Can the magic mouse be set to emulate a right click when tapped?

I recently purchased an Apple Magic Mouse.
I also have a MBP with a track pad which I have configured to do a right click when I tap it.
The small problem I have is that the AMM needs to be pressed similar to the way the track pad used to before I configured the tap-to-click.
Can this be done for the magic mouse.
Thanks for any assistance.
Barry

Hello there, bholtzkener.
To set up secondary click on the mouse the following article should provide very helpful:
OS X Mountain Lion: Use an Apple Magic Mouse
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11298
The screen where you make the choice looks like this:
Keep in mind, the mouse should be used with the Apple logo at the base of the hand and should provide the "click" sensation when you tap the other side with finger tips.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
Cheers,

  • Ideas to make the magic mouse more comfortable and avoid mistaken right clicks...

I love the magic mouse, but it should be curved.   the index finger keeps ending up on the right side so i accidently right click ALL THE TIME!!!
Either curve the top half, or narrow the bottom half, so the thumb can sit farther down, allowing the hand to turn a bit on it and keep the index finger on it's on side!!!!
OR raise the center from bottom to top, so you can FEEL when your hand shifts over for comfort and puts the index finger past center.
OR allow us to set the dividing line between right and left shifting over to the side more, depending if we are left or right handed.
have you guys not figured out yet that the thumb sets lower than the other fingers??????

No one here can change the mouse.

  • Can the Magic Mouse be paired with the original iPad?

Can the Magic Mouse be paired with the original iPad ?

No, neither the first nor the second gen iPad supports a mouse - there is no cursor for a mouse to control, all you have on the iPad is an insertion point when entering or amending text

  • Can the magic mouse and magic trackpad be used together

Having just purchased a new iMac with a wireless keyboard and magic mouse, I want to add a keypad and I'm looking at purchasing the Magic Trackpad with the Mobee Magic Numpad overlay (and connecting it to the keyboard with the Twelve South Magic Wand).
What I need to know is - if using the Magic Trackpad, can I still use the Magic Mouse at the same or must it be one or the other (would there be any conflicts)?

Yes, they can both be enabled at the same time as can the keyboard.

  • Can the Magic Mouse be configured to not spring open files?

The Magic Mouse I received with my PowerMac springs open files, that is clicking once opens every single file. I am constantly having to close files that have automatically opened. It's a real interruption of the work-flow. Is there any way to stop this from happening. There seems is no remedy for this in Preferences.

Thank you for your response and it turns out you are on the right track. After posting the question, I went back once again to the Magic Mouse preferences and where I had set the double mouse click speed to slow, thinking that might prevent files from sprining open, I turned the double click speed up to the fastest setting. Now the files don't automatically launch on single click. I'm a bit slow I guess, I was thinking the opposite way. Now of course I have to click like a banshee to get the darn thing to open, but it's better that way. I'll fiddle with the setting... Thanks again.

  • Can the Magic Mouse work without clicking?

I thought it would have the same options as the Magic Trackpad on my Macbook Pro, but see no way to open/close programs, etc. without clicking. I have an injury that makes the clicking action painful, so have been grateful for the tapping option on the trackpad, and bought the Magic Mouse thinking it would have the same features. I get the swiping between pages, scrolling etc. Anyone know if I'm missing something on this? The demos on the settings didn't give the option, so I'm thinking the Magic Mouse isn't as talented as the Magic Trackpad.

If you want to, 'er, "teach" it more tricks you will need a third party utility like MagicPrefs.
    Other mouse utilities:
    BetterTouchTool
    SteerMouse
    MagicDriver
I don't know if any of these guys will do exactly what you want but it may be worth looking at them.

  • Magic Mouse: Why Does It Need to Be Clicked When Restarting or Booting from Shutdown to Get Detected All the Time?

Hi. I'm using Snow Leopard via USB external drive (the hardisk is blank- testing something with Leopard). When I start the late 2009 iMac and boot with the Option Key, I need to click the Magic Mouse all the time so the mouse can be detected and move the cursor to the Snow Leopard icon ( in its boot menu ). After the Magic Mouse is detected, it's good from there.
Is this normal or there's something wrong with the Magic Mouse? The keyboard doesn't need to be pressed though to be detected, it's detected each time.
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless, Rev. 21:4

I cannot see why you should have to click the magic mouse in order for it to be detected ... unless you have changed the batteries.  See my notes which cover the points made in your other recent post.
Batteries.  Here are a few notes I've put together.
Whether you use regular or rechargeable batteries you should buy the best. Discounted or unbranded batteries are more likely to give a depleted performance and may be of irregular size, often leading to connection problems.
Apple’s own brand, Eneloop and Energiser appear to be the best. Rechargeable batteries for the standard Magic mouse are unlikely to exceed eighteen days before needing a recharge although the mouse itself can be a limiting factor.  I have seen reports that some Logitech mice vastly exceed this.    Apple may suggest more in their sales blurb but this is a realistic expectation.  The benefit (if you are organised) is that you can always have charged batteries available.  Regular batteries will give you between 25 and 35 days before they need to be replaced. Note.
Never mix old and new batteries or rechargeable and regular.
The notes above are based on my personal experience, not shutting down my machine and using it for around four hours per day.  Note.  Monitors do not always faithfully report battery strength, particularly the rechargeable ones.
When checking your mouse or keyboard batteries ... Turn off the device. Remove the batteries, Clean the terminals both inside the battery compartment and the batteries themselves. Replace or renew both batteries. Turn on the device.  You should get a blinking green light if the device is paired. Click the mouse to activate it.  The green light becomes steady.

