Canon EOS 6D - Unsupported Image Format

Hi,
when I import RAW pictures from my Canon EOS 6D to the library, Aperture shows me this message: "Unsupported Image Format".
I updated Aperture to the last available version (3.4.3 - Digital Camera Raw 4.00 - Build 658.1) but nothing changes.
Any ideas?

Canon G7x and unsupported image format icon with RAW files.

When RAW files downloaded from Canon G7x get "Unsupported Image Format" message. Using iMac with 10.9.5 and Aperture 3.5.1. This is a new camera and is not on the supported list. Is there a way around this? Now that Aperture is static will new cameras continue to be added to supported list?

The only way 'around' it is to upgrade to the required Aperture and/or OS version. So you will need to wait for that to happen. In the meantime you could shoot Raw+JPG, use the JPGs now and when (and if) the camera is supported (or you move to a different program) you will have the Raw files.
As for camera updates in Aperture, no one here can say what Apple intends, we;re just users here like yourself and even discussing this is technically against the TOU of these forums.
But I think it is safe to assume, as Apple will continue to support Raw processing and that the Raw processing is done at the OS level and they have said they will support Aperture at least through Yosemite's life cycle that any new Raw format added to OS X will reusable by Aperture. But that's only a guess.

Canon 10D RAW - Unsupported Image Format??

I have a folder of 66 Canon 10D RAW (.CRW and .THM) images. After importing to Aperture 1.5 I get 'Unsupported Image Format' for 29 of the images. If I try and open one of these images from the Finder in preview I also get a 'Cannot open' message.
Strange thing is iView Media Pro, RAW Developer, Canon DPP, Phase One C1, Photoshop CS2 and LightZone can all open and view these files! Only Aperture/OSX (Preview) is having the problem.
Any ideas how to 'recover' these images to Aperture?

You are indeed correct .... shame on me for not reading your post carefully.
Since you have .THM files, are you pulling the images into Canon's ImageBrowser or DP Professional before Aperture vs. importing direct to Aperture? The reason I ask is that iPhoto, Preview and Aperture all failing to read the same image is clearly systemic not application specific. It points to some level of corruption - - - as far as OS X is concerned - - - of the image and is obviously not application centric, save where the application calls on the OS support systems.
Is it possible for you to generate .DNG's for the "Unsupported" images and try importing these? It may be the CRW wrapper that is somehow unreadable at a myopically detailed level that other imaging tools blythly (and perhapds more appropriately) ignore. The DNG wrapper may allow the RAW content to be then read by Aperture.

Canon G9 Raw - "Unsupported Image Format"

I am using Aperture 1.5.6. When I went to import in Aperture RAW images from my new G9, the appear as "Unsupported Image Format." I do not have this problem when importing from my Nikon D2sx. Any suggestions??

Rather annoyingly, you're right. While everyone has been criticising how RAW support is in the OS, Apple seems to have taken this a step further and included G9 support in the OS, but not in a way that Aperture 1.5.6 can use. On the page:

they have asterisks beside a variety of new additions which require 10.5.2 (or 10.4.11) and Aperture 2. I've run the additional Leopard graphics update, reimported the G9 RAWs and this changes nothing in 1.5.6. A trial copy of Aperture 2 on another machine has no problems.
I guess this means that Aperture 1.5.6 users are no longer supported for newer cameras (including ones which have been out for some time).

Canon EOS 350D .CR2 pics still 'unsupported image format'?

I was releaved to see updates in Mac OS X (10.4.8) and Aperture 1.5 the other week, hoping it would solve my problem, being able to finally work with my RAW files (.cr2) from the Canon EOS 350D (yes, being in Europe these days).
I followed the posts on the forum throughout the summer, which recommended waiting for the next OS X update (which should support the camera in that raw definition file) and I didn't want to use the workaround, which clearly had problems with the colors on the pics.
After all the updates the other week, nothing has changed on my MBP. Still the 'Unsupported Image Format' on my RAW files. On the other hand, I don't see any posts on problems with the 350D camera anymore as well (only on CR2 files in general).
Am I missing something really basic here (tried rebuild library)? Or, have all the CR2 formats gone down the drain on Aperture 1.5?
Any help is appreciated, as I have already looked into Adobe Lightroom Beta and although I don't want to switch, the files seem to work there...

Yes, the import thumbnail is as you describe, the low res. JPG that is embedded in the RAW wrapper.
10.4.8 needs to be installed prior to Aperture 1.5 .... from a functionality point of view. I am not aware of a dependence that says AP 1.5 has to be uninstalled before a 10.4.8 upgrade or any such, not that AP 1.5 should need re-installing after a 10.4.8 upgrade .... assuming it was working correctly beforehand.
But to this last point, since you have an issue which may be related to AP or OS X, it is likely worthwhile updating both and in order.
Final thought. do you import directly from the CF card / camera vs. using an intermediary tool such as ImageBrowser or DP Professional? I am wondering if Aperture is very OCD aboout the image format wrapper and chokes at the least excuse that other apps. and tools ignore.

