Canon 20D / 8MP pix / crashing iPhoto?

So, I just moved to a Canon 20D. File sizes are much larger.
I don't know if it's just my rash of general annoyances/bugs with the latest OS updates (including iTunes & iPhoto updates) that has made things just more unstable, or as far as iPhoto goes, the load of the pix is just too much. I have about 8000 total pix in my library currently.
Anyways, whatever it is, I'm having more crashes these days viewing/importing and generally using iPhoto.
Can it handle these large photos or do I need to move to Aperture or something else?
Thanks

have you tried not directly importing but rather allowing the iPhoto library to remain where it is and aperture is just looking at it?
I realize this does not solve your second problem but frankly I would encourage you to not worry about the file structure on the computer as much as the availability of your photos to view and act upon them as you need.

  • Canon Ixus 400 now crashes iPhoto 5

I used to be able to seemlessly plug in my Ixus 400 Canon and iPhoto opened and imported the photos. Since version 5 all sorts of problems have occured: sometimes the camera isn't seen at all; when it is recognised it crashes after a couple of pictures. I have tried using ImageCapture - this works - eventually, after lots of plugging in camera, restarts etc and at least lets me get the files out.
Mostly though I have having to resort to mounting the camera card and importing them that way.
Any one else similar experience? Canon web site appears to have no help at all (US site doesn't even know the camera name!).

I have occasional problems with my ixus 700. iPhoto sometimes (quite often) crashes just at the end of importing photos.
Also, canon names their cameras differently in the states. I think you'll find this is your camera: http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=SupportDetailAct&fcategoryid=223 &modelid=8777

  • How to upload pix from iPhoto back to camera?

I am running iPhoto 6.0.5 and have a Canon Powershot S500. I have occasionally transfered pix from the iPhoto library back onto a Compact Flash card that I then take out of the camera and slip it into a digital picture frame to run a slideshow on the frame. I have before me a long set of instructions that I obviously wrote the last time I did this about a year ago involving setting up a window in Canon's ImageBrowser. I then transferred the pix from Iphoto to ImageBrowser and I was able to upload them from there to the camera. Since that time, my G5 crashed and I lost some programs including ImageBrowser. Since I don't seem to have the original Canon CD and their website does not seem to have the program available, I was trying to get the pix directly from Iphoto to the CF, but I can't seem to get the Export to work. Any ideas??

If the icon mounts on the desktop then it should work.
However, there can be complications. So
    1. Try export to the desktop, the drag from there to the icon.
    2. If you cannot export at all try Download BatchMod from
    http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/
And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/toad.hall/.Pictures/Forum/BatChmod.png
(Credit to Old Toad for this one).
    3. If you can export, but the card won't accept it, it is likely that the card is formatted as Fat 12 or 16, which are Windows formats that don't like Long Filenames, non-ascii characters (essentially the 26 letters and 9 digits and nothing else).
hope the solution is in there for you somewhere.

  • Unsupported Image Format?  CR2 from Canon 20d

ok, so my jpg's import fine. my problem is with my CR2 Raw pictures from my Canon 20d. I tried to import some. They import, all the metadata info is there, but there is no thumbnail in aperture and in the top viewer it says unsupported image format. Has anyone had this problem? After import why are the CR2 thumbnails missing and why do the viewers say Unsupported Image Format? Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Since I can't open the problem RAW files in Preview or import them into iPhoto, but can open them in ACR/Bridge or DPP, I'm fairly certain this has something to do with the underlying RAW support at the OS-level in Tiger -- and not just an Aperture issue.
I have had no problem with some older RAW files captured using my 20D. I think I may have upgraded the 20D's firmware since those images were shot -- could it be an incompatibility brought on by that?!?!

  • New problem connecting Canon 20D camera to OS 10.4.7

Hi, I'm new to the forum but have foud you having looking for an answer to a problem i have had. re: New problem connecting Canon 20D camera to OS 10.4.3 and the answers listed for it the problem has been occuring on my 3 Macs, all running OS 10.4.7 and firmware on the new 20D at 2.0.3. The camera would not connect to the Mac with any software.
Canon told me to make sure that the connection mode is set to normal (which didn't work) but today they tell me to change it to P2P and iPhoto recognised the camera and downloaded. Still can't use the canon software (camera not connected / recognised) but they have said that a senior technition will be contacting me so i will keep you up to date.
    All the best.

