Can't get rid of Strange file in Trash

There is a strange file in my trash that i cant get rid of. It's called "␀␀␀õ␀␀.␀␀"
If i click get info on it the file disappears, but anytime i send a file into the Trash or open it up it reappears
Any help would be appreciated

this worked for me and I had the same file name as you described.
you must have win installed.
1. Open Terminal. It's located in /Applications/Utilities.

Type: chflags -R nouchg
Note: Type one space (not pictured) after nouchg in the line above, so that it ends in "nouchg ". Do not press Return yet.

2. Double-click the Trash icon in the Dock to reveal the contents of the Trash. If necessary, arrange the Finder window so that a portion of the Terminal window is still visible.
3. Press the Command-A key combination to select all files in the Trash.
4. Drag the files from the Trash to the Terminal window.
Note: This automatically enters the pathname for each file. This eliminates the need to individually empty multiple Trash directories, particularly when multiple disks or volumes are present.

5. Press Return. No special text message will be shown indicating that the command was successful.
6. Empty the Trash.
If the Trash does not empty or if you see a message in Terminal that says "usage: chflags [-R [-H | -L | -P]] flags file..." you most likely did not type the text in step 2 as indicated or did not leave a space. Repeat the steps if this happens.

  • Can't get rid of 'recovered file' in trash.

Please help. Every time I log in (I am the administrator), or restart, there is a recovered file in the trash which on opening contains 'EWSMacCompress.tar', decompress to 'EMSMac.framework' file containing, among other things, a 'EWSMac74' item 'Kind:Unix Excutable File (Universal).
I can empty the trash but it will return as a recovered file after each log in or restart. I think that it may be due to a remnant of a previously trashed program which I cannot locate.
I am a novice and would welcome any help from the more experienced.
    Thank you.
    iMac G5 20 2 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Thank you for your suggestions.
The problem is not with emptying the trash, that I can do.
After emptying the trash of the recovered file, 'spot light' search indicate that it and all associated data no longer exist.
The trash will remain empty until a restart or logged out; the file will return to the trash on restart or logged back in.
Perhaps someone can help identify the origin or author of the program 'EWSMacCompress.tar.gz', and I could get in touch with them to help with locating the problem area.

Back up all data, then boot from your recovery partition (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, select your startup volume, and run Repair Disk (not Repair Permissions.) If any problems are found, repeat. Then reboot as usual.

  • Can't get rid of a file

I have been trying to get rid of a file for a couple of weeks now. It's a very strange looking file that starts out with a bunch of symbols that I thought at first looked like Japanese but when I looked closer it seems like some sort of hieroglyphics or something. The file is dated December 1903. I've tried renaming it and I get error. I've tried dragging it out of the trash only to have it disappear and reappear later. I've tried many of the force empty trash techniques like holding down option and doing it. I even looked up some terminal commands. No luck. I've tried to use some of the disk utility programs available as well as the native Mac utilities but they don't work either. Can anyone offer me some help as to how to get rid of this file? It seems to be causing some problems when opening folders that are in my dock now and I'm starting to worry other things will start happening too. Thanks so much.

If so, create a new folder on your desktop and name it junk, and put the strange file in the new folder.
    Now, in a terminal, enter
    cd Desktop
    ls
and you should see the folder you just created named junk
    now enter the command
    cd junk
    if you now do
    ls
you will see the strange file.
    enter the following command
    sudo rm *
    and enter password when prompted.
    This should remove the file.
    If not, post back.
please don't do anything suggested in this post. none of this has any chance of helping and will potentially hurt as the offending file will be copied from the external drive to your desktop and might become undeletable there too.
nerowolfe, please read the thread. the file in question in Trash on an external drive. it can't be deleted because of strange symbols in its name. the unix rm has been tried already and didn't work because of those characters.

  • How can I get rid of cache files?

Premiere Pro, can't find cache files on Mac, not in the common folder, clean doesn't work, I know there are Gigs of them on my drive.  How can I get rid of them?
I started a premiere project I had worked on before using an external drive but forgot to hook up the external drive.  In a few minutes, Premiere loaded 5 gigs of cache files onto my macbook pro drive OSX 10.8.6.  I tried the following to free up the space:
Tried to "clean" the cache folder before switch it to the external drive - this only removed a small amount of the 5 gigs created
Tried to find files in the Application Support/Adobe/common folder - no cache files found
Tried searching the web for answers - no new info
Tried searching my drive for the files - can't find them
Tried restarting the MacBook and Premiere with and without the external drive - no luck
    Now what?
Message was edited by: Kevin Monahan
Reason: please make a shorter and more concise title next time. Thanks.

First off, exactly which version of Premiere are you running? Not simply PPro CC or CC2014 but the version number shown in the About box.
I'm not clear whether you're saying that Premiere can't find the cache files or that you can't find them.
I gather that you're referring to the Clean button on the Media tab of the Preferences dialog, which is also where you set the path for the cache files.
Are you sure you're looking in the correct Library--not the one that's readily accessible under Macintosh HD but the one that Apple, in it's infinite wisdom, hides from users. To access it, open the Go menu and press Option.

  • How can I get rid of "locked items" in Trash?

