Cannot printer share in Yosemite

This follows my question here: Cannot printer share in Mavericks.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to printer share since upgrading both the iMac and MacBook Air to Mavericks. Upgrading both to Yosemite has not, unfortunately, fixed the problem. As before:
The iMac can print to my HP OfficeJet Pro 8000 A809 as always. It still has "Share this printer on the network" ticked. But now I cannot print from the Air.
I removed the printer on the Air and added it back, but get "Unable to download the software from the server at this time."
I therefore downloaded all HP printer drivers and rather than selecting the printer from the "Nearby Printers" list, clicked "Add Printer or Scanner ...", selected the printer there, waited for "Gathering printer information", clicked Use _ Select Software, and picked the selected the printer in question. Clicked Add.
I go to print something, and I get "Printing - Printing page 1, 34% complete...". And that's where it sits.
Help. Any ideas most welcome. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for that good troubleshooting.
Well, it does sound like a network problem (583 ms is a very long response time).
(but I can't rule out the need to reinstall Mavericks - yet)
Tell me a little about your local network. Model router, location/distance between iMac & MacBook & router, are you in an apartment with many other routers around you, etc? Both computers using wifi?
Things to try:
I would scan for signal strength and to see other competing routers on same channel. Use the scan tool in Mavericks - read here:
http://ambroselittle.wordpress.com/2013/11/09/mac-wi-fi-scanner-in-os-x-maverick s/
(you can reduce interference by setting your router's channel to a different one than everybody else is using.)
I would also set up the router to have "reserved IP addresses" for each computer in the router's online admin web page. This reduces the searching that gets done by computers and router. You can usually use the same IP address each computer currently has, just make it reserved. On my netgear router, setting up the reserved IPs is on a different menu/page than "connected devices."
Please report back with your results.

  • I Cannot print from imac iPhoto 9.6 using Yosemite 10.10.1to Epson printer? How do I fix this problem?

I Updated my iMac to Yosemite 10.10.1 and cannot print from iPhoto 9.6 to my Epson picture mate PM240 photo printer. I had no problem printing before the upgrade. It seems like I don't have a connection between the iMac and Epson Printer. I checked all connections and they are correct. I visited the Epson site and there were no updates available for the PM240. The problem arises after I select a picture to print. When I select PRINT from the FILE the spinning color wheel begins and I cannot go further.
I Contacted Apple and the technical adviser ran the iPhoto troubleshooting programs within IPhoto. This seemed to solve the problem, but the problem almost immediately reocurred. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Thanks for the replies guys.  Epson put me through a complex set of instructions to install an earlier driver.  The problem was not solved.  Apple also tried to solve the provlem by getting rid of the printer, unplugging it etc and then re starting and checking computer/printer communication by printing a test page from the system preferences/Pring & Fax options.  This worked proving the the computer and printer are talking to each other.
The printer works properly as a stand alone unit.  That is, I can copy and print and scan and print with no problems.
The Apple support guy didn't suggest any Apple alternative drivers so I assume there aren't any.
Neither the Epson nor Apple assistants seemed interested in the printer generated error message.  I would have thought it would at least provide a clue to the problem to someone with technical expertise.
It seems that there are a lot of problems with the 10.6.8 update so maybe Apple will get to work and bring it up to scratch.  I hope it gets things right soon.

    I have this problem too.
I've installed the most recent drivers for these printers and unfortunately it's still not compatible with Yosemite.
I guess all we have to do is wait until Ricoh/Lanier brings out an updated driver for us

  • I downloaded Yosemite and now I cannot print on Mac Word, Excel, and Power Point

    Please help.
I download Yosemite a few weeks ago and now I cannot print documents on Mac Word, Excel, and Power Point. I attempted to reinstall the software and it still doesn't allow me to print documents. Below you will see the error messages I get when I try to print. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Update MS Office suite to be the most up-to-date version and also run Software Update to see if there are updated printer drivers for your printer.

