Cannot Diagnose Battery Problem - Pavillion DM3 - repost after no response

I have some kind of problem between my Pavillion DM3 and its battery, but cannot figure out where it lies. The notebook will not operate without AC power. When I plug it into AC, it boots and is usable. The charging light on the right front of the notebook flashes regularly. When I mouse over the power icon on the toolbar, it indicates that the battery is charging but that it is at 0% of capacity. It remains in this state as long as AC is available and the computer is turned on. The light continues to flash when the notebook is powered off. When I start up the HP diagnostic software on the machine and try to check the battery health, it runs for a while and then tells me that the battery cannot be detected. It then advises me to remove and reseat the battery. Needless to say, nothing changes once I do this. I have tried repeatedly. For what it's worth (are you listening HP?) , the error message does not suggest powering down the machine prior to removing and reseating the battery. I was careful to do so but wonder what the consequences would be if someone removed the battery without first turning off the machine.
I would consider buying a new battery, but I have no way to assure myself that the problem is in the battery and not in the interfacing circuitry on the PC. With no idea what it will cost to resolve this problem, I am at a loss as to whether repair is an option, or whether I'm better off putting the cost of repair towards a replacement notebook.Can anyone help me with this.

After a long wait, someone replied to my earlier post suggesting that my problem was with the battery itself. I went to eBay and found an inexpensive (~$35) battery which now appears to be working fine. By the time I removed the old battery, it was literally swollen. I thoiught it might be ready to break open. All seems well, but I'm glad I didn't pay HP the $49 to "diagnose" the problem and/or whatever their full freight would have been for a replacement battery.
If anyone from HP is reading this, I have two problems with HP. First is the poor quality of their products, and second is their poor support for out-of-warranty products. I went months with no response to two posts on t he user forums. Instead of trying to scare people into buying genuine HP ink, HP should improve the quality of its product and offer better support.

    I have the same issue after iOS 4.2.1 update. I am using iPhone 3GS officially unlocked by Apple. I tried using different SIM cards and both carriers show same problem when using phone in 3G mode. Phone falls back to EDGE mode showing 'E' from '3G' at start. I have reset the phone and rebooted several times and moved to different cell areas in the city just to verify the problem.
    I had no such issues earlier. I also have Nokia E71 which shows full signal and has no such issues.
    I have posted the bug on apple iphone feedback page. I hope they Apple will fix the problem and test the release properly on all models before releasing to public.

  • Cannot charge battery on Pavillion dv9700

    Just got a new battery for my dv9700 (owned for 1.5 years) after my old one got to the point where it couldn't hold a 15 minute charge.
    When I insert the battery, the battery monitor says the battery is 0% available and charging for approximately 5 seconds. After that, it says the battery is "0% available (plugged in, not charging)", while the battery indicator light on the computer stays flashing. HP Battery Check says that "The Primary Battery Was Not Detected."
    Battery does not appear to charge at all while in the computer, with the PC turned off.
    I've recalibrated my battery, flashed the BIOS and reinstalled the ACPI control with no luck... Battery was purchased new off of amazon.com.
    Any suggestions?

    My laptop started this same problem after I installed a new genuine copy of Windows 7. I have tried several things to no avail. I  recently read a post that recommended starting the computer in Safe mode and allowing the battery to fully discharge, then plug it in. I do so and that corrected the message saying "consider replacing the battery". However, it now says "plugged in , not charging". I have found the battery does charge. However, when it is at 100% it only lasts 15 minutes. I suspect the several months before correcting the problem, the battery became severely damaged and will not hold a charge more than 15 minutes. 
    I am considering purchasing a new battery, however, I want to make sure the charging issue is fixed first. Any thoughts?

    What have you tried so far in terms of troubleshooting this issue?  Are you plugging the iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port on the back of your PC? Have you tried a different USB cable?
    What happens if you try to reset the device with it still connected to the PC?

    Have you carefully worked through each and every single suggestion in this Apple support document?

    is to turn off wifi when you do not need it. When I leave the house I turn off wifi, because the majority of the times when my iPhone has got very hot and crashed is when I am away from home. I suspect that if the iPhone is in the vicinity of public wifi (wheather secure or not secure) it will try and connect, even if you have 'automatically join known networks' set to off. This is easy of course if you have an unlimited data contract for your iPhone. I may be wrong, but it is working for me. It makes sense for me because it is another way of reducing the work the processor (and battery) has to do and therefore reduces the chance of overheating.
    Having said that, I never had this problem with my iPhone 4. I now have a 4S.

    I did a soft reset, and I went to the discussion and turned every down or off.  This is definitely a hardware problem.

