Cannot Change Permissions

Here's the scenario:
Server: 10.5.8
Desktops: 10.5.8
User Homedirs: AFP
The user's can connect and work on their documents within their network homedirs without a problem. Sometimes an excel spreadsheet will come up with an error that the file is read-only. To resolve this, they just rename the file. But what I have noticed is that all the users cannot change the permissions on their files. If you do a command+I on the file you see the permissions, but there is no lock icon to unlock the permissions portion. If you change the permissions, whether user, group, or everyone, you receive an error that says: "A system error has occurred: error code -50" However, if I go to the command line and type in for example: sudo chmod -vf 0775 filename. The permissions change. What's going on?
Is this a POSIX issue... where the drive is running on POSIX compliance and not ACLs? I noticed in Server Admin that the File Sharing setup for the drive did not have an ACL list. Everything was being done by POSIX permissions.
Thanks.

I have a problem with my data folder for Eudora. There is a category that I do not know or recognise.
The usual Command-I opens folder info; the at the bottom permissions reads as follows:
Name Privilege
1 michaelg (me) Read & Write
2 (unknown) Custom
3 everyone No Access
Settings for 1 & 3 are fine; however, I am unable to delete the 2nd entry which is an alien implant. Could some kind individual help me to do this in Terminal, if possible?
Kind regards - michaelwilliamg

  • AMDS will not install as part of 10.7 upgrade. have reinstalled many times..even manually.  cannot change permissions in windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository\usb.inf_amd64_neutral_153b489118ee3 7b8

I have reinstalled Itunes 10.7 many times...each time it comes back and says that it cannot recognize my iphone because AMDS is not installed...yet when I try to install it fails...and asks me to reinstall Itunes again.  It seems as though it may be realated to the usb.inf file in usb.inf_amd64_neutral_153b489118ee37b8.
I have seen where others fix the issue by changing permissions on the folder and replacing the file...the file says it is 6kb...but when I open the file...there is nothing there.  I cannot even change the permission on the folder...even as an administrator.  Please help!!!

  • Cannot change permissions to external hard drives

My usb partitions are all set to "custom" permissions and they cannot be changed no matter what I have tried. I tried creating new Administrator accounts but I cannot assign any new accounts or settings to the partitions. They merely appear on the desktop with a lock icon on them.
What caused this issue is I wanted to remove the annoying "unknown user" under permissions for an external partition. It would not allow me to do that so I tried to apply disk permissions to "all enclosed items". This did not help either so I tried repairing disk permissions and it appeared to start to fix a trillion disk permission errors that would take 2 hours estimated to do so. It suggested canceling and reinstalling the OS after backing up your files.
So I took that suggestion, cancelled the repairing process, but was not able to back up my files because of this change to the partitions that all now appear with a lock.
I have a feeling it will require some Terminal commands to reapply new permissions to the partitions, which I would need help doing.
    Thanks for any assistance.

you should never use "apply to enclosed items" on a system drive or on system created folders. that includes the Applications folder, your home directory, your desktop folder etc. Use it only on folders you create yourself. to unlock the external drives you need to run the following terminal commands (copy and paste please)
    sudo chflags nouchg /Volumes/"drive name"
    sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/"drive name"
Put the name of the affected drive in the above. KEEP the quotes. You'll be prompted to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal.

  • Team Foundation Administrators Cannot Change Permissions

    Using TFS 2012 Update 2
I am in the Team Foundation Administrators group. I am trying clean this group up and remove some users. The Console lets me do that but when I click OK I get an error popup stating my windows account " Needs the following permissions: Edit collection
    level information"
First off I thought TFAdmin could do anything, anywhere.  Apparently not, so I have looked at the Project Collections security setup and TFAdmin is a member of Project Collection Admins and that group has the permission. I thought permissions got inherited?
And to follow with a general question, if the TFAdmins group can do anything, why does it need to be in any other group?
    Thanks.....

