Can't Trash Files Outside of Home Directory

Hello
I have a problem I can't seem to trash files/directories outside of my home directory even if I have rwx!... not sure when it started.  Here's an example of my issue.
[jamie@simula vhosts]$ groups
wheel video audio optical storage camera jamie sshusers www-data
[jamie@simula vhosts]$ pwd
/srv/http/vhosts
[jamie@simula vhosts]$ ls -al
total 12
drwxrwxr-x 3 root www-data 4096 Aug 19 15:13 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jun 4 20:03 ..
drwxr-xr-x 5 jamie www-data 4096 Aug 4 21:58 doc.demurgatroid.net
[jamie@simula vhosts]$ mkdir testdir
[jamie@simula vhosts]$ ls -al
total 16
drwxrwxr-x 4 root www-data 4096 Aug 19 15:14 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jun 4 20:03 ..
drwxr-xr-x 5 jamie www-data 4096 Aug 4 21:58 doc.demurgatroid.net
drwxr-xr-x 2 jamie jamie 4096 Aug 19 15:14 testdir
[jamie@simula vhosts]$ gvfs-trash testdir
Error trashing file: Unable to find or create trash directory
But in my home directory (on the same partition mind you) I can trash a file (so it's obviously finding it this time)
[jamie@simula testdir1]$ pwd
/home/jamie/testdir1
[jamie@simula testdir1]$ ls -al
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 jamie jamie 4096 Aug 19 15:16 .

...and it shows up in the trash as expected!  What is preventing me from being able to trash files from other locations?  I've tested from various locations in my filesystem and it seems only inside /home/jamie can I trash anything.  I haven't been able to find out much about the error (like where it's attempting to find/create a trash and why there) besides the obvious, li  Here's some more info
* Using Gamin instead of FAM, didn't make any difference to my issue

I first noticed this doing html work in /srv/http/, I gave my user rwx and being able to delete files on the command line I assumed I'd also be able to right-click and 'Move to Trash' in Nautilus, nope.
--> If I 'Move to Trash' from within my home directory it goes to ~/.local/share/Trash/
--> If I 'Move to Trash' from anywhere else (even with permission) it fails because there is no .Trash-??? directory in that partition.
It works if I manually create it.
[jamie@simula ~]$ ls -al /home/jamie/.local/share/Trash/

There are dozens of these files in my home directory and they are still creating. Does anyone know how to get rid of them?

fig4latex README wrote:In a large project one would typically place the .fig files in a seperate
sub-directory.  In "example.tex" the figures are in a sub-directory named
"figs/" -- changing into that directory and running the fig4latex script

.eps (or .pdf) files which contain the graphic.
Perhaps you accidentally ran the fig4latex script and it created the Makefile.

  • Recreate default files in root home directory

    Hello,
I accidentally lost all files in the /root directory of a fresh OEL 5.5 installation. Is there a way to simply re-create the default files like .bashrc, .bash_profile, etc.?
    thanks,
    Markus
Edited by: Markus Waldorf on Aug 13, 2010 10:35 AM
    Guess I figured it out.
I found "rootfiles-8.1...noarch.rpm in the Server directory of the install DVD.
    I copied it to /root
rpm -qpl rootfiles-8.1....rpm lists the files .bashrc, .bash_profile, etc.
To restore the missing files I typed:
    rpm -e rootfiles
    rpm -ivh rootfiles-8.1-1.1.1.noarch.rpm

Now if a mere mortal user loses or seriously corrupts their initial dot files,
    you can do this:
    $ cd /etc/skel
$ cp -rv . ${HOME}/This is what the useradd(8) tool does.

  • Can't trash files on Windows Server

I have several .mov files that I created and copied to a Windows server on the network for viewing by my associates. But once they view them I can't trash them.
Every time I try I get an error that says "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privelages for some of the items."
I'm using the same computer I created them on and the same loggin. I looked at "Owners & Permissions" in Info and all it says it "You can read and write"
Not only that, but the Windows administrator can't delete them either.
I've tried "Cocktail" and "Trash it!" and get the same results. I can't repair permissions with Disk Utility because it's a network drive and it's Windows.
What else is there to do?

