Can't open/access Shared Variable Properties Dalog Box

I've just upgraded to LV 8.6 from 8.5. Now I can't open up the Shared Variable Properties Dialog Box. In the Project Explorer, I expand the shared variable library, select the shared variable, right-click on it to get the pop-up menu, select Properties, nothing happens. The same is true when I right-click on the shared variable library or My Computer and select New>>Variable.
On another computer that I upgraded to LV 8.6, I can do the same things and get the dialog box, albeit it looks different in 8.6 than it did in 8.5.
There were no errors reported in upgrading these computers. Any ideas as to what is wrong?

I've tried re-installing LV 8.6 from the DVDs sent to me. I get the following errors:
Error 1335. the cabinet file 'mib.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error , an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package. - I responded with 'ignore'
The NI Assistant Framework LabVIEW Code Generator 8.5 installaion has failed with the following error.
Internal Error 2350.
Continue? - I responded with 'yes'
LabView installs but I still can't get access to the dialog box.

Where can I find the "Shared Variable Properties" VI to be used in my program for configuring SV remotely?

I was using the "configure Alarms" and "configure Logging" VIs to design two user interfaces to make use of these VIs when I came across a problem. In both VIs you can enable logging of alarms. So which one is valid? Which one has priority? Then I looked at the "Shared Variable Properties" built into the project explorer. Now I realize that I am spending all of this time redesigning this properties dialog (which also has two options of enabling logging of alarms (on the Alarms tab to the far right side as well as on the Logging tab). So now my question is, how do I access this "Shared Variable Properties" dialog through my program (Note: this would be on a different machine than where the shared variables are set up. The point is to configure shared variables remotely).

Here is a VI I re-created and posted for all. I'm not sure why NI doesn't provide their VI to the developer. The only thing I can't figure out is that when reading in the "Ack Type" into a variable, it generates an error. It will work if you go into "project explorer" and right click on the library with the shared variable and "deploy" but eventually stops working. I have tried using the "undeploy library" and "deploy library" to see if this would be a work around but had no success.
Just pipe the path of the shared variable into the vi.

In the shared variable properties box, when enabling aliasing, what is the difference between binding to a project variable vs. to a psp url

In the shared variable properties box, specifically with regard to a the target being an rt target, when enabling aliasing, what is the difference between binding to a project variable vs. to a psp url?

The difference is in the type of variable you are binding it to. A project variable is a variable that lives within the specific project in which it was created. A PSP URL is an address using the Publish-Subscribe Protocol (PSP). PSP URLs will enable it to communicate between different machines and also between projects which may or may not be open. The project variable will exist within the project.

How can I change my Shared Variable from "I/O Variable" to "Network Published"

I have an application that is using a series of NI wireless sensor nodes. I am trying to programmatically access shared variables. Right now the only method I have found to access the data from the shared variables is datasocket read. I am on labview 8.6.1 so I don't have as many shared variable options as newer versions of labview. I do think there is a way to access properties for the shared variables, but I'm not sure about how to change the nodes channel properties to "Network-Published". Do i need to remove the node from the project and bring it back in with the new settings? When i have done this in the past i have run into naming conflicts. I would appreciate any ligtht that can be shed on this issue that will help me create a vi that operates quicker.

Any Shared Variable that has “I/O Variable” for its Variable Type (see screenshot of the Shared Variable Properties below) refers to any channel of data (such as Analog Input or Output or Digital Input or Output) directly from a module channel. In other words, this is how you directly get the raw reading straight from (or to!) a specific module channel.
You cannot edit the Variable Type to Network Published. You can check “Enable Network Publishing” as above, which allows this Variable to be accessed from a VI on a Host VI. You could also create a separate Network-Published Shared Variable which you can wire directly to the I/O Variable on the Target VI if you wish.

