Can't Add Shared Printers in Leopard!

Leopard's shared printer support has been very poor for me. I have a Brother HL-2040 and a Dymo label printer hooked up to an iMac and under Tiger, any Mac on the network could print to either of them. Since upgrading both my iMac and MacBook Pro to Leopard, things have been very different. For the first few weeks, I had to keep "adding" the printers, because they would keep disappearing from the list of available printers. I'd click "add" and it would find the drivers and away we'd go. It was a 20 second process that was a little annoying but I could live with it.
However, in the last day or two, things have deteriorated. Now, when I click "add" (either from the print dialog box or from the Print/Fax System preference) it seems to look for a driver, and can't find one. So I type the printer model name into the search box and it finds it. I click on it and click "add" but it gives me an error, saying that the printer could not be added.
So both shared printers appear (via Bonjour presumably) as available, but error out when I try to add them.
If anyone has any workarounds I'd love to hear them. For now I have to plug the printers directly into my MacBook whenever I want to use them.

Plug the Dymo into your computer directly and print a label. That will load the drivers. You can then add it successfully via Bonjour. What you want to see however is a 'Bonjour Shared' printer when you add - if the Labelwriter only shows up a as shared printer it won't work in my experience.
The problem turned out to be that if you're connected via a base station you need one that supports multi-cast for Bonjour to work correctly. This drove me crazy until I finally ended up buying a Belkin to replace the Zyxel. Printing to the shared Labelwriter works perfectly now.

  • Can't add Shared Member using API

I would like to create a lot of shared members.Using API I do it as following according to documentation: ESS_MBRINFO_T MbrInfo; memset(&MbrInfo, '\0', sizeof(MbrInfo)); strcpy(MbrInfo.szMember, (char*)mbrName); MbrInfo.usShare = ESS_SHARE_SHARE; sts = EssOtlAddMember(getOutline(), &MbrInfo, ESS_NULL, hMbr, &hNewMember); When I try to add shared member, then sts = 1060051.So I have to change names and after correct them manually.Using HAB API I can't add shared member too.Regards,Georgy

  • I can't see shared printers from a Mac with Leopard

Hi there we got a new MacPro that came with Leopard but when I want to add the printers shared by two old Macs it can't see them, it only find and HP Color LaserJet 2600n that was shared on a Mac Book. The other Macs has OSX 10.3.9 (a G5) and 10.3 (a G4), one share a HP LaserJet 1200 and the other an Epson Inkjet Printer. We also have a MacPro (a core 2 duo) with OSX 10.4 that can find all the printers.
I was wondering if the version of the old Macs has something to do with my problem, maybe the Leopard can't reach them or something like that.
    Thanks
    PERCY

Have a look at this article from Apple

It covers the issues with Leopard seeing printers shared by 10.3.

  • MacBook Pro on 10.6 can't see shared printers

I just updated my Macbook Pro last week to 10.6.   I have my old desk top mac running 10.3.9 and serving up shared printers.
I just realized my laptop now does not see the shared printers.  DId Apple make it so that 10.6 won't play nice with earlier versions???
    Is there a fix?
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Just to add a little more info to the story I had upgraded my Hard drive from a 5400 RPM 250gig model that came with the computer to one that was made by Seagate and installed in 2011, 7200 RPM 750 gigs.  Is it normal to fail after not even 2 years?
When I try to repair the Disk using Disk Repair I get the Error Message "Invalid content in Journal."  Can anyone enlighten me to what this means?  Trying to repair the disk does not resolve this issue.
Also trying to start in single user mode and run fsck failed and I got a bunch of error messages that ran on a continuous loop.

