Can't create Ramdisk larger tham 16M

Hi Archers,
I am trying to create a ramdisk but can't create ramdisk higher than 16MB. If I create a ramdisk smaller tham 16MB, everything is ok, but if I create higher, I got the following error:

I've never made a ramdisk that way, I always make an entry in fstab with the size:

Note the size=1g option
I would like to create a Ramdis such as /dev/ram0 so that I can mount and unmount it without losing my data. with tmpfs, after unmount, all my data will be erased.

  • How can I create projects larger than 7GB?

I want to creat a project and it will be very large... over 10GB. I know that because I finnished only two thirds of it and it already 7GB size (I get the warnning message all the time)
Is there any way to create a larger projects? I dont want to burn it on a disc... I just want to save it as an image file, and play it from there...
If there's a way to make my project smaller so it can fit a Dual-Layer disc will also be a bless...
    Thank you all!!

Yes. It is not the size in GB of your project. I have had many projects that were between 60 and 100 GB, but under the time lime.
It is theTIME limitation that iDVD is complaining about to you. A single-layer DVD can hold 120 minutes of content, including menus and submenus. A double-layer DVD can hold twice that much, 240 minutes total. Your project exceeds the capacity of even a double-layer DVD because it is too long to burn on one DVD.
To burn DVDs with that many minutes, you will need to split your project and burn it to two DVDs, so that each part is not longer than 240 minutes total time. This is the same for creating disk image files. They cannot exceed the total time limits.
I have seen reports of supercompressing data using Toast, so that you can fit more content onto a disk, but I have not used it this way, and I think you are probably trying to put too much onto one disk even for Toast. Maybe others have done this and can give your their experiences with Toast's limitations.

You are able to define a media geometry that is independent of the media geometry in your presently registered printer.
If you define a media geometry that is larger than the media geometry in your presently registered printer, the system lets you scale down the media geometry.
The media geometry scales as a whole - you can specify the scaling manually or you can let the system compute the scaling (fit once, fit twice - called two up, fit four times - called four up, etc.).
You cannot set multiple origins within the media geometry and manually tile the larger media geometry onto the smaller media geometry supported in your presently registered printer.
This is a limitation of Apple's implementation and not of the underlying printing model.

  • Can I create a large slideshow in Aperture?

I have about 800 photos I want to make a slideshow in Aperture3.3, add audio, theme. Can this be done, or should I split it up? In the past in iPhoto, iDVD, I have had problems getting large projects to process, they seem to stall. I just recently purchased Aperture, this is my first project. I have USB thumb drive 8GB to transfer the Slideshow to, will this be a problem? I was told I could drag and drop the slideshow to the thumbdrive. We were on a long trip with friends and I want to give this to them as a gift. Thank you for your answer.

Can I suggest that if you're making a large slideshow then you might be best working in iMovie or a dedicated Slideshow app. You'll have much more fine control over what happens - especially with the sound track and the timings.
    Alternatives to Aperture's slideshow include:
    iMovie, on every Mac sold.
Others, in order of price: PhotoPresenter  $29
    PhotoToMovie  $49.95
    PulpMotion  $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
    Final Cut Pro X $299
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs. However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Pro X is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.

  • Can i create a large number of identical tabs?

I have searched around and found nothing on the topic.. what i am looking at here is this.
I have currently set up two tabs that are identical, each representing a component on a device and the component is selected when the user clicks on the tab.
For example, if i switch to tab two, i select component two.
Now these tabs are identical, same controls same indicators and so on.. what i want to know is if it is possible to make it so that say.. if i tell it i have 5 components, it would show 5 identical tabs. if i told it it had 20 components it would bring up 20 and so on. At the moment i am looking at having to create each tab one by one and then hiding them..
Thanks for your time and any help at all is greatly appreciated