  • Diagnosing PMU/Battery problems

    I have an iBook G4 (1.33mhz) that is experiencing a number of problems I believe to be related to the PMU. These include:
    - battery does not fully charge and the indicator will flicker back and forth between charging/not charging when about three quarters charged
    - wireless settings and date/time settings are forgotten between restarts
    - backlight will randomly shut off (restart will restore it)
    - on occasion, the iBook will not startup at all - removing power cord and battery then re-installing will allow startup
    My understanding is that the PMU on the iBook G4 is integrated into the battery and there is some small capacitor on the motherboard that will retain settings briefly while the battery is removed/replaced. The PMU has been reset several times (shift-control-option-power).
    I seem to recall replacing the battery once, but not 100% sure. The battery shows a cycle count of 299. I am on my third power adapter.
    How can I diagnose whether this is just a battery problem vs something more serious? I hate to replace the battery and/or power adapter again only to find something more serious/costly.
    Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Seems the problem was a third party power adapter I was using. I bought a new Apple-branded 65W adapter and everything seems back to normal now.
    The strange thing is that the orginal power adapter was also exhibiting these problems - charge indicator on tip going from orange to green to off - network, date and time not saving, etc. That's why I started using the third party adapter (iGo) which still exhibited these symptoms.

    I also forgot to mention that when it did have power, it wouldn't let me shut it off to try and conserve the battery life. Right when it powered down it would power right back up.

    I guess I should have asked for the "definitive" fix. I read several "fixes" but it seems no one knows if Apple has a definitive fix. Kind of like going into an Apple store and getting three different answers from three different reps. At least they are not rude and no, I don't have a problem searching the forum.

  • ThinkPad Edge 13" sudden BATTERY problem

    Hi, i am starting to be desperate, therefore i registered myself here. Let me explain my story.
    My computer is now almost 2 years old and I have less than 14 days till the warranty expires (I am from Europe), but I'd like to avaid this, because i really need my computer now, not after 30 days, which is by law designated time till which it must be returned to me back. I did not have to use my computer outside home for about 3 month, so I was using that during that period as desktop computer, where i set in lenovo power manager, that all energy should be taken from the AC adaptor letting the battery to deplete itself in its own pace. But i have taken my computer to the libraries lately and i have experienced sudden battery problems. Let me describe them in order as it happened.
    1) battery shows that that it has more than lets say 20% of power, but windows power manager warns me that battery capacity is in reality 6% and i need to use my AC adaptor now. after second even lenovo power manager recognize the fact that battery is almost depleted. first i did not pay attention, i thought it was some temporary bug and it will not be repeated again.
    2) unfortunatelly it was, therefore i updated lenovo power manager to current version (6.11), which realized that current battery capacity was not 54Wh (as before update), but 47Wh. Therefore I resetted battery gauge statting that battery capacity is now slightly over 51Wh. For couple of days everything was as it should (probably, because i always connected AC adaptor around 10% of remaining battery).
    3) now my problem appeared again, though battery depleted naturally and slowly to 10%, after that windows power manager popped again showing, that battery is 6% and I need to use my AC adaptor. after connecting to electricity whole W7 froze for a while. I rather restarted system after which I realized, that battery info is wrong again - original capacity of battery since i have this laptop was over 62Wh, now is slightly over 57Wh (this is something new i have not realized this 2 days ago, when i was doing the reset, and I'd bet i happened just now) and current battery capacity rose back to 54Wh (as I said before, after the last reset it was just 51Wh).
    I attemted to do Battery test through Toolbox, but system refuse to run this test (even after resterting system) stating "Cannot run".

    but FRU number of my laptop is 42T4813 and is not in the list of batteries requireing update.
    Sorry for long text, and quality of English (I am not native speaker), any help is welcome. Thank you in advance.
    PS: i always install updates throught System update, my BIOS should be therefore up to date, i also Lenovo Power manager does not offer any update for battery firmware.

    After todays restart original baterry capacity is restored back to 62+Wh, But current capacity is still 54Wh, higher than after last battery reset. I am upgrading to higher version of Power Manager.

    i bought a laptop Hp Pavillion dm3. unfortunatly i have been having this problem since june and have not had time to write to hp regarding this problem or see a consultant due to my university studies. the problem i am having is when i switch on the laptop, after 3 seconds the laptop switches back off, and fails to switch on even after pressing the on n off button. furthermore, with the battery power, it doesnt even startup. i have to use the power supply to switch it back on and after 3 seconds it switches off again. my product name and number is Hp pavilion dm3-1040ei  windows 7 no changes made to the system before.

    You really need to contact HP directly on this and it is likely you will have to send it in for service. It sounds like a major hardware fialure. This is just a user to user forum.