  • Hp F4500 cannot print in greyscale in iMac yosemite

hello! how can i print and copy in greyscale with my F4500 in my imac?? thanks in advance

Hi , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand that you cannot print in greyscale with your HP Deskjet F4500 on Mac OS X 10.10. I am happy to look into this for you! I would recommend to make sure that your printer is installed properly using the Apple Software Update, I would also make sure the Mac is up-to-date as well, Get software updates for your Mac. Since there are no full feature software and drivers, and only the basic driver available through the OS X 10.10 Operating System, this might not be an option for you. However, please take a look at the following articles: OS X Yosemite: Print documents. How to print in Black and White in OS X. Hope this information is helpful, and have a nice day!  “Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.”

    Hi
    1. Click on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen and select System Preferences.
    2. Click on Printers and Scanners pane.
    3. You need to highlight your printer on the left hand side and remove it from the list by clicking on little "-" button
    4. Click on little "+" button and add it back.
You may also try to reset printer settings

  • Windows Printer Share-Worked... now its not

I have 7 computers, mac and PC that are all able to connect to a printer share except for 1 computer. The Lexmark T522 is connected via Serial to a Windows XP box that has standard printer sharing enabled. For months all the computers on the network could print fine to it fine. 2 days ago i installed the latest security update on our intel-imac... now it cannot connect to the printer.
Was there something in the latest security update that messed up printing to windows printer shares?
I go to printers and faxes, Add a printer(the other was deleted through my troubleshooting) I have to choose "more printers", and then have to choose our "workgroup (called workgroup)" I see the shared computers and select the one with the printer installed. I hit the "choose" button and get a request for username and password. I get after about 30 seconds "Unable to connect to server with provided username and password" "error 256" and an Okay button.
NOTE: i can connect via the same method with all the other macs here at our house (none of them have been updated with the latest security update yet though).

    Hey, man.
This started happening to me, too, right after I installed the latest security update. Suddenly I could no longer print to the Windows shared printer at work. Got the exact same error you got.
Thankfully, the printer happens to be wireless and ethernet enabled, so we were able to work around it. But after 4 hours of total troubleshooting, we haven't been able to figure out how to print to it as a shared printer.
    Weird,

  • Connect mac client to mac printer share across subnets

I need to share printers from a Mac.  I need to connect
Mac clients on different subnets to the Mac shared printers.  I installed
a Mac mini, connected to printers via HP JetDirect Socket (port 9100), and
shared them.  I was able to print from the Mac mini, and connect Mac
clients on the same subnet to the shared printers with Bonjour and print.
I moved the Mac mini to its intended location on another subnet.  I
immediately learned that Bonjour does not publish services across
subnets.  I could not find documentation on how to connect to a Mac shared
printer across subnets, but I did find some third party documentation (only some incomplete
documentation from Apple) on how to implement DNS-SD Service Discovery.  I
enabled DNS-SD and was able to publish the printer shares across subnets, but I
was still unable to connect to the printer shares from a Mac client.  I
found some third party documentation (none from Apple) on how to manually connect to a Mac
printer share by specifying the IP address of the server, specifying the CUPS
default IPP protocol, and the print queue name.  I was unable to connect
to the shared printers.  I receive ping replies from my Mac mini, and port
scan reveals that port 631 for IPP, CUPS default, is open.  Printer
sharing is configured so everyone can print. I am able to connect to the Mac
mini with VNC Screen Sharing.  I don’t see how this can be a network
    issue.
Macs don’t seem to like to connect to our Windows
shared printers because of our PaperCut software, and connecting Mac clients to
Windows printer shares and authentication is beyond the average user,
exacerbated by Macs not behaving the same as Windows when bound to an Active
    Directory domain.
I called Apple support, they escalated to Apple Enterprise
support.  Apple Enterprise support said they couldn’t help me beyond a
single network with no subnets, but Apple Engineering might be able to solve
    the problem for $695.
Why do I need to pay $695 to learn how to connect Mac
clients to Mac shared printers, something that should be easy and intuitive and
have documentation readily available?  Windows printer sharing is easy and
intuitive and documentation is readily available, and services are published
across subnets without have to implement DNS-SD.

