS keys (it gets a whole lot simpler :)
Sorry for being unclear on the clusters part, i meant HA/failover. we have 2 2008R2 enterprise servers in cluster with shared storage and i was trying to clarify how could i add more vms there.
assuming your failover solution involves traditional server hardware, each failover node is just another hardware machine, so, for each node you have to count up the procs and VMs, just as you would do for non-failover implementations.
if a server is installed and running/executing, it needs to be licensed.
with current configuration, each server is hosting 2vms and if anything happens single host can accommodate all four. I am assuming we have 2 enterprise licenses for them, but if i wanted to run 4vms on each host, we have to buy 2 more enterprise licenses
and install vm togerther with their keys?
There is no Enterprise for WS2012? (WS2012 has STD and DCE)
do you mean as in WS2008R2ENT ?
You can re-assign licenses from one machine to another machine (under the Volume Licensing terms. I'm not sure about Retail terms, you should check that). There are limitations on how often you can reassign licenses (no more than every 90days)
If hardware "fails", you are allowed to reassign the license in a shorter period than 90days.

  • How can i use ONE server 2012 to be DC for a domain on the WAN only.. NO LAN. and NO VPN..

I need to run an active directory that is on a WAN (Utah). a server 2012 standard will be the DC with 60Mbps internet speed both up and downstream.
approximately 100 clients/member systems will be all over the united states. NO VPN. only via internet. I can use SSL certificate for secure ldap.
I need this setup to use GPO for different permissions and policies instead of manually doing those on each windows 7 or 8 professional system.
    Ideas??

    Daniel,
I think since this will be the ONLY system that will be running as a DC providing ADDS and the Direct access server, i should follow this advice from the article you sent:
For users who never connect directly to the Contoso intranet or through a VPN, they must use the DirectAccess
Offline Domain Join process to initially join the appropriate domain and configure DirectAccess. When this process
is complete, the users log on normally and have the same experience as if they were directly connected to the Contoso intranet.
Because remember, no user will ever connect directly to the subnet where the server is. so do an offline join First and then start managing.. Only thing im worried about is: they keep saying that the direct access function has significantly improved in windows
    8. hmmmmm many systems will be using windows 7 Pro 64Bit. Some windows 8.1 Pro 64bit. should i worry?
