Can't get Airport to work on PowerMac G4-533, yet it's recognized...

I have a PowerMac G4-533 machine with 256 Mb ram. I've tried installing an Airport card into the machine and cannot locate any wireless networks with Airport turned on. I even tried swapping Airport cards between this machine and my G3-600, and find that the problem is not with the Airport card (newly acquired card works great in the G3). Other interesting tidbit is that when I do an "About this machine", I can select the networking line and see the MAC address of the Airport card currently plugged in, along with being told it's IEEE80211, port en1, in DHCP mode, Auto, Node, 1 (rest of info on this port). Yet when I run the network diagnostics, Airport is not an active port even though it is turned on.
Any thoughts? Could I have a bad system? I bought this from a reseller and have a few days left.
There's no problem with running a rather long ethernet cable temporarily, but I don't want to go this way.

Found out what the problem was -- the antenna connector going to the airport card was
"crushed". The service tech where I got the G4 found the problem, used some tools and
reshaped the connector back to normal. I am now able to find my own wireless net (and the
others in the neighborhood).

  • Can't get AirPort Express working with TIOD on iPad

    Hi All,
I realise this is not the support forum for TIOD, but not having been able to find such a thing or a response from their Facebook page, I'm asking here in the hope that someone else has encountered and overcome this issue.
I'm trying to connect our iPad 2 to the AirPort Extreme's shared disk. On the iPad I'm using TIOD 1.7. That's according to the AppStore, the app itself seems not to display specific version information. Everything else around here successfully connects to the Airport Extreme, and the iPad successfully connects to shared Windows folders. However, I haven't been able to connect the iPad to the AirPort Extreme.
The iPad successfully connects to the AirPort Extreme WiFi network, but I haven't been able to successfully log on at the TIOD prompt when connecting to the disk. The AirPort Extreme disk security is configured for disk password with read-only guest. I've tried logging in with only the disk password, and also with only the guest username and no password.
I've also changed disk security to device password, and I've also configured user accounts and tried them all with TIOD without success.
I've left a message on TIOD's Facebook page and emailed the address given on their web site without response so far.
I'll be really grateful for any suggestions to overcome this problem.
Failing all else, I'll appreciate suggestions for a simple, reliable app to:
browse the secured AirPort Extreme disk
view files and play media (including media that the iPad doesn't natively support - i.e. app includes own player)
    copy files to/from iPad
    Quite a mouthful, but I'm hopeful .
    Many thanks,
    Francois

I have a similar problem. I have both a MacBook Pro and iBook; for quite a while both were working with the Linksys router. However, I had a crash with the MacBook Pro and began having increasing problems using Airport to connect. It has stopped working entirely; I have to connect via ethernet. I thought maybe changing the network name and password would help because it always said I was using an invalid password when I tried to join the network. The iBook connected without problems to the new network; however, the MacBook still refuses to accept the password even though it is correct.
Internet Connect says that the computer is connected to the network and shows a strong signal; however, it always says that there was a problem joining. It cannot get access to ISP or to the local network.
I tried to configure the IP address to the router manually (the router says that the computer is connected also and I used that address). It seems that there is something screwed up in the airport software on the MacBook. I haven't tried to connect to a public network since the trouble started so don't know if the problem is only restricted to my router.
    Any experts with ideas?

  • Can't get Airport Express to work with Windows

I got a used Airport Express to use as a wireless print server. I got only the Airport Express; no manuals or CD's or anything. I have been reading through the manuals and everything online, but I can't get anything to work. It seems like I need to get the Airport Express Assistant, but I can't find it. I got the Airport Admin Utility, and that installed fine on Windows Vista. Then I installed what I thought was the Express Assistant, and it just seemed to change the Airport software in the start menu, but I still don't have the Assistant, only the Admin Utility. Anyway, I open the Admin Utility and it opens the Base Station Chooser. There is nothing there, so I rescan, and it seems to do nothing. It doesn't find anything anyway.
Where do I go from here? I am kind of stuck. I am trying this on a Windows Vista PC which is hardwired to a Linksys WRTSL54GS router. I have the airport express plugged in and the light is flashing Amber. I have a HP psc2410 plugged into the airport express that I would like to print wirelessly to.
    Thanks for any help.

You don't necessarily need the AirPort Setup
Assistant, you should be able to set up the AirPort
Express Base Station (AX) with the AirPort Admin
Utility...as it is a much more powerful tool. You
need to make sure that you are using the version for Windows. At this
time, the AirPort software is only supported for
Windows 2000 or XP. A Vista-version has not been
    released.
    I suggest the following...
    - First, perform a "factory default" reset on the AX to get
it back to it's original "out-of-the-box" state.
    - Next, temporarily connect your computer directly,
using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port on the
AX during the set up phase.
    - Then set up the AX as a "wireless client."
I have this same problem. I have a Vista Windows notebook and I am trying to get airport working to play music wirelessly through my home stereo. The "base station chooser" software does nothing on my Vista notebook.
I used a friend's MacBook and was able to set up the airport as a client so I can see it listed in my Dlink router DHCP Client Table. The airport express box is plugged in, has a steady green light and everything looks good except there is no option to choose "computer" or "home stereo" speakers in my iTunes. i installed the airport express CD including the itunes it came with.
Any ideas how to get this working on vista? Previously i had the newer version of iTunes 7.1 installed and the airport express CD told me it couldn't complete the install because a newer version of iTunes was installed. I uninstalled the iTunes and reinstalled the CD including the iTunes version 4.