Thank you for your reply.  I followed the instructions in the sybaspot.com site and in some of the included references to set up DNS-SD.  DNS-SD worked, but I couldn't connect the Mac client to the Mac shared printers.
    I also found http://www.papercut.com/products/ng/manual/ch-mac-printing-10-8-9.html#ch-mac-pr inting-10-8-9-sharing-printers.
I expanded my search and found this: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13940, last modified May 8, 2014.  I started work on my project February 2014.  Apple Support could have told me about this document.
PH13940 says: "The computers must be on the same local network as your Mac".  Apple must not consider multiple subnets one network.
PH13940 says: "Printer sharing is for printers attached directly to your Mac. You don’t need to share network printers, because they are already shared on the network."
Apple must define "network printers" as any printer with a network interface.  Microsoft defines network printers as printers shared by another computer.  TCP/IP ports are local ports on a Windows computer, so TCP/IP connected printers are local printers that can be shared.  Multiple users on a Mac all see the same connected printers.  Multiple users on Windows all see the same local printers, but network printer connections can be different for each user.
Apple must not see any value in accounting for printing and assigning the cost to the user or department.  We need to account for printing and cannot have any users bypassing the system by printing directly to printers.  I have created Access Control lists on the printers to limit connections to the specific IP addresses of our print servers.
The documents about setting up DNS-SD and IPP connections must have assumed USB connected printers on a Mac.  The odd thing is that I was able to share a network printer from the Mac mini when the client Mac was on the same subnet.  Is PH13940 wrong?

  • I cannot print a document I created on the Beta of Pages through iCloud.

I have an iMac Mid 2007.  I have installed OS X Yosemite, Version 10.10.l  I created a document on Pages, and was unable to access it.  I accessed it via iCloud, the Beta Version of Pages, and was able to edit it.  Now I cannot print it.  Any suggestions?

When you installed Pages v5, it automatically moved the older Pages ’09 v4.3 into /Applications/iWork '09 folder. If you want normal comment interoperability, you are advised to resume using the older version of Pages. Newer, is certainly not better with Pages v5.

  • How does one print to enterprise Windows print services in Yosemite? CUPS 2.0 problem?

One of my co-workers upgraded to Yosemite yesterday and it broke his ability to print to our corporate printing services (which are built around a Windows print server). Obviously, the printer discovery in the System Preferences can't find the Windows print server - that's never worked. However, we had previously been able to add a printer through the CUPS web front-end by adding a Windows printer and specifying an SMB URL in the format:
    smb://DOMAIN;USER:[email protected]/QUEUE-NAME
... which worked like a charm in Mavericks. However, Yosemite has upgraded to CUPS 2.0.0 and this no longer seems to work. Print jobs enter the CUPS queue, but authentication fails and they are not accepted by the remote server.
I've consulted the CUPS 2.0.0 documentation, and there's not really anything helpful there. In fact, there's no mention of SMB / Windows printing at all in the 2.0.0 documentation. Unfortunately our campus print services does not support IPP, LP, LPR, or JetDirect as options -- just Windows printing.
    Does anyone have a suggestion?

Just finished testing 10.10 printing via a Windows 2008 R2 print share. I also found that when trying to add the printer using CUPS I would get an authentication error. But if I added the printer using the Windows section of the Add printer pane, then I was able to print fine.
So with you mentioning that using the Windows section of the Add printer window has never worked (which is interesting because it's always worked for me) I want to suggest another approach to adding the printer, still using the Add printer window. With this window open you can right-click on the toolbar and select Customize Toolbar. You can then drag the Advanced icon to the toolbar. Then when you select this, you can set the Type menu to "Windows via spoolss" and then enter the URL as smb://servername/sharename. Select the supporting driver and click Add to complete.
Then when you select to print for the first time using this printer you will be prompted to authenticate. Enter the account details, set the save to Keychain option and OK to send the print job.
This worked fine for me and creates the same queue as using the Windows add printer setting. Curious to hear if this gets your co-worker printing again.

  • Cannot print PDF's today.

As of today, for no apparent reason, I cannot print any pdf files. All printed fine yesterday and before that. My sister said that she had the same problem today at work. We do not share any hardware or software. How can this be?

Oh, forgot to mention...if I leave the PDF file in the print Q it will print when I restart my computer, but that's the only way it will print. It's not my printers. I've tried both printers. I'm able to print every other type of file...just not Acrobat PDFs. Strange! Help!
