Can't play music in itunes library

When I try to play music from itunes I get an error that says: The song 'X' could not be used because the original file could not be found. When given the option, I can look up the song and open the file. Why isn't itunes opening it automatically?

I just updated to version 7, and many of the songs I downloaded previously now have an exclamation point next to the checkbox. What does this mean? When I click on one of the songs to play it, it states the song cannot be used because the original file cannot be found. Would you like to locate it? When I type in the name of the song, I don't get anything. Can you please help?

    Unfortunately the Netgear DG834N router is rubbish with Macbook Pro's. I've had a few netgear routers, which were all good with my mac, which is why I bought the 'N' series one as an upgrade to the 'G' version, but basically it crashes my Mac constantly. I get the fade up grey screen forcing my to hard power off my book. everything freezes. It plain just doesn't work. wireless 'N' is still just in draft form and the difference between the Netgear and Mac version on the macbook pro just clash. Netgear haven't updated the firmware on the router since last year, so hopefully the will soon, but I've just gone back to my old 'G' version, and stuck the DG834N on ebay. I tried all the configs, with and with out security and no luck, it always disconnected, froze and crashed.

    What I am trying to do is very simple, and I am sure I have done it before.
    I have an Apple TV (2nd Gen) connected to Wifi Network (Airport Extreme 802.11n) I want to stream content from the itunes library on my macbook pro over the wifi network to the Apple TV. This works no problem, home sharing is set up and I can see the itunes library under 'Computer' on the Apple TV interface. I can use the Apple Remote to scroll through and play content from my itunes. Works no problem.
    Now I want to use the remote app on my ipad mini to control the apple tv. Using up to date app (Version 3.01) Again, everything looks like it should work. I have turned on Home Sharing on the remote app settings. It works fine and both my itunes library and Apple TV show up on the interface. I can touch the itunes icon and control the itunes on my computer and play music and video on my computer screen. 
    Now when I touch the apple tv icon I can't see my itunes library content to play on the apple tv. I see the below image. If I tap on the icon in the bottom left it takes me back to the screen in the first image. What is the strangest thing is that I can control the apple tv using the gestures interface! This isn't what I want though and I want to be able to see the itunes library on the screen of the ipad and play it on the apple tv. Instead I get the screen seen in the below image.

    OK, Problem solved. Software on Apple TV was VERY outdated. It had been sitting in the box for over a year and needed an update. Problem solved!

  • Can't play songs from iTunes library on MacBook Pro

    I can't play anything from my iTunes (10.0) library on my MacBook Pro. When I try to, I get message that song could not be used as original file could not be found, and offer to locate it, and I end up with an exclamation mark against that file. Any ideas how to fix this?
    PS Not having any problems syncing to iPhone and playing music from there.

    Iphone will sync or manually manage with one and only one computer at a time.
    Syncing or manually managing to another will indeed erase the current content and replace with the content from the new computer.

    When I try to play music on pc in iTunes, I get a message saying can't locate file. Works on my iPod. I did do the locate thing for my movies, but to do this for each music file, is there a better way, what's wrong, they worked before. I recently started scyning iPhone, is when it started I think.

    This is the way I would have recommended you that you go about it. If your library is in a non-standard layout then normally it still works as long as the media is restored to the same paths it held previously. Click a broken file and click CTRL+I to Get Info, then locate the file when prompted. iTunes may then offer to try to locate the rest of the missing files. This is sometimes successful. Otherwise I have a script called FindTracks that should be able to do the trick.

  • Can't add music to iTunes Library

    As the subject states, I am no longer able to add music to my iTunes Library. If I try to add a song, it tells me that I do not have permissions to write to my Music folder. I went to the Music folder's Get Info window, and under Ownership and Permissions, this is what it said:
    You can: Read & Write
    Details:
    Owner: admin (lock is locked)
    Access: Read & Write
    Group: admin
    Access: Read & Write
    Others: No Access
    By the way, 'admin' is my short name. I have tried repairing my permissions with Disk Utility, but it did not correct anything in my Music folder. I have looked at permissions for other folders, and some say 'staff' as the group. Should I change the group to that? This is becoming very frustrating. If anyone knows what may be going on here, please _do not hesitate_ to tell me.

    Have you tried authorizing your computer? In iTunes go up to Store, then Authorize Computer. Type in your user name and password and click "Authorize". You will then get a pop-up window stating if your authorization was successful or not. Hopefully this will give you access to do as you please with your Music Library.

  • I can't sync music from iTunes Library to iPhone

    I've just set up my iPhone and whilst the iPhone syncs all my email, calendars etc, it doesn't sync with the music already in my Library. I've tried manually syncing but a 'no entry' sign comes up. I've unchecked all the music, tried almost everything but my iPhone is still saying no content is downloaded.
    Can anyone offer some help or assistance please?

    Do you have Sync Music selected under the Music tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes and if so, what else is selected under the Music tab?
    If you want to manually manage music and videos, this must be selected under the Summary tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. You can transfer music via syncing or manually. You can do one or the other, not both at the same time.

    Make sure "Manually manage Music and videos" box is checked under Summary tab.
    If the box is already checked and you are still not able to drag it over, highlight the video in movie library and go to iTunes menu ADVANCED and select "Create iPod or iPhone version".  Drag the newly created version over.

    Im going to explain everthing from the beginning so people bear with me. Last night i turned on my computer to watch some old footage i have.It wouldnt play,then when i tried to open the file this message poped up ( documents could not open unknown error -101). Then i went to play some audio tracks i create, they also wouldnt play for some reason. When i tried to open that file the same message popped up.So then i went into itunes to play the same track it still no sound. Not only was there no sound in itunes, but it wouldnt play at all. So im thinking maybe i need some updates, so i checked for that. I had two up dates, i installed them.Then i restarted my computer everything was working fine now. Now this mourning i turned on my computer again, the samething is happening all over again. I went into system preference to check my sounds everything seems to be in order, except the mute box is checked and it wont let me uncheck it. Also when i hit the sound key on the keyboard, the sound is all the way up but there is a circle with a line going threw the middle of it.I cant adjust the sound at all. I also tried to go into disk utility to see if i needed some kind of repairs that didnt work. I would appreciate it if someone can give me some advice to correct my problem, i am in desperate need.   • IPhoto 9.5.1 Slide show does play songs from iTunes library

    iPhoto 9.5.1 does not play music from iTunes library for a slideshow but does play music from the Sample Music.

    Exactly the same symptoms here - no playback of own music, only the sample songs. Apple's comments on this?

  • Problem with iTunes. I have Windows 8 on a new laptop. Installed latest version of iTunes. Can play music in My Library but when I click on Itunes Store I get the message "iTunes has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.

    Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    This works for some users. Not sure why.
    Go to Settings>General>Date and Time> Set Automatically>Off. Set the date ahead by about a year.Then see if you can connect to the store.