altenbach--this problem could be phrased a little more generally though:  some, but not all types of controls could appear on each tab, while other controls are unique to particular tabs.  I've encountered exactly this situation, and I don't have a good way to duplicate the exact location of the common controls on each tab.  Can "copy and paste" be done "in place" somehow?
Using altenbach's approach would be best. If you have a handful of specific controls but most are common you can control this by showing/hiding control. When the user selects the type of device you could show/hide the controls which are not common to all. Using this approach you could place controls on top of each other as long as only one would be visible at a time. This saves on diagram space and gives you a clean interface. Internally you use an array of clusters. If you may have different clusters you can decide if the differences are significant enough to warrant using different cluster definitions or simply having a few parameters that do not apply to all devices included in a single cluster definition. The controls on the front panel itself do not need to be in a cluster since they are only there for the UI. This gives you a bit more freedom in laying out the front panel. Anything that uses typedefs (ENUMs for example) should share the same typedef though.
If you feel very ambitious and think you may reuse this control in several applications you could implement this as an X-Control.

  • Can I create a large network with 2 WRT900N routers & 2 live ethernet ports 80 ft apart.

I have a main cable modem in the cellar and from there it splits with one LAN line going to one end of the house and the other LAN going to the other. I have two wireless routers (WRT900N). Yes, I know I can connect one WRT900N to another WRT900N through their LAN ports. That being said, can't I do this some other way? It would make sense that with two live LAN CAT-5 plug-ins, two top end routers, that I should be able to do it. That being said, the only feedback I am getting is to go and return one of the routers and buy a couple of access points (although the reviews on the WRT900N repeaters are not so flattering) but this does not make any sense to me. thanks for anyone's help!

Are you sure that it is WRT900N ??
    I think it is WRT600N !!

    - If the Gmail accounts are IMAP one then if the library is erased and then you use the account old email will be redownload
    - Easing the library on the MacBook does not effect what is on the iMac. On the other hand if you deleted the messages in the Mail app on the MacBook then they will deleted from all devices.

Can i create AIF or WAV files larger then 4 gig?  It seems like I have been doing that all along, but suddenly FCPX and Compressor 4 will not allow me to create and AIF file bigger then 4gig.  It claims that the file format does not support sizes above 4

    Hi...
per def. WAV 32bit does not support larger files than 4GB (sometimes 2GB).
You can use the BroadCast WAV format. Which will enable that.
However, if the destination format (Your final movie you wanna export to in Compressor and Fcpx) is WAV and not broadcast WAV it wont work due to the 4GB limit.
    Aiff is limited as well.

It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.
    https://www.apple.com/au/support/homesharing/
For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less.

    Any help is appreciated.

You can use either CR or WebI.
In CR Designer create the report using the SAP toolbar (Create report from query) based on the 1st BEx query. Then use the Database expert (first entry in the Database menu) to add an additional connection to your 2nd BEx query (+Create new connection->SAP BW DX query). You can then join the results of the 2 different queries in the database expert also.. Please note that if you do NOT want to join the result sets, then it is more efficient to use subreports. Create two different CR reports, each based on one of the BEx queries and then use one of those as your main report and insert the other one into it as subreport. Once embedded you do not have to keep the separate .rpt file of your second report.
For Webi you must build 2 universes, each based on one of your BEx queries. In your report you can add multiple queries based on different universes. You can join the results sets here by using the Merge dimensions button in the report editor area.
    Regards,
    Stratos
PS; Keep in mind that joining a large number of rows at report level (either in CR or WebI) can cause performance problems. If this is your requirement, how many rows do you expect to get back from each individual query?

  • How can I view my photos in "Events" like in iPhoto? How can I create events?  I have 55,000 photos and 1700 events so the only way I can possibly manage my photos is using events that are one slide in size.

I have 55,000 images organized into about 1700 events. The only reasonable way to view my library is using events in iPhoto where each event has one image That still leaves 1700 images to sort through but that is a lot easier than 55,000 images.  In the side bar is a folder with "iPhoto Events" but those views still show all of the slides.  How can I create events and view my photos as events as in iPhoto?  Events are critical for large libraries and has been my primary way to sort images.
    Thanks!

