Can't open a document I was writing yesterday- alert says it needs a new version of pages, but I only updated it in August 2014. Help please!
You have two versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages v5.2.2 in /Applications
Pages ’09 v4 in /Applications/iWork ’09
When you open a Pages ’09 document in the default Pages v5.2.2, it is converted to the latter exclusive, new document format, and is not directly backwards compatible with Pages ’09. You would have to use Export To > Pages ’09 in Pages v5.2.2.
If Pages ’09 is running, with/without an open window — double-clicking a Pages v5.2.2 formatted document, or attempting to open said document with the Pages ’09 document chooser, will generate the dialog you saw. It really means you cannot open this newer document format with your older version of Pages. There is nothing to download, because the cause of this dialog is simply having Pages v5.2.2 installed.
You can open actual Pages ’09 documents:
Right-click, Open with > Pages (4.3)
Via Pages ’09 document chooser
Drag/drop Pages ’09 document on the Pages ’09 Dock icon
Pages ’09 File > Open…
Pages ’09 File > Open Recent >

Sometimes when I send an email with a Pages attachment it is tuned into a zip file and then I am unable to open the atttachment afterwards. I get a message saying I need a newer version of Pages in order to open the attachment. How can I get around this?

The message saying you need a newer version indicates that you saved from a newer version and tried to open with an older version. This has nothing directly to do with whether the file was compressed and packaged in a .zip file.
If you have two versions of Pages on your computer, you must take care to note which of them you are using. You may want to delete a Dock alias to the older version and you may need to change the Finder preference for which version is set to automatically open .pages files.

This month I downloaded the newest version of PAGES. The documents I have typed using this App will now not open and the message says-"You need a newer version of PAGES to open this document. Could anyone help me with this please. Thanks.

You can add the icon of the missing Pages on your Dock or open Pages from the Apple menu > Recent Items list.
Or you can archive Pages 5 so that it doesn't automatically open.
If you are unhappy about this review/rate Pages 5 in the App Store.

Since I updated my pages to 5.01, I can't open documents created on my iPad today. It says you need a new version of pages to open document. (My computer says it is installed). Has any one encountered this?
Well, here's what I found out that works for me...
I had a Pages icon on my dock, and launching it brought up version 4.3. But I went to my Apps folder and found the new updated icon there and when I launced that it brought up version 5.01. So apparently the Apple update process left two versions launchable on my iMac. Weird...

I am trying to open a recent document in Pages. It says I need a newer version of pages to open document. When I go to install pages it says I already have on this computer and to check software updates. There are no updates showing. Now what?? I can't open any of my documents.

Some files in "DOCUMENTS" icon in dock won't open. Get msg saying "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Already have Pages 4.1 installed. Same files will open ok from Finder/Pages App./selected file. Prob not noted until recently after sync'd with ipad2 (Pages) when I installed iOS5. Anyone-- please?!

Went to open a file in words and got message. "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." I have latest version. All other files in words open w/o a problem. Please help.

I saved a spreadsheet to iCloud now I can not access it. The message I get says I need a newer version of Numbers but I already have it. How do I get access to my document on iCloud?

ThanksPersonally, I would not recommend deleting/removing the iWorks 09 folder for several reasons: one is that the new versions have had several functionalities removed and until you decide that you can work with the new one and do not miss any features the older version had, I would leave the old one in place. Personally, I will not be using the new versions.
The second reason is that you can accomplish what you want using a different approach: simply open a Get Info window of your document and choose which version of Pages you want this to open in - you can also stipulate that all docs like this are opened with whichever particular version.
FWIW: Once you have edited an old document in the new Pages version, you can no longer open it in the older version. However, you can still export it to the old version. -
Recently I updated to Maverick -- I also updated Numbers, Pages and Keynote. NOW, I cannot open my pages documents. I get a message that I need a newer version of Pages. I have the newest version (5.2). How do I get around this to view my documents?

Hello, I have updated to the newest version of Pages and yet when I open a document to use it says, "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." When I got to install it again it says I have already done that. Anybody have any tricks? Thanks!

I am stumped - I am trying to open a recent Pages file (created with a newer software that I thought was correctly installed recently) but error message says that I need a "newer version" of Pages. OK, this is the first time I have used this so I may not have started correctly, so here goes another try. I opened a Numbers Document and noticed the presentation was different from when I worked it before. Since there have been a number of auto updates since I had worked in Numbers, I assumed I had an updated program. I found it hard to figure out so I closed the document and went on to other things. When I went back to it I found a message saying I needed a newer version of the program to open it. Fortunately, the document was backed up and when I opened the backup it came in my familiar form. I have not purchased the new version of Numbers but suspect that is what was using for that brief period yesterday. Anyone know haw that happened?

It is pretty amazing you got a new version without even knowing it.
In System Preferences > App Store you can turn off the automatic updates by unchecking "Install app updates" as I've done here:
If you're using Numbers across platforms and displaying dynamic output on the iPad or doing data entry there, you'll be *much* happier with Numbers 3.0 than the old version. If you're doing a lot of traditional printing of heavily formatted documents, the old version is much better. For most day-to-day uses in between it's a toss-up. The new version, despite its flaws, is a powerful application that can enhance productivity in ways the old version can't.

Created a document 3 years ago with Pages '08. Got a new Mac last summer, migrated my user account, reinstalled Pages '08. Upgraded to Mavericks recently.
Now when trying to open the document I get the message "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document."
Note that I have read a number of the messages here that are similar. To be clear there is only one Pages (Pages '08) on this system. Its in the iWork folder.
Is it the case that this document and all the other Pages '08 documents on my system are lost forever?
BTW I have looked at the new version of Pages. Its just plain awful from UX to quality. What has gone wrong at Apple and specifically in the iWork group in the past few years???

And in trying to post this I got the "You are not allowed to create or update this content" Changed the Community from what was automatically selected and seems to work now. Whats with Apple Engineering and QA these days???I've never had Pages 5 on my system. Just to confirm I copied the file to a USBDrive and gave it to a friend to try out. He has Pages 5 on a new MBP with latest Mavericks. When he tried to open it he got the following message:
"You document will open in the new Pages for Mac. If you save it or edit it, you'll need the latest Pages on iOS7 to open it on an iOS device."
But it did open on his system. He closed it, no save, and reopened but did not get the above message again.
We concluded that the file is actually a Pages '08 file because of the above message.
However we also suspect that when this file was simply opened in Pages 5.2.2 on his system it got flagged and possibly converted which is actually quite offensive!
