Can't turn dma on [solved]

Hi,
I'm creating a new ext3 partition on a new disk, but I can't turn DMA on, I get the following error:
[14:43][root@mouse256:~]$ hdparm -d1 /dev/hda2
/dev/hda2:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Invalid argument
using_dma = 0 (off)
I don't boot from this disk, arch is installed on a software raid on 2 SATA disk, the SATA disks and the raid works perfectly. It's the PATA disk which is causing troubles. (/dev/hda1 is a windows/ntfs partition, /dev/hda2 is fresh ext3 partition)
okay, for the rest a description of my system:
I'm using a nforce2 motherboard (nforce2 controller for the ide disks, silicon image for the sata).

I couldn't find a solution here on the forum or using google, so I hope someone can help.

Bios wasn't the problem (I was rather shure about this, but I did check it anyway), but when I rebooted, the problem was suddenly fixed
I found what was causing the problem:
As I do not use this drive much, I put it in sleep-mode after booting (hdparm -Y /dev/hda), this saves me energy, heath and noise.  But is seems that waking up the drive disables the dma mode...
If someone has a solution for this feel free to mention, but I can live with it for now

Hi, i had the same problem. Try to find the file "apple" or "itunes" don't know it anymore exactly. • Hi all, I've got very unpleasant  issue with my iPhone 4s on ios 5.1 - it can automatically turn on the 3G even if my local operator does not have the 3g coverage. What I should do to solve this problem? (p.s. even want to jail it!!!))

    Hi!
I've got very unpleasant issue with my IPhone 4s, it can automaticaly turn on the 3G even if my local mobile operator does not have 3G coverage.
I hate it, 'cause my battery dies in a couple of hours. How can I solve this problem. It is very annoying. I just thinking about jailing!!!
    Thanks in advance.

There are NO carriers that legitimately offer the iPhone in Ukraine according to this list: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1937
I'm not talking about carriers that support 3G, I'm talking about AUTHORIZED iPhone carriers. There is NO SUPPORT available for iPhones on networks other than those who are authorized BY APPLE to carry the iPhone.
The iPhone should work with any compatible GSM carrier. If your carrier is not on the list I linked to, you will have to work with them to resolve any problems. There is nothing else anyone can do for you.

I am experience a similar problem, my iphone 4 either turns off by itself or I am unable to answer a call. Everything just blocks. After contacting 2 different apple service spots still no answer as to how can we fix the problem. Worse, I am unable to revert back to ios 5.1.1 where everything worked just fine.

You sould be able to sync both ways.  Check your default calendar on your phone by going to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>scroll down to the calendars section to Default Calendar.  Check to be sure you have selected your mac calendar as your default (and not, for example, On My iPhone).  Then enter a new event on your phone and sync to confirm that it appears on your mac.

  • Can't turn on journaling

I had a backup firewire disk that I had to turn journaling off on, to work with another machine. Now I can't turn it back on. Disk Utility reports failure, and the command line options does the same thing with a barely more informative message:
    mt@laptop $ sudo /usr/sbin/diskutil enableJournal /Volumes/OneTouch
An error occured journaling the filesystem: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)
I'm stuck because now I can't use Time Machine, which requires a journaled volume. I can't even get my old backups off of it.
    Any clues appreciated.

First read this article: Disk Utility reports 'Underlying task reported failure' (-9972). If nothing there helps then see the following:
How to Deal with a -9972 Error
    Contributed by Fumiaki Kawashima
The error message, "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)" is a serious filesystem error in the Mac OS X Core Foundation. The problem can also lead to other critical errors such as "Keys Out of Order," "Invalid node structure" and/or "Invalid sibling link." The causes and scenarios vary. Troubleshooting a solution may depend upon computer configuration and whether the -9972 error is accompanied by other critical errors. This issue can also lead up to a kernel panic. If the error occurs when an external FireWire device is connected, disconnect it until you verify the device's compatibility.
    Symptoms:
In most cases, you are unable to restart from Mac OS X.
    * A volume is grayed out or not mounted with or without a kernel panic.
    * A folder with a flashing question mark may appear.
    * A bad partition map may be reported.
    * A target disk mode solution may not work.
    * Most likely, Disk Utility, Norton Utilities, TechTool and DiskWarrior cannot fix the issues.
    * The high level disk format (Standard format) may unable to perform.
    * You may unable to re-initialize the hard drive.
    * A disk physically malfunctions in the worst case.
Example of an accompanied error message:
DiskWarrior normally fixes 1 to 6, but cannot fix errors 7 to 10 if the symptoms are very bad. There is no definite case.
    01. Volume check failed
    02. Invalid B-tree Header
    03. Invalid map node
    04. Invalid extents entry
    05. Invalid clump size
    06. Incorrect block count file
    07. Invalid node structure
    08. Overlapped extent allocation
    09. Keys Out of Order
    10. Invalid sibling link
    Related documents:
What to Do When It Finds an Error

