Can this damage the USB ports of my iMac?
I was inserting a USB into the port in the back of the iMac, and when it was inserted, it didn't look like the USB went in all the way... (I could see part of the USB sticking out a bit... I'm not used to this because my old Windows laptop didn't let them stick out). So, I tried pushing the USB in further, but it didn't go any further in, at which point I realized the USB was already in all the way.
Am I just being paranoid? Or could pushing the USB in too hard potentially damage the computer or the USB port?
If you really tried I am sure you could damage the computer but if it still works don't worry about it.

The USB ports on my iMac (purchased in 2013) were working fine. Suddenly, clicking my mouse elicits no response. When I move the iMac to the Apple store, it works fine -- and it works fine in other rooms in my house. Why won't it work in my study?
Have you tried plugging the mouse into another USB port on your Mac? Try gently wiggling the connector at each end of the calble while trying to use the mouse.

How can I test the usb port on my Time Capsule to see if it is working?
Ever since lightening struck nearby (which took out our internet and copy machine) the printer I had connected to the usb port on my Time Capsule in my office has has failed to print through the TC. I can plug the printer directly into my MacBookAir and can print just fine. So there is nothing wrong with the printer nor the usb cable.
I've turned off and unplugged the printer with the usb cable connected & disconnected to the TC, no change. I've unplugged the TC, no change. I've opened the printer utility several times, and always get the "offline" error. I open the print queue, and it says the printer is not connected. I reinstalled the driver for the printer, still the same thing.
I'm starting to wonder if the usb port on my Time Capsule got fried. Any help anyone can give in trying to see if the usb port even functions anymore would be greatly appreciated.
My Time Capsule is model no. A1409.Power is not likely to be killed .. it is the data components that are more fragile.
So you do have power which as you say is why the USB flashes.. but you don't have signal.
The only other thing you can do is use USB powered hub.. if you have one handy.. but I would not go out and buy one.
A damaged board is impossible (at cost less than replacement TC) to repair. And repairers do not like working on stuff damaged by lightning as components that did survive were stressed.. the transistor junctions become liable to fail at any time.. so you repair it and it just keeps coming back as not working. Sorry if you cannot use it without USB junk it and buy a replacement. A second hand Gen3 is about the best of them it seems.
You can also buy an ethernet to USB print server.. but a new ethernet or wireless network printer is probably near to the same price.
You can hunt ebay for second hand USB print servers.. or airport express, extreme or TC.. often you can find something suitable for just a few dollars if you shop well. Since you don't need the latest greatest to do this sort of job.. and people are disposing of things like USB print servers as soon as they buy network printers. -

I-MacAs has been said really, the less you pay the less quality, and flexibility you'll have on your sound.
For example, you could run on a 'Rocksmith Real Tone Cable' if you just wanted a cheap way of getting your guitar into the computer for some fun. Probably cost you $30 (I live in UK so can't be sure). If you're starting out then this could be considered the best option for dipping your toe in the water without spending too much.
You won't get a really nasty sound out of that if you can process it yourself in Logic afterwards to clean up, but it won't be great either. I imagine it could get quite noisy so you'd need to get heavily gating your guitar sound, if you're playing something clean that's not ideal.
Longterm, you're far better getting a decent audio interface, as you need something to play sound back through, if you have different input sources you usually have to create an aggregrate device on osx to use multple sources at once esp if you're using the built in audio chip on your mac to listen.
All this can add latency and possibly sync issues (i.e. drum tracks not in time with audio etc.), although generally it's not too bad, but it's something worth knowing if you want to do things on the cheap without buying a dedicated interface.
What kind of money did you want to spend? Are you thinking super duper cheap, and then see how it goes and maybe spend more in future if you enjoy it? Personally i would say £100-150 would get your something good to start with, like that Presonus audiobox, there's a lot of options like that available.
My local music shop always push the alesis io2 on new users, gotta say i'm not that overly impressed with it. Line 6 stuff will be good however, but limiting. Although i beleive you get their software for free with it? -
Is there a difference between the USB ports on an imac 2010 and macbook air 2011?