I am deleting old Time Machine files from my external drive, using my MacBook Pro (2007) to do it.  I've been doing this for several weeks, but now when I'm in Trash and click "Empty Securely" I get this message:  "There are some locked items in Trash.  Do you want to remove all the items, including the locked ones, or just the unlocked items?"  Regardless of whether I click on "Remove unlocked items" or "Remove all items", the process stops almost immediately and the Trash remains full.  What might be the "locked items" and how can I get rid of them?

You might try restarting and then try to empty the Trash.
If that doesn't work, see -> Solving Trash Problems.

  • Can't get rid of missing file!

When I load the project, I get the FILE MISSING window. The file is simply ",
with no name. I can't find it.
I have 14 sequences to encode in Compressor. Needs to happen overnight. Every time one sequence is done, and it's going to the next, the FCP window shows again with "missing file". I have tried clicking "ignore", but it doesn't seem to help.
How do I deal with this?
    Thanks

  • Can I get rid of this file?

Other than Movie, Music, Pic, here are my "space eater":
    - a folder called Private
    - another called usr
    - In Library:
. Audio folder with Apple Loops: Are they used with iMovie
. Printer folder in Library: do I need 1.6GB for that (I rarely print)
    . Application support
    . Documentation
Can i safely get rid of some or all of them?
What about the Cache folder. I heard it was safe and good to clean it up once in a while?
    Thnx

    Hello,
"Private" and "usr" are both system files. Do not delete them.
Apple Loops are used in Garageband. They are essentially 250+ five-second songs. If you don't use Garageband at all, then yes, you can delete these. If you do use Garageband, and want to continue to do so, then Do not delete that folder.
Application Support is also a system folder, but in that folder is all of the files that are vital in using various Apple and 3rd party programs. If you've removed programs, but still have their folder in your Application Support folder then you can delete their folders. The Application Support folder is important in using applications on your mac.
If you've noticed, with almost all printers on the market, if you simply plug them into your iBook, they're ready to print. That is thanks to the Printer folder. This folder is in no way shape or form vital to your system, but it carries all of the OS X printer drivers. I recommend deleting all of the folders with the name of the makers of printers besides the printer or printers you have.
For example: If you have an HP Deskjet printer, delete all of the folders in the Printer folder, except the HP folder.
    Hope that helps,
    -Ryan

  • How can i get rid of Backup Files?

    Hi,
whe using "Write To Measurement File" and  "Read From Measurement File" i read and save to the same file (i.e. "example.lmv"). When i run the program and the signal is saved in this file, the information is saved in the file but at the same time it creates a "backup" file; I noticed that this is caused when i use "Read From measurement file". Is there any way that i can run the program, without creating this backup files? I run the program many times a day and i dont want to fill my computer with these files every time i run it.
    Thank you for your help,
    Guillermo
P.S: I attached an example VI and the file where the signal is saved.
    Solved!

    example.xlsx ‏11 KB

Thanks for your help again.  The VI that i sent you was a mere example of the true program that I am working on. This program controls a motor and rotates it counter clockwise and clockwise. I can only rotate the motor a maximum of 360 degrees so i set up the program to give me an error whenever I rotate the motor 0 degrees or less and 360 degrees or greater. To do this, I write the mount of degrees desired on a file ("Write to Measurement File") and the next time i rotate the motor I use the "Read from Measurement File" to read the previous amount of degrees that i wrote and adds it to the new one and saves it again on the same file. When this number of degrees reaches 360 degrees, it gives me the a message that i have to change the direction of the motor. The issue that i want to fix is that every time i write to the file it also creates a backup file and i want to get rid of it so i dont have a new file created every time i run the program. I noticed that whenever i use a program that just writes on a file using "Write to Measurement FIle" it writes on that file, only, and  does not create a backup file. Whenever i use "Read to measuremnet file" to then write the signal in "Write to Measurement File" the backup file is created; so i came to the conclusion that is the "Read to Measurement File" that is creating this backup. Is there any other way to call a file without creating this backup file?
Here i will add the three VI's so you can see what i mean. I will add the full program, and the two examples that i explained above.
    Thank you,
    Guillermo Naranjo.

  • Can't get rid of dmg file

Hi friends. i downloaded the shrook RSS reader and installed everything properly with dragging the dmg and install to application folder as always. However everytime I start the program, it starts from the dmg file. If I want to delete the dmg file it tells me I can not, as it is in use and if I quit Shrook and then delete the dmg file, at the relaunch it resintalls shrook. What did I do wrong. i tried redownloading and resintalling to no avail.

    Hi
After you download the diskimage, and open it, you drag the Shrook icon, (the Orange one) to your Applications folder.
As you have copied its contents, you can now eject the diskimage.
Thereafter open Shrook from the Applications folder.

  • Can't get rid of a file (at least it looks liek a file)

I have a file that I can't delete, can't rename, can't open, etc ... I've tried from the Terminal window and still no luck. If I type ls -l the Terminal widow the result is:
ls: filename: No such file or directory
If I drag it to the trash and empty the trash (any number of ways) everything in the trash goes away except this file. It stays but doesn't give me any errors (like can't delete locked file, etc ..)
I also can't move it anywhere other than the folder it's in. I can move that folder but I can't move the file out of the folder.
    Any suggestions?
