Cannot chown a mounted directory as root

I am having an issue with chown as root user on a ZFS mounted partition in the client machine. I have mounted /u01 from a ZFS storage using
mount -t nfs vers=3 10.106.216.73:/export/cleartrialtest /u01
then on the client, I am trying to
[root@cleartrialdbnimbula /]# chown oracle:oinstall /u01/app
chown: changing ownership of `/u01/app': Operation not permitted
I tried with no_root_squash option as well in /etc/exports, still the same thing. I can touch a file in /u01/app.

You mentioned about /etc/exports and setting no_root_squash. These settings are only used for NFS server not client.
I feel you are exporting the share from ZFSSA with default permission with access to user Anonymous user "nobody"
You can try setting NFS exceptions going to Status > Shares >Protocols and add the HOST ( FQDN) to the list.
Please refer to Document NFS exceptions for root squash to nobody user [ID *1380158.1*]
If you do not want keep root permissions for the given share permanently, then you can remove the host from exception list.
In case you have more queries you can always open a Service Request with Oracle Support we will be glad to help you.

  • Cannot import from NFS directory: tree not expandable

I am using Lightroom 4.3 on Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1).
I am unable to import files from an NFS-mounted directory because the folders lack rocker nodes, so I can't navigate through the tree to my existing Photos directory.  It isn't practical or desirable to import the entire NFS filesystem.
I originally had the filesystem mounted with these options:
freenas:/mnt/vol_home/nfs_home on /Volumes/home (nfs, nodev, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
And while I can see the root of the filesystem in the left side of the import window, and while the directories have little folder icons next to them, the little triangular rockers next to them are greyed out.  If I picked a directory, and checked "include subfolders", then Lightroom would recurse through the tree and show me all of the pictures.  But I don't want to import my entire filesystem.  I need to navigate down the tree to my photo directory, but the rockers are "greyed out".  It's difficult to see them greyed out when the background is grey too, but they are there, faint as they are.
So, I thought maybe the "nobrowse" option had something to do with the inability to navigate.  I used "NFS Utility" to remove the "nobrowse"option, and remounted the filesystem.  It is now mounted with these options:
freenas:/mnt/vol_home/nfs_home on /Volumes/home (nfs, nodev, nosuid, noatime)
And while I can see the root of the filesystem in the left side of the import window, and while the directories have little folder icons next to them, [most of] the rockers next to them are still greyed out.  Here is a screenshot of the import window, alongside a Finder window, which of course lets me open the rockers and navigate just fine.  The fact that Finder works implies to me that it isn't a permissions problem.  Of course I can also "cd" using the terminal commandline.  The navigation problem appears to be limited to the Lightroom application.
Hopefully you can see from this screenshot, that only the "rbrown" folder has a working rocker.  The other rockers are greyed out (which is really difficult to see).  I need to navigate below "rbrown", but cannot.   Finder can open the "family" rocker, and can open the subfolders under "rbrown" just fine.
Why does lightroom refuse to let me open these folders?
    Thanks in advance.

I have discovered a way to get Lightroom to navigate my NFS directory!  Using the help I learned here:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lightroom_4_3_import_from_and_to_nfs _mounted_filesystem_does_not_work
I discovered that not only did I need to use a nonstandard mount point (I ultimately chose "/nas"), but that I also needed to mount with the "rdirplus" option (aka "Use ReaddirPlus NFSv3 feature").  I was using the German 3rd party package "NFS Manager" to help me mount and unmount quickly, while enabling and disabling options left and right to try to figure this problem out.  It also allows me to specify it as an "automount".  Prior to Mac OS X 10.8 (mountain lion), there was a GUI in Disk Utility to allow me to specify NFS mounts, but as of mountain lion, the button is gone, for reasons unclear.
Anyway, I got lightroom to navigate my NFS server by mounting on /nas, and by specifying the 'rdirplus' option in the mount command.

  • My Airport Extreme and Time Capsule both cannot do not mount my Seagate USB external hard.