    Possible causes:
    * Third-party FireWire device or enclosure, or other peripheral devices.
    * Third-party mass storage drives or PCI card issues.
    * Incompatible third-party kernel extensions.
    * Mac OS X installer disc is improperly treated.
    Solutions:
If possible and needed, back up data before troubleshooting. Methods (4) and (5) are for Power Mac desktop computers other than G5 models. The best bet is method (4) if you encounter multiple bad errors.
    1. Unplug the power cord. Disconnect all third-party hardware except Apple keyboard and mouse before you start.
    2. Do NOT re-install any third-party software/hardware until you completely solve the issue(s) and carefully investigate the compatibility with Mac OS X 10.3.x you install.
    3. If another critical error "Invalid sibling link" is detected at any phases, disconnect and reconnect all internal power cords and data cables for hard drives and any ATAPI device. To do so, you may need to read the computer's CIP Instructions in advance. Normally, you do not need to remove third-party RAMs.
    Method 1:
    (1) Start up from Mac OS X 10.3.x Panther Full Install CD or DVD.
    (2) Re-initialize and re-partition the hard drive. RECOMMENDATION: Select "Zero all data" option if "Invalid node structure" or "Keys Out of Order" error is detected.
If this method is of avail, go to Method 2 or greater.
    Method 2:
    (1) Start up in Mac OS 9.2.2 and shut down the computer.
    (2) Start up from a copy of a Disk Warrior bootable CD for Mac OS 9.2.2.
    (3) Run DW to fix the damage(s).
    Method 3:
    (1) Unplug the computer.
    (2) Find a second ATA drive and jumper it as MASTER. Jumper the hard drive in question as SLAVE. Verify the jumper pin settings.
    (3) Install Mac OS 9.2.x system on the MASTER drive, and update it to Mac OS 9.2.2.
    (4) Start up from Mac OS 9.2.2. Re-initialize and re-partition the damaged hard drive with Drive Setup using the "Zero all data" option. Unplug the computer and reconfigure the jumper pin setting on the repaired drive for MASTER and the second drive for SLAVE.
    (5) Restart from Mac OS X 10.3 Panther full install CD. Re-initialize and re-partition the repaired drive to install Mac OS X 10.3. Update to Mac OS X 10.3.7 via Software Update. Repair the disk permissions after each Mac OS X 10.3 installation and Mac OS X 10.3.7 update.
You may want to try starting up from Mac OS 9.2.x Full Install CD instead of from (2) to (4).
    Method 4:
    (1) Find a desktop computer that has an ATA controller PCI card (SCSI environment) and has two hard drive bays. This will make your damaged drive appear as a quasi-SCSI hard drive. Mac OS 9.2.2 must be pre-installed on the computer. I recommend a host computer that installs an Ultra DMA/xxx or xxx (ATA-x) interface equal to or better than the damaged drive with backwards compatible.
    (2) Set the host computer's primary drive as MASTER and your damaged hard drive as SLAVE and install the damaged drive in the second drive bay of the host computer. Verify properly configured jumper pin settings in advance.
    (3) Start up the host computer from Mac OS 9.2.2. Launch the "Drive Setup" utility. Re-initialize the damaged disk on the second drive using the "Low level format" option. It may take hours but less than "Zero all data" option. Note: Normally, a low level format with a quasi-SCSI drive takes much less (30 - 40%) time than an ATA configuration drive. Note that "Low level format" fixes all difficult logical damage.
    (4) Put the fixed disk back in your computer's drive bay. Re-configure the jumper pin setting to MASTER before you place it into the drive bay of your computer.
    (5) Restart from Mac OS X 10.3 Panther full install CD. Re-initialize and re-partition it to install Mac OS X 10.3. Update to Mac OS X 10.3.7 via Software Update. Repair the disk permissions after each Mac OS X 10.3 installation and Mac OS X 10.3.7 update.
Note that Panther's Disk Utility does not implement a "Low level format" option.
    Method 5:
If Method 4 does not work or fix the damaged drive, let me know. You may need an advanced technique to fix it if the drive is physically not a problem.
    OPTION:
Purchase a known good hard drive that conforms to your computer's ATA specification. Fix the damaged hard drive some other time. Nowadays, prices of hard drives are inexpensive.

