Can't enter Time Machine on a remote Mini

Using ARD 3.2.2 on a MacBook Pro (10.5.5), I'm able to access (control, send files, etc.) a Mini (10.5.5, ARD 3.2.2/firewall is off). However, while controlling this remote machine, the control session sort of freezes up after I enter Time Machine on that Mini.
After pressing esc, I regain control of the Mini.
Why can't I see Time Machine?

Hi ...
Been having the same problem with my colocated MacMini @ macminicolo.net. But with some help from the tech there, he gave me a great solution. We tried using the VGA adapter that came with the Mini & rebooting, but that didn't do the trick. He then remembered that some of his Unix box customers sent him a custom made dummy VGA adapter that worked for them. He had a spare one. We tied it and it worked like a champ. I was able to get into Time Machine remotely for the first time since setting it up ... and see all the graphics and buttons in TM correctly.
Here is the URL < <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://tvtool.info/go.htm?http://tvtool.info/english/dummy_e.htm > to the article on how to build your own adapter. All you need is a VGA connector, its housing and three 75 Ohms resistors. A little soldering & you're done.
I'm off to Radio Shack to get the parts right now.
Hope this helps.

  • Multiple Yosemite woes: programs won't start, can't enter Time Machine, etc.

    Hello Linc et al.,
I have been having Yosemite problems similar to those discussed elsewhere (e.g. iMac 27" late 2013 and Yosemite) (albeit with 10.10.1, Mid-2010 MacBook Pro): can't enter Time Machine, although it seems to be backing up; programs including Illustrator, EndNote, and Boinc don't start, or only after an hour or two (others, including Microsoft Office, seem okay). They will start normally in safe mode, but not for a newly created user. Many permission repairs carried out (seems okay except for a couple recurring printer-related messages), disk is okay, PRAM and SMC reset. Spent some time with various tech support, so most of these have been tried several times.
The solution here com.apple.xpc.launchd & com.apple.mdworker.bundles pollute logs with errors worked through one restart - there were two mystery uids, owning many files - but not through a second.
I have followed the permission repair procedure from another post (discussions.apple.com/message/27015992#27015992); the initial return was 639, and now it is 0. Restarted since then, nothing appeared to change.
Below is what I get from the test suggested in the first thread mentioned, I hope there is something informative here! I'll study it myself, but don't know what might or might not matter.
    Thanks,
    Barbara

    Thanks,
    Barbara

  • Can't enter time machine if switched off

I have been using TimeMachineEditor for years to get only backup a day. But, after finally moving my previous backup to my new time capsule, I find that I can't enter time machine unless it is turned on in system preferences. This never happened before and I'm wondering if anyone knows why. The editor only works (although it isn't working at all at the moment) if time machine is turned off.

Thanks for the reply and I'm thinking that you are right that Time Machine is just buggy. I do have the latest version of the editor and I don't think the editor is at fault. I just did a backup, I think, but when I enter Time Machine it goes into waiting mode which means it can't find the backup even though the Time Capsule is mounted on my desktop. When I try double clicking on the file in the finder, it tells me that Disk Image can't find the resource. Later it will likely work again.
I bought the Time Capsule because I was wary of using a third party networked drive any longer since it erased all my backups a month ago and started over. But it looks like Time Capsule is no better and may even be worse at the moment.

  • Can't enter Time Machine

New MacBook Pro, OS X v10.7.2. I can't enter Time Machine. I've been backing up regularly to my external drive, plugged directly into my Mac. It seems to be backing up just fine. I try to Enter Time Machine, and nothing happens. No error message, and obviously no Time Machine. Without an error message, I can't figure out what to fix. Ideas?

Restarting fixed it. I tried it after following a More Like This thread. I swear I looked before I posted! Thanks, dannyson, for posting and fixing the same issue.

  • Time Machine - can not 'Enter Time Machine'

Back ups seem to prepare and progress and complete successfully and are visible on the TM Drive.
Everything worked fine, and then one day, I can not remember if there was anything I did or installed that may have changed this, as one does not know to check it all the time, other than to see the cool transition...
When I click on 'Enter Time Machine' or on the TM Icon in the dock, The screen flashes once, a window of desktop contacts flashes once, and then finder restarts with nothing having happened. It does not enter the Time Machine GUI.
I have searched high and low on discussions, no-one seems to have encountered this before. What can I do ? Anyone seen this , Any Ideas ?

Oh dear, no response to my post.
Mmmmm how will i ever get time machine to work again ?
I don't want to re-install the Mac Os.
you don't want to but you might have to. I've never seen anything like what you describe. you can try reselecting the TM drive in TM preferences and see if that does anything (I expect not). you can also try setting up TM with a different drive and doing a full backup. see if it works there. if it doesn't, I don't see any options besides reinstalling.
P.S. do you have any antivirus software? use Filevault?

  • Can't "Enter Time Machine" on an older G4

I just installed 10.5.5 on an older G4 tower (AGP Graphics). The G4's original 350 or 400 MHz CPU has been replaced with a 1.2 GHz CPU. 10.5.5 and Time Machine backup are working without a whimper.
However, when I attempt to Enter Time Machine, the frontmost Finder window changes size, and a copy of the window appears in the center of the screen. But Time Machine's star-field background and the bottom and right side controls do not appear.
My guess is Time Machine wants more graphic power than the built-in ATI Rage 128 Pro.
I don't care about Time Machine's fancy graphics. I just want to be able to find and restore files. What can I do?

