Can not successfully change character encoding in a filename

Hi,
I have a file zipped in MS-Windows environment, so that the names of the files inside are encoded in Big5 encoding.
(I am from Taiwan, which uses Big5 encoding)
And after unzipping, the files are incorrectly encoded.
The problem is that I have heard that "convmv" can do this, but I failed.

No, I don't think Character/word spacing function exist for Textbox, I think Adobe should take this as a feature request :-)

Thats correct you must be getting Error message M3 341 ,
EAN international article number is tied with material number in basic data view with EAN Category and seperate number range
EAN is a standardized unit that uniquely identifies a material relating to a unit of measure or type of packaging.
The International Article Number (EAN) is assigned by the manufacturer of the material. In this case, the EAN identifies the
manufacturer uniquely. A company can assign EANs using "in-store" numbering techniques known only to the company.
If you still want to change UOM you need to first remove the EAN assigned..please explore further if you have internal number range
for EAN or external ..etc

When creating a new event it tells me "attendees can not be changed" I didn't try to change attendees I was simply inviting one. What's happening? I did a reboot but the same message showed up again

I am trying to invite one person to an event. I click the plus sign create the event and add my one attendee. However, when I go to complete it the attendee is no where to be found and I get a pop up box that's says "attendee can not be changed". I didn't change the attendee. The names was pulled from the address book with no problem. I do notice when I go to change my calendar that the attendee line seems to disappear. Help? I am using iCloud with Mac book Pro, ipad2 and iPhone.

Tips I received so far (thanks to A-Mac via Twitter http://www.a-mac.nl and Remco Kalf http://www.remcokalf.nl/)
- make sure you have at least 10% of your harddisk in free space (I had only 5%).
- do a PRAM-reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
- perform a hardware test (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509)
- make a complete backup (with for example Carbone Clone Copier, see http://www.bombich.com/)
- after complete backup: use diskwarrior (boot from Diskwarrior DVD, first perform diagnostics, then perform "Rebuild" which rebuilds your file directory).
So far I only cleared up some space on my HD, and already the problem occurs less.
Still, I will go through the other tips too.

The audio file can not be changed! - help

I really need help. I just installed Logic Express 8, and I tried to import a song in order to edit it (as a lead in music bed for a podcast). Every song I import in says I am unable to edit it - "The audio file can not be changed! Volume or file is locked."
How do I unlock the file/volume in order to edit t? This is the only reason why I purchased Logic and if I cannot do this I spent a lot of money for no reason. Please help.

OK, basics first..
if the audio was 'bought' from itunes or some other download, it could have some kind of 'digital rights management' (DRM) on it. So you won't be able to edit anything, it's protected. Nothing you can do there.
Also make sure it isn't already open in another application that might be 'holding on' to it.
However, it could be something simple to do with protections on the file itself.
Locate the music file you imported on your harddisk click on it once so it is highlighted, now press cmd-i, or select file menu and 'get info'.
There are some settings here where one can 'lock' a file. There is a check box under the 'general' section that needs to be unchecked, there is also a 'permissions' section at the bottom of the 'info' window of the file.
Make sure you have read and write permissions.

I am afraid you have come across the Live Rectangle bug which is limited to the MAC versions starting with 10.7 and 10.8, but not 10.9 (Mavericks) or 10.10 (Yosemite). Hopefully, the bug will be fixed soon.
So a switch to Mavericks or Yosemite with a reinstallation might be the way to solve it here and now.
To get round it in each case, it is possible to Expand the Live Rectangles to get normal old fashioned rectangles, or to Pathfinder>Unite, or to use the Scale Tool or the Free Transform Tool.
A more permanent way round that is to create normal old fashioned rectangles, after running the free script created by Pawel, see this thread with download link:

I deleted the "desktop" in tiger, can't "alias", "copy" or "drag & drop" anything to it now, I get a message that "desktop can not be changed"

I was trying to make an alias of "SAFARI" icon to have on the desktop & in the dock as well, I managed to make the safari icon appear on the desktop, but when I wanted to switch from firefox to safari it wouldn't open / start safari, so OK, no big deal, I moved it the trash, ( by rt. click,>move to trash>click ) the horror starts here, everything on the desktop disappeared into the trash !!!!! ......
So I have tried to "drag & drop", "alias", "copy", "duplicate" to get things back out of the trash, but every attempt is met with a message "the desktop con not be changed", and whatever I try to bring anything out of the trash window, it gets a "minus - sign" added to it when it crosses over the edge of the trash window, and of course it jumps right back into the trash when the mouse button is released.
I think (barely) I will need the do a "clean install", or a "restore" from the install DVD to restore / get the desktop back.
And while the only thing on the desktop now is the HDD icon, clicking it open does not show the desktop in the Lf. column of the window where it should be, or any OS X folders when clicking on anything, but the OS is is running for this post and yahoo, etc., and there is a upward facing arrow next to the "network" name in the left column, that doesn't go away, like after installing some software, this is weird !!

Or, did you click on the safari icon then right click on the safari icon then click on open?
I do not understand how you that moving to the trash would be helpful.
I suspect disk corruptions.
I run disk utility verify the file system on your starup disk. See below.

I suggest that you use disk utility to verify that your startup disk is OK. Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility Start up disk utility. On the left pane view, you will see a list of all your disks. click on your startup disk. Click on the First Aid Tab. Click on verify. Hopefully your disk will verify. If not, you have to boot from your installation DVD and run Disk First Aid from there to attempt to repair your file-system.

