Cannot get Mail Service to bypass port 25

I'm running SLS 10.6. on a Mini connected via Cox home internet. It is a standalone server which will see only light duty handling wikis, blogs, and small mailing lists for just a handful of users.
Port 25 is blocked by default, so I'm trying to use port 587 instead.
I have:
• modified the master.cf file as suggested in several other threads
• opened port 587 on my router (Time Capsule) - I can see the port is open remotely via Network Utility
AFAIK I have everything set up properly according to the documentation, but I cannot send or receive mail. However, if I attempt to send mail via squirrelmail using the web interface the messages do get bounced back, and I can see these bounced back messages with a remote POP mail client.
So what now?

My point was that if you change the port (which you can do, and that MacOSXHints article walks through) no mail will flow through your server unless the remote systems that are trying to send you mail (or send mail through you) are reconfigured to use the same port.
e.g. if you switch your mail server from 25 to 2525 then nothing's going to happen until everyone else knows that you're using 2525 for SMTP.
Now, in this case it's (relatively) easy to change your Mail.app client to send mail through port 2525, but there is no way to tell other mail servers to do the same - every other mail server in the world will try to connect to port 25.
Understood. I have seen others post that they have used a relay (say through DNYDNS.org) pointed to another port (587 for example) to get around this. I am on the right track here?

That's why I asked what your goal was here - if your intent/expectation is that this mail server will handle mail for your domain and that other mail servers will be sending messages to you then this approach is doomed to failure. It's only viable if you control all the client systems that are using it.
My goal is for this server to send occasional emails to a few people via mailman lists and wiki groups, as well as push notification for iCal events. It won't be doing any heavy duty email, we have remotely hosted email service for that.

Thanks. However...these links are to basic troubleshooting.  Good stuff, except I -- like it seems others -- have multiple email accounts coming into their iPhones (my case, iPhone 5 running latest version of iOS) that until this past Friday evening (September 12, 2014).... worked perfectly, then just all stopped.
In my case, I also lost access to an internet forum I frequent multiple times daily.  All worked fine, until things abruptly stopped working the evening of September 12.
Seems like anything with a stored login/password got hosed.
I went into the profiles to make sure my passwords were still there (thought they may have somehow gotten wiped out), but they were there.  I re-entered them just in case, no change.
Now just this morning, Sunday September 14, two emails from the same (employer) email account have trickled in.  But nothing from the others (gmail, yahoo mail).
Spouse is having same issue on an iPhone 5.

  • Cannot get mail, connection to the service failed after iOS7

After upgrading to iOS7, I am getting repeated "Cannot Get Mail:  The connection to the server failed." message everytime I open the email.  I click OK and after it goes away, I do get email later.  But it happens everytime now.  Reset the iPad but still happening.  Do I have to hard reset the darn thing?  Any ideas?

    Don't hard reset.
Instead, go to Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars and the to Accounts. Note the settings for your iPad, then delete the account - and then reenter the information. Make sure it's 100% correct.
Many, many people - myself included - had to reenter email settings after the iOS7 update.

  • ERROR: Cannot start mail services, configuration directory does not exist

I'm running an Xserve G5 with one internal boot drive and one RAID using the other two internal drives. I used Apple's Disk Utility to set-up the RAID.
Back in early December, I moved my mail database and mail store to the RAID. Ever since, when I restart the server, the mailaccess.log generates the following error:
Jan 23 18:51:33 mail master[47]: ERROR: Cannot start mail services, configuration directory does not exist: /Volumes/RAID/mail.data/db
I'm speculating this is a timing error that gets created when Postfix initially can't find the RAID. Then, it must try again and find it because the error message does not repeat and mail starts running.
Is this something to worry about?

    Hi Joel,
You're right, it's a timing issues. The mail system is ready for work before the file system is mounted. It's benign.

  • Mail server log says: master[50]: ERROR: Cannot start mail services...

Recently, after a year or more of relatively smooth service, my OS X Server 10.4.11 Mail services has been locking up daily.
I was finally able to get some information from the log files (I am a noob to this) and saw the following right after my most recent reboot of the server:
Oct 5 09:51:11 mm1 master[50]: ERROR: Cannot start mail services, configuration directory does not exist: /Volumes/Data/mail/var/imap
I checked the server and that directory is indeed there on the partition named "DATA", so I am baffled as why the server does not thing the configuration directory exists?