I have an update from my telephone conversation earlier today:
    Dear Customer,
Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding your Canon product.
From the information supplied it would appear that the update in operating system is the cause of the problem. We can confirm that Canon are currently investigating compatibility with the recent update of the Apple Macintosh operating sytem OSX 10.4.7. If any software updates are neccessary they will become available from :
    http://software.canon-europe.com/
    I'll update with more.....

  • Bug exposed when comparing Jpeg and RAW Photos taken with Canon 20D?

I'm using iPhoto 7.1 to manage my photos. My Digital SLR, the Canon 20D, can be set to save photos as both RAW (CR2 files) and Jpeg (JPG files). Both of these files can be imported into iPhoto with no problem.
The problem that I have is that these photos that should be identical, have two major discrepancies.
    1. Their resolution are NOT the same. (3504x2332 for CR2, 3504x2336 for JPG)
    2. The colors appear different (CR2 appears reddish, JPG appears normal)
Interesting to note: if I export the same CR2 file out of the iPhoto library (export it as Kind='original'), and open it with IrfanView running on Windows 2000, the photo is viewed with the expected resolution of 3504x2336 and the color appears normal (i.e. not reddish).
I'm a new Mac user, and relatively new to digital photography, so any advice or suggestions would be appreciated! I've heard of color profiles and adjustments, but I'm not sure how that works. Perhaps I could be pointed to a HOWTO type document?
    Cheers

    OK, next RAW files again.
These hold the data the sensor 'saw' when you took the shot together with 'metadata' such as aperture, shutter speed, white balance settings, ISO setting etc - lots of data in fact.
Most programs do not alter RAW files at all - they are the digital negative and should not be altered.
The latest iPhoto treats all newly imported photos in this manner - RAW/JPG or other format. It keeps a copy of the original in a folder called originals, and any edits/crops you make are applied and saved either as a modified JPG or TIFF. This non-destructive editing is a great feature that many RAW editors allow so you can go back to the original image if you mess things up. Applying the principle to JPGs etc is equally as important.
Canon's Digital Photo Professional is a free RAW processor program you can download from their site - certainly worth a look, but you may well find iPhoto simpler if not as flexible. On Windows, not sure about Mac OS, DPP does actually alter (or add) some metadata to RAW files - it doesn't alter the 'sensor data' but somehow embeds edited values to the RAW file so they display as edited next time - you can go back to original but I doubt other software will understand these tweaks.
Digital cameras are getting better and better at getting white balance etc correct, however RAW files are great mainly for two things.
Firstly - in camera white balance settings are simply those applied to JPGs the camera produces. Set it to fluorescent and take a shot of a cloudy scene and the JPG may look awful. With the RAW you can change the white balance after the event and is a real image saver. I particularly like software that lets you use a 'dropper' to choose a neutral grey shade on the image to set the white balance.
Secondly - over/under exposure. As RAW files hold more light intensity detail you can often bring out shadow detail from underexposed images or recover blown highlights from images that are unusable as JPGs. There are limits to this latitude of course.
In camera JPGs are often all you need - the RAWs just give added flexibility.
Next thing I'd say is not to get too hung up about profiles at this stage.
Yes, you can pay for generic profiles or even expensive personalised profiles for the 20D - there are some gains in compatible software (sometimes the profiles are designed to work with particular software!). Not necesarily huge gains though, so I'd say keep it simple to start with.
If there's one thing it's worth profiling, then it's your monitor.
I often use the analogy of a TV with a video still image from DVD or VCR.
Say you adjust the brightness/contrast/colour/sharpness of the TV then the image can be made to look wildly different on different settings.
However the actual image being displayed is not itself altered at all by the DVD player or VCR on pause. Turn the TV off it goes black, but the DVD/VCR still outputs that same image. It's just displayed differently or not at all!
    Translate this to editing photos.
The RAW or JPG will be processed by iPhoto according to a particular colour space, say sRGB or AdobeRGB - now how on earth do you know that the monitor's brightness/contrast/saturation are at the correct level to display the image correctly? Is it brightnes 50%/75%/20%?
The answer is the monitor profile which tweaks the output of the monitor towards a preset calibration - this is for a given brightness/contrast/colour setting (not all monitors have exhaustive adjustments but some do). Generic profiles which come with Macs are better than nothing, and indeed often quite close to an individually calibrated monitor profile.
You can however calibrate your monitor either by eye or using a hardware accessory.
Open your System Preferences folder and choose Displays.
Click the colour tab and remember the profile name highlighted!
Click on any others to see how different profiles affect the display - the other profiles will invariably be wrong for the monitor but they show the effect.
These other profiles DO NOT make you system display an image say as sRGB or AdobeRGB - what they imply is that the monitor can display the range of sRGB or AdobeRGB - it can't! It can display what IT is capable of displaying.
It is the image profile that makes software display it in the sRGB or AdobeRGB or other colour space. The monitor profile allows the image to be displayed more accurately by mapping available colours it can display or close fits to the one's the image contains.
There is a Calibrate button in this tab which should help you Calibrate your monitor by eye (I think I've not used it).
You can also buy hardware accessories to accurately calibrate your monitor (I use an EyeOne Display by Gretag Macbeth - older version - there are far more expensive and also reasonable cheaper options out there). The hardware devices basically cycle through a display of 'known colours'. The device's software knows what colour it's trying to display, the device usually hangs over the display and measures what's actually displayed, then reprograms the way the graphic card displays colours and also creates a custom monitor profile - this process of calibration optimises your monitor's display.
You can also calibrate or get custom printer profiles made to optimise printer output, but you won't be doing that. Some online photo sites do however supply profiles which match their photo printers so you can tweak your images to match output on their hardware.
Most photo sites that the public use however will assume that the images are sRGB. If you send an AdobeRGB image for printing it may be treated as sRGB and printed incorrectly if that photo printer's software doesn't take account of embedded profiles.
I said it was complex and confusing!
    Continued again!