I am developing a servlet which supposed to be used to send and receive message
in multiple character set. However, I read from the previous postings that each
Weblogic Server can only support one input character encoding. Is that true?
And do you have any suggestions on how I can do what I want. For example, I
have a HTML form for people to post any comments (they may post in any characterset,
like ShiftJIS, Big5, Gb, etc). I need to know what character encoding they are
using before I can read that correctly in the servlet and save in the database.

From what I understand (I haven't used it yet) 6.1 supports the 2.3
servlet spec. That should have a method to set the encoding.
Otherwise, I don't think you can support multiple encodings in one
instance of WebLogic.
From what I know browsers don't give any indication at all about what
encoding they're using. I've read some chatter about the HTTP spec
being changed so it's always UTF-8, but that's a Some Day(TM) kind of
thing, so you're stuck with all the stuff out there now which doesn't do
everything in UTF-8.
Sorry for the bad news, but if it makes you feel any better I've felt
your pain. Oh, and trying to process multipart/form-data (file upload)
forms is even worse and from what I've seen the API that people talk
about on these newsgroups assumes everything is ISO-8859-1.

Change character encoding?

Edit > Preferences > New Document > Character
encoding is set to UTF-8
However when I edit documents with non-standard extensions
(I'm working on PHP files with a .ctp extension) the document still
seems to save in iso-8859-1 format. This problem doesn't seem to
occur on files with .php/html extensions.
Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?

I'm not sure where you are getting %xx encoded UTF-8.... Is it cuz you have it in a GET method form and that's what you are seeing in the browser's location bar? ...
Let's assume you have a form on a page, and the page's charset is set to UTF-8, and you want to generate a URL encoded string (%xx format, although URLEncoder will not encode ASCII chars that way...).
In the page processing the form, you need to do this:
request.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8"); // makes bytes read as UTF-8 strings(assumes that the form page was properly set to the UTF-8 charset)
String fieldValue = request.getParameter("fieldName"); // get value
// the value is now a Unicode String in Java, generated from reading the bytes submitted from the form as UTF-8 encoded text...
String utf8EncString = URLEncoder.encode(fieldValue, "UTF-8");

euckrValue = new String(utf8Value.getBytes(), "EUC-KR");
What this does is takes the bytes of the string utf8Value (which is not really UTF-8... see below) in the local encoding (possibly Cp1252 (Windows) or ISO8895-1 (Linux), or EUC-KR if it's Korean Windows), and then reads them as if they were EUC-KR... which they aren't.
The key here is that Strings in Java are not of any encoding. They are pure Unicode values. Encodings only matter when converting to or from bytes. The strings stored in a file or sent over the net have to convert to bytes since that's what is stored/sent, just bytes. The encoding defines how the characters can be encoded into 1 or more bytes, and thus reconstructed.

Condition type value can not be changed in PO pricing

I have created PO which is having pricing procedure consisting different condition type. When i create any subsequent document (MIGO or MIRO) and realized that condition value in the pricing need to be changed so I have reversed all subsequent document so that can carry out "update pricing".
when i press Update pricing button on the condition tab, its showing message that new pricing can not be carried out. I observed that some condition types of pricing are grayed out.
Kindly help to solve this problem. Kindly help me how to 1) update pricing or 2) can change value of condition type.

Since your system does't allow you change and since you have reversed all the subsequent docs why dont you delete the PO item and add a new one with right pricing..
i guess it will solve your problem..

After updating to Mavericks, password can not be changed anymore

I upgraded to Mavericks and encountered a serious security problem. In system prefs it is no longer possible to change any of the security settings on the "general" tab. It is possible to change the checkmarks, but after closing the sys prefs, the changes are ignored and the screen saver and auto-login checkmarks re-appear. It is also impossible to go to the advanced settings. Off course: I did first click the lock and entered my password.
Furthermore in the Users and Groups section I can not change my password, name or anything crucial. Clicking the checkmarks or on "change password" does give a short "movement" but nothing happens.
Is there another cure than reformatting the HDD and have aa clean install? I did use the repair option two times, but that does not change anything anyhow. It even remembers the Safari cache; so far for a repair install. I also manually delete the system prefs cache manually, all with no result
I would appreciate the help.

If it is allowing you to make changes in some cases, but not retaining those changes, the first thing I would do would be a permissions repair (unclear if this is what you meant by "use[ed] the repair option", or if you meant a volume repair). You may find the following article helpful:

Also, if it will allow you to create a new admin user, you may want to see if the issue persists in the new user, which will help to narrow down the possible causes.

Changing character encoding in ps xml pub. from utf-8 to iso-8859-1

I am using xml publisher to generate a report in a pdf format, now my problem is user has entered a comment which is not supported by utf but in iso-8559-1 its working fine,
I tried to change the encoding in people code, xml doc file ,schema and xliff file but still the old formatting exist,should I change somewhere else.
Following the error i get when trying to generate pdf:"Error generating report output: (235,2309)Error occurred during the process of generating the output file from template file, XML data file, and translation XLIFF file.".The parser is not able to recognise with utf-8 encoding.

I had the same issue. I created the xml through rowset and used string substitute function and its working.
Sample:
&inXMLDoc = CreateXmlDoc("");
&ret = &inXMLDoc.CopyRowset(&rsHdr);
&sXMLString = &inXMLDoc.GenFormattedXmlString();
