Canon 5D3 thumbnails

Without upgrading from 10.6.8, is there any way to display thumbnails of RAW images from a Canon 5D3?
Why should I have to upgrade to a newer OS, simply to display thumbnails from a newer model camera?
jpegs display as thumbnails, but not RAW files.  I have never had to upgrade my OS in the past when a new camera came out.
Yes, I have the latest Camera Raw installed.
No, I do not use Aperture or Lightroom.

Canon's system requirement?  Have you discussed with them?

Thank you for your E-mail inquiry regarding the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital Camera.
It appears the OS X you're using does not support the RAW format from this camera model, as per the following Apple website.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3825
You may wish to confirm with Apple at this time, if the RAW compatibility update that they offer is supported for use with your OS.
In other words, Apple does not support the RAW format from a 5D3 with OS 10.6.8.
Since it would be a very simple thing for Apple to do, it is just another case of their hard-sell strategy to force people to buy an upgrade.
If anyone knows of a utility that I can purchase that would convert 5D3 icons to thumbnails in my Mac folders, it would be appreciated.

  • Canon 5D3 + PP CS5.5.2

    hi
do you know if PP CS5.5.2 can import MOV files from Canon 5D3 ?
when i try it freezes  ...
i read somewhere that a workaround is to rename MOV files into MPG files but it doesn't sound very nice to me
    thanks for your help

What are your video settings in the Canon?
Whilst I have used a 7D for quite a while I therefore not used a 5D  Mark 3, I am aware that they do have a very high data rate video mode available.
I've not looked at the specs but it might account for your problem if you have used the high setting to record the video

  • Importing ONLY rated photos from Canon 5d3 to lightroom 4.4

Is there a way of rating a handfull of photos in the Canon 5d3 and import only the rated photos to lightroom 4.4?
I dont use the canon software supplied as it is just one more thing to do and will delay the process if i want to get news images out quickly.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the replies.
First, I don't have a card reader and yes, I probably should get one eventually.  To clarify, import is not slow, it simply does not even attempt to import.  When I connect my 50D with a card full of RAW files, LR detects it but it shows "No Photos Found."  I honestly don't think that it is LR's fault, it really seems like there is some obvious setting I have missed on either my camera or LR.
    Thanks.

  • Canon 5d3 turns into deathbed wishlist

I'm really blown away that the extremely heartfelt post i wrote last night was deleted by some bleeping moderator.
Typing in forum rules in the search box gives nothing in reply about whether or not you can put in that you're selling your gear and i'm guessing that there's some unwritten rule that you can't but i'll know for sure if some schmuck deletes this post as well. then kudos to you for successfully being a bleeping bleep.
I tried reaching out with thanks to give everyone a heads up that they have a great chance to pick up all of my videography supplies but NOOOOO someone wanted to just erase the post that took me over an hour to type out.
my dad's dieing, i'm selling all my camera stuff on ebay so that i can cover my mortgage and his wishlist over the next two months or so before his cancer takes him from my family,
I'm going to be listing about $9,000 worth of 5d3 supplies on ebay with the key in it SMCFDD (selling my camera for dad's dreams)  so that he and i can do everything he's ever wanted to do but didnt have the chance.
Im guessing this wont get out to anybody before some screwup feels like ruining my day two times in a row by deleting this post as well without giving me the common courtesy of emailing me telling me why he deleted it in the first place but if just one person out there reads this message and can spread the word that in itself would be wonderful.
selling an atomos ninja 2 with hdd and extra bay slot in case, a 5d3 with less than 1400 actuations, a glidecan 2000, a konova k2 slider, manfrotto video head, graphite sticks from sirui, a pile of lenses, a pile of batteries, memory cards, carryspeed viewfinder vf4, rode video mic pro, a kessler pocket jib traveler... etc.
Thanks to the whole community for helping me in the past learn how to use this camera, and to the schmuck who deleted my post, EMAIL ME NEXT TIME instead of just deleting it without notifying me or at least make a set of forum rules that stands out and can at the least be searched for by typing in "Rules" or "Forum Rules"

  • Canon 5D3 - Dropouts - I'm getting terrible dropouts using Transcend 1000x cards (any card). Help!

    Sorry for the dramatics...
My camera, my lovely Canon 5Dm3 is randomly and occasionally inserting nasty dropouts. I didn't even know that was possible on solid media!
I'm using Transcend 1000x CF cards, but periodically, I get a really nasty glitch that ruins much of the take.
I couldn't figure out how to embed or attach an image here, so I put an example of my take-ruining glitch up here:
http://matthewroddy.com/5d3/5dm3-dropout001.jpg (please don't mind that this take is out of focus, that part doesn't matter in this part of this take).
    I was using IPB 1920p24.
The glitches are all over several takes. Most, in fact. But I can't find anything consistent that might help me understand something *I* may have been doing wrong.
What's additionally odd is the glitches appear different depending on how i'm viewing them: QT, WMP, PremierPro CS6, etc.  Each give a slightly different twist on the glitch.
Does this bit of badness mean a bad sensor, bad media, bad processors, or what can I possibly do about this?