  • Using airport extreme in china - can't get it to work

I just moved to china and have been trying to set up a new Airport Extreme dual band to my high speed internet connection but can't get it to work (bought the AE in the US and worked fine there). I have a Green light on the physical AE, and in Network Status section under Network Diagnostics I get green lights on Airport, Network Settings and ISP, but yellow/red on Internet and Server. The type of internet connection is direct, supplied by China Telecom with no router/modem in my unit, but with ethernet cable running directly to the phone room connection. I manually set up the AE using the same IP address, subnet, DNS as shows up when I plug the ethernet cable directly into my computer, with the internet working fine with a direct connection to computer and no AE.

What you did makes complete sense Mike, but if you don't have access to the router you may have to get your ISP to recognize your Extreme's MAC address:
AirPort Base Station: ISP provisioning may prevent Internet connection via broadband (cable or DSL)
For example: Suppose that you have a computer connected to a cable modem before purchasing an AirPort Base Station. Your Internet service provider might recognize your computer's MAC address as the correct one for your account. Your new base station then takes the position on your network that was formerly occupied by your computer, but you have not taken any action to let your Internet service provider (or its hardware) know the new address. The base station then sends packets to your Internet service provider that do not contain the required MAC address, and the packets are ignored.
It may be as simple as leaving everything disconnected from your service provider for a period of time. You might also try turning Connection Sharing "off" (bridge mode).

i have an airport extreme attached to cable, then one airport express to extend the range. when i try to add an additional airport express to extend range in another area of house, can't get it to work. utility says it has found a new base station and asks if i want to use it. if i click yes, then the old setup is disabled.

Ok, thanks for clarifying which models you have. Please see the following Apple Support article on how to configure these older base stations for a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).

  • Can't Get Airport Express To Work With ATT's Uverse

For years, AE worked just fine with my 2Wire portal streaming music to my stereo. Went to Uverse 2 months ago, and AE quit working. I am not using an Airport base station, just the Uverse modem and I need help getting it to work.
There is nothing in this forum when I search for uverse, so I post this in hope someone can help me.
I reset AE it and it finally appeared in Airport utility with a yellow light. I click configure and when I choose to join my current network, it sets up it's own Apple network, removing it from Airport utility and changing Airport status in Network to yellow.
No matter what I do or how I try, I just can't get AE to work with the stock 2Wire modem.
Has anyone been able to get AE to work with just the 2wire router & not have to buy an airport base station.
Any help is REALLY appreciated, as I wanna hear my Christmas music, and it's turning me into a Grinch!
    Thanks!

+However, it asks for the security and all I see is WEP in the Home Network set up, I don't know if it's 40 or 128+
AT&T set this up, so only they can tell you for sure. My guess would be WEP 128 since this type of security is stronger than WEP 40.
+And it asks for a wireless password. I entered the one from the router & it did not work. Tried the Key and it did not work.+
This is the same wireless password that you would use if you were logging on to your wireless network with your computer. But, unless you first have the exact, correct security setting for your 2wire router, the password will not work.
+Has anyone out there successfully got their Airport Express to work with Uverse????+
I don't provide instructions to anyone on the forum unless I've first done it myself. I'm providing you with the same instructions that I used to help a neighbor with his 2wire Uverse setup last week. It works fine.
But, he called AT&T to ask them what security setting they used on his 2wire router. Otherwise, we would have had to try each possible setting to see if we could make it work.
AT&T also told him that his password should be 13 characters, all lower case letters with no spaces. That is what the neighbor said he used. I cannot confirm this as he did not share his password with me.
AT&T may have set up the password criteria differently on your router. You need to confirm with them on this.
+What password goes in the Base station tab, Key or Password?+
Any password you want. This is a separate password simply to be able to access the settings on the device in the future when you are using AirPort Utility. You could use your wireless network password if you want.
Please post back on your progress.

I am having problems setting up airport extreme.
What ADSL modem do you advise to use with my new airport extreme? I have tried a basic TP-Link ADSL2+  modem and I can't get the configuration working. What modem does Apple recommend?

