Can't Modify files even under administrater settings

I just got my new Imac and I transfered all my music over from my PC. The problem is though that I am trying to clean up and organize my music file names and any attempt through the finder brings up "You do not have sufficient access privileges to rename the item......" Itunes won't let me type in the Get Info area.... I am logged on as administrator so i don't know why this is happening and also its not just music, its lots of files, I can't even get onto my other account even with the sharing and permissions set to read and write...
thanks fo ryour help

It sounds like your file/folder permissions got florfed when you transfered them to your new account. Try this:
-Make sure all your files are inside your home folder.
-Log in to an admin account and enter these commands in Terminal (assuming your short user name is "coolbiz"):
sudo chown -R coolbiz ~coolbiz
sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~coolbiz
That should make everything in your coolbiz account writeable.

As an adminstrator to my MacBook Pro, why can't I rename certain file name  under Finder?

Have you tried running lsof from the Terminal?
Lsof will show you any files that are open, the likelihood is that your file is in use.

  • ITunes can't locate files, even though they never move.

My iTunes is set to copy new files to a dedicated music folder on an internal storage drive and to keep this folder organized. I have never moved this folder or edited anything within this folder.
Now, one day I start my iTunes and I'm greeted with thousands upon thousands of little exclamation marks telling me that iTunes can't locate the files. I made sure that the drive letter didn't change and that every file was still in there. There were too many songs missing to manually locate each song, so I highlighted my entire library and deleted it (while keeping the files, obviously). Several hours after re-adding my music library, everything was good and like it once was.
Not even a day later, I re-open iTunes to find that all the exclamation marks were back and that it could not locate any of my files again. This time I decide to go through all the steps properly by clearing the folder where the xml files are located, uninstalling iTunes, moving my music to an external hard drive and making sure there was no trace of iTunes left.
Ready to start again, I installed iTunes, set where I liked my files to be stored and set my other preferences (including "organize my iTunes folder" and "copy new files to iTunes Folder"). I then re-added my music and spent a day waiting for it to copy to the new iTunes folder. After this I deleted the folder that contained my originals and was left with a fresh install of iTunes and all my music was where I wanted it.
This worked for almost a whole month before thousands of songs went "missing" again. I simply don't know what to do. I can't keeping re-adding my library again and again because a few thousand songs went missing. Each time I do it, it just takes longer and longer and i'm sick of it.
Any help with my problem would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Presumably the location of the iTunes media folder is still correctly set in preferences when this happens?
One thing you can do to investigate this is to select a track that can't be found and go to Get Info>>Summary tab.
This will show you where iTunes thinks it is and the name of the file. Now find the file in Windows Explorer and compare the location and file name are they the same?
A thing that occurs to me is that you have other software on your PC that is able to move/rename files. Do you have anything like that?
Windows Media player has a check box that allows the renaming of files in Options, it's worth looking for that.

  • Spotlight can't find file (even after re-indexing)

I have a files right on my desktop that neither spotlight or finder can find in their search results. Don't know when this started happening, but very weird. I've re-indexed several different ways but still no luck. Anybody run into this?

Baltwo: Thanks for the try, but your answer had no bearing.
The PROBLEM (which I solved) was that the user (the name with the little house next to it), had had its priveleges changes from Read/Write to Write Only (Drop Box).
I have no idea how or why that happened, but the result was Spotlight couldn't find anything. Once I put the privelege back to Read/Write, everything works fine now and Spotlight is once again all seeing! The priveleges are those little Sharing and Permissions section at the bottom of the Info summary (Get Info).
I am back to using Spotlight again and I've made sure any changes to me (the user) are under my lock and key.

  • How can I modify File Explorer to open This PC by default, instead of the new Home view?

    http://superuser.com/questions/819521/how-to-make-windows-10-file-explorer-open-this-pc-by-default

    Hi,
First, I have to say, I cannot get direct way to point the File explorer to This PC as in Windows 10. As an alternative method, we can delete some things in 'Home' and attach 'This Pc' into it via Registry key. Make it look like that we open This
    PC.
    1. Click Windows icon and type regedit in
Search box, and click Regedit to open Registry editor.
    2. Right click to export this key for backup: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
    3. Click Windows icon and type Folder option in Search box, and click
    Folder option to open it.
    4. Under View tab, clear the checkbox Hidden extensions for known file types.
    5. Copy following lines into Notepad, and save it as Fix.reg on Desktop.
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace\{1CF1260C-4DD0-4ebb-811F-33C572699FDE}]

Open the File Explorer again, and you will see the Volumes under Home View

  • Can't transfer files even though I created them

I'm trying to transfer music, iPhoto, and other files to my new iMac so I can erase my MacBook (many, many problems since upgrading to 10.5, but that's another story) and do a clean install. However, when I try to transfer them, using TDM or just over the network, I keep getting a message saying I am attempting to move a file I don't have permission to read. And these are files that I created and I'm moving them to the same user name on my iMac! I notice the files are locked when I Get Info, but I unlock them, set MyUserName to RW (including all enclosed files) and then try to move them. I still get the same message. I also see a user named "unknown" with RO privileges and I can't delete him from the permissions menu.
I've tried resetting permissions several times from Disk Utilities.
    Any ideas?

