Can't access serial number. Now what?

We long forgot the password of this device and it is disabled. It says to connect to Itunes. I did that but Itunes either ignores the device or says "Itunes could not connect to the ipod because it is locked with a passcode". So thedevice says to see itunes, itunes says to see the device. Catch 22? I hate to tell the kid that her ipod is only good for parts because she forgot the password. Several posts I've read say to put the device in recovery mode then connect to itunes. It doesn't do anything differently.
I thought I could contact apple but they say that I need theserial number off this device. However, it haslong been scratchedup like the rest of the casing and I cannot access itunes toretrieve it there. So apple won't let me ask a question (now ift they had put the serial number somewhere other than the soft cheap plastic case I might be able to do something about this - but of course, that makes too much sense).
Thanks

Are you looking for the serial number or the IMEI? If the phone was active on your Verizon acount, Verizon can give you the IMEI.