    Hi Remarkm,
    Thanks for your post.
Yes, there’s the Edit collection-level information permission in
Project Collection Administrators group, but this administrator group cannot be modified and this
Edit collection-level information permission set to allow in this group by default.
Except the Edit collection-level information permission in collection level groups, this permission also can be configured in TFS Server level groups, in your TFS Admin Console>>Application Tier>>Administer Security, select the
Team Foundation Administrators group, ensure the Edit collection-level information permission not be denied in this group.
If this Edit collection-level information permission set to Allow in your
Team Foundation Administrators group, but you still receive that “Needs Edit collection level information” error, please execute the command
tfssecurity /imx “username” /collection:url to check your account belong to which groups, then check
Edit collection-level information permission in that groups, ensure this permission not be denied in that groups.
Why the Team Foundation Administrators group be added in
Project Collection Administrators group by default? Because not all TFS permissions be defined in TFS Server group, you will find there’s Administer Warehouse, User full Web Access features and other collection level permissions be defined in TFS Server
group’s Security. But other team project related permissions all defined in collection level groups, and you will find that permissions(workspace, team project, build etc) in your collection admin page. So the
Team Foundation Administrators group be added in Project Collection Administrators group by default, and the permissions settings in this in
Project Collection Administrators group cannot be modified, then all the users in
Team Foundation Administrators group will have the permissions which configured in both
     Team Foundation Administrators group and
    Project Collection Administrators group.

  • Cannot change permissions on an external drive

I have an external drive connected to a MBPro. I use itfr Time Machne backups. I tried to ad my user name though the Get nfo so that I can read & write to the drive. However whn I unlock, and try to add my name, it is not added. What should I do.

You must use the TM application in the Applications folder to remove items from a backup. Never do it manually or you will severely mess up your backup.
When the disk is full then you should either erase the drive and start a new backup sequence or replace the drive with a larger backup drive.
A TM backup drive needs to be at least twice the capacity of the drive it backs up. However, due to the way TM works a backup drive will eventually fill up.

Need Adobe help to solve this. My own searches in Forums and Google all have failed.

It is not an Adobe problem. You have a OS permissions problem. You can try to correct this by using Disk Utility to Repair Permissions. It is in the First Aid area of Disk Utility.

  • Big Permissions Problem: "You Cannot Change The Contents Of This Folder"

I installed Tiger some time ago (and need to upgrade now from 10.4.6 to 10.4.9).
I haven't used it much since some of my software will only run under Panther.
In any case, I'm using it now and have been having big permissions/user accounts problems.
I have two users on the computer "robert" and "ra", both with admin privileges (I set up two because I was trying to get around these problems -- I'd be very happy with just one).
I have 10.4.6 installed on an external HD and boot from that into Tiger (I have Tiger on another external HD as a backup, and my main HD in the iMac has 10.3.9 -- that's what I boot from when I need to run older programs).
In any case, both "robert" and "ra" have ADMIN privileges. But I get weird ownership problems. For instance, if I am logged in as "ra" and try to play a Realplayer file streaming from the web (in Firefox 1.x), I get the error
/Users/robert/Desktop/307e6wz7 could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder.
I check the ownership of the "Desktop" folder -- read/write for "ra".
If I right-click I can save the Realplayer file to the desktop.
    Same with other links.
I've also noticed other ownership problems (blocked folders at finder level) but can't duplicate tonight. Is this an obscure error, or is there something amiss in ownership recognition? Is there some way I can sort all out? Login in as "root" and set all right?
    Thanks
    G4 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yes they do. When you installed them you dragged these particular apps to the Applications folder. Doing so automatically attributes the program with the ownership attributes of the account owner who installed them - 'robert.'
Proper application installers install apps under the system/admin ownership. You can try to fix these apps by changing their permissions:
Select the app and CTRL-click to open the contextual menu. Choose Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Select the Contents folder and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Ownership and Permissions section click on the tiny arrow icon to expose the panel. Click on the little lock icon to authenticate. Change permissions as follows:
Owner = system with Read/Write privileges
Group = admin with Read/Write privileges
    Other with Read-Only privileges
Click on the Apply To Enclosed Items button. Close the lock by clicking again on the lock icon.

This can be done easily with ethernet.
    Please follow the instructions strictly.
To make it easier I want you to do this overnight so you can turn off all your current connection to the internet.
Just go to the airport fan in to the top right and turn airport off.
Get ethernet cable and connect the laptop to the TC lan port.. ie <-> ones.
Press and hold the reset on the TC for about 10sec. until the front led flashes rapidly.
Open the airport utility.. go to manual setup and change the wireless to off. (so other people around you cannot join your network of one).
Ignore all the errors.. they won't stop the backup working.
Go to the TM and reselect the backup target disk as the TC.
It should start after 2min and run through to completion.
That is it.. for a backup of many GB it might take a few hours.. so make sure the laptop has power plugged in and the sleep is off.. (on early ones I think this is needed but I am a late arrival to the scene).. sleep doesn't affect later OS.

