Cannot downgrade to Mavericks.

Hello all,
As with many, I upgraded to OS X Yosemite on launch day. At first I enjoyed it, however now I wish to return my system to its factor settings with OS X Mavericks. The problem is, going into the Restore Utility accessed by holding down a few keyboard commands upon startup, my machine will now only let me reinstall OS X Yosemite.
This iMac was purchased with OS X Mavericks running on it, and lacks a disc drive. The iMac was purchased late spring 2014 brand new.
Is there anyway I can downgrade? Thanks in advance.
- Gerald B.

To reinstall Mavericks, you need to boot into Internet Recovery (cmd-opt-r), repartition the disk, then reinstall.
If you don't have a backup prior to installing Yosemite, there won't be a way to restore your files except manually from a backup. Some things, like the iPhoto Library and Mail, will have been "upgraded" to the Yosemite versions. You will have to manually import those things from the old Libraries, I think.

  • How do I downgrade to Maverick

Since upgrading to Yosemite, I cannot access the wifi via my connection...all of my other computers, ipads work fine, just the upgraded one isn't working. I posted this in another area, received dozens of "fixes", no luck. Apple was kind enough to call and ran diagnostics, took reports etc for over 3 hours and could not find what the heck is wrong. My time machine amongst other things no longer works.
I decided to bite the bullet and downgrade to Maverick, but even that isn't going well. I tried the Command-R reinstall and it downloaded, but then gave me PAGES of errors...any ideas for another way to do this???

To downgrade to Mavericks requires you have a Mavericks installer because it cannot be downloaded from the App Store. Here's what you can try provided you have a model that supports Internet Recovery: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery. If yours is supported:
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
If it does not support Internet Recovery:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. You may be able to re-download Mavericks from the Purchases page of the App Store.

  • Time Machine "inherit" after emergency downgrade to Mavericks

    (iMac;  3.6GHz Intel Core i5; 16GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory)
I was having many kernel panics after upgrading to Yosemite. After thorough hardware diagnostics (no hardware problems), the Genius Bar guy suggested downgrading to Mavericks 10.9.5, which he did in the store by wiping the hard drive and installing 10.9.5.
From the latest time machine back up drive (WHICH HAD BEEN BACKING UP FROM YOSEMITE), I copied my apps and files across in small groups and so far so good re: kernel panics. This process was not done via time machine interface, simply by dragging off the drive from newest backup.
Now, I would like to resume using that same drive for time machine backups from 10.9.5. And I believe I want to "inherit" that existing drive, so my future Mavericks back ups are ADDED TO but do not REPLACE the current Yosemite back ups.
The scary thing, in setting up time machine preferences is that this drive is showing " oldest backup: none // Latest backup: none "  I'm afraid of going farther because I do not want this drive to be wiped during backup, for fear that kernel panics will return during that process and I could lose important data or ALL of it for that matter.
So, (1) Do I understand inherit correctly ? (2) How can I keep the current backups on this drive and ADD the future Mavericks backups?
    thanks!!!!

Are you connected via wifi? If so, and it is an option, try connecting using a ethernet cable. It sometimes seems to help as it can give a more reliable connection for the 5.3gb download.
If you do manage to download it you may want to make a copy of the installer file - which gets downloaded to the Applications folder - before running it as it self-deletes on successful installation. It may save you another monster download in the future.

  • Downgrading to Mavericks

I just made the mistake of upgrading my Macbook Air from Mavericks to Yosemite. I'm regretting it since I'm not liking any aspect of the new look & feel. I'm desperate to downgrade to Mavericks. Could Apple Tech support please help me ?

Two things, first you are not talking to Apple here, only to other users like yourself. If you want Apple Tech Support you will need to contact them.
Second in order to roll back to Mavericks you will need to resort from your last Mavericks backup, the one done before the upgrade to Yosemite.  There is no other way to go go back to an earlier OS version.