Thanks Alex for the feedback. You are helpful as always!
It's good to know that the message I am getting from the mail server about the configuration files is only a temporary thing. Although I find it strange that the mail service doesn't know where its config files are since it is specified in the mail server setup.
I looked at the log files you mentioned and do not see anything that looks like a specific problem with the mail services themselves.
Recently, however, I have been having recurring problems where my mail server and my Web/Database server have both become unresponsive at nearly the same time even though they are on different class A networks to where I cannot access them via ARD, Server Admin and even SSH. That is usually when my mail server goes offline. I was afraid it was because of that configuration error I was seeing, but think now that the problem could be something else entirely (maybe some kind of network problem or denial of service hacking attack, no idea).
    Thanks again.

  • Cannot Get Mail Sending to Work

I cannot get Mail to work for sending on my other computer. (The one I keep using because my Canon scanner drivers work there but not on a "modern" system. Boo to Canon for not updating drivers for 10.6.)
I keep getting these server messages. What's my problem? The port number? What should it be?

I have a message sitting in the outgoing box. When I try to send it I get:
Verify that you have addressed this message correctly. Check your SMTP server settings in Mail Preferences and verify any advanced settings with your system administrator.
The server response was: 5.7.1 Relaying not allowed: [email protected]
You can try to send using a different server. All messages will use this server until you quit or change your network settings.
Below that I have three server choices: smtp.me.com, smtp.me.com:dennis briskin, and smtp.me.com:[email protected] The last one should not work in any case, I believe.

  • Email error - "cannot get mail"

    Hi,
Just hoping for a little help!
We recently had an email account disconnected by our provider in error (we changed from a mobile Internet connection to home ADSL & requested an email retention, which didn't happen!)
After weeks of dealing with our incompetent provider we have finally got the email address reconnected however I am unable to get it to work on any of our devices (iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 3, or home laptop). The account is definately active as emails are accessible through the providers website. The email address is an "additional mailbox" to the primary mailbox connected with the adsl.
The email address worked fine on our devices & laptop prior to the disconnection.
With the reconnection our provider advised we had to change the email settings to now be a pop3 account and provided the relevant details regarding servers, ports etc.. These details are exactly the same as the primary email address I have set up on all devices and which works perfectly.
I have tried deleting the account and re-adding, I have rebooted the devices and have double triple checked the settings. Still nothing! I just receive an error message saying "cannot get mail. The username or password for "pop3.xxxx.com" is incorrect."  Though, I know the password is correct as its the same one we use to log in to the mailbox on our providers website and access the email.
Would anyone have any insight as to why only this particular email address can not be added to the devices "mail app"??  I love the ease of being able to just tap the mail icon and see all my different email accounts. I'd prefer to not have to manually login to our providers website to access mail on one account.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    B

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • What does Cannot get mail The connection to the server failed mean?

How can I access my mail - when I try a messages stating 'Cannot get mail - The connection to the server failed'
I dont know what to do!

Usually there is not a password, SSL is set wrong, the server name is wrong, or the Port is wrong.
Go toSettings > Mail, Contacts,Calendars, then the Mail Account and see if the Incoming Server is some form of STP server specified, then that a password is set, and the if that is all correct go to Advanced and see how SSL is set.

  • Iphone 5. cannot get mail. no internet connection available.

I have the iphone 5. My carrier is Sprint. I can get email only when connected to wi-fi. When no wi-fi is available I get a pop up message that says: cannot get mail. no internet connection available.
I am sure I am just missing a setting or something to correct this. Any ideas?
    Thank you!

I experienced this problem firsthand with a Sprint iPhone 5 about a month ago, telling me it had no internet connection and could not check my email (which was Gmail, set up through the native Mail app, using default settings). I can confirm that restarting the phone (holding home + power buttons until restart) temporarily fixed the problem but it quickly returned. Toggling Airplane mode did nothing. The problem did return within the same day after a period of time. I have since switched back to AT&T.
Interstingly, my sister had the same issue with her brand new Sprint iPhone 5 this week. She called Sprint and the customer service representative confirmed that this is a problem that only affects Sprint iPhone 5 users who use Gmail. The rep told her that it affects Gmail both in the native Mail app and also in the Gmail app, but web use still works (I haven't confirmed this). The rep also said that Sprint is aware of the problem and working on a fix that would be delivered in the form of a "software update" but there was no clarification if that was an iOS update or a Sprint carrier update.
That's all the info I have now, but if you're a Sprint iPhone user and experiencing this problem, please do call Sprint and let us know what you find out.

