Can we use Spaces during Keynote presentation?

Every time when I am giving presentations using the Keynote, I think I really need the Spaces function because I sometimes want to show actual applications for demo. But it seems the presentation screen is locked and I can't use the function, so I must get out of the presentation. Obviously it doesn't look neat. Does anyone know how to? Maybe there is some third party utility for that...

There is no way to remove the Finder (or any running app) from the list. However, If you Command-Tab from App 1 to App 2, then when you press Command-Tab a second time App 1 will then be selected in the list. Also, if you quickly press and release Command-Tab, it will bring forward the next selected item, without having to navigate the list. Putting these two facts together, if you set up your presentation so that you Command-Tab to the second app, then Command-Tab to Keynote, you can then toggle back and forth between these two apps with a single quick Command-Tab press, with no risk of invoking the Finder.

Keynote does not have this function.
The only way to do this is to use an annotation application. Google and find the cost and functionality you need, many have trial downloads.

I would appreciate it if someone could advise me as to the optimum resolution, dimensions and dpi for actual photographic slides that I am scanning for use in a Keynote Presentation, that will be projected in a large auditorium. I realize that most projectors in auditoriums that I will be using have 1024 x 1200 pixels, and possibly 1600 x 1200. There is no reference to this issue in the Keynote Tutorial supplied by Apple, and I have never found a definitive answer to this issue online (although there may be one).
Here’s my question: When scanning my photographic slides, what setting, from 72 dpi to 300 dpi, would result in the best image quality and use up the most efficient amount of space?
Here’s what two different photo slide scanning service suppliers have told me:
Supplier No. 1 tells me that they can scan slides to a size of 1544 x 1024 pixels, at 72 dpi, which will be 763 KB, and they refer to this as low resolution (a JPEG). However, I noticed when I looked at these scanned slides, the size of the slides varied, with a maximum of 1.8 MB. This supplier says that the dpi doesn’t matter when it comes to the quality of the final digital image, that it is the dimensions that matter.  They say that if they scanned a slide to a higher resolution (2048 x 3072), they would still scan it at 72 dpi.
Supplier No. 2: They tell me that in order to have a high quality image made from a photographic slide (starting with a 35 mm slide, in all cases), I need to have a “1280 pixel dimension slide, a JPEG, at 300 dpi, that is 8 MB per image.” However, this supplier also offers, on its list of services, a “Standard Resolution JPEG (4MB file/image – 3088 x 2048), as well as a “High Resolution JPEG (8 MB file/image – 3088x2048).
I will be presenting my Keynotes with my MacBook Pro, and will not have a chance to try out the presentations in advance, since the lecture location is far from my home, so that is not an option.
I do not want to use up more memory than necessary on my laptop.  I also want to have the best quality image.
One more question: When scanning images myself, on my own scanner, for my Keynote presentations, would I be better off scanning them as JPEGs or TIFFs? I have been told that a TIFF is better because it is less compressed.
Any enlightenment on this subject would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

When it comes to Keynote, I try and start with a presentation that's 1680 x 1050 preset or something in that range.  Most projectors that you'll get at a conference won't project much higher than that and if they run at a lower resolution, it's better to have the device downsize your Keynote.  Anything is better than having the projector try and upsize your presentation... you work hard to make it look good, and it's mangled by some tired Epson projector.
As far as slides go, scan them in at 150 dpi or better, and make them at least the dimensions of your presentation.  Keynote is really only wanting 72dpi, but I do them at 150, just in case I need to print out the presentation as a handout later, and having the pix at 150 dpi gives me a little help with their quality on a printer.
You'd probably have to drop in the 150 versions again if you output the Keynote to .pdf or Word or something, but at least you have the option.
And Gary's right (above) go ahead and scan them as TIFFs.  Sooner or later you'll want to do something else with these slides (like make something for an iPad or the like) and having them as TIFFs keeps your presentation looking good.
Finally, and this is a big one, get to the location for your presentation ahead of time if you can, and plug the laptop in and see what you get.  There's always connection problems. Don't let the AV bonehead tell you everything will work just fine ('... I don't have any adapters for a Mac...') .  See it for yourself... you're the one that's standing up there.  Unless it's your boss, then you better be really sure it works.

  • Possible to annotate/markup *during* keynote presentation?

    All,
One feature that would be extremely useful would be the ability to draw lines on a slide during a presentation - and the ability to save that markup (indeed, it is a deal breaker for moving to keynote). Sketches are very important for conveying geology ideas - and I prefer to build up the sketches during the presentation using a tablet (wacom).
    Sincerely,

    Welcome to the forums!
Keynote does not have a native ability to draw directly on presented slides. There are various applications that will allow screen drawing (see this review and this application, for example), but you would have to arrange to save the drawings separately and then add them to the presentation later.
If you know what you want to draw, however, you might be able to do this ahead of time with builds.

  • Swipe back during keynote presentation

    Hi everyone,
I understand that in Mac OS, when I am presenting a keynote presentation, hitting the "[" button (during a slide with several builds) on the keyboard moves the presentation to the previous "build" while hitting the left arrow button moves the presentation to the beginning to the current slide.
When making the same presentation in my iPad, swiping back causes the presentation to move to the beginning to the current slide.
May I know what action is required to move the presentation to the previous "build" (equivalent to hitting the "[" button on the keyboard)?
    Thanks!