You mention that 'most' of your files are DNG. Try
running the effected files through Adobe DNG
converter again and then import your reprocessed
files to Aperture and see if the problem persists.
I had a problem with a batch of D2x files converted
to DNG which had been metadata tagged by
PhotoMechanic (the evil app).

Are you getting any of the embedded XMP metadata
coming into Aperture during the import process?
Already tried that multiple times...no luck. I'm wondering though if it might be related to metadata as you suggest. I'm still trying different things to see what happens.
I was able to alleviate the problem on one set of images by painstakingly searching my external drive for the oldest backups I could find - CR2 files from before DNG conversion. I then ran those through DNG Converter and tried importing them again (this time, I embedded NO thumbnail, but I'm not sure if that made the difference - I think it was more likely a fluke in the original conversion that caused the problem). This time, it worked.
Now, the big problem is that I still have a couple hundred images for which I can't seem to locate the original CR2 files. I don't typically keep them after conversion, as I don't have the space for both.

10.5.2; Canon 1DsM3 Raw Files = "Unsupported Image Format" in Aperture

Just did the update and pointed Aperture to a folder of Canon 1Ds Mark III raw files (standard raw files, no sRaw or anything like that). Thumbnail previews are grey and Viewer says, "Unsupported Image Format".
Tried rebooting and verifying/fixing permissions. No help. No thumbnails, no images in Aperture.
Canon 1Ds Mark III raw files do show fine in the finder and in Quick Look.

I have the same exact issue.
I do get the same error with 1Ds MIII raws.
Also the G9 raws are not working.
Finally after 3 months it's still not working
I could imagine that there is the need to edit some property file (like I have read before in the forum somewere) to add the new cameras to the list of supported cameras.
Are the D3, D300 raws working?

Unsupported Image Format when inporting from my new Canon 400D (KISS X) CAM

Could someone please tell me why Apeture is giving me the Unsupported Image Format notice when trying to view and import Raw images from my new Canon 400D camera? I can view the photos on my Canon software. Is it possible that just becase the file is 10.1 MP on my new cam instead of the 8mp that my rebel XT (350D) was that Apeture can not use the format? If in fact this is the case, what can i do to get the 300 plus photos that I just shot at a paid photo shoot into Apertue and still be able to work with them raw?
I would be grateful for any help I can get.

Two problems with this workflow:
1) A 16 bit TIFF file is 52 megabytes. Ouch. Reading them bogs down my little MacBook like you wouldn't believe. I may have to work with JPEG or, god forbid, use Photoshop until Apple's devs can get support for the XTi
2) Aperture seems unable to figure out the colour balance of the TIFF files. I added a bit of saturation and colour correction (working in the Adobe RGB space) in Canon DPP, but Aperture seems to totally screw up on these files. http://images.dasmegabyte.org/wine_tour/large-37.html almost no detail at all in those bins (plenty in the RAW) and I had to boost the gamma on the web gallery by 1.2x so they didn't look fire engine red.

Canon 7D, .CR2 and the miserable RED "Unsupported Image Format" screen

I have seen a lot of posts on this:
First, yes, all of my software is up to date ~ running Mac OS X SL 10.6.2 and Aperture 2.1.4
I just got the 7D ~ my system is set up to automatically open Aperture when card reader and/or camera is plugged in.
I have been shooting in Camera Raw, not sCR2, not mCR2, just .CR2 and large JPG simultaneously.
Obviously, the JPG imports fine, but that dastardly "Unsupported Image Format" red screen pops up.
I can't seem to find the file to open and see if it works in iPhoto ~ even when I am in iPhoto and try to show my Aperture library, it is not there.
So, the big question is this: how do I download .CR2, find them to then convert them (and what am I converting them to?) and import those converted files into Aperture?
I know, I know a lot of questions...but am appreciative of any help someone is willing to throw my way.

I mount the drive to see it in the finder only.
I shoot both RAW & Jpeg the same time.
I explore the Jpeg thumbnails, skipping over the raw files which takes a little longer to load.
One main advantage doing both/
Now anyone can load the Jpegs to view, otherwise they may not have viewer or software to see RAW files.
For safety, I load the whole card file to the desktop.
From here, I pre-sort the images to a folder within.
Otherwise it's back & forth reloading the whole card file into Aperture picking out a few, and doing the process 10 - 20 more times for other images not related.
Or making mistakes along the way. A simple slip of the wrist, or happy mouse.
Now any software you chose, It can load from saved file on desktop.
**The card anytime it's put back in camera gets reformatted.
Or set aside for safe keeping until the process is complete in case of power failure and or crash.
Reformatting the card is a must in the camera vs just deleted at computer.
This might be the X crisis you see of old data mixed in.
Other Issues/
By default for years, compact flash cards & reader.
On the Canon 1DsMkII, it has two slots, CF & SD.
Along comes SDHC, and off to do wedding, get back to computer to load from reader and the computer says, we have no clue.
Card readers are specific to SDHC.
I had a thumb drive reader for SDHC but never gave it a thought there was any difference.
Prior/
The camera smarter, picked the SD slot to record to if pulling & replacing CF.
So I was shocked not finding the images on CF at first.

