Can't repair permissions from the original Panther disk.

My computer has been acting a little quirky lately and decided to repair permissions as I have done many times in the past. When I started up from my original panther start up disk and tried to repair permissions, it worked for awhile and then I got an error "Disk Utility has lost it's connection with the disk management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch disk utility. When I try to quit disk utility, I get the warning that there are still some processes taking place- although the thermometer bar doesn't move- and that quiting could render the disk non-operational. What do I do now?

Please see the stickie note at the top of this forum that details where to go for this fix. It's been a comman problem. Alternatively try here (a direct link to the above stickie). HTH.

  • Can I always repair permissions from the install disc, even after updates?

Does anyone know if I can always repair permissions properly from my original install disc that came with my iMac thats 10.4.1. I now am 10.4.3 and was wondering if things change with every update rendering the install disc out of date for permission repair.
I read some where on the internet that after you update from the original OS you should just use disc utility. I know nothing about this sort of thing, any help on this and the types of utilities I might need would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe this is dumb, but what do you mean by don't believe the hype on permissions repair.
are you talking about the posting I read about not being able to continuously update and boot from the original OS disks, or that repairing permissions is overated as far as system maintanence.
I get a lot of conflicting advise on system maintanence. Thats why I ask this. I'm fairly new to macs and how to keep them going problem free.
    by the way,...
    thanks for the replies guys
Yes, he can do the same with overkill third-party
utilities that aren't on a bootable disc for which
he's already paid. (And is Disk Utility so hard to
use that we need third-party utilies with this
    function?)
Hmm. What if he specifically needs a bootable disc
that can repair permissions? Can't assume his
specific needs and environment when he hasn't
    detailed them.

  • Reinstalling MacOS from the original install disks

I have a late 2009 Mac mini which I want to sell, so trying to install the original OS (Snow Leopard) from the original install disks. When loading the disk and either trying the option key or the C key the disk simply runs for 10 secs then ejects itself.
I've tried other disks in the drive with no problems.
    Any ideas?
I've done this procedure several times over the years on other macs and had no problem, so fairly sure I'm doing it correctly!

Well it took 12 hours to free the space on the hard drive, but completed fine. But still I have the same problems, so borrowed a friend's superdrive, and, it worked, to a point! I know find running through the installation disc setup, when I get to the point where you select your hard drive to install to it the HD has a yellow triangle over it and it says you can't install to this drive!
I ran the repair function on the drive and it says all is OK.
Sorry about this but any further ideas? I'm on the verge of taking to a Apple repairer but would rather sort it myself it possible.
    Thanks for your help

  • How can I reinstall printer software only from the original install disks?

my imac 17" printer software got corrupted and I can't use my new printer. Is there a way to just install all the original printer software from my original disks that came with the mac? I have updated all the software on the mac and don't want to go back to the old panther disk.
or is there an apple download site that has just the printer software.
    thanks

Insert your original disk and look for additional software, the printers should be somewhere there. Your other option is to get [Pacifist|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12743] and use it to extract the printer data from the install package.

  • Exported and later Imported .pst files retain the permissions from the original Mailbox.

After migrating from Exchange 2003 to 2010 something strange happens when exporting folders to a .pst file and importing them in another mailbox.
The acces right that are applied, are those from the original mailbox.
I have been searching on the internet about this strange behaviour, but it seems our organization is the only one where is applies.
Does anybody have any ideas what can be the cause?

    Hi,
For example, userA was granted permissions to the Inbox folder of userB's mailbox. You exported userB's Inbox folder to PST file and then imported to userC's mailbox. After that, userA had permissions for Inbox folder in userC's mailbox as well. This is
what you had encountered, is it right?
Generally, permissions aren't preserved when you export folders to PST file, only the content itself is exported. I recommend you remove this mailbox folder permission using the Remove-MailboxFolderPermission command to check the result.

Splitting a library does not remove the folder I moved from the original library.  I exported a folder of 3000 images from the original library to a new library.  The new libraryb was created alright, but the folder and the 3000 images remain in the original library.  Why? And how do I safely remove them?