Shared Variable Properties and DSC

Is there a way to assign engineering units to a shared variable as a
configuration parameter? This should be on the "Scaling" page of
the shared variable properties. It seems this is a logical and
convenient place to track units. Assigning units programmatically
using the Scaling:Units property is awkward (to say the least).
On similar lines, why aren't shared variable properties automatically
saved to the DSC historical database? Every trace should have a
set of information that exposes ALL the shared variable properties that
created it. Take something like engineering units for
example: then you would know what kind of historical trace you
are looking at! This seems so basic I can't imagine why it was
missed.
Unless I missed something -- please enlighten me.

You are correct in that the units property is not exposed on the
Scaling page of hte Shared Variable properties dialog, and it sounds
like you are already well aware of the existing method to access this
property through the property node interface. As you have also
discovered, the Citadel database that we use with DSC does not have a
built-in provision for storing metadata about the shared variable from
which a trace originates. You can emulate this with, for example, an
array of strings which is also logged to the database, with each string
containing the metadata for a particular trace.
Since it seems like having these features would benefit you, I
encourage you to let our DSC development group know your needs by
filling out product feedback, accessible on our site at
http://www.ni.com/contact . This will send a feature request
directly to the appropriate R & D group, who reads and evaluates
every suggestion made. This is your most direct way to let us know
what features would best meet your needs.

IPhone 3G - Can I open a shared calendar on my exchange server?

Active sync on the iPhone works great for contacts, email, my calendar, accepting/declining invitations, etc. I am not sure if it is possible or if I just don't know how to navigate the device to do this; can I open a shared calendar in my organization similar to how I can open someone else's calendar in Outlook on my desktop?

How Can i retain the Shared Variable Values after PC rebooting

Hi all,
I am facing a paculiar problem with Shared Variables. I have an application in which shared variables are used for data communication.
One of the application requirement is to retain the variable values eventhough PC is rebooted or started after crashing.
As per the my understanding, the variable values will retain eventhough the PC is rebooted. But here i can observe a paculiar problem like some library variables are retaing the values while some others not. I enabled logging for all the variables.
I tried many ways. like logging enabled, logging disabled, changing variable names, changing process names etc... But i am not getting a consistent behaviour.
I hope some you can help me in solving this issue.. "How Can i retain the Shared Variable Values after PC rebooting"

Thanks for the post and I hope your well.
What do you mean by not getting consistent behaviour.. this will all depend on excatly when the crash happens i.e. before the write or after.
Surely a better method would be to log the data to a file during the reboot...
I beleived the value read back
will be the default value for the shared variable's data type.
The LabVIEW DSC 8.0 module adds more functionality to the shared variable, including initial values and alarms.
If you enable an initial value on a shared variable, when the variable
engine comes back on-line it will default to this value. Setting a bad
status alarm for the shared variable is also a good way of handling
this type of event. Additionally, if you are using a LabVIEW Real-Time
target such as Compact RIO or Compact FieldPoint, it is appropriate to
consider hosting the shared variable engine on the real-time target.
These devices have watch-dog capabilities and are typically the
hardware controlling the critical pieces of an application. Most
Windows or PC-based targets do not have these fail-safes.
I guess, if you could explain to me again that would be great. From my point of view, if I have a cRIO and a Windows PC. If the windows PC crashes, the cRIO will still update its shared variables. Then once the PC has started up its own shared variable engine, and the bindings are loaded, it will once again continue to update its copies of the variables.

"Shared Variable Control" combo box on Front Panel is empty after Build

Hello;
I have a project using shared variables and the DSC module. I am working on building a .exe application now that the project seems to run well.
I have several places on the front panel where I have shared variable controls. These combo boxes allow the user to click the drop down button and browse the list of shared variables in the project, as well as "browse". When I run the VI from the project, the combo boxes fully populate with all of the deployed tags in the project (I have only one .lvlib in the project).
When I build the project and run the executable, the only item in the combo box list is the "browse..." selection. I can click on that and browse to my variables, but it is much more time consuming to do so than to simply select the desired variable from the drop down list.
So, how can I populate the list of shared variables from a particular library ino the Shared Variable Control combo box in a project build?
A couple of things I have done to try to esolve th problem are ensure that the "Enable Enhanced DSC Run-Time Support" box is checked in the advanced tab of the build window, added the appropriate .lvlib file to the "Dynamic VI's and SUpport Files" window under the "Source Files" tab of the build window, and properly deployed the tag library programmatically in the project.