  • Importing photos via Canon 20D

    Hi Everyone,
Has anyone out there had success importing Canon 20D photo files using the iPod Camera Connector? If so is there a file size limit, data transfer limit? Will it transfer raw images? Can raw images be viewed in the iPod?
The compatibility chart states my camera is compatible BUT if you read the customer review another Canon 20D user is unable to import images from his/her camera. The review has me wondering. Page cited below.
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/6404003/wo/ID42Z qjuZMdp2ULBQYq1ix0Uf2h/5.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.0.3
    Thanks!

    Hi Patrick,
Thanks so much for your feedback. Your line of thinking is definitely one option I’m still considering. OTM’s are definitely sweet and have great functionality.
In the end, I may have to get that Epson OTM Scott Kelby uses on Photoshop TV but then again, it’s just another something to schlep-along with lenses and all the rest. Where as, my iPod goes where ever I go-camera or no!
I picked up the 60 GB, 5G thinking the 17 GB of A/V files already loaded on it pretty much exceeds my expectations. That leaves me with a little under 40 GBs “free.” So that 40GB drive could potentially be filled-only temporarily now-with a max of about 4000 raw images (1GB-CF=95 raw pix) that could then be expeditiously imported into my desk top computer permanently, such that the files on the iPod could be deleted immediately after transfer. I usually try take no > 3 GB of files per shoot-otherwise it gets too cumbersome (for me) to edit quickly.
So here is my sweet dream: Shoot about 3GBs of pix/day which get effortlessly imported into iPod x 12 days on location while listening to i-Tunes-gladly leaving the lap top at home! I want for no more. Once again, my iPod’s functionality will have exceeded my dreams.
To that end, think I am just going out right now to pick up that camera connector and pray that it & my 20D get along really well together.

  • Import from Sony NEX-6 crashes iPhoto?

My wife got a new Sony NEX-6. We're back from a vacation and I'm trying to import her photos into iPhoto.  After crashing iPhoto about 20 times, I still haven't imported half of her photos.  I have copied all her photos to my Mac, and I just drag a folder of them to iPhoto.  If it's not the first time I've tried to import that forlder, I tell iPhoto not to import photos already imported.  iPhoto works a while and then crashes. When I restart it, it says it found photos that weren't imported and would I like to import them. I say yes, and some of the photos it had been working on when it crashed end up getting imported.  Repeat until you pull your hair out.  This problem is not just with one memory card, but occurs with all eight memory cards she used in her NEX-6 on our trip.  I imported all my photos from my Canon S95 without a hitch, as normal.  But there's something about importing photos that were taken on a Sony NEX camera that causes iPhoto to crash quite often.
My wife uses Aperture and didn't have a problem importing her photos into Aperture.
I've seen discussions on other fora about others seeing the same problem with other Sony NEX cameras, so I know this isn't just me.
    Any thoughts?

My wife took several thousand photos on our trip.  iPhoto will import anywhere between 5 and 123 photos before it crashes, so it's not every photo that crashes iPhoto, but just some of them.  (I don't remember the exact numbers of photos that iPhoto has been able to import before crashing, but sometimes it's just a few, and sometimes it can import more than a hundred before it crashes.  So, to do an exhasutive test of what you're describing, I'd have to manually open and save a lot of photos to prove anything.  Are you thinking of this as a fix, or just a way to gather more information about the problem?