  • Lion can't trash files

    Hi there,
After having too many issues with trashing files after my upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion, I decided to burn a bootable DVD of Lion and wipe my hard drive. Then I did a clean install of Lion.
Now I am having the same issues, where trashing causes a freeze in the Emptying the Trash... pop up window. Basically nothing is trashing.
    Basically I have tried to:
    Force quit or relaunch finder.
Taken all files out of the trash and try to trash one at a time.
I did notice that maybe I had left an app open on the dock once, and I trash that file. However in Snow Leopard it will let me know that app cannot be trashed as it is still opened.
I quit this app and restarted my machine. However trash still cannot trash any files.
Can anyone help me? We don't have Apple Store in Hong Kong yet, so there is no Genius bar I can go to.
    Thanks!

I actually did some googling since I didn't find any others with the same issues on the Apple Discussions.
I found out it was some app that I tried to trash but it was still open. So it was corrupted and there was issues with it. I tried a few suggestions on Terminal but didn't do anything to resolve the issue.
However, I downloaded this app and it worked.
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/25821/raw-trash
You can see people are complaining that it can be done on the finder easily, but they don't tell you how.
It fixed my problem with the files so I am so happy.
If someone can put the right Terminal commands rather than have to pay for the Raw Trash (if it is that easy) then please let me know.
@Nikolai Yde - I didn't try it this way. Did you use Disk Utility from a Lion boot disk?

  • Can't get past "Choose BEA Home Directory" step in WL 923 Generic Install

I'm running Solaris 10 U8 on an x86 machine. I downloaded the server923_upgrade_generic.jar and I'm getting the following error when I try to install it.
    <------------------------ BEA Installer - BEA Products ----------------------->
    Choose BEA Home Directory:
    "BEA Home" = [opt/bea]
Use above value or select another option:
1 - Enter new BEA Home
    2 - Change to default [export/home/myuser/bea]
    ** Product is not installed.
Enter option number to select OR [Exit][Previous][Next]>
It doesn't matter if I use the default directory or not. I've even created the directory and set permissions on it before the installation, but that didn't work either.

This is resolved. Ended up being a faulty jar I had received.

  • Precompiling JSPs Outside Weblogic Home Directory

Using Weblogic Server 9.2. Was able to precompile JSPs in a war file with weblogic.appc at the command line with only the weblogic.jar inside the Weblogic installation directory in my classpath. I then translated this into an Ant task, and because the script may need to run on a box that does not have Weblogic installed, copied weblogic.jar to my build area and included that one in my classpath. It immediately began throwing NoClassDefFound exceptions. Discovered the "Class-Path" list of additional jars in the MANIFEST inside weblogic.jar, searched these jars and found all of the missing classes--except for the last one. The missing class is org/apache/bcelx/classfile/ClassParser, and the error I'm getting is "WARNING: unable to get an input stream for jar:file:D:\APPS\Java\jdk1.5.0_13\jre\lib\rt.jar!" followed by java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError. The error occurs in javelin.java.JavaClassFile.getParseTree() at line 178. There is a BCEL Apache project, but they have no mention of BCELX on their website. Anyone know where I can find this class, or source code for javelin.java.JavaClassFile?
Edited by willhandley at 06/06/2008 10:25 AM

    I tried the wlappc target:
    <target name="_precompile-jsp">
         <taskdef name="wlappc" classname="weblogic.ant.taskdefs.j2ee.Appc" classpathref="class.path" />
         <echo message="Precompiling JSPs in ${appfile}"/>
              <wlappc source="${appfile}" debug="true" verbosejavac="true" verbose="true" runtimeflags="-J-ms1024m -J-mx2048m"/>
    </target>
    But I keep getting:
[java] [wlappc] java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space
We've got quite a lot of jsps in our application. It seems the memory options are being ignored and it seems other people have experienced the same problem with the memory options being ignored when using wlappc and have switched to weblogic.appc.
When I switch to weblogic.appc I don't get the out of memory issue, though of course I'm still getting the initial stack trace reported. Any other ideas?