Oops - realized this is in the wrong forum, but it's a pretty general OSX question...

  • Can't download files -even the support center's remote login appl won't download;  web sites like USA Today will not open; etc.

This all started by certain sites not opening, like USA Today; Intellicast.com.  Installed Maverics yesterday successfully and the web sites very briefly worked and then starting failing again.  Called tech support and couldn't download their remote login code.  From Safari's viewpoint thought there might be a problem with Adobe Flash.  So deleted that and then tried to download the installer code from Adobe and that wouldn't download.  Suggestions would be appreciated.

Firefox can find plugins in several locations, but Firefox 21 changed the location of the "shared" plugin folder so older installers like the Microsoft Windows Media Plugin no longer drop the DLL file in the correct location.
There apparently are two ways to address this:
    (1) Change a Firefox preference so that Firefox checks the old location. Here's how:
    (i) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(ii) In the filter box, type or paste '''plugins''' and pause while the list is filtered
(iii) Double-click '''plugins.load_appdir_plugins''' to switch its value from false to true.
This will take effect after you restart Firefox.
    (2) Copy the plugins folder to the new location. Here's how on Win 7 64-bit:
Open a Windows Explorer window to:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
Right-click and copy the '''Plugins''' folder
Double-click the '''browser''' folder to open it
    Right-click and paste
Right-click the new copy of '''Plugins''' and rename it to '''plugins'''
After restarting Firefox, the plugins in that folder should now be available.

  • Please Help!! Can't modify files that I made in 08 Trial Version!!

    Hi again,
I had the trial version of Xcelsius 2008 & created some dashboards with the trial. I then purchased the full version of 2008 and installed it on the same computer. I opened my documents that I had created previously with the trail, and I'm not able to edit the dashboard like I normally should be able to. When I double click on my componets, I don't get the normal properties tabs with all of the editing options...
    Please Help!

    Hi Renee
Would you mind provide more info on the property tabs? What properties are missing and is the property sheet looks different than the regular ones?

    Hi,

    Hope this helps,

  • [CS3 | JS] Can't modify geometricBounds of object

Okay, I've built some very complex scripts in VB but I'm now working on my Thesis on a Mac and trying to script in JS and some things I probably shouldn't be having problems with, I am.
Like this one: I can't modify (or even read) the geometricBounds of a placed graphic. Here are the lines that are applicable:
    var myGraphic = myPage.place(File(myFileList[myKeyFile]),[0,0]);
var myBounds = myGraphic.geometricBounds;  (this gives me an error of Undefined)
When I use the Extendscript toolkit's Data Browser to twirl down myGraphic when at a breakpoint on the second line, it says myGraphic = [object PDF] and has attributes of concat(), Array(), hasOwnProperty(), and many others, none of which seem to be attributes of graphics. Nothing familiar.
    What am I doing wrong?

Placed graphics are arrays. So after
    var myGraphic = myPage.place(File(myFileList[myKeyFile]),[0,0]);
you have a one-element array myGraphic. The graphic itself is myGraphic[0]
To set the geometric bounds, you need to address the graphic's containing rectangle, in other words, its parent:
    var myBounds = myGraphic[0].parent.geometricBounds;

  • ITunes 10.5 can't find any of my original files, even though they show in my library

I was hoping you could help me with iTunes 10.5. This update has been a pain. When I first installed it, my entire library was gone. Luckily, I saved the "iTunes Library" file before updating and copied it in place and my library appeared. But now the problem I'm having is that the iTunes can't find any of the "original" files, even though my iTunes Media file location has not changed (it's on an external network drive". When I click on the "Do you want to find the original file" I can find it in the appropriate folder. I checked the "Preferences" and under "Advanced" I re-mapped it to the appropriate location and already had the 2 boxes for iTunes organizing files checked. Then went to "File" and "Organize Library" and clicked the first check box and then got the "Copying Files" bar. When this was completed, I thought it would be able to find the original files. But I'm still getting the same error message about not being able to find the "original" files. Do you have any suggestions?