The new libraryb was created alright, but the folder and the 3000 images remain in the original library.  Why? And how do I safely remove them?
Exporting a library will  create a duplicate of the exported library items. Usually you do this to work on a partial library on another computer and later merge the changed images back. Splitting the library is not the primary purpose of exporting.
If you want to remove the library items that you exported, select them in the source list of the library inspector and delete them (File > Delete Original Images and all Versions).  Then empty the Aperture Trash, after checking that you did not trash more than you wanted.
But check, if the backup of your Aperture library is in working condition, and check the exported library carefully, before you do such a massive delete.

  • Charged my email(user name) and now we can't update apps from the original email is there a way to link?

apps from old email user name will not update. Anyone know how to link this

If you updated your existing account then try logging out of it on the iPad by tapping on the id in Settings > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores on iOS 6) and then log back in and see if that 'refreshes' the account on the iPad and whether you can then update the older apps. If you created a new account then any content that you purchased/downloaded via the old account will remain tied to that old account, and only that old account can download updates to its apps.

  • It would appear that there is no longer any support for Acrobat Pro 9 for Mac. I keep getting a notice for updates but when I elect to do so, I get the message that I need to reinstall the program from the original program disks- which I no longer have.

I’m debating whether to can the app, or just ignore, or turn off the updater. Suggestions?

If you are at version 9.5.5 that was the end of the line for Acrobat 9.x.  You are correct that Acrobat 9 is no longer supported.  Adobe is only supporting Acrobat X and Acrobat XI at this time.
If you need to reinstall Acrobat 9 though you can still download the installer bits here:  Download Adobe CS5 Free Trials – All Direct Links without Akamai | ProDesignTools
Make sure to follow the directions carefully and sign into the Adobe Trials page first with your Adobe ID.

  • Photos can not import the photo library "can not repair permissions" what I can do?

    Hello
When I try to import your iPhoto library to the Photos app gives me error.
The misconception is that "can not repair permissions from the photo library."
I have repaired permissions from iphoto and ko.
    What I can do?
    Thanks.

Drag the photos to the iPhoto icon on the dock. Then wait for the fix that will hopefully come in 10.8.3

  • Repair Permissions: Always the same problem

Every time I run Disk Utility, I get the same 3 problems! Is this normal? Why can't Disk Utility repair this?
    Verify permissions for “Macintosh HD”
    Determining correct file permissions.
    Permissions differ on ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Frameworks/InternetUtilities.bundle/Contents /MacOS/InternetUtilities, should be -rw-rw-r-- , they are -rwxrwxr-x
    Permissions differ on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave 10 Preferences, should be -rwxrwxr-x , they are -rw-rw-r--
Permissions differ on ./usr/libexec/dumpemacs, should be -r-xr-xr-x , they are -r-sr-xr-x
    Permissions verification complete
The privileges have been verified or repaired on the selected volume

Restart your computer after repairing permissions.
If you are still getting those errors after restarting, then I suggest that you boot from your System Install DVD. From the Utility Menu run the repair disk/permissions option.
Repairing permissions from the Tiger/Leopard DVD
Boot up from your Tiger or Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
If Disk First aid is able to complete the repair now click on the "Repair permissions" button.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer.

  • Can't repair permissions with Install Disk

My install disk is not recognized by Leopard, which I installed like two months ago and kept up to date on regular basis. I have repaired permissions on various occasions already, but out of the blue, today the disk is ejected with no explanation at all. I tried the disk on another Mac, and it works flawless.
I repaired permissions from the other machine and tried to use the DVD again in my MacBook Pro and again the problem arrises.
Can this be related to the last firmware update?
Thank you very much in advance for any help you can provide.

Thanks for your prompt response. Unfortunately, PRAM zap didn't solve the problem, and I watched the hole Bourne Ultimatum film 20 minutes ago....
Luckily the DVD player seems to work with CD's, and DVD's
Still fishing for a trick to end this problem.