I had a problem a couple of months ago when iPhotos suddenly rearranged the order of my Events (Why won't iPhoto let me arrange my photos?) .  I was told "Use albums not events - events are not a good way to organize - albums and folder are designed for organisation and are very flexible".
Haha!  I should have paid attention and read between the lines!  My iPhotos were highly organised groupings - not according to date but the way I wanted them - and it was so easy to do!  I see now that if I had them all in albums, as per the Apple Apologist suggestion, I wouldn't have this unholy mess I have been left with just to make iPhone & iCloud users happy.  I am now going through Photos and making Albums (of what used to be in my Events)  ... maybe I'll get this finished before they do another non user friendly update!

  • How can I create a dynamic XML driven PDF Portfolio?

I have built an XML application for which I maintain a library of individual PDF page "templates" used to assemble large (1000+ pages) PDF documents. The page templates are saved as PDFs without page numbers as they can be reused anywhere in any manual, the page numbers are applied during the document assembly process. I am now attempting to implement an update process, in which one template change can impact dozens of large documents. I am therefore looking at moving away from creating these large PDF documents and creating something more along the lines of a Package, Portfolio or other solution in which document pages/templates in the library are linked to rather than combined, so that changes across multiple large documents can be done quickly and transparently to the user. I am sure there is a solution using an Adobe spec like Portfolio or XDP, I just need a nudge down the right path, as nothing in what I've read explicitly states that these technologies can be used for this purpose. I would prefer to stay within technologies I am comfortable with to create/modify the necessary files, whcih are XML/XSLT and ANT. I would also like to know if it's possible to add page numbers on the footer of each page in the Portfolio without modifying the template, and if the resulting Portfolio can be saved as a normal PDF or printed with the dynamic page numbers included.
I know this might be a tall order but if anyone can help clarify what's possible with existing Adobe technologies it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Keith

Indeed - PDF Portfolios are a collection of static files attached to a one-page cover sheet, you cannot have references to externally-stored documents.
You can replace individual files in a Portfolio (by adding a file of the same name) but nothing happens automatically, and the file when added to the Portfolio will have no idea about where it originally came from. There's no concept of "check for updates".

  • How many users/ schemas can we create in an oracle database?

How many users can we create in an oracle database? Or how many users can oracle handle?
    Problem-
I have to store information of ontologies (I will use countries instead) in db.
I have to store information regarding countries.
I have 13 tables in all to maintain for each country.
    Now there are two approaches:
    1) keep only 13 tables. Have an extra column in each table to indicate that a particular
row stores information for which country.
    2) create a new user/ schema for each country. So we can get rid of the extra column
    needed in 1st approach.
I have used the second approach. This is because number of entries in each table for a
    given country will be large.
So initially when the s/w is installed I create a central-user. Each time data for new
country has to be entered central-user creates a user/ schema, and creates tables for
this user/ schema. The central user can access the tables of all the countries by
country_name.table_name. By this approach I believe searching would be easy.
If there is any flaw in my approach kindly mention it.
    Thank you

There is no (practical at least) limit to the number of users & schemas you can have in Oracle.
Your approach, however, is not going to scale nearly as well as the first option you outlined (adding a column). You are going to end up caching every possible variation of the various queries you're going to be executing because you will be referring to so many different tables, which is going to mean that you are doing a lot more work to parsing statements and generally churning through the shared pool. If you create enough users, you're liable to start hitting ORA-04030 errors because your shared pool is so fragmented.
Additionally, you're likely going to end up with a whole lot of dynamically generated SQL to accommodate new schemas getting added over time which is going to cause you even more pain. Figuring out dynamically what table to join in is a heck of a lot more difficult for the programmer to write and for the database to handle than simply passing in a different country code.
If you're concerned about having too much data, you can have your cake and eat it to by adding the country column and partitioning the tables based on country.
    Justin
One other item I forgot to mention is maintainability. Having dozens or hundreds of "identical" schemas makes maintenance a huge pain because something like adding a new column now requires dozens or hundreds of separate DDL statements. You're almost guaranteed that some schema isn't going to be in sync-- it's going to miss a column or miss an index, etc.

