Can't see COM port

Hi,
I'm trying to read in serial data from an Arduino Uno board that's connected via USB on Windows.  I have the driver installed, and the Device Manager in Control Panel shows an "Arduino UNO (COM3)" listed under Ports (COM & LPT).  Furthermore, the serial monitor in the Arduino software is succesfully displaying values read from the board.
However, when I tried using the sample VI posted here (serial_arduino3.vi):
http://ni.i.lithium.com/t5/LabVIEW/Writing-terminal-COM-data-to-graph-using-Visa/m-p/1511430
I could not change the COM port in the front panel - only COM1 was listed, and when I clicked on "Refresh" nothing happened.
any suggestions?
thanks,
imran

Can you see it in max? Also have you just tried typing com3 into the control?

  • VISA "Find" not seeing COM port but Win7 sees it

Allo.  I'm trying to communicate via virtual com ports with a device with an FTDI chip.  The device with the FTDI chip has both a USB type B port as well as a 9 pin dsub port, and I need to verify both ports work.
I'm using a laptop with Windows 7 and my program is in LV 2010.  I have a Sabrent USB to serial cable to test the dsub port, and a standard USB cable to test the other port.  I've installed the latest FTDI drivers and when I plug in both cables and look under Windows Device Manager, I will see both of them under unique COM port settings (usually COM4 and COM 5).  So Windows sees and recognizes both virtual COM ports, and no yellow warnings.
However when I run the "VISA Find" function in LabView, it only sees COM5 (the Sabrent serial cable) but not the COM port using the USB type B cable.  I send the results of the "VISA find" to a display and it will show other ports, like the parallel port, so I know it's seeing more than one port.
Any ideas why Windows can see the two COM ports but the "VISA Find" function can only see one?  My guess is there's something with the FTDI driver set up.

Yes, but its not for the faint of heart!
You can probably do what you want by using the refresh "F5" in MAX or add this token
    [VISA-CONFIG]
    ShowRegisteredDevOnly = 0
    to C:\ProgramData\National Instruments\NIvisa\visaconfig.ini
Another thing to try is to recover the unused COM Port numbers each time you change the device.  By default Windows will "Save" those previously connected COM port numbers an if it sees the device again it will re-assign the old number.  This means that the COM number keeps getting larger and larger.  At some point the PC's BIOS will say that's rediculous and you will experience trouble.
    Programatically you could call
C:\Program Files\National Instruments\NI-Serial\NiPortConfig.exe to launch the same utility.  there is probably even and unpublished switch to click just that one big button for you but I can't find it.
It looks like you may be running into some part of this known issue

  • Can't See com.sap.portal.runtime.logon in list of PAR Files in Iview Wizard

    Hello All,
I am trying to create an iview from PAR file com.sap.portal.runtime.logon which is the logon par file that has the logon page. But when I right click a folder in the PCD and click on New From PAR Iview I try to find on the list of available par files and I don't find the one named com.sap.portal.runtime.logon
Can anyone tell me if this has to do with the portalapp.xml file from com.sap.porta.runtime.logon.par file.? or with the Security Zones defined in portalapp.xml? Or does someone know why this PAR file doesn't appear on the list and how can I make it appear on this list of par files?
Any helpful ideas to solve this issue will give rewarding points.
    Thanks
    Luis

    Hello,
What I want to do is to put the logon page in the light framework page so that the users can login from the anonymous portal. After I customize the logon page I want to create aniview in the detailed navigation.
If you want to see the jsp files that the com.sap.portal.runtime.logon.par file you have to go to the file system and copy the .par.bak file , rename it to .zip and all the files are there.
But my question is if this is a par file that is deployed in the portal , why I cant create an iview from this par file? From other forums I have read they say that creating an iview from this par file it will put the logon page where you want. But when I try to create an iview from PAR File the com.sap.portal.runtime.logon doesn't appear in the list of available par files.
Please help me on this and will give rewarding points.
    Thanks

  • Can I tristate a com port in 8423 card?

    Hi all
Am using 2 PXI 8186 to send commands to some COM based devices through a single RS485, 4 wire bus, but it is not possible to send commands to the device from both the PXI's. Only if one PXI is switched off the other PXI is able to send commands, i belive this is happening because both the PXI's are trying to take control of the bus. I wanted to know if there is a way in which i can tristate one of the PXI's com port so that other PXI can send the commands on the bus.
    Thanx for the reply
    Arun

    Hi Emilie
I have two 1031 PXI chassis, both the chassis have two 8423 cards (with four RS485 ports) and a PXI 8186. both the PXI have to comunicate with COM devices. the block diagram is attached along with this mail. my problem is if both the PXI's are switched on they don't communicate with the devices, only one of them can take control of the bus ata time, so i wanted to know if there is away in which i can place the com ports in 8423 cards in tristate.
    Thanx for the reply
    regards

  • Can't see any devices hooked up to Sata ports #5&6 on K9A2 Plat board

Hi there, I'm new to this forum.
    My virgin system consists of
    MSI K9A2 Platinum, Bios 1.4
    4 GB Corsair
    CoolerMaster Silent Pro M600
    AMD Phenom II X4 940
    Zalman CNPS9700NT
    Visiontek ATI Radeon 4850
    SuperTalent 64GB Sata II SSD
    Samsung SH-223 DVD-RW, Sata II
    LiteOn CD-RW IDE
I can get into BIOS and see devices hooked up to Sata ports #1 to #4, but I can't see Sata ports #5 & #6 with any device connected to those ports. I know these Sata ports are connected to a Promise T3 controller.
    1. Do I need to install the Promise driver first?
    2. Can I install the O/S on a disk drive hooked up to Sata port #5=
    Thank you for any help.