  • Running 10.7.5, cannot update to Mavericks

Running 10.7.5, downloaded migration assistant, still cannot update to Mavericks!
I go to the app store, log in, and get nothing when I click update. It won't even initiate download.
This has been going on for a week and I just don't know what to make of it,
I even verified my disk and repaired disk permissions....very frustrating.
    Please someone, anyone, help.

Do you mean the new, tall ones just released?
Try just re-selecting the drive as the destination.
If that doesn't help, try a hard reset of the Airport per Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ (if you do have the new model, that article may not apply to it. See the Setup Guide that came with it).
If still no help, try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion

I am considering to downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion, and understand I would loose the maps app and some features... but is it worth it it so I dont have to continuously reboot my mac, so I can use a program every time ?
The problems I am having with mavericks, even when I have done a few tweaks , is that after running a few programs such as mail, safari, garageband  first and then loading photobooth... photobooth or any video app tends to lag , and the video is recorded lagging. A reboot fixes this if i start the program after reboot and not run any programs before.
Another issue is when I am doing my artwork, drawing in photoshop or manga studio... the pen tablet begins to lag as well, so I would have to save my work, reboot and then continue working until Mavericks starts misbehaving again.
This mac had its drive wipped clean before It became my personal mac, and I requested Mountain Lion, since I prefered it, but Mavericks was installed.
I dont mind Mavericks... its just this rebooting to fix or refresh system... is getting annoying when I need to get some artwork done.

I'm sorry to hear that you have had issues trying to work with your Officejet 8600 since upgrading to Mac OS X 10.9.
I have included a link to the full feature software for your Officejet 8600 printer in Mac OS X 10.9. If you still have the driver from your previous operating system loaded on your Mac please uninstall the printer before installing with the updated driver. • Why i cannot downgrade my iphone 4s ios7 to ios6

why i cannot downgrade my iphone 4s from ios 7 to ios 6
ios 7 is slow  it is not good plz help me

You cannot go back because Apple has never provided a mechanism for downgrading any version of iOS to an earlier version. As roaminggnome suggested, try the usual steps: restart, reset, restore.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you try restoring from a backup and that doesn't fix the problem, try restoring to factory settings and, if the problem goes away, then synching your apps. You'll lose the app data and settings, but if the problem is due to a corrupt cache or settings file, that should cure it.
If none of that helps, your iPhone may have developed a hardware fault and will need to be take or sent to Apple.
    Regards.

  • Downgrading from Mavericks to Mountain Lion

So currently I'm not satisfied with having Mavericks OS X on my macbook, particularly because of the gradually decreasing disk space that happens each time I turn on my macbook. I've attempted to clear caches like the IconServices in order to make space, but more space is gradually depleted, especially when I use third-party software like VueScan, which I find essential to my lifestyle. I wish to downgrade from Mavericks back to the Mountain Lion OS I initially had when I received macbook. Before I do, I need to ask the following:
    1) Will I need to buy a new set of the OS software, or will I be able to perform a downgrade through the restart-and-recovery process I've seen posted?
    2) Should I backup my drive? If so, what would you recommend I use? (PS. I did not perform a backup before upgrading to Mavericks)

    TheArashi wrote:
can I clean install Mountain Lion instead if I choose to do this?
If you use Internet Recovery (Command + Option + R during restart; hold until you see a spinning globe and progress bar) - it'll take a while to connect to Apple's servers - up to 15 minutes. In any case, once you're there, you'll see a Utilities window. Choose Disk Utility and choose to erase your drive (or course, back up your stuff first!). When that is done, back to the Utilities window and choose to install Mac OS X. If yours came with mountain lion, that is what you should be getting as internet recovery/erasing the drive will result in reinstalling the original OS version. Be sure not to erase your hard drive until after you're booted into recovery and are at the Utilities window.

  • Made the mistake of "downgrading" to mavericks.

Made the mistake of "downgrading" to Mavericks on my Mac - not impressed - lots of pointless features. Also unable to sync Calendars & Contacts with iPad & IPhone without using iCloud. Is it possible to sync without using iCloud with Mavericks? Is there a simple way of going back to the previous OS? Thanks.

This should install the original version that came with your model:

    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