  • Disk Utility: cannot Repair Permissions, even on Leopard  installation disk

After reinstall of iLife '08 and Software Update completed, I ran Repair Disk Permissions. Got an immediate red note "error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (sic)." with a flag: "First Aid failed. Disk Utility stopped repairing permissions on 'Mac HD...' because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit."
I went to my Leopard Installation disk and ran "Repair Disk." No problem found. From the Installation disk, ran Repair Disk Permissions. got the same RED INK comments and flag, First Aid failed.
Restarts don't help. Also, so far I have not found an application which is NOT working despite this Disk Utility problem, happy to report ;-))
Additional background. I was reinstalling iLife to fix iPhoto after a clean reinstallation of Leopard and reincorporation of files and apps vis Time Machine. It had been several weeks and iPhoto appeared to be the only app which was not quite right.

Disk Repair can trigger "underlying task" but I've never heard or seen a Permissions Repair do so.
You should never use the DVD to repair permissions. You should be using the same OS version. And of course you can always repair permissions from your boot drive; or from backup/clone or alternate "emergency" drive. Otherwise, the DVD and older version of DU will be wrong.
I know I read that on MacFixit, but I am not sure I bookmarked it.
Don't rely on Apple First Aid, even a clean bill of health doesn't mean there aren't problems which Disk Warrior can deal with.

I tried to rename a file, it gave me an error message (can't remember the number - 43??) and then the file disappeared from the original folder. When I do a search, the file comes up under the new name, but it does not show a path, and even though preview shows the contents, I can't open the document (Powerpoint) and I can't move the document. I tried "Copy" and paste but it doesn't work. I tried "Share" with Airdrop and iChat, but the file is inaccessible. When i try to rename the file, it says the filename is too long.
When I try to open it, it says the alias is not good, and asks if I want to fix the alias. I'm afraid to do that and lose all access to this document.
Right now, it feels like a ghost document - it is on the computer intact, but it is in an undisclosed location and inaccessible.
    Please help!!

I was able to resolve this by repairing permissions, even though no permissions error was listed specifically for that file.
I could also have recovered it through Time Machine, but I'm interested in knowing how not to have this happen again!
I was afraid of rebooting and possibly losing track even of the ghost.
I did not try EasyFind - I'll keep that in mind next time.
    Thanks for all the comments.

  • 10.3.9: G3 iMac won't run 'Repair Permissions' from Panther Disk!

I upgraded the memory to 1024 mb RAM and reinstalled Panther yesterday after leaving it on the shelf for a couple of years due to numerous problems running it on Kihei and Pismo (both with 256 mb RAM). The loading process went well; I ran the following utilities after loading all of the updates:
    TechTool 4.0.1
Disk First Aid from Panther disk
    Repair Permissions from Panther Disk
    Reset NVRAM, PRAM and OF
TechTool showed no problems and Disk First Aid said a repair was made. The first time I attempted to repair 'permissions' the process seemed to be about half way complete when it stopped and displayed the following error:
'Disk Management Tool' has lost contact with Disk Utility, close function and restart Disk Utility' or something to this effect.
Every attempt afterwards results in the same error message coming up almost immediately. iMac seems to be running properly at the moment; is it about to crash again like it did so many times in the past before I reverted to Jaguar? Any insight or advice will be welcome. I will post a copy of this on the 10.3 Panther board too.

Road Hazard: Try the instructions in this article. It is not possible to use the Panther installation disks to repair the permissions on a system which is experiencing this issue.
scapesuiter: A Kihei is one of the models which make up the first slot-loading iMac machines. These came out in October 1999 and were discontinued in July 2000.

I recently bought, from the original website of Adobe, Photoshop elements 13. However, when I go with my mouse pointer over the menu, It hangs or he works very slow. Does anyone have an idea how I can fix it? I have already downloaded updates, both from Adobe and Windows. I have a new pc with window 8.1.

It could be a coincidence, but I rebooted the machine and (knock on wood) PSE13 seems to be working ok.