1 Yes, or load with F6 during install
    2 Yes.
The promise T3 has it own BIOS, you should see it when the controller is turned on as a separate boot page.

  • GPS Error on F3507g & Windows 7 "The GPS NMEA COM Port is not available" x200

    I have an X200 with a WWAN Card 43R153 (Ericsson F3507g) running Window 7.
The WWAN reliably connects to Vodafone but I can't get the GPS to work.
Device manager shows this port Enabled:-
Ericsson E3507G Mobile Broadband MiniCard GPS Port (Com8)
Driver Invogps.sys from Ericsson AB, Version 1.0.0.28  29/09/2008.
Thinkvantage GPS version 2.50 is also installed and Lenovo System Update says everything is up to date.
When I "Turn on GPS" or run 'Lenovs GPS"  I get this message:-
The GPS NMEA COM port is not available. You need to check the following things.
    - Another GPS application is using the COM port.
    - COM ports is disabled. You can enable the COM port in the Device Manager.
Location and Other Sensors shows nothing installed.
I've tried deleting all the drivers and reinstalling but not luck.
Has anyone else had the same problem and found a solution. I can't think of anything else to try.

If you are running a Windows 7 Weather Gadget on your desktop, try shutting it down entirely and see if that changes your GPS "in use" problem.

  • Programatically Changing Com Ports

I need to programatically change the COM port within LabView.
I am writing a program for clients and need to save the COM port settings within an exicutable. I was going to atchieve this by writing to an ini file. I cannot directly save the VISA variable but can save the following properties.
    Intf Inst Name
    Intf Type
    Intf  Num
The problem is I cannot write to these properties on the initialization state of the program. Is there a way I can save which COM port was being used from one session to another of an exe? Thanks in advance for all your help.
    Jesse

    Hi Jesse,
you can store it as a string. If you read the string from a file you can directly connect it as a com port selection. It also works if you typecast the string to the com Port type.

  • Programmatically assign com port

    Hi
I have an applicaton that uses USB-Serial adapters (Keyspan).  This system is in an open lab situation with multiple users and multiple laptops runing the LabVIEW program.  Each computer's registry assigns different comports to the Keysapn USB-Serial converter.  I've been able to query the registry and determine what com port Windows has assigned to Keyspan.
How do I take this info and programmatically assign a com port or Visa resource name that LabVIEW is to open?  Is there some simple Visa property node for "Resource Name" that I am not finding or is this more difficult than my awareness?
All of the laptop computers will be using Windows XP and LabVIEW 8.6 runtime engine.
    Thanks
    Glen

You can take the com port name as a string and wire it into the VISA functions.  It will generate a coercion dot, but it will work.

  • VISA unable to communicate with or see RS232 serial com port

I have a Dell Optiplex GX260 which has recently had Windows XP (Service Pack 2) re-installed on it.  National Instruments VISA is unable to communicate with the single RS232 serial com port on the computer.  Neither the "VISA Resource Name" control in LabVIEW 8.5 nor the "Measurement and Automation Explorer" can see the serial port.  Refreshing the list does not help.  "HyperTerminal"is able to both see and communicate with instruments connected to the serial port.  In Windows "Device Manager, the serialport appear in the list of hardware without any warnings.
Can anyone please help with suggestions as to how I may be able to get VISA in LabVIEW to 8.5 to see and communicate with the serial port?

Dell Optiplex GX260 (One RS232 serial port)
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2

Someone oughta apologize to the porr guy trying to get some help here.
Go ahead and put me on your ignore list please!
First, there is a plethora of messages on this forum and a plethora of information in the NI KnowledgeBase. If someone doesn't make the simple effort to take 5 minutes to perform a search what does that say? The issue being raised has come up, literally, dozens of times. Do you like answering the same question over and over and over and over and over again?
Second, my feelings are not unique. You will find that the irritation of people not bothering to do a simple search is shared by most of the regulars here. Why do you think search engines are available? Just so that ads can be sold?
Third, posting the SAME question in multiple threads is self-defeating. People who try to answer don't know what's already been suggested, and end up wasting their time as well as the poster's time in providing the SAME answer and/or suggestions that were provided in the other thread.
Fourth, simple forum netiquette. In both threads the poster essentially hijacked someone else's thread. This is frowned upon in just about every forum that I've ever seen.