You are absolutely WRONG. Apple bears no responsibility in this at all. YOU purchased a STOLEN phone. You are guilty of receiving stolen property at best. Take it back to wherever you bought it and demand a refund. Failing that, turn it over to the police. You got ripped off. I'm sorry you wasted your money, but there is NOTHING Apple or anyone else can do for you. Only the rightful owner of the phone can unlock it.

  • How can I turn off lots of failure popups when starting my mac?

    Dear community!
Everytime I change my network, I get failure popups caused by missing server connection. How can I turn these messages off?
I know the reason: at work I have lots of connections to different server and of course I don't have them at home.
It's boring to click up to 10 times at these error popups to close them.
Does anybody know how I can solve this issue?
THX in advance for your help!
    Regards, Tina

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
    Boot in safe mode.
Log in and see whether you still have the problem. If you don't, it's caused by one of your login items or a system modification that loads at startup or login. Ask if you need help identifying it. A common offender is "Adobe Synchronizer," which is a component of some Adobe products.
    Step 2
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/PDF Services
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. A folder may open. If it does, move the contents to the Desktop, or to a new folder on the Desktop. Log out and log back in. Test. If there's no change, put the items you moved back where they were and continue.
    Step 3
    Open the folder
    ~/Library/Preferences
as in Step 2 and move the following items in that folder to the Trash, if they exist:
    com.apple.recentitems.plist
    loginwindow.plist
Log out and back in again, and test.
    Step 4
Other possible causes are references in the iPhoto, iTunes, or iMovie library pointing to the server, and bookmarks in the Preview application.
    Try rebuilding the iPhoto library.

  • N95 turn flash light on,and can't turn it off- Pro...

Hi, I have N95-1 firmware v21.0.016. I didn’t decide yet to update new v30, because some reviews I thought that it’s better to skip this and wait next.
The problem I experience with my device is that some time (it’s happened few times) in ordinary use (not camera use), my flash light (camera light) turn on and wont turn off even if I turn phone off. I tried removing the battery and the light goes off. As soon I put the battery back in the light comes on again even phone is still off. When I turn camera on (by opening it), light go off but when I close it it’s turn on again. I find solution, to take any picture, and after that everything goes back to normal.
Does any one else had experience like mine? What can provoke this behavior?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    First thanks for response.
Rrangel, thanks for advice, but I can turn my flash off. It simple, taking picture (and that is the only way for that) and after that everything go in normal. I can close camera and continue to use my phone normally (no flash light on). I can turn phone off and on again, it’s will work normally and no flash light problem. However, this might happened again.
I have 4 GB takems memo card in the phone. And phone wasn’t in contact with water or steam, it never fall or had any defect.
First I thought it’s because some third part application. When it’s happened first time, phone was running Rotate Me, Flip Silent (that I was just installed and test how it’s will work), Advanced Call Manager, and I was rejecting some phone call. I thought it’s because Flip Silent, but second time, phone didn’t run any of those applications, I was just change theme and flash light turn on.
First time I find out that, removing battery and restarting of the phone will not help, so I simply take picture, like first time (delete picture immediate after), and continue to use phone normally. I’m just confused what the reason is?

Why is it that you can still use buttons??????........
You should not be able to turn off unless you have the code!!!!!!
And with that defect corrected imagine how safe it would make the consumers if everyone knew that if a phone was locked, it was really locked!!!

You cannot turn it on remotely. Griping and complaining won't make it any better.
What To Do If Your iDevice Is Lost Or Stolen
If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if Wi-Fi is enabled on the device. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your device for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.
If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

To turn off displaying net names on your schematic:
Go to Options > Sheet Properties. The Sheet Properties dialog shows.
    Select the Circuit tab
In the Net Names box, set to Hide All
These settings are sheet (page) specific. Depending on your design, you may need to specify this for multiple sheets.

I have upgraded my iPhone 5 with iOS7 and I can´t turn on location services. I have already restored the instalation of oOS 7 twice but no change. This should be the improvement of apple software? Does anybody have similar problem? Do you know how to solve it?

A workaround is to reinstall lazy apps, mostly for those that were restored but don't appear on notification center, eg. Whatsapp. In my case I have more than 500 apps installed.
We need a correct solution for this problem.
I also had this problem on the past moving from 4s to 5.
And now from 5 to 5s.
The only notifications working after restore in my iPhone are those from Facebook.