  • HT4273 Can the Magic Trackpad be set up to run on a Windows 8 computer...not in Boot Camp but an actual Windows Computer?

My computer is a MacBook Pro using the Magic Trackpad and unfortunately I also have had to purchase a Windows 8 computer to teach Windows 8 touch gestures. I would much rather use the Trackpad which I have fallen in love with, on the new Win 8 machine.
    Thanks for any responses

it will show on itunes front summary page the date of last backup, but you can also find it in preferences, by going to edit - preferences - devices - you will see all of your backups.

  • How do you hold the Magic Mouse?

I've had my Magic Mouse for about a month now and the one thing that's really got me on the verge of swapping it out is how I inadvertently move the canvas when I'm working with Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.  With standard mice you don't really have to care about the state of your index finger  after you click or how it may slightly touch the surface as you move the mouse around, but with the MM it's something to be conscious of.  When I stop to inspect the mechanics of how I use a mouse, it's amazing how often my index finger inadvertently bounces back and forth from the surface.  When I'm lifting up, setting back down, considering a click, scrolling, etc.  I'm gonna try to consciously keep my index finger down when I'm moving the mouse around in hopes that it'll stop this unwanted result.
So how do you hold the Magic Mouse?  Is your index finger always down when you move it around?

Good question. Seems i use the middle finger for everything except for when I need to swap desktops or do other stuff with mission control.

  • I use an iMac (27" 3.4) and have problems with the Magic Mouse. It does not use contact, but opens useless and unrelated submenus with every click, even on the empty desktop. I can't shift, open or close pages. Has anyone out there the same problem?

I use an iMac 27" (mid 2011). Until recently I had OSX 10.6.8 installed, but both, the HDD and SSD had to be replaced, and I lost all the memory.
After the repair through Apple Care I had OSX 10.7.5. (Lion) installed, which developed a Magic Mouse problem.
Unlike with most users, I have no problems with connection, but grapple with a different kind of erratic behaviour.
All fancy stuff is turned off in the mouse preferences. When I try to move, open or close pages, unrelated submenus pop up and hinder the
required task. No matter how often I click, these menus stay there, and they even come up when clicking on the bare desktop.
It renders the mouse absolutely useless, as no work can be done with it.
The first 'Magic Mouse' had depleted batteries every few days, despite switching it off after use.
I was supplied a new Mouse, which does better battery-wise, but the problems are the same. I can't get a result by clicking on any link, due to
the pop-up menus, so both 'Magic Mice' are totally useless.
At present I am using the old USB mouse from my Mac Pro, and that works still o.k.
The problem are not the mice, but the software. The first 2 weeks after installation of OSX 10.7.5 the Magic Mouse worked though.
I have no idea as to what the reason may be.
Has anyone in the community ever experienced that particular problem. Any hint would be welcomed.
    Thank you!

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee

  • Can Application Switcher Be Assigned To The Magic Mouse ?

I have been a Might Mouse user now since it was released and it's been a very productive mouse... allowing me lots of options while I navigate my finder and files... and assigned Application Switcher to the track ball nipple was for me a must have feature... and now my whole workflow has now become based on this simple feature. I recently purchased a new MacPro 12 Core with Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad. The Magic TrackPad I just can't get my fingers adjusted to... so I have counted that out... but the new Magic Mouse I like... I like the way it feels in the hand... I like the wireless feel about it... but the lack of the track ball is proving a difficult adjustment. I have started using CMD TAB but that's proving less effective as I'm sometimes getting mixed up with key stroke shortcuts for Adobe Acrobat... for Quitting etc...
I need to decide what mouse to use... as switching between both is even more confusing. Is the Magic Mouse the absolute future... so should I just stick with that... and adapt... or go back to me seamless Mighty Mouse workflow.
If I could assign the Application Switcher to the Magic Mouse I would stay with it I think.... it's the lack of support for the key feature is proving to be the deal breaker.
Anyone have any comments, advice, suggestions. All comments would be much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Anthony

    Hi-
Can't predict the future, but I understand the dilemma with regards to which is a better mouse.
For app switching, there is a way to do such, but at the cost of a lost function:

  • HT204387 iPAD mini iOS 6.1 can pair keyboards, why not the Magic Mouse?

I need to access a site that requires click & drag with my iPad Mini. Has anyone figured out a work-around to get the MAGIC MOUSE to pair with the iPAD Mini? I am having trouble understanding why it won't pair.  Can Apple make an update to iOS 6.1 to include the MM?  It already can pair many other Bluetooth accessories, why not mice?

Thank you KPenguin. I understand now, though I still can't 'click & drag' items in Kano games.  The 2 second hold that works for rearranging app icons doesn't seem to work.  Guess I'll be returning my new MMouse, which is a shame. I was looking forward to playing around with all it's cool features! :)
Note to self: Mouse needs active cursor to work! Haha (it's a duh moment here!!) o.O

Yes and no. The gestures wont work so it just becomes a regular scroll-wheel mouse.