  • File Vault on HOme Directory with encrypted disk image in it

I want to try File Vault. My question is as follows: I have an encrypted disk image already in my home folder. It is a small 500 MB one. Can I keep that in there, as is, without problems, or is File Vault going to encrypt and encrypted image and cause some sort of problem?
Has anyone done this without issues?
I know the alternative is to unencrypt my current image and let File Vault handle the encryption, but I am curious about leaving it alone and trying File Vault.
    Thanks for any help,

    Good luck!
File Vault going to encrypt and encrypted image and cause some sort of problem?
FileVault is no more likely to scramble an encrypted disk image than it is to scramble the rest of your files. However, it is quite likely that it will scramble all of your files.
Has anyone done this without issues?
I have read many postings here in the discussion forums by people who have used FileVault and lost all of their data. Your mileage may vary. The only way I would use FileVault would be if I had an unencrypted copy of everything somewhere safe. Like you, I keep a small encrypted disk image for particularly sensitive files.

  • Can't Join Group Chats, Can't Receive Files, and Skype Home Doesn't Work

Okay, so back when Windows 8 was newer I got my current laptop and when I saw Skype's original Windows 8 design, I said hell no to that and downloaded an earlier version of Skype instead. When Skype did that big overhaul and stopped support for all older versions, I was at least happy to see it was back to being on the desktop instead of that Windows 8 pseudo-tablet nonsense. But at the same time, I stopped getting notifications from Skype Home - it always says it's unavailable. Some time after that, in between Skype's updates, I started having trouble with Groups. Every time someone tried to add me to one, I couldn't see it, even if they said I was in it on their screen. Eventually I had to start making all Group Chats myself, because at least then it worked for me... up until the 7.7 update. Now no matter how I try to get into a Group now, it straight up doesn't work. And before I got locked out of Groups entirely, I started having issues with files, right around when the "inline photos" thing happened - they just don't work when sent to me, and I can't send them either. When people try to send them to me it's just a grey image and something about how it's not supported or it didn't go through.  I've sort of just been patiently dealing with all of it until the newest update when Groups stopped working entirely and I was in the middle of trying to join an important conversation. I Googled that specific issue and found a ton of unresolved threads about it dating back to at least 2013, I believe. I tried every suggestion I could find - I restarted, uninstalled Skype, reinstalled Skype, restarted after uninstalling and then reinstalling... the list goes on. Every time I got it back, it was the same. Now I'm on Windows 8.1, and I don't know if that's related, but my boyfriend - who uses a Mac - is having none of these problems whatsoever, and he also has the latest version of Skype.  With older versions of Skype not available, I ended up trying Skype Web, and it's letting me see all the Groups, which is the most important thing but I'd really prefer to go back to the desktop version. All three of my issues might be unrelated, but they've all progressed as Skype has updated so I figured I'd try to get help for all of them. I'm at my wit's end, here. I use Skype for a pretty large portion of my online communication, and being unable to use Groups or get files is really crippling the experience.

    Hi,
    I have the same problem.
Since I'm using my new Laptop with Skype 7.0, I can't join to a group chat.
It's a public chat and joining is enabled.
With my former laptop and former Skype-Version, I never had this problem.
I could click on a link in the browser and joined to the group.
I have to chose a program.
Unfortunately Skype.exe seems not to be the right decision.
I'm asked to get a Skype-app, which I never needed with the old version.
Which kind of app do I need and how can I get the app or what else can I do?