He has a special keyboard on USB.
When I connect it to his or my iMac 2010, we need to reboot several times until the KB is recognised.
When I connect that same KB to my macbook air 2011 it has no issues at all.
The iMacs are 2.7GHz i5 running Lion.

To start up your computer in Apple Hardware Test:
Press the power button to turn on your computer.
Press and hold the D key before the gray startup screen appears. If Apple Hardware Test does not start up, see the Additional Information section at the end of this article.
Note: Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet. These computers will start up to an Internet-based version of AHT if the hard drive does not contain AHT. An Internet-enabled connection via Ethernet or Wi-Fi is required to use this feature.
It takes a minute or so for Apple Hardware Test to start up and inspect your hardware configuration. While this is taking place, an icon appears on the screen:
When the process is complete, select your language and click the right arrow. If you aren't using a mouse, you can use the up and down arrows to select a language and then press the Return key.
The Apple Hardware Test console appears. You can choose which sort of test or tests to perform:
To perform all of the basic tests, click the Test button or press the "T" key or the Return key.
To perform a more thorough diagnostic test, select the "Perform extended testing" checkbox under the Test button before you click the Test button.
Your test results will appear in the window in the bottom-right of the console.
To exit AHT, click Restart or Shut Down at the bottom of the window. -

After ejecting a disk plugged into the USB port using Finder, I am now getting "The disk was not properly ejected" message. This didn't used to happen. How can this be corrected?
When you right (control) click on the disk and click eject "disk name", do you pull it immeadiatly or wait a few seconds for it to unmount? Try waiting and see if you get the same message. If you do, when the disk is connected go to applications/utilities/disk utility, after opening DU, select the volume in question from the left side bar and try a permissions repair, you may also run verify disk and see if it comes up with any errors (they will be in red)

If you have some different page, try the quick fix in Fred McD's reply.
If the sites are missing, did you use the Reset feature? That will clear the storage associated with the new tab page. I'm not sure it's possible to recover from that; you probably need to rebuild your page from scratch as you browse.
For possible future reference, here is how to access the hidden setting for the page to display on new tabs:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''newtab''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the '''browser.newtab.url''' preference and enter your preferred page:
* ''Page thumbnails (default)'' => about:newtab
* ''Blank tab'' => about:blank
* ''Built-in Firefox home page'' => about:home
* ''Any other page'' => full URL to the page
Press Ctrl+t to open a new tab and verify that it worked. Fixed?
Some gotchas:

Cannot tell is the initial question was sent so here goes again. I can synch items entered into MS Calendars with my iPad... this is done automatically when I connect the iPad to the USB port. I have found an alternative and much quicker way to transfer photos to my ipad. Having exhausted the Apple route with its connection kit, I stumbled upon a YouTube video showing how you could use an external sd card reader / USB to transfer pictures. I did a quick search on eBay and found a device that would work with the ios7 update. Hey presto it works! (I purchased an sd card and a sd card adapter for my Canon 350d) plus the little sd card reader from eBay ( for quarter of the price ) of Apples connection kit ( which didn't work)
Come on Apple why can suppliers in the Market place produce accessories that work better than your own kit? You are missing an opportunity and frustrating customers no doubt. Could do better ! -
I am selling my Macbook Air 2008 and need to reformat it back to it's factory settings. I've been reading the help but I don't seem to have a re-install drive for the USB port. Is this something post 2008 or can I get one from somewhere?