They may be trying to invoke the remapping technology of the formatting process.
Solid state memory can be "read" an unlimited number of times with no "wear" to the media, but a "write" is a destructive process.  Each time you "write" to a location, the operation technically damages the location (very slighlty, but it does.)  Normally an individual location should be able to handle tens of thousands (perhaps even hundreds of thousands) of writes before it goes bad, but you can have random locations that go bad significantly sooner than others.
Original flash media didn't use "memory leveling" and that meant the some memory locations were used much more than others... think of magnetic recording tape where you are recording music of different lengths... the tape at the beginning of the reel is always being re-written, but the last tiny bit of tape on the real is almost never used.  The same concept applied to early solid state media.
The "leveling" technology tries to use all locations on the card evenly.  It basically re-maps what the card thinks of as it's first available memory address so that it's not technically the first available physical address on the card and that way all locations on the card get used about the same amounts and this extends the life of the card.
If a location is actually going bad, a low-level format should hopefully pick it up.  A high level format doesn't actually write to every address on the card and zero it out... it merely declares all space to be free.   A low level format is supposed to "test" each location on the card by performing a write operation to make sure it actually works.  I suspect the camera's built-in "low level" checkbox on the format option doesn't _really_ do a low-level format because it all happens FAR too quickly to have technically tested every location on the card and I think THIS is why they suggest formatting on the computer.
In any event, if it detects a bad location, it typically does not notify you, it simply marks it as a bad location so that the card will never attempt to write to that location again... and moves on.
So my guess is they're trying to do a few low level format cycles to get the offending bad location(s) marked as bad so that the card will stop using any marginal memory locations and behave as expected again.
BTW... both physical hard drives as well as solid-state memory both have bad blocks or bad memory addresses even when brand new.  But the formatting process is supposed to identify and mark those locations -- using alternate locations instead.

  • Canon 5D3 Feature Request / Wish -- Manual exposure auto shutter speed toggle

I've been using Canon gear the last six years & I don't know if this is currently possible in any camera body. If not, I believe it would prove highly helpful for working professionals.
When working in time-sensitive situations, I find myself frequently forced to use Av mode when I would prefer to remain in Manual exposure. Additionally, I find myself slowed down within Manual exposure mode when moving between inddor and outdoor light and/or other situations of dramatic ambient light fluctuation.
My wish would be for a menu assignment function for the "multi-function" button (next to the shutter release). Pressing the button while in M exposure mode would then set the shutter speed (like in Av mode--and another option could emulate Tv mode), and releasing the button would resume normal M exposure mode usage.
Personally, this is my biggest wish for the 5D3, and I would LOVE to see it implemented. (My second wish would be for the flash exposure lock to set the exposure of Flashes which are otherwise set to manual flash exposure, but that's another story).
    Thanks,
    Bert

    Nope. That's a 1D X feature.

  • Cannot see Canon 5d thumbnails / miniatures in Bridge CS5

I have Canon 5d mrk II, CS5 and Camera Raw 5.7
I can process photos in Photoshop CS5 by clicking in Bridge, but I cannot see thumbnails / miniatures in Bridge, only icons ...

I tried Tools, cache, empty cache - failed.
I tried to download camera raw 6,2, install, couldn't install.
Then I tried Bridge, Help, update, and got the error message: Another instance of updater is running.

  • Canon 5dm3 thumbnails perfect browser image dark

i've got aperture 3.3.2, i've used aperture for 4 years. old camera was canon 5d, but got the canon 5dm3-shooting raw. Images look fine on the camera & as a thumbnail in aperture, once i click on the thumbnail & image goes to the browser screen, it takes about 2-5 seconds to load fully & the image turns very very dark. i tried it on my desk pro & laptop, both the same, old 5d images still perfect (actually lighten slightly as they load but always have). new canon g1x photos load perfectly also in raw. i can "correct " the images
but takes major correction. Leave for europe in 3 weeks, just want to be sure new 5dm3 is infact exposing correctly. Thanks!

Highlight tone priority is the one.  Disable that.  My cameras are olders so I don't have that setting but I know that Aperture doesn't currently read this (proprietary) metadata that Canon uses.
Highlight alerts I think is the blinkies you see on the LCD for photos where there are blown-out or specular highlights.  It doesn't affect the exposure of the photos itself.