  • Lpadmin to add shared printers to clients

My setup:  A Mini running 10.6.8 Server and thirty late model iMacs running 10.6.8 as clients.  Sever is sharing four late model wide format Epsons for use by the iMacs.  Printers are shared on the server via ipp.  Sever and clients have identical print drivers and PPDs installed.
I want to be able to use lpadmin to add printers to the clients.  In the past I've been able to do this in this particular setup using an dnssd queue in the lpadmin command.  My preference would be an ipp queue but I've never been able to get that to work.
After upgrading printer drivers I cannot get any sort of lpadmin command to properly load a functioning printer.  HELP!
    What does work:
I can use lpadmin to add a printer to a client bypassing the server and connecting directly to the networked printer (lpd queue)
I can add a server hosted printer to a client using the gui and the default browser and all is well.  This works for "Shared" printers (ipp queue) and for "Bonjour Shared" printers (dnssd queue)
    What doesn't work:
I cannot add a server hosted printer using the gui and the IP tab by selecting the IPP option and entering the server IP Address and proper queue name.
No form of lpadmin command that I have tried (MANY) will successfully add a printer.  This includes command formats that did work before the driver upgrades.
On these options that fail, the printer seems to be properly added.  The correct driver is loaded and the user sees all of the correct and unique options for the printer in the print dialog.  Upon printing the job fails on the client.  It never reaches the server.  The Apple print queue shows the job as "printing" and "copying data" for a while then either puts the printer into a Pause state (most common) or shows a Communication Error message.   The most common error log segment looks like this:
    D [08/Feb/2012:09:27:39 -0600] [Job 20] Set job-printer-state-message to "Empty print file!", current level=ERROR
    D [08/Feb/2012:09:27:39 -0600] [Job 20] cgpdftoraster: bytes written for sheet 1 = 33100650

    D [08/Feb/2012:09:27:39 -0600] [Job 20] printer-state-reasons=paused
Here's a very small portion of the lpadmin versions that I've tried.  I've done all of the below also using the -P option to specify the driver file location in /Library/printers…  And I've also tried not specifying a driver at all.  I've tried placing -E at different places within the command or leaving it out altogether.  I've tried leaving the -o option out.  I'm not sure where else to look.
    lpadmin -p 4900_Photo -E -L "FAC 162B" -v ipp://129.62.177.206:631/printers/4900_Photo -m EPSON\ Epson\ Stylus\ Pro\ 4900.gz -o printer-is-shared=false
    lpadmin -p 4900_Photo -L "FAC 162B" -v dnssd://4900_Photo%20%40%20artlab-server._ipp._tcp.local./cups -m EPSON\ Epson\ Stylus\ Pro\ 4900.gz -o printer-is-shared=false -E
    Any hints greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
This can be caused by using large fonts in the Windows Display Settings, the text will move the button out of the field of view on the form, and the form will not resize to compensate. Please go to Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization ->
Display, change to a smaller font size to check the result.
We may also suspect the Screen Resolution caused this, change to a different resolution to check the result.

  • Can't access shared printers x64 win 7

    Hello:
I have a Windows 2008 R2 print server. I have installed both 64 bit and 32 bit drivers. I recently just started to deploy Win7x64 bit systems. When I try to connect to the printer I get this error. (printers are HP lasterjet 4015p) (other copiers and even
HP laserjet 4350 I can connect to w/the x64 bit machines)
"Windows cannot connect to the printer. Some driver files are missing or incorrect. Reinstall the driver or try using the latest version."
The 32 bit clients have not problems connecting to the printers.
I can't even manually install the drivers on the PCs first. I get the same error.
    I have tried:
    1. UNC'ing to server and double clicking on printer
    2. deleting printer driver and reinstall, but can't install driver
    3. grabbed original cd that came with printer and try to install
    4. tried the add printer wizard

Sorry, it took so long to get back to everyone. I was able to fix this but just changing the drive to a different one on the print server and then changing it back to the original driver that was on the server. Now my x64 bit clients can connect to the
printers just fine. Why I had to switch out the drivers in the first place is beyond me. Thanks for the help people.

  • Printing From iBook To Printer on Vista Desktop, Can't see shared printers

Printing From iBook To Printer on Windows Vista Desktop, Can't see shared printer on a Vista machine from a Mac, although Windows notebooks find it immediately.
I have previously always had success sharing printers on Windows XP machines with my iBooks. . However upon installing Vista RC1 on my desktop I find I can no longer find the printer in the Mac's printer setup utility. When I dual boot back to XP everything works fine, but on the same machine when I boot into Vista I am unble to see the printers. The Mac printer setup utility finds the Vista machine on the network, but the printers are never visible. Is their some secret or channge in Vista that prevents Mac's running , in my case,Tiger 10.4.8 from seeing a shared printer on a computer running Vista
On the Vista machine, if I boot into XP The printer is shared and Windows notebooks can print to it, but neither of my iBooks can see the Printers when Vista is running.