  • How come I can't see my Ipod Touch on Itunes?

When I had the 9.2 version (the one before 10), just recently before I changed it to 10, my Ipod Icon wouldn't show up on Itunes so I couldnt sync my ipod or do anything, even though it was plugged and was charging. So, then I was like okay, maybe that's my cue to download the newest version of Itunes. Well once I did that, I could sync and see my ipod again on Itunes for a few days, but just now, I plugged in my Ipod and it's doing the same thing again! It's charging, but I can't see my ipod and its options. So I'm not sure if it's my Ipods problem or maybe it's not compatible to the version? I have the 2Gen Ipod touch. Anyone know?

  • Can two users share a COM port?

I have a system services Labview executable that opens a VISA session on a COM port.
But I also have a User Interface VI that needs to communicate with the device on same COM port.
Is this possible?  Can I use a Shared Variable to keep the VISA Resource name and have multiple users (one at a time) communicate with the device?

LabVIEW semaphores and all other LabVIEW objects like queues, notifiers, events, etc are not only process local objects only but even application context local only. While this makes no difference for built applications it is important inside the development environment as each LabVIEW project lives in its own application context (and tools started from the Tools menu run in yet another context). To do what you want to do, you need to implement some form of interapplication communication as Mark already mentioned. Or you can access named OS semaphores by calling OS APIs.

  • How can I write to multiple daisy-chained network serial addresses through a single COM port?

I have a VI to write to 3 PI Mercury motor controllers using daisy chained RS232 connected via a Prolific USB-to-Serial adapter. I know that it is possible to talk to the individual controllers because the PI terminal that I have recognises the addresses of multiple controllers and designates them Device 1,2,3. The VISA resource name when configuring the port just comes up as COM5 most of time, with seemingly no way to specify an address on that COM port. Occasionally the VISA resource is ASRL5::INSTR and as this is disconnected and re-connected, this address moves up a number (e.g ASRL7::INSTR). Can anybody tell me how I can configure my serial communication to allow me to individually communicate with the different devices through a single COM port?

What does the manual say about addressing? RS-232 is not multidrop, the resource name is correct, and there is no additional configuration needed. There would have be a specific write in order to address a certain controller.

  • I have a dvr and I want to monitor from my phone.  this worked when I had a Belkin router that let me open ports.  I use "canyouseeme" and it can't see 80, 9000 or 1025. How do I make them available?

I have a Lorex DVR that I want to monitor from my IPhone and IPad.  I used to be able to do this when I had a Belkin router (easy to open ports) but I bought the AirPort Extreme router and no longer have that capability.  When I use "canyouseeme" they can NOT see 80, 9000 or 1025.  Lorex says I need them all available in order to access.  Help!  And all the help I see refers to a earlier version of the AirPort Utility so I cant use those to look at anything, I cant find the same screens, I have version 6.1 (610.31).  I also don't really understand how ports work, so I need a pretty basic explanation.

Well...I went to the modem (Westell, WireSpeed), found the NAT settings, once again, I'm WAY over my head, I am assuming this is a TCP connection (as opposed to a UDP) and per Lorex my mobile devices will use port 1025.  So I gave it a "global port range" of 1-10 and I indicated that the "base host port" was 80, 1025, & 9000 (ports 1,2,3).  When I selected the 'enable' it asked for a "host devise" my choices are my IPhone, IMac and the IP address for the dvr, so I choose the dvr.  I still cannot connect and canyouseeme still can NOT find these open ports.  This is taking up my whole day! I don't know how people figure this stuff out.

  • HT2404 I just clicked on Software Updates; BUT nothing shows what's happening? How come I can't see the updates & time it will take?

Help!  I just got this Lion, and SO many changes & not necessarily for the better !
I went to the Apple icon, but  "Software Updates" did not show ... though I had deferred installing some updates ...
Finally it showed up, I clicked on it, saw the updates to do - BUT when I clicked on install - the "box" that usually shows the updates & how long to install - just disappeared! I can't get to it to see what's next. (I have to leave soon & will turn off the mac)
What's happening? How come I can't see the updates as they are installed, & how much time it will take?
How do I know IF they have been installed?  Is this the "new Normal" for Lion? Or is there a glitch in my mac somewhere?
How about updates you download from Apple (not bought) - they go to Downloads on the Sideboard, but are they installed automatically, & put where they belong too? Is there no more restart, etc.?
    - I just went to Systems Preference, to see the "Installed Software" - shows they were ... but don't I have to restart anymore? Are all updates now automatically placed where they belong?
Thanks to any who can help
PS One other question - just checked my "profile" & it has my email addy that's 4 years old... how do I change That?

Go to the Music section of your Library (very top-left corner) and see if your songs are there. The "Purchased" playlist may have been deleted or gotten corrupted, but if that happens it's not a big deal because your music should still be in your main Music Library.
If your music is NOT in the Music section of your Library, then go to the iTunes Store homepage and find the Quick Links list on the right side. At the top of that list, click Purchased and you can redownload all of your previous content that you might have lost.