Ok well I have looked around some more and have found this to be the most up to date official response to my question as seen at this link here:
    http://www.actiontec.com/support/product_details.php?pid=41#q27
Can I Bridge the Actiontec MI424WR router that Verizon provided, when I signed up for FiOS service?
The MI424WR does not have a bridging option, and neither Verizon nor Actiontec support attempting to bridge it.
The desire to bridge the MI424WR is based on a misunderstanding that it is a modem as well as a router. Actiontec does produce DSL Gateways that have a Transparent-Bridging option, which bypasses or disables the router function and allows the Gateway to act simply as a DSL modem, when it is enabled. Many consumers do not realize that with FiOS, the ONT (typically outside the home) is the device that handles changing the FiOS signal from Fiber to either Ethernet or Coax, and that the Router is just a Router, and if it was bridged or bypassed, it would be a device without a function. For most Verizon FiOS customers their service would completely stop if the MI424WR was bridged, because the Video on Demand service is dependent on it to work.
If your ONT is connected to the Actiontec MI424WR router via Coax, the MI424WR is required due to the Coax connection. But if the ONT is connected to the MI424WR via Ethernet, then in most cases some other router can be substituted for the MI424WR, and it can be removed."
So it looks like I will be calling Verizon support to see about getting the Ethernet connection installed and getting another modem...

I can't get airport extreme to work with iPad

Ok, thanks for clarifying that for me. We have two distinctly different printing problems. Let's try tackling them one at a time if you don't mind.
In order for the iPad to print to a printer it would either have to be AirPrint-enabled or you would need another solution, like PrintCentral for iPad or Printopia. Unfortunately, I don't believe your Canon printer is AirPrint-enabled. There aren't many printers on the market that currently are. All of them, that I am aware of, are HP devices.
Now for the PC. I would go with what you have already suggested and that is try disabling either the Windows or third-party software firewall. Which version of Windows is it running? Just in case it's XP, here are two excellent iFelix articles on how to do so with or without using Bonjour.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

You are making some progress with setup of wireless network. Apparently there is reliability problem with the wireless connection. Perhaps you want to refer to following Apple support documents and start tweaking parameters in the router to improve the reliability. I used to have third-party routers such as Belkin and Netgear but switched to Apple Airport routers (Time Capsule then Airport Extreme for now) because of incompatibility issues whenever Apple upgrade Mac OS X. But since Apple develops Airplay protocol as alternative to Bluetooth for wireless audio/video streaming (with much better bandwidth) and must be deployed in any wireless network, there is no reason third-party routers not working for Airplay protocol.

  • Can't get Export to work in iPhoto 6.0

I can't get Export to work. I haven't been a big iPhoto user but just upgraded from ver. 2.0.1 to 6.0 four days ago. Never used export before; however, going through the '06 tutorial I have tried and failed several times (but dragging to the desktop works). I select a photo and File-->Export and the "Export Photos" dialog comes up. I hit the "File Export button at the top" per iPhoto Help. Nothing happens; the File Export pane remains blank. Hitting "Export" doesn't work either. Only the Cancel button works. I have a relatively small library: about 200 from before the upgrade and 100 imported using the new alias feature. Would appreciate any advice.

    Hi Walt,
did you use an iPhoto plugin before? Maybe you have an outdated flickr plugin that needs to be updated or disabled.
Do a "get info" on iPhoto.app and see if you have that installed.
The plugins are listed at the bottom of the "get info" panel

Port Forwarding.....or Port Mapping....as Apple calls it is a difficult and complex configuration method for most users. Because there are so many variables involved in this type of setup, it is not possible to provide a step by step guide that will work for everyone with all devices.
It is possible that a setup guide exists for the the WD drive and AirPort Extreme, but you will have to go looking for it on the Internet. Even if you find one, it may not be tailored to your specific situation or needs.
Sometimes, you can do everything right....at least according to someone's article or "how to" guide, and things still will not work correctly.
In situations like this, when you really don't know what to do, you need to enlist the aid of an IT pro, who will know what to do based on your particular products and unique circumstances. Sometimes....they won't be able to get things working either due to particular circumstances.
But, before you do this, I would strongly recommend that you use a Static IP address for your Internet connection with your ISP. If you do not have this now, contact them to ask them if they offer this type of connection. Expect to pay more for this type of service, of course.

  • Still can't get airplay to work!!!!!

Grrrrrrrrr. Still can't get airplay to work with either my iPad or my iPhone to my atv2. Everything has the latest firmware, including my airport extreme. Airplay is turned on in options on the atv2.
Everything is on the same network. I even switched networks but still nothing.
I do not see the blue icon that let's me stream to the tv.
What the heck am I doing wrong?

    Hi,
Your profile indicates you are running v10.5.7. If that's the case, you need to update your system software to v10.5.8 which is the minimum requirement for the iPad.
Click the Apple () menu then click: Software Update...
And make sure Bluetooth is not enabled on either the iPad or the iPhone. Tapping Settings / General / Bluetooth.

  • The air port on my imac went off and i can not get it to work

my air port on the imac weny off and i can not get it to work now

Apple used to use airport name for everything.. is this the internal wireless card?? Or external airport router?
If it is the internal wireless card, is it still listed in system profile.. and do a hardware test with your original CD.
    See http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
The problems with Mavericks are very great.. if you upgrade installed anything can happen.. a common feature is the internal wireless card fails to work.
Give details and we can figure it out.