Unsupported Image Format? CR2 from Canon 20d

ok, so my jpg's import fine. my problem is with my CR2 Raw pictures from my Canon 20d. I tried to import some. They import, all the metadata info is there, but there is no thumbnail in aperture and in the top viewer it says unsupported image format. Has anyone had this problem? After import why are the CR2 thumbnails missing and why do the viewers say Unsupported Image Format? Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Since I can't open the problem RAW files in Preview or import them into iPhoto, but can open them in ACR/Bridge or DPP, I'm fairly certain this has something to do with the underlying RAW support at the OS-level in Tiger -- and not just an Aperture issue.
I have had no problem with some older RAW files captured using my 20D. I think I may have upgraded the 20D's firmware since those images were shot -- could it be an incompatibility brought on by that?!?!

Unsupported image format Canon G2 CRW

I downloaded the trial to see if Aperture is something I would like to use. I have an old Canon PowerShot G2 and I shoot in RAW. The file type is CRW. After making a new project I select Import and import the CRW files into the Aperture library but it will only show the thumbnail on the bottom frame but will display a red box with Unsupported Image Format where the picture should be for me to edit.
Is the Canon RAW format not supported by Aperture? If it is how do I go about using CRW files in Aperture?

It does and I tried that but that just puts to many steps into my workflow. With this it becomes
Open Bridge, find the photo open in Ps to use the Raw importer, click save as and save as a DNG. Then open up Aperture and import there and edit. At that point of using the Raw importer I might as well do the work there and in Ps.
Maybe Apple will see it that they should support the older cameras, who knows. At least with Adobe they support back to the PowerShot G1.

Well, I must be doing something wrong. Ik can see the thumbnails, but once imported I always get 'Unsupported Image Format'.... This is what most aften see in Aperture. I must be overlooking things....

Intermittent "Unsupported image format" message with either CR2 or DNG

I am seeing "Unsupported image format" messages once files created by a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark iii (+stored in Canon's CR2 file format or when the same file is converted to Adobe's DNG file format+) have been imported into Aperture.
Some files will import and be viewable. However, most of the time the files are not viewable. This occurs even after updating Aperture to 1.5.6.
Is anyone else seeing problems with CR2 or DNG files created by Canon EOS 1Ds Mark iii?
Has anyone see a solution?

I think Support is confused with the Canon camera models.
10.5.1 supports 1D Mk III, but only 1Ds Mk II.

I don't believe that 10.4.11 supports anything that 10.5.1 doesn't support. In fact, the docs at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306297 say "Adds RAW image decoding support for the following cameras: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50, Leica V-Lux 1, Olympus E-400, Olympus EVOLT E410, Olympus EVOLT E510, Canon EOS 40D" (the 1D Mk III came in the 10.4.10 update.)

Aperture 3.5 cr2 unsupported image format

upgraded to aperature 3.5 and os x 10.9 , when download raw files from my canon eos 1000d I can see the thumbnails but cannot edit the raw files , all that happens is that I gar a gray screen with the following unsupported image format - the raw format is an cr2 extension --can anyone help -thanks

Nik just released an update...hopefully for Mavericks support. It appears to be fixing some of the forum user's issues so far.

B&W - Unsupported Image Format

Aperture continues to misbehave. I scan B&W photos in using VueScan software and a Canon flatbed scanner, import them into Aperture 3.1.1, clean up the photos and sometimes even am allowed to upload to SmugMug and THEN I get the Unsupported Image Format screen and can't do a bloody thing to my photos nor can I even bring them back. This doesn't pass a test of reasonableness.
Anybody have a workaround? This only happens with B&W photos.

Though the following refers to iPhoto, could Aperture have a similar issue as well? When scanning B&W negatives, photos and, documents, then attempting to bring them into iPhoto I had the same issue. iPhoto returned "Unsupported Image Format" or, they appeared as a rectangle filled with black the shape of the imported item. Those scanned items were saved as JPG files.
Opened them in Photoshop Elements (PSE) I could see them. In PSE I found the item's Mode was Grayscale. Changing Mode > Grayscale to Mode > RGB, saving it iPhoto imported it as it should; life is good.
Even though the files were B&W images iPhoto wanted the files formatted as RGB. Now when I scan I do check the Mode making sure the file is in RGB even though the image is grayscale.