What you see in the development environment is to make it easier for developers, and as far as I know, there's no way to automatically populate the shared variable control during run time in an executable. The reason being that the shared variable control would have no way to know which process it should be using to get the variables from. The attached vi demostrate how you can acquire the list of shared variables in a process. You can also set the default values of the shared variable control by right clicking it on the front pannel, go to Data Operations->Make Current Value Default. I can do some more research on this, but I'm about 95% sure that there's no way to convert the array of shared variables to populate the shared variable control, as the shared variable control is a special type of xControl.

Shared Variables - Properties

I have a couple of questions about properties of Shared Variables (SV). They can be configured either by using the dialog box (right-click on SV -> Properties), or programmatically via the "SharedVariableIO" property node. Have a look at the NI-Examples to see how SV can be created programmatically by using the DSC module.
1) The dialog box offers a property "Variable Type" which can be "Network-published", "Single-Process" or "Time-Triggered". The "SharedVariableIO" property node gives no access to this property. Does anybody know why? The same question can be rephrased: How can I create a "Single-Process" SV programmatically?
2) The "SharedVariableIO" property node has two items, "Network.OnScan" and "Network.ConnectionType", which have no direct correspondance to any of the properties available in the dialog box. What is the exact meaning of those properties? The on-line help isn't of much use here...
3) Mutliple SV can be edited by using the Multiple Variable Editor (Tools->Shared Varaible->Multiple Variable Editor). A cool feature is the import/export of CSV-files. I am interested in programmatically creating SVs from the information stored in such a CSV-file. Reading the file is no problem, but connecting the file entries to the properties of the "SharedVariableIO" property node would be quite some job. In principle NI has already solved that within the Multiple Variable Editor. I guess there is a bunch of VIs somewhere below "....Program Files/NI/.../vi.lib that do exactly this thing. Does anybody know, if these (which ones?) are available for public use?

You can't. The single-process shared variable is an old style LabVIEW global placed under the shared variable abstraction. There is currently no way to create those on the fly. Time-triggered also cannot be created programmatically. I confess I don't know enough about them to know the reason why.

Network.On Scan = read/write hardware? - this allows you to programmatically control when you are reading from or writing to configured hardware.
Network.ConnectionType = connect to hardware even when no one is viewing me? - this has 2 choices, UpFront & OnDemand, UpFront means that the variable will be connected to hardware even when no one is connected to the variable. This is useful when you want to reserve hardware or when logging is enabled. OnDemand means that you disconnect from hardware whenever no one is reading the variable.

I would advise against using any of these. National Instruments can change, or remove, those underlying files at any time as a result of modifications to the MVE. That could cause issues for any code using those sub-VIs.

Any ideas why I can no longer access shared files on networked PC's in my office? I keep getting a "server not exist or unavailable" error.

I have been able to access the files in the past. Actually when I've had this problem before a restart has solved it. Not this time. And it keeps happening. Even more strange, Filemaker is able to access shared databases stored on the same PC's. Why can Filemaker see these computers? Both also show up in the finder but when I try to connect I get the error. I also tried "connect as" with no success. Any ideas?

Thanks Barney, I am now using pages to open exisiting Word documents. and then saving in the new format. I then trash the old incompatable (.doc) file.
This works OK, but it will be a time consuming operation to be repearted on each file that I use.
Is there any shortcut to enable sync all of the .doc files to Page?
I have not managed to recover Entourage email files . But now use Mail application, which is fine.
Encountered problems are ongoing.
I have an Epson Epson Stylus Photo Rx430 printer.
Since upgrading to OSX10.7 print files do not load to the printer. The Epson job box shows data is being sent to printer but it the task is never completed.
I take this to be a Printer Driver issue.
Today, I have been in contact with Epson Printer support, enquiring if they have any driver updates for RX430 that would be compatable with OSX10.7 Lion.
I was notified by Epson that they do not have any drivers for any of their printers for the new OSX 10.7.
How may I continue using my now unsupported Epson printer?