I don't believe that Keynote records the mouse movements when recording a presentation -- a recorded presentation is not an actual screen capture. If you need this kind of capability, you may want to look at using a third-party screen capture application like ScreenFlow ($99, but highly recommended, as it allows a lot of post-recording editing options), iShowU ($30), Snapz Pro X ($69).

  • Want to enable screensaver during keynote presentation

    Hi there,
As a feature, Keynote stops the screensaver from activating during a presentation. I actually want to override this feature.
I have a boardroom setup with a Mac mini connected to a Plasma TV. Sometimes a slide will be left on for upto 4 hours and i'd like to avoid screen burn. I've also tried to activate hotcorners to invoke the screensaver with a mouse, but this doesn't work either.
Any help with this would be great. Not sure if it can be achieved though.

I don't believe that is possible without quitting the slideshow. As an alternative, you can press b to show a black screen or w to show a white screen. Then press any key and you will go right back to where you were in the slideshow.

  • Can I use SetFld during GenPrint for banner page fields?

I have a banner page form that has multiple variable fields on it to display information specific to the batch it's being included with (for out post-composition handling area). I currently set those fields' values by assigning variables of the same name (as the fields) within a DAL script called as my BachBannerBeginScript for that batch. The fields on the Banner page form/section have a rule of NOOPFUNC, so without that assign process happening during the DAL script, they inherently hold no value. This has worked fine so far.
Now I have a new banner page for a different process/batch, and it's purpose will be to be a "summary report" of sorts, detailing on the banner page high-level information about each document within that batch. I take information from the batch file (bch), read in an additional external file and aggregate the data in GVMs (to form an array, basically) during the BatchBannerBeginScript. The problem I now have is that I have a variable-sized array (based on the document-count within my batch file), yet my understanding is that I can't use functions available to me in GenData, so I have to basically pre-define as many instances of the section (if I do a report line per section) or field (if I do one section with all instances of the field on it) as I think are possible (max-case scenario, basically).
However, after I have my Section/Fields defined, I still need to use DAL scripting to populate those fields. I tried to use SetFld to populate them, but the values don't show up in my output, leading me to believe that function/rule doesn't work in GenPrint. Is there a better way to set all those fields than to explicitly assign each instance of a field? I'd rather have a short While loop that takes a GVM's instance and assigns it to a variable field name than have hundreds of assign statements where I explicitly assign each possible field.
    Thanks,
    Gregg

Aha. So you have an existing script that is executing somewhere to assign some other field during print. Depending upon what and when this script runs, you may be trying to set your banner fields too late. You see, as a default the banner page is temporary. Generally it is created, printed, then destroyed all before the first real page of your transaction prints. If you are not using the TransBannerBeginScript INI option as mentioned earlier, you might try to use that method to run your script which should be while the banner page is still alive.
There is another way that you could try to run your script on the given page using what is called a "print time" or "macro" field. This would involve creating one more field on your banner section and name it like this:
    ~DALRUN MyScript.DAL
Yes, you can name your script something other than MyScript.DAL.  The key is the ~DALRUN at the start, which will be interpreted at print time to mean that you want to run the DAL script and return a value. Now, of course you don't need a real value for this field, but there's nothing to stop the script from assigning data into the other fields at that time.
You do have to make sure that this field is the first in sequence on the section. Otherwise, some of your fields may print before it gets to the point to evaluate this "print time" request.
To make sure this is the first field in sequence will differ depending upon whether you are using DMStudio or the older Image Editor. Since you mentioned 11.5,  you could use either. In DMStudio, simply click on the "Objects" tab when the section is open and then click on the field to highlight it in the tree. Then use the button bar just above there to move the field to the top of the list.

  • Can you automate an iPad keynote presentation like a slide show?

I have a very basic keynote presentation that I've created on my iPad 2.  No fancy transitions, etc.  Essentially slides with pictures and information.  I need to have it run like a slide show and repeat itself over and over for a static display.  Can someone help me accomplish this?

As far as I know not only they don't "understand" the package's structure but they are unable to open the file because only Keynote is able to do this task.
I wish to add that even some mail program running under Mac OS X may be unable to deal with packages.

  • Can I convert a 4x3 Keynote presentation into 16x9

I've got a finished 4x3 Keynote presentation and a venue wants 16x9. The theme it is built in -- Formal -- doesn't support 1280 x 720 (or 16x9). Without rebuilding the whole presentation in another theme that supports 16X9, is there an easier way to convert it, keeping text and still images, but maybe making some adjustments on spacing?
I've tried several of 1280 x 720 themes and they are not only distorted, but omit many of the images in the presentation.
    Any help appreciated.

Formal theme doesnt support 16:9 when you are at Theme Chooser. Though, there is something you may try.
    Open your presentation
    Inspector
    Document (The first tab)
    Select slide size 1280x720
The formal theme will be transformed to 16:9. You may need to do some adjustments as you said, but it should work.