  • Can I create a PDF document that can be commented on by others using READER

I have dozens (hundreds?) of PDF Books that I've purchased. Whoever created them made them so anyone using Adobe Reader 5 or better can make highlights and comments on the text.  I use the feature to correct typos and send them back to the publisher. I know it can be done because I've been doing it for a few years before I ever got Adobe Standard.
So . . . My question is . . . How can I create documents like this that can be commented on using Adobe Reader? I have Adobe Standard 8 and I don't see this as a separate feature of Adobe Pro. and I'm hoping that I'm just missing the instructions on how it's done. I do not have any problem doing what I want using Adobe Standard 8 but I need to be able to make it doable in Reader so others can make comments in my documents.
Thanks for taking the time . . .
    thehapster

"Enable Usage Rights in Adobe Reader" or "Extend Features in Adobe Reader"
are available with Acrobat 8 Professional / 3D version 8 or Acrobat Professional / Pro Extended respectively.
Additionally, Adobe provides a server based service (LiveCycle ES) that "enables/extends" a PDF such that Adobe Reader can  be used for Comment, Review, Digital Signature, etc.
That you can use Adobe Reader to comment on PDFs means one of the above applications were used.
Because you have mentioned the PDFs are purchased PDF Books I suspect that LiveCycle ES was used.
This server based application (which has a myriad of "modules" available) is expensive so, typically, it is licensed by enterprises that need its functionality. Examples: the large publishing houses or governmental agencies (e.g., IRS).
If you move up to Acrobat Professional you will be able to "Extend Features in Adobe Reader" such that others can perform Comment & Review on your PDF documents.
As Acrobat 9.x is the current, marketed release the Professional version would be available to you via an upgrade (not to be confused with the free "updates").

  • Leopard to Snow Leopard can i use a large flash drive to backup first?

I've been using Leopard for 4 years with no problems.
Since Google decided to stop support for Leopard, and I use Chrome a lot I decided to upgrade.  I won't be upgrading to Mountain Lion right right away. I ordered my Snow Leopard disks from Apple.
I understand that I need to backup.  I want to backup with Time Machine before I upgrade the OS, but I don't have $75+ right now to purchase an external hard drive for this purpose only.
Can I use a large Flash Drive to run Time Machine?  Like a 32 GB?   I know that flash drives have a limited number of writes on them and can go bad, so I am thinking I could just use it this one time to make sure I have a clean backup.  If this is possible, then can I set up Time Machine again later when I have an external drive?
Also, I have 2 cores on my Mac, but I have no idea how to use the 2nd core.
I'm also not sure if I need to purchase a specific external drive because I have a mac.
    Thanks for the help.

If you only need to make a full backup prior to upgrading, I would suggest using SuperDuper, which for creating a full, bootable clone is free. (It is not free when you start needing to make incremental backups, but you won't be doing that, at least not right now.) For a bootable clone, you only need a Flash drive (or external drive) as big as the total size of the utilized space on your hard drive right now, not as big as whatever the entire drive size is.
In the past, I would have recommended Carbon Copy Cloner for this, but it's no longer free or donation-ware and you don't have the budget for both that and some kind of external or Flash drive.
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
You might also want to look around newegg.com for inexpensive USB external drives, or even large enough Flash drives. You'll probably find a much less expensive external hard drive than a Flash drive for this purpose.
You do not need to use Time Machine, but even if you did you could just make one full backup to a Flash or external drive and then unmount and disconnect it. An external for TM only needs to be so large because it's constantly taking snapshots of your drive and those add up. But you won't be using it that way.
Anyway, I think you're much better off with a bootable clone, should you need to restore that.
Don't worry about having 2 cores; that's nothing to do with backing up.