  • External Hard Drives Changing Permissions to Read Only

Three of my USB external hard drives have suddenly changed to read only. One of the times I was trying to transfer/back-up the files from one drive that had changed to read only to another external. Suddenly the second drive changed permissions. Then after plugging a third external, that drive changed permissions. They all were working perfectly fine with my computer and I have only been using them on MACS. Any explanations? Could there be something wrong with my USB ports? Is it possible to have a virus of some sort?
    Thank you!

  • How can I change permissions on my iPhone photos?

Whenever I download, or email, photos from my iPhone to my PC, the photos come in rotated. Whenever I try to edit photos taken with my iPhone, even something as simple as rotate or resize, I get errors telling me "You cannot rotate this image. The file may be in use or open in another program [it isn't] or the file or folder may be read-only." The folder is NOT Read Only but the all Microsoft permissions are greyed out and cannot be changed.
No matter what avenue I follow to change permissions, the files remained locked up tighter than Fort Knox and I can't do anything except get seriously frustrated.
What in blazes can I do to keep ownership of my own photos? They are completely useless in this form.
I'm running an iPhone 4S with OS 5.1, my laptop is running Win 7 Home Edition Service Pack 1.

Are you talking about your apple id or actually email address?
apple id - settings - app/itunes store - view id - log out and log in with new id.
    email addres - settings - mail/contact/calendar - add account.

  • File Vault changes permissions?

I've written a C++ application that will be used by both Windows and OSX clients. The app is simple and console based and is distributed as a simple binary file, compiled separately for Windows and as a Universal OSX application. I edit with AquaEmacs and compile from within using a simple makefile. I don't think any of this is relevant, but it might so I share it.
I've sent the file to one of my OSX testers who happens to be using an Intel Mac (MacBook) running OSX 10.4.10. The file is named "Sartain" and I send it as a file attachment to an email, not it .dmg format. Just for insurance, I use chmod to set file permissions to universal r,w,x (sudo chmod 777 Sartain). With this background, here is the problem I'm trying to sort out.
My tester seems to receive this file as "Sartain." (note the period). Moreover, when he tries to execute the file (./Sartain) from his home directory, he gets "permission denied". I had him check permissions and the received file has stripped off all the write and execute permissions, leaving him only with universal "read" permission. The only way he can run the program is to use chmod to reset permissions.
He is not a Mac sophisticate and so I don't really know what to have him check. He reports that he DOES NOT use virus protection on the machine but he has FILE VAULT turned on. This is the only thing I can think of that would produce this problem. I've scanned the net widely but cannot find conclusive evidence that FILE VAULT changes permissions on received files, but I'm stumped where else to look. He uses a Novell email client and I suppose that his mail server could be stripping off the permissions, but I'd like to rule out FILE VAULT before having to phone his sysadmins to find out what the default setting is on their mail server.
Any thoughts here would be welcome. Thanks for your help.

  • Cannot Change Desktop Picture Anymore

    Hi -
Problem is described in the Header. And goes for ALL accounts incl. ROOT Account.
Scenario: I open Sys Pref. Go to Desktop/ScreenSaver - it opens fine and I can click the images. They will even show in the little preview window in the top. The only thing NOT changing is the Actual Desktop. It remains Solid Blue.
Tried deleting Finder, desktop, .globalpref( in both pref folders) - Preferences
    Any Ideas ?

    HELP!
    Have you done your homework?
Run DU, check/repair HD and permissions.
If that does not work, move following .plists to desktop; let system create new plists
    try this one first:
    com.apple.desktop.plist
reboot and see if this fixes it.
if not then move this one to desktop and repeat
    com.apple.desktopscreensaver.rsspictures.plist
    report back here with results.

    Hello,
I was provided a file from a customer that is RGB. I need to change it to cmyk for printing. HOwever I cannot change the color mode. All my options in the Mode section under Image are greyed out. I have never seen this happen before.. Here is a screen shot of the Mode.
The image has been flattened. I am using PS cs6 on a mac. I have never seen this happen before. Does any one have any ideas?

Strange. Could the file permissions be set to lock you out?
In the Finder, do a Get Info in the file and look at the permissions. If at the bottom, your name says "read only," then you need to change the permissions to allow you to read AND write.
To change permissions, use BatChmod, but be careful to change the permissions on that file ONLY.
    It's FREE at:
    http://www.lagentesoft.com/batchmod/index.html
... And if that doesn't solve the problem, can you share the file?