My Airport Extreme and Time Capsule both cannot do not mount my Seagate USB external hard.
    I am running OS 10.7.5
Both the TC and AE are updated to 7.6.1
The Seagate drive in formatted: Journaled HFS+
I tried everything on Apple's Article: HT1331 and the basic reboots and restarts.
    "Next"

It sounds like you may be confusing "mount" with "recognize".
Connect the drive to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon, then click Edit
    Click the Disks tab
Does the AirPort Extreme "recognize" your hard drive?  If yes, it will be displayed in the window.
See example below of a WD 500 GB drive connected to the AirPort Extreme.
If your drive is formatted HFS+ and it does not appear here, then you will almost certainly need to use a powered USB hub with the hard drive.....even if the hard drive has its own power supply.  The USB port on the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule is under powered.
Post back when the drive is "recognized" and we will next "mount" the drive.....although you likely already know how to do this.

  • DiskWarrior cannot replace the original directory due to Mac OS failure?

    I have a Powermac Dual G5 running 10.4.8. I have a Lacie Firewire 800 RAID attached.
Lacie firmware is up to date and Disk Utility reports no problems with the RAID, either permissions or Repair/Verify disk.
I have run the latest DiskWarrior 3.0.3 on the RAID (both from the boot volume and booted from the 303 rev39 CD) and it detects a formidable list of potential repairs to be done, creation dates on link files etc.
It offers the next step which is to replace the existing directory with the pristine one it has just prepared.
    Every time I press 'Replace' it backs out, reporting;
"The new directory cannot replace the original directory due to a MacOS services failure"
(If I run DW when booted from the RAID, it replaces the normal boot drives directory OK btw)
I do understand there used to be a bug in Mac OS Panther and an older DiskWarrior reporting similar to this but why now with 3.0.3?
    What does it mean?
Google was no help. Maybe should have come here first
    PowerMac G5 2.5 - PB 12" 1.5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   SE30, IIsi

If lots of errors are reported, it is probably a good idea not to replace the directory. Wiring anything to the drives could make things worse. With Disk Warrior run from your boot hard drive, have it create the new directory, but don't try to write it to the disks. You can then use the new directory to copy files from the bad disks to another disk, or DVDs. It should give you a more accurate backup than the old directory, with its errors. Others have reported LaCie RAID systems failing, so get the data while you can. You could then reformat the LaCie with zeroing and see if it generates errors again, maybe running Disk Warrior daily. If your are lucky, the LaCie may be OK then, but I wouldn't trust it.

  • Cannot Associate 1532 Bridges in Non-Root role

    Hello,
Can someone please tell me what I am missing and why I cannot bring up 2 bridges in "Root" and "Non-Root" roles?
I have similarly configured bridges in a Root / Non-Root role several times before with older AP's and never had any issues... although it was always just 1 SSID, 1 Vlan, and no subinterfaces...
The only way I was able to get these 2 bridges to associate was to put the Non-Root bridge into a Workgroup Bridge role and then *BANG* everything worked perfectly.  I tried getting rid of the authentication and tried using the Parent command but neither helped.  Prior to entering Station Role Workgroup Bridge, the only message I would receive was showing on the Non-Root side and all it said was:
*Mar  1 07:27:13.867 GMT: %DOT11-4-CANT_ASSOC: Interface Dot11Radio0, cannot associate: No Response
    *Mar  1 07:27:28.891 GMT: %DOT11-4-CANT_ASSOC: Interface Dot11Radio0, cannot associate: Rcvd response from 544a.0005.8030 channel 3 2815
What am I missing or what have I incorrectly configured on my Non-Root config?
Bridges are both 1532i with the Autonomous Image 15.2(4)JB5
Attached are the configs prior to changing the Non-Root AP to a station role of Workgroup Bridge.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
This should work with multiple sub-interfaces.
    Few more suggestions
    1. Remove this from your BRIDGE SSID & check
    mobility network-id 1
This is only require when you configure L3 roaming & WDS in place.
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless/aironet-1200-series/8103-ap-faq.html
    2. Try to set WPA version 2 & only AES encryption.
Also try to Associate your Bridges using Open Auth first (as shown in my blog post initial section) & then try to add security.