I am having the same problem with my MacBook Pro (512 MB VRAM GeForce) when I try to restore my mail. I have only the Mail.app window above my desktop without the Dock and Menu bar showing. I can't do anything else except pressing the escape key to exit time machine mode. I don't have this problem when restoring other files.
So, I don't think it's a graphics problem but I couldn't figure it out. I just discovered the problem today and didn't find any solutions on the internet.

  • Can not enter time machine

I'm able to make backups but when I click "Enter Time Machine" or if I try to go to Applications-> Time Machine... nothing happens. I need to restore a malfunctioning application and I really need to figure out why this won't work. I appreciate any guidance.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    As Guest, test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on some Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

I have a new mac book pro/LION and can't access my back up data when I click on "enter time machine".  I need the back up data that I could access on my old mac book pro (that is now broken). I can only access time machine  back up data that I've obtained since starting the new mac book pro.  Tnx so much

Try doing a click-and-hold on the Time Machine icon in the Dock, then select "Browse Other Time Machine Disks".

  • HT3275 Why can't I enter time machine?

Why can't I enter time machine?

There are lots of possible reasons.. without more info we cannot help.
What OS is on the Mac?
Is this a new setup and has never worked? Or an old setup that has stopped working?
Is mavericks involved at all? Did you clean install or upgrade install it?
What is the target device for Time Machine?

  • Can the time machine be accessed remotely over the internet?

Hi, I am thinking about purchasing the time machine. Can the hard drive on the time machine be accessed remotely over the internet?

Do you realize that if you store some of your Mac's data (photos, music, etc.) ONLY  on the external Time Capsule, AND also  store your "Time Machine" app "system backups" on the Time Capsule, then if the Time Capsule hard drive ever fails you will have lost the " original" and the "backup" copies of all that data  (photos, music, etc.)?  They will be gone forever.  NOT recommended!

  • Entering Time Machine using Screen Sharing

I use a G4 as a filserver, thus it does not need a monitor, and is just stacked under a desk. Now I want to use Time Machine backup for my files. That works.
To enter Time Machine to retrive a file, I need to use Screen Sharing. But Time Machine does not render correctly! I can see that its on - and trying, but no universe, and no buttons or stacked finder windows.. Anyone?

My Intel MacBookPro could run Time machine remotly on my PowerPC G5
But none could run it on the PowerPC G4.
So I wonder whats the logic..

  • How can I use Time Machine with my existing network attached storage drives

I am a new mac user switching over from windows and have an extensive amount of existing equipment including 2 network attached storage devices (Buffalo Technologies). I would like to use these with Time Machine, but can not figure out how to do it. When I enter time machine setup it does not show these drives while the Finder does.

As of right now we are all SOL unless you own a Time Capsule. At the very least I wish apple would offer some kind of trade-up if they are not going to release a software update.
It really doesn't make any sense why we can't do this with a standard AEBS. Any fix should just be a matter of software, and while technically apple covered its butt with that little "subject to change" disclaimer on the leopard preview page, pulling it at the last minute and expecting those who believed their advertisement to buy another device that does the exact same thing for more money is just wrong. Give us a break apple, tell us your at least working on a fix, its the right thing to do.

  • How can I use time machine to recover my iWeb09 files?

I read that iWeb stores one's website pages in the domain folder which can be located at ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb. Can I use time machine to recover my iWeb09 files? If so, how? -I tried. I entered my Time Machine back up, and went back in time and brought the domain file forward but it opened only my current site pages, not the ones I am trying to recover. And it says the Domain file was last modified in October 2007 which is crazy because I've been using iWeb a lot and have published many pages. It seems like the uncorrupted pages, which I am trying to recover, existed somewhere on my computer at one point in time and space, less than a week ago, becuse I just published my site to a new hosting service since Apple will soon stop web hosting. So why can I not find them using time machine?

I continued searching and read another person's advise to down load an app named "Find File," then search for .sites. She said spotlight doesn't always find all files. So I did and sure enough, when I searched for .sites I found another Domain package, which I have no idea how it was created but which, it ends up, was the one actually being used by iWeb. So I went to that package then did the time machine and went back to before my web pages became corrupted. I had to delete corrupt blog pages out of my website menu to get iWeb to upload the other page changes even to a local folder.
So I went to that newly found Domain, went back in time, then brought that forward and as you pointed out the domain package had the parts of the pages, the files and jpegs, but not the structure/layout of the pages. So, I guess I gave up on finding the old pages.
Those pages still exist on the Apple hosting server but iWeb doesn't not reverse publication. Cyberduck would bring back the files and bits and peices but again not the pages as a total entity. I'm preparing for the end of Apple website hosting (next month?) and am republishing my old site. I decided to use a new domain name. So my entire original site is still totally intact on the web under the original domain name, on my mobile me site, I guess it will be there till sometime in June?
My problems started when I tried to publish my website to the new server. It just would not publish the whole website in one session. So I decided to do it a few pages at a time. Some pages went up, but as I added more, for some unknown reason the, blog pages, (about 70 subpages),  which had aleardy uploaded just fine to the new server, became corrupt and locked up iWeb. Of course once I deleted the corrupt pages I didn't want to continue publishing the site to the host until I found and reinserted uncorrupted pages, knowing publishing changes would delete the already published pages.
At first I thought it was the hosting server's fault, but when I discovered that it wouldn't publish even to a local fold I was able to locate the cause within iWeb, deleted those pages then tested by publishing to a local folder. iWeb worked locally, so I knew I had found the problem pages. Well this is way more than you wanted to know. Thanks for your advise but I'll just start the blogging pages over.