  • Yahoo Mail - Unable to delete and Cannot Get Mail errors

A few days ago my Yahoo mail started acting up.
I keep on getting "Unable to move message" errors when trying to delete mail. The proper folder is selected as the trash folder under settings. Sometimes message do delete however, but mostly they do not.
I am also getting periodic Cannot Get Mail errors, but mostly I am able to receive mail.
This leads me to believe that this might be a yahoo issue (I opened a support request with them also) I have deleted the account from my iPhone and recreated it several times, but the problem persist.
Anybody else having similar issues with Yahoo mail ?
    Thanks
PS I have Yahoo Mail Plus with POP access

I opened a ticket with Yahoo, a day later they came back and advised that they made some changes to my account, but it still does not work.
There is something strange about how Apple and Yahoo communicates, I think there is some exchange in the middle that is causing the problems. The reason for me saying this is the error I got periodically stating that "Cannot Get Mail, The user name or password for imap.apple.mail.yahoo.com is incorrect". Why imap.APPLE.mail.yahoo.com ???
I did however setup a "Other" mail type account using the POP and SMTP settings from Yahoo and it works like a charm now, no more problems and I can now even use a different reply to e-mail address. Only issue might be that you no longer have the Yahoo side custom mail folders on the iPhone, but this is no big deal for me.
For the incoming server I used pop.mail.yahoo.com with my Yahoo username and password (username without @yahoo.com)
For outgoing, SMTP, Hostname I used smtp.mail.yahoo.com with my Yahoo username and password (username without @yahoo.com), SSL = ON, authentication = Password and server port 465
Under advanced settings for outgoing mail server, Use SSL = ON , authentication = Password and server port 995.
I am not claiming that I understand all of the above, but it works. Hopefully this may point you in the right direction.

  • IPad2 cannot get mail from inside work wlan

Everything on my iPad2 works fine when I am at home on my home network.
At work, I login through a wifi wlan router using my work user name and password.  At that point, the connection to the exchange server works fine as do the internet and intranet connections.  However every time I try to access my mobileme or Gmail accounts, I get the following notice (sub the gmail server of the gmail warning):
    Cannot Get Mail
    The mail server "mail.mac.com" is
not responding.  Verify that you have
entered the correct account info in
    Mail settings.
    OK
Again, when I get home, the connection picks up and all my email and calendar information is connected and up-to-date when I open either app.  I suspect that this has to do with a blocked port on our firewall.  I have no idea which one, or how to fix this.
Has anyone else seen this and figured out how to fix it?

Our IT group is PC only, so there will be no help there...
As to the question about the gmail sever, just substitute "imap.gmail.com" for the "mail.mac.com".  Other than that, the error message is identical.
I can log in to gmail in safari on the ipad just fine, but mobileme does not let you log in from safari.  Instead, it walks you through the setup of the mobileme account on the ipad - which doesn't help much...

All customers should now have the ability to send and receive email through Suddenlink’s email service, and the vast majority should have full service, including access to all mail, folders, contacts, and settings. We will continue working until the remainder of customers have full email service restored. I'm very sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience as we continue to work to restore full email service for all customers.

  • Cannot Get Mail (iPod touch and iPad)

    Hi all.
Had to move from MobileMe to iCloud.  So I moved the iMac from OS X 10.6.8 to 10.7.4 (Lion).
Then moved from MobileMe to iCloud.
On my initial test, on the day of the moves, I could send and receive emails without problems on the iMac, the iPod, the iPad and on the iCloud site.
Then, one day later, I couldn't receive emails on the iMac.  As was suggested here in Discussions, I turned SSL on for my main account;  this automatically changed the port number (!?) and fixed the problem.
Except that today, I can receive emails on the iMac and on the iCloud site, but both the iPod and the iPad (both at IOS 5.1.1) display the message "Cannot Get Mail - The user name or password for "Name_of_my_account" is incorrect."
I KNOW that I made no change to either the user name or the password.
Anyone have a clue as to what the problem is this time???
    Thanks!

    Hi all.
    My problem solved, kind of:
realized that my ISP support an IMAP server.  I was already using their email as my main email address, and only used MobileMe for synchronisation purposes.  (And in order to achieve that, I needed to configure two accounts, etc.)
So what I did is simple:  I deleted all my mail accounts (on iMac, iPod and iPad), recreated one mail account using my ISP's IMAC server:  BINGO!  mail accounts on all three devices are now in sync.  I then created iCloud accounts on each device to sync Contacts, Calendars, etc, BUT NOT MAIL.
(By the way, since I had about 100 emails in my Inbox that I did not care to read, file or trash immediately, I exported the Inbox before deleting the accounts and then re-imported them into the new IMAC account.)
    Good luck to all!