  • Can't move or trash files

I hope this isn't something really stupid that I have overlooked or some feature I didn't know was on. I have been using Apple/Mac since the Lisa, yes the Lisa, and feel fairly confident that I know my way around but I'm stumped.
I have never had this happen before but on my MacBook using OSX 10.5.7 I suddenly can't move or trash some files. Not a certain type, some are .doc files, some .wmv files, nothing consistent. If I try to move a file to the trash it asks for a password, it then looks like its transferring the file, but then nothing goes to the trash. The file is still where it originally was.
I tried to just move the files to another folder. All that happens is that it copies the file to the folder an leaves the original file where it was. I CAN trash and delete the file copy that was created but not the original.
The files are not locked, the permissions are correct, etc. I don't know where to go from here.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

first verify your hard drive with disk utility. verify disk, not permissions. any errors? if not I would check that the permissions are correct despite what you say. are all those files in your home directory? select one of the files and do the following. open terminal and type
    ls -ladeO@
do not press enter yet. press space. then drag an offending file to the terminal window.
the result should look like this
    ls -ladeO@ /path/to/file
press enter in terminal. this will list permissions, flags and ACLs on this file. post the results please.

  • Macbinary file in home directory

Hello, I have noted lately that there is a mac binary file in my home directory, does anyone know what is this for? I did not notice this file a month and half ago. Everything else is ok with my mac but I am very curious about this file. I tried opening it and it did nothing. Any ideas? The name of the file is profiles.bin. Although I have used Mac for a while I do not know some details associated to Unix and Mac System. Appreciate any help, thanks.

    Hi, vitoman.
You wrote: "I googled it and did not find anything. "
This Google search turns up a couple of threads concerning this file on forums in Germany and Italy. The "Translate this Page" links yield some rough translations, at least one of which seems to imply it may be related to installing the latest Office update.
Another user seemed to indicate that he deleted the file but it later reappeared, implying it might be caused by a Startup or Login Item. If that's the case, ee my "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ for steps that might help you with this problem.
If you speak/read German or Italian, perhaps you can get more from those Google results than the translations yielded.
    Good luck!

  • Can we put config.xml outside of domain directory?

    Hi,
I am currently working on Admin server failover under weblogic 8.1 clustering.
I want to put config.xml outside of domain directory, if hosted machine of admin server is unreacheable, I want to build the admin server from another box using the config.xml we kept aside of domain directory.
Idea is, All configuration files (startWeblogic.sh, config.xml etc.,) want to keep another box, we use these configuration files from admin server hosted machine. Please let me know, whether this is feasible? if so, Please suggest me solution.
              Thanks,
              Murthy P.

yes, we can place config.xml outside of domain directory.
We have to include in startup script as,
              -Dweblogic.RootDirectory=/u/murthy/examples/config/
              Thanks,

  • I have to give password to file changes in my home directory

From yesterday, when I try to change files in my home directory, a dialog box pops up to ask the password.
That happens even after make the file permission to 644. I tried to change the whole /Users/myplace permisson, but it doesn't work.
The owner of the file is set as myself, but there might be something broken with this.
This actually made everything not working, dropbox takes for ever to delete a file, evernote can't even start and on and on.
I just happen to add New Person with the same user name that I use now in Sharing, but I'm not sure this is the cause of the problem.
How can I solve this issue? How can I delete/move files in home directory without giving passwords?
    Thanks,
    smcho

Your username is "smcho"? So your home folder is named "smcho"?
Yeah for the System Folders "Movies", "Music", "Pictures", "Library", "Public" and "Desktop" there is an ACL, so you can't rename or delte them.
It's just for your safety because these folders are used by the system and should be not renamed or removed!
Additionally you made something wrong by chmodding your home folder to 644 - or as it showing here to 730!?!
Normally the user home folder and the included folders should be at 700 and the Public folder at 755. Additionally the folders have an acl for "everyone deny delete".  so something get messed up!