  • Cannot Use Already Versioned Directory

I've moved from the EA version to the release version of Data Modeler. Consequently, I get a "your design is in the old format" message when I save, then further instructs me to "save as.." instead. When I do so, trying to overwrite the existing dmd file, I get "Cannot Use Already Version Directory. Please select a new directory." This is counter intuitive to me - I use source control so that I can track and compare changes to the project, including updates like this. What procedure should I use to update the file if I can't overwrite? Write it to a temp directory and then copy in the contents? For the record, I don't use the built in source integration and instead use the standard subversion client outside of DM. Can I somehow disable DM's awareness of the source control?

Can I somehow disable DM's awareness of the source control? That's in "Preferences>Extensions" - disable versioning support there. Still I won't recommend to save it over existing design - existing directories will be deleted including svn directories. It's safer to save the content in another directory and copy it back to versioned directory; also files that have older date should be removed from versioned folders.

When I try to download a page a message appears after the download time saying in part that "cannot find zip file directory". This message appears on all downloads I attemp.

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
If you have upgraded from version 8 (or earlier) to iTunes 9 (or later) at some point, then your media folder (everything inside the red outline) may still be called iTunes Music instead of iTunes Media. The extra Music folder inside the media folder is used if you have allowed iTunes to Upgrade to iTunes Media Organization (iTunes 9) or used File > Library > Organize Library > Reorganize files in the folder "<Media Folder>" (iTunes 10). Depending on your choices for Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library plus a little bug in which one build changed the name of the file storing the choice of layout it is quite easy for some of your files to be organized according to one layout and some the other.
It is possible that in the upgrade to Lion iTunes has been installed with the current default options while your library is based on an older structure. Use Get Info. on a missing track, click cancel when asked to locate it and look at the path given on the summary tab. Now look for the actual file with Finder. Post both paths back here and we can try to make sense of the problem.

What i missed? what happen with zfs dev directory?
    thank you

    Hi
    I finally found the problem.
    ZFS naming restrictions:
names must begin with a letter

  • Chown for mounting pocket drive

I've mounted a Western Digital "My Wallet" in my home directory. I had to chown to get access to the folders but still can't get access to the files. I've tried chown on the files as will as chmod 0755. It tells me Permission denied and Operation not supported.
I was in root when trying this. Thought I should mention that.
    How can I fix this?
This is what permissions look like:
[root@ihermit Ajax For Dummies]# ls -la
    total 8552
    drwx------ 1 ihermit root 0 Aug 12 2012 .
    drwx------ 1 ihermit root 0 Aug 12 2012 ..
    -rw------- 1 root root 8748114 Aug 12 2012 Ajax For Dummies.pdf
    -rw------- 1 root root 6656 Aug 12 2012 Thumbs.db
    Thanks
    JohnP

What filesystem is this on?  If it is NTFS (which I suspect), then it is not writable because Arch Linux does not automatically come with ntfs-3g like other "user friendly" distributions.

  • Users cannot connect to Open Directory Leopard server

Just testing Leopard server and running into all sorts of problems...
Clean install of Leopard Server running DNS, AFP and Open Directory.
Set up DNS first and checked both forward and reverse look-up was correct.
Promoted to Open Directory master from Standalone.
Created two test user accounts (without Home directories) and gave them access to a specific sharepoint.
Setup LDAP on the client machine (Leopard client) and could see the user accounts in the Directory app.
Try to log in.....'username or password incorrect'.
Check the OD logs and cannot find any reference to the attempted log-in.
I understand that it appears that user accounts require a Home Directory in Leopard, regardless of whether you actually want one (I don't). I tried creating a home directory using Workgroup Manager but as noted in other threads, the 'create home directory' button doesn't work.
I then created a home directory via the command line for one of the user accounts but am still unable to log-in.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

This may be a stupid question but have you run sudo chown on the user's home directory after creating it?
I had the same problem and my solution is posted here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1290158&tstart=0
Let me know if that works. If not, we'll work on it together.