That might have been the situation for the beta's and first RC's, but I have a final build. Plus the fact that other Windoze notebooks see the printer on the Vista box just fine leads one to believe it is a mac/Vista specific issue.
If anyone actually has experience with a MAC and Vista , I would appreciate hearing from you.
    thanks,

  • How can I allow shared printers to be unpaused be remove users

I have a Mac Mini sharing the printers for our students. We are a BYOD school and I find providing a shared printer is a great way to get the printers configured on computers we do not own.
However if the printer jams or some other problem occurs then someone attempts to print to the printer the "server" pauses the printer. The user is unable to manage the print server queue to unpause it.
Is there a way to fix this? I ran through some changes to the cupsd.conf file as suggested in http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20081107092520601 however that appears to only resolve local users on the "server".
Anyway to fix this? We have no issues with our Windows solution automatically starting the queue back up.

Might have better luck in the Lion Server forum.

  • Can't start iCal Service on Leopard Ser. while attached to 10.4 Open Dir.

After receiving our AMP upgrade Monday, we started the exciting task of testing the new features of Leopard. What we're most interested in right now is iCal group calendaring. Here's my dilemma:
I have successfully taken advantage of many Leopard Server services such as iChat and Mail. When I try to Start iCal, I get the error, "No virtual host found for iCal service - More information about configuring the iCal Service and connecting this server to a directory server can be found in the help menu."
In Directory, I can see all my Open Directory Users and Groups. When I try to create any new item such as a Shared Contact, I get the error, "Directory was unable to find any Open Directory servers. - Please make sure the server you want to use is configured using Directory Utility."
Using the Directory Utility, I can see my 10.4 Open Directory is set up with no issues.
    Any ideas?

Same problem here, I can see all my OD users but I can't add shared contacts.

  • Can not add new printer

I reset my printer list on my mother's MacBook and tried to add a new printer. There are no printers to add in the Add Printer list. I ran Repair Disk Permissions and still I can not add any printers through the System Preferences>Print & Fax. Why are there no printers to select?

Try reinstalling the printer drivers (software) that came with the printer or go to the printer manufacture web site and download the drivers there.

  • Open Directory Users can't add printers

    Hi all,
I've set up my teachers on OD on OS X Server 10.5 but now when they log in, they cannot add any printers. I've tried many different things to get the lock on the Print & Fax System Pref to be unlocked by default but nothing I've tried works.
When I log into the computer as an admin, the Print & Fax is unlocked. Logging in as a user via OD locks it. I've checked to make sure that the users are not being managed via OD prefs. Even if they are the lock still appears. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?
    thanks!

Ah! Thanks! No wonder I cannot do this...
Unfortunately, the printers are all USB shared printers connected to computers on the network. Is there anyway to preset these printers? They don't show up in the Print manage settings at all.