  • Canon G10 thumbnails don't work??

    Hi -
I have CS4 and have installed the latest update but the thumbnails for Canon G10 raw files do not display (ACR will open and convert them properly). All other raw files (nikon) do display thumbs.
Any one have a tip for troubleshooting this?
    thanks,
    Tom O'Connell

Have you purged the cache for the offending folder(s) through the Bridge Tools menu?
Also check the ACR forum. I seem to remember that some type(s) of files from certain Canon files are not supported (not considered true or conforming raw files)

  • Canon 5D3 + Canon 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye in AI-Servo restricted to 3fps

    Hi everyone,
when using the Canon 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye on the Canon 5D Mark III in Autofocus and AI-Servo, the camera seems to deliberately slow down its maximum frame rate to 3fps instead of its potential 6fps.
I have tested numerous lenses incl. the cheapest and slowest plastic fantastic Canon 50mm f/1.8, which all work at the camera's maximum frame rate of 6fps. Only with the 15mm fisheye, the camera seems to restrict the frame rate.
Why is that? And how can I avoid this from happening? Is this a deliberate software restriction?
On other Canon cameras the 15mm Fisheye works at full speed.
I know the old fish is not the fastest and most reliable autofocus lens in Ai-Servo but for me it works most of the time, especially for underwater sports. Even if it misses, half the time you get something super quirky!
    Cheers, Alex

I had the same issue with my 40D, 7D and 5D Mk III. There is no way around it, and it should also happen with all other Canon cameras that shoot faster than about 4 fps.  You probably just didn't notice it.
The slowdown in AI Servo is caused by Arc Form Drive AF lenses that autofocus and stop down the diaphragm sequentially rather than simultaneously. Newer lenses are designed to do this simultaneously and will give you the full 6 fps in AI Servo.
Chuck Westfall describes it here:    Chuck Westfall - Digital Journalist (scroll down to the comments section)
    Chuck Westfall  −
Except for the EF80-200mm f/2.8L and EF20-35mm f/2.8L, all other EF lenses with AFD (Arc Form Drive) focusing motors were designed in such a way that autofocusing and diaphragm operation (via the Electromagnetic Diaphragm, or EMD for short) were carried out sequentially rather than simultaneously. This has no impact on continuous sequences in One-Shot AF, because no autofocusing occurs after the initial AF lock in this mode. But in AI Servo, both the focus and the diaphragm are operated for each photo, and consequently the camera's framing rate decreases.
For what it's worth, AFD motors were phased out of the EOS system for all new lenses introduced from 1990 onwards.
    Best Regards--Chuck Westfall

  • Fuji xt1 vs. Canon 5d3 Adobe Standard profiles

I was checking out the 5d3 vs. X-t1 sensor using the RAW files on dpreview and at high ISO (6400 I tested) the colour charts of the two cameras are quite significantly different. However, at ISO200 they were much, much closer.
I understand that no two cameras will produce the same results, but I expected them to be closer. One of the red patches especially was miles out.
Adobe - is this something you're aware of? Is it something you can take another look at? I'm looking to introduce a Fuji element to my wedding kit and I could really do with the colours coming out of LR to be closer than they look like they'll be with the Beta of ACR 8.4..... and I thought that was the idea with "Adobe Standard"?

    PhilD11 wrote:
it looks like a difference under tungsten light and nothing to do with ISO (which I suppose makes sense)..
I agree Phil - intra-model sensor variations should really be very minor, and the role of Adobe Standard is to normalize inter-model variations to a common standard. And, I think you nailed the most common reason for discrepancies is typically white-balance.
If you are finding excessive variance even after (manually) adjusting white balance (do not rely on w.b. presets), then such should be reported to Adobe as a bug.

  • Canon 5D3 Transcoded Files Blacked Out in Browser

Hello. I am working with FCPX 10.1.4, OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.
I imported my Canon 5D MKIII .MOV files into FCPX and had them transcoded to Optimized/Proxy files. The length of each clip is fairly long so I stepped away.
When I came back, my files are blacked out in the Browser and when I drag them to use into my timeline they are also blacked out.
I've tried trashing the preferences and restarting my Mac and FCPX but can't seem to figure this out.
    How can I fix this?

Embed all your video/audio as Flash content, which isn't terribly easy as it requires *hand-coding javascript* elements.
    No, it doesn't : [flash video|http://www.wyodor.net/MoreEmbed/flashvideo.html]
Besides that, copy/paste isn't all that difficult.
Lots of Flash video players [here|http://www.wyodor.net/iFrame>.
And here are tutorials that explain how to embed such movies, or other HTML code, in an iWeb page.