My iPad is on the same network as the Airport Extreme. The HP printer is on the list of Airprint printers but I'm not using it as a wireless printer, per se, as it's hooked up to the USB port on the Airport Extreme.
I installed the HP ePrint app on my iPad. Unfortunately, the app could not find the printer either.
As mentioned earlier, I'm able to print wirelessly to the HP printer via my MacBook Pro.ApplePearApple wrote:

Not necessarily. AirPrint uses a protocol separate from the communication protocol used for the Extreme's USB port. The HP printer may disable AirPrint when its USB port connected to a valid device, which is my reason for recommending you use it wirelessly.
From AirPrint Basics:
AirPrint printers connected using Bluetooth or shared through a USB port of a Mac, PC, AirPort Base Station, or Time Capsule are not supported.
AirPrint printers connected by Ethernet are supported in OS X.

HP's Mac support has always been miserable though. I have been much happier since I abandoned HP and started buying Brother printers. They just work. -
I have had my Airport Extreme for almost a year now. I have not been able to get it to work. It has never worked. I have tried everything in the apple manuals, my peripheral device manuals, and online help. My Airport Extreme Base Station has a completely dead USB port. The USB connector does have voltage and ground. Apparently there is no data transfer. I do not know how to test the data pinouts. I don't know if it is a software or driver problem, or if it is a hardware or wiring problem. My computer is a mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro. All of my external devices work well with the MacBook Pro. The USB functionality on the MacBook Pro has always performed without a glitch. It seems the problem with the Airport Extreme must either be a network communication problem or a hardware/hardwire problem. I bought the Airport Extreme to build a home inTRAnet network. I have a seperate 3rd party router for inTERnet. Contrary to what the manuals declare, the initial setup of my Airport Extreme requires inTERnet setup during the process. Even when the choice is made to limit the network access to LAN only, when I reach the end of the setup process, a prompts reads that the Airport Extreme may not function because I have not set it up for inTERnet with the WAN. Well, Dah... during the intial stages of the setup I told the machine to configure an inTRAnet only LAN setup. So... I went ahead and set it up for inTERnet and WAN. Either way, the USB port is not working. Then I set it up for the whole package, WAN, LAN, and everything. Still... no function out of the USB port. Any ideas?
P.S. The Ethernet works and so does the 802.11 tranceiver. The USB port is the only problem, but a major, major one for my needs. There is no peripheral functionality.Okay so I figured it out. I inherited the Configurator already set up so I didn't realize that our former administrator was brilliant and set things up a little differently. To anyone else who finds themselves in this spot try this:
After you plug the iPad in and open Configurator instead of trying to 'Prepare' the device click 'Assign'
There should be groups of Users listed on the left hand side of the screen.
Select the group you want the ipad to be a part of, or make a new group. ***Note a group can be one person so this is a good feature for teachers to have individual app assignements for students.
After you select the user group click the little plus ( + ) button on the bottom of the screen under the second column of info where names and device serial numbers should appear.
Type the name of the person, group, whatever you want to identify that assignment by into the blank that pops up after you hit the plus ( + )
Then select the assignment you just made and tohe 'Check Our' button at the bottom. At this point a box will pop up with a window at the top listing all devices supervised by Configurator. There is a tiny down arrow button that opens a scroll down menu to the right of this box. Click that, then select the device connected by USB as the one to assign.
The name of the assignment you gave it will show on the lock screen now and you can assign apps and profiles to the device like you would any other device in your Configurator inventory.

when i plug my phone into the usb port with the apple charger that came with my phone i get an error msg say charging not supported by this device. But when i use a gigaware (radioshack brand) usb charger, no error msg. Why?
- Try restoring the iPod, first from backup and then try to factory settings/new iPod to rule out a software problem.
- Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Look for abnormalities like bent or corroded contacts, foreign material and broken or cracked plastic.
- Could you have damaged something when you took the iPod apart and replaced the Home button? -

I just got my AirPort Extreme Base, but I can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 wireless printer with it.
The printer is not connected to the AirPort Extreme's USB port. It is placed in another room, and I'd like to use it (the printer) wirelessly (not connected to the USB port os the AirPort Extreme), as I used to. There is no place for the printer close the AirPort Extreme. It worked just fine with my previous wireless router (Linksys WRT54G). I'm very disappointed with the AirPort Extreme Base Station because of that!...