  • Epson shared printers- can't control print quality

    Hi someone,
We have an espon stylus photo 1280, and an epson stylus photo R200.
Both are connected to one Intel iMac via USB.
We have 2 other Macs - one iMac G5, and Mac mini G5 which are sharing these printers. All have the latest Tiger OS 10.4.6.
They print fine, but the problem we're having is that the 2 computers which are using the printers via the network do not have access to Epson's special utilities when in the print dialogue screen - ie: they cannot change the print quality, paper stock, black vs colour etc. when just about to print.
The only one that does have access to Epson's controls is the one which is connected via USB.
We also can not see the printers from the other 2 macs in the Printer Browser when searching for them using appletalk, or epson appletalk etc....only in the Default Browser as "Shared Printers"
Does this have something to do with it?
How can we get the 2 Macs which are using the printers as "shared printers" access to the epson print options?
    thanks!
Intel iMac, iMac g5, Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Are your printers "networked" as in using ethernet, or are they simply shared, using the OSX shared printers feature? I think it makes a difference.
I had a similar problem. My printer, an Epson 1280 is connected to mu iMac G4 via USB, and is shared by my MacBook Pro. I was unable to access the Epson print utility features that allow setting quality, borderless prints, etc. I contacted Epson and they sent me the following fix. it took care of the problem. I can change the settings from either the primary iMac or from the shared printer on the Laptop.
To correct the issue you are experiencing, we will perform a complete
removal of the files and reinstall the driver.
    REMOVE FILES
    1. Double click on the MAC HARD DRIVE
    2. Double click on the LIBRARY folder
    3. Double click on the PRINTERS folder
    4. Drag the EPSON folder to the trash can
NOTE If you receive an access denied error message, this indicates that
you do not have root access. You will need to contact Apple for assistance
    on obtaining Root Access.
    1. Insert your 10.4 CD/DVD, double click on the CD/DVD icon on your
    desktop.
    2. Double click SYSTEM > INSTALLATION > PACKAGES > EPSON PRINTER
    DRIVERS.PKG
Follow the prompts for the installation, restart your Mac when complete
Please follow the steps below to install the resident driver for your
    printer in OS 10.4:
    1. Make sure that your printer is turned on and connected to your computer.
    2. Open your PRINTER SETUP UTILITY. This is found in HARD DRIVE,
    APPLICATIONS, UTILITIES directory
    3. If there are any entries for your printer click on them and hit the
DELETE. Once they are all gone Click ADD, then MORE PRINTERS at the bottom
    of the printer browser.
    4. In the window that appears, select EPSON USB from the drop-down menu at
the top, then highlight your printer when it appears under NAME , under
PAGE SETUP select ALL, and then hit ADD.
    5. Quit out of the printer setup utility and try printing from any OS X
    application.
To set up your printer for borderless printing in OS X please follow the
    steps below.
After you have installed your printer driver for OS 10, you will need to do
the following to add extra paper features such as borderless printing
    options:
    1. Go to Printer Setup Utility (found in HD > Applications > Utilities).
Delete any existing references to the Epson printer from the list.
    2. Go to Add. Select Epson USB for a USB printer or Epson Firewire for a
    Firewire-connected printer.
    3. Highlight the printer name when it appears under Product. Under "Page
setup" use the up-down arrows and select ALL.
    4. Click Add. The new printer options will now be added to the Printer
list; you will see the printer name numerous times with different paper
selections attached. (If you are unable to see the full description you
will need to extend the name category.)
    5. Highlight the printer name/feature which you wish to use (For example,
"Stylus Photo 2200 (Sheet feeder-Borderless)") and make it the default.
    Close Printer Setup Utility.
    6. Ensure Classic is not running. Open an OS X application and the file you
    wish to print.
Setting up borderless prints in an OS X application (NOTE: not all
    applications will show these options)
    1. Click on FILE and PAGE SETUP. Ensure the settings below are adjusted:
    SETTINGS: PAGE ATTRIBUTES
FORMAT FOR: EPSON STYLUS XXX XXX(BORDERLESS)
PAPER SIZE: Whichever compatible paper size you wish to use
(NOTE: borderless printing is not supported on custom paper sizes.)
    Click OK when done.
    2. Click on FILE and PRINT. Ensure the settings below are adjusted:
    PRINTER: Stylus XXX XXX(BORDERLESS)
    PRESETS: STANDARD
Make any other adjustments needed (on COPIES and PAGES, PRINT SETTINGS,
    etc) and then click PRINT.
    Good Luck!

I am trying to manage family sharing and I get a warning "invalid apple ID"  accounts can participate in one Family at a time.  How can I add my daughter when I can't even access my account?

Your best bet would be to try resetting the password to the account that you would like to use via iForgot
Once you log in to that account change the email address to anything, it can even be fake its just a placeholder
After you do that you will be free to change your old email address on your appleID to the new one that is now free to be used as it is no longer attached to the other account.