Thunar can not open samba shared

Hi! I installed samba to share files to my Windows VM, I need to run some software to works. I share my home and /run/media/ to share all usb mounted in Linux.
With my VM I have not issues. Windows can see and access to files. If is a usb first I need to access them in linux to mount. not issues.
But when I try with thunar, I use XFCE, I got to browse network I have Windows Network, xpsl421x, XPSL421X (File Sharing). When I try to enter some of them, I receive the next messages:

Would you please let us know complete error message or provide a screenshot of it (please hide all protected
or private information)? Please directly access the folder, did find any issue?
Please check if turn on file and printer sharing. Meanwhile, please open Event Viewer and check if find some
relevant events.

How can i open a shared calendar in mac calendar from outlook?

My boss uses Outlook and I have everything set up on my Mac with Mail and Calendar. His assistant just sent me a shared calendar invitation and I can't open it. Does anyone know how to make this work?

download microsoft outlook, if you have microsoft office you should have it also. If not try thunderbird from mozilla to open the file

I have an inner class that implements Runnable (i.e. a thread) and has a variable in it. I want to be able to access that variable from outside the thread class so that I can set or retrieve the variable.
here is the code for the program
class myClass
     public static void main(String[] args)
          myClass c = new myClass();
     myClass()
          Thread t = new Thread(new myThread());
          t.number = 1;
          t.start();
     class myThread implements Runnable
          int number = 0;
          public void run()
     }//end myThread
}//end myClassthe line
t.number = 1;
where I try to set the number variable to 1 gives me an error (in the MyClass constructor)
This is my error
AccessThreadVars.java:11: cannot find symbol
symbol : variable number
location: class java.lang.Thread
          t.number = 1;
                    ^
1 errorif I put a method in myThread, and then try to call that method from myClass (via t.MethodName()) it gives me that same error telling me it can't find it..
what am I doing wrong? how can I get access my thread's variables and methods??

1. Type names should start with an uppercase letter
2. t is defined as a Thread, not as a myThread
(which, may I insist, should be "MyThread"), so the
compiler has no means of detecting that "number" is
an accessible field of the object... which wouldn't be accessible anyway, cause you're trying to get attributes from your Runnable after wrapping it inside a Thread.
Why don't you do something like :
MyThread t = new MyThread();
t.number = 1;
new Thread(myThread).start();?
I bet you don't use Thread's own methods anyway...

I don't know why I can't open Home Sharing working now?

I don't know what's wrong?
Today, when I turned on Apple TV, it can't connect to my iMac. (internet is workable and can be detected by Apple TV)
I tried to re-open Home Sharing, but it's strange that "Sharing" selection can't be kept in iTune List when I issued "Done".
What's wrong to my iTune? What's wrong to my Home Sharing ?

iPad-settings, movies, home sharing. Music-home sharing. Both under settings on the iPad. Enter your apple I'd and password in both spots. If you have a computer, turn on homesharing on iTunes as well. Homesharing has to be all turned on with the SAME apple I'd. Even if it's your iPad and a wife's iPad, pick one apple I'd and put that apple I'd in both of those spots even if it's not your iPad. Kinda confusing.

Iphoto Update-can't open/access photos

Frustrating! IPhoto has put all my photos on the cloud and updated Iphoto. Now I can not open the app, nor access any of my pictures. When going to set up up, It brings up a forced "option" to buy storage. What if don't want to buy storage? I feel like my photos are being held hostage at the moment but I know that there has to be an alternative. Can anyone decifer what's going on?

You'll need to upgrade to iPhoto 9.6.1 by following the directions posted by Terence Devlin in this topic:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