  • Canon 20D workflow help

HELP! i have a new canon 20d, my first digital SLR. i love the camera, but am completely perplexed by my workflow situation. i have Photoshop, iphoto, and the software that came with the 20d. i use a card reader to transfer images to my mac.
does anyone have a simple, efficient process for saving/editing/archiving the raws and jpegs?
in other words, how do i download from the card reader, save both raw photos and jpegs and then edit? what workflow works best for you?
so far, since i can't figure out which programs i should be using, i've defaulted to iphoto. i dowload directly into iphoto and have been editing my jpegs using iphoto. but cannot figure out the best way to access the raw photos and archive them onto cd's/dvd's. it took me a long time to even figure out where the raws were stored. (was able to do this with some helpful hints from another kind user on this forum.)
i found the raws in some 'originals' folders in my picture photo/iphoto library folder but the thumbnails are blank images. i tried to drag them into photoshop hoping i could view and save the raws there, then backup to a disc, but it did not recognize the type of file. so, right now, none of my photos are backed up onto cd's/dvd's as i don't know the best way to do this, and am unsure as to whether saving the raws that i found in the originals folders even makes sense if photo shop doesn't recognize them.
    also,
i still have some photos on the original cards..so i can theoretically start the process fresh, if anyone thinks i should start from scratch...
i could really use help with the basics:
ie. once i've taken the photos, what do i do next? how should i set up my program preferences, which programs are best to use, how can i easily archive, etc.
if i haven't provided enough info, just let me know.
    thanks!
    eardog

I've been looking into this exact scenario (before purchasing FCE). A videographer friend of mine told me about a free software package called MPEG Streamclip to transcode the video to pretty much anything else, since the h.264 is apparently terrible to work with!
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
I have NOT sued it yet, but my friend suggested I look at it because he uses it as well. He's a Final Cut Pro guy, but I'm guessing that this will work in FCE too? let me know what you find out. I'm on the fence of buying FCE!

  • Camera Raw Ver 8 does not open Canon 20D images

I recently updated Photoshop CS6, Camera Raw plugin to Ver 8.1.0.43  Now for some reason the CR2 images from my Canon 20D will not open. These images used to open just fine in Camera Raw Ver 7.
Has CR Ver 8 dropped support for the Canon 20D raw images?

The error message I get is "Could not complete your request because of a disk error".  I get this message even if I open Bridge as admin. However, if I login as superadmin, then I am able to open the CR2 files in Camera Raw.  It is not clear what changed in the application that affected these permission levels. I believe the error message is not representative of the issue since the disk tests as healthy.

  • Deleting photos from iPhoto trash crashes iPhoto

I've been a bit remiss in deleting photos from iPhoto trash and now when I attempt to delete the 6379 photos in there it crashes iPhoto.  I have tried the right click on the trash in the left menu bar and also the "iPhoto" > Empty Trash.  How can I get rid of these photos?

This will happen if you try and delete that many shots from iphoto at one go. We generally recommend that you empty the trash in batches of 100 or so at a time.

What format are they? Tiif? Jpeg? You can compress them with a lot of apps - including Preivew and just about any graphics editor out there. I'm not sure that 45mb would crash iPhoto thogh, are yo sure that's the cause? I know that some folks have mentioned pixel dimensions causing issues, as can color profiles.

  • Downloaded photos from Canon 20D to iPod

I was not able to get my 20D to downloard to my new iPod. It says unrecognized device. The iPod specs state that Apples Photo Reader Adapter ($35) works with the 20D but I couldn't get it to work. I tried another adapter at the store and got the same result on my iPod and another one at the store. I don't see any settings to change on my 20D so not sure what's wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

I have th canon 20d and ipod 60G video. Make sure your camera is set to PTP you'll find it in the settings menu on your camera then Soft reset your iPod(hold down menu and the center button till it resets), then plug everything back in and it should work. . Make sure you also have the upgraded firm ware for the 20d. it should be 2.0.3 and you could get it from the canon website.

  • Canon 20D USB to an Android Tablet - is it possible to tether my Canon 20D to an Android Tablet

I would like to tether my Canon 20D to an Android Tablet so that my images are saved automatically and installantly to the CF card and to the Android Tablet.
    Is this possible?

    Hi bruce_garofalo!
    Thank you for posting.
The EOS 20D cannot be tethered to an Android or an iOS device.  USB tethering is only possible with compatible Windows and Mac computers.
