Canon Vixia HFM40 video quality issues in Premiere Elements 10

Hi,
I am trying to edit video from a Canon Vixia HFM40 camcorder in Adobe Premiere Elements 10 on a Mac, but the video playback and the exported video has quality issues.  Playback is not smooth when there is a lot of movement in the picture.  It looks similar to interlacing issues, but there are no horizontal lines when the video is paused.  Any ideas on how to solve that would be be much appreciated.
Here are the specs:
Video Format (Canon's XFP mode):
- AVCDH MPEG-4 AVC/H.264
- Resolution: 1,920 x 1080
- Bitrate: 17 Mbps
- Frame rate: 60i or 30p (problem occurs in both instances)
- File extension: MTS
Workstation:
- Fall 2010 27" iMac, quad core 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7
- Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2
- 12 GB RAM
-  Adobe Premiere Elements 10.0
Project Preset: AVCHD Full HD 1080i 30 (several other presets had the same result).
Thanks.
Ralph

OK, I've been doing some more research and I think I found the problem.  The choppy picture is due to Premiere Elements and VLCs inability to properly de-interlace the 60i video.  It gets played back in 30p, which does not create horizontal lines, but it is a lot more choppy than the native 60i, especially when there is a lot of movement in the picture.
I verified this theory by installing the latest VLC beta (from http://nightlies.videolan.org/) and playing back my source MTS file with De-Interlacing set to "On" and De-Interlacing Mode set to "yadif (2x)".  Those settings did not work with the current official relase of VLC (1.1.12).  The 1.2 VLC beta is not fully functional yet and I am not getting consistent results, but when I play that video several times, then after about 3 or 4 tries it plays back perfectly smooth, just like it is when playing back the native file from the camcorder connected to the HDTV via HDMI.
That also works with video exported from Premiere Elements 10 with preset AVCHD M2T - H264 1920 x 1080i 30.
The video is still choppy when played back in Premiere, but that does not really matter, since the output file produced by Premiere can be played back with VLC (assuming that the final build of VLC 1.2 can handle the files correctly).
-> Hunt: thank you again for your help.

  • Video clips from Canon camcorder have wrong aspect ratio in Premiere Elements 11

I recently purchased Adobe Premiere Elements 11 and I'm having trouble importing clips from my Canon FS300 camcorder. The camcorder records widescreen video at 720 x 480 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio (presumably using non-square pixels) The clips play correctly in Windows Media Player, VLC, Real Player and several other players.  They do not display correctly in Quicktime or when imported into PE11, showing a 4:3 frame.  I have tried just about every New Project setting in PE11, but the closest result I can achieve is a 4:3 picture in a 16:9 frame. If I run the clips through the VLC Convert utility and output them using the Video - MPEG-2 + MPGA (TS) codec, the resulting clips import and play correctly in PE11. Is there some obscure setting I need to implement when importing these clips, or is PE11 just incapable of recognising file formats which seem to be no problem for most video players. I assume I have the necessary codecs installed, as the clips play correctly in other players.

Thank you for your findings and comments on this matter of the handling of .the mod widescreen by Premiere Elements. One continues to learn whether they be a beginning, intermediate, or advanced user of Premiere Elements. That is the rewarding part of this type of discussion.
I appreciated the manner in which you introduced the subject, stated the problem, gave your findings, and made your conclusions. I was particularly interested in the list of can do video editors. You need to go with what works for you.
After your previous post and that of SG, I went searching for a .mod widescreen online to experiment with in Premiere Elements 11. I could not find one at the moment. But then I remembered that someone had sent me a sample for troubleshooting a few years back. I found it finally. The results are presented for interest value and hopefully not to stir up controversy.
    a. .mod to .mpg had no affect on the 16:9 issue in Premiere Elements 11...expected.
    b. taking the .mod widescreen into Premiere Elements 11 via the Video Importer had no affect on the 16:9 issue in Premiere Elements 11...expected.
so far we seem to be in agreement in our findings.
The only video editor that I have of the 4 that you mentioned that worked in this regard was Windows Live Movie Maker. Windows Live Movie Maker  came with my Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit computer so I took a look at the problem in that program. When I tried to import the .mod widescreen into that program via its Add Videos and Photos, it shutdown the program (.mod or .mpg file extenstion). Yet, when I imported that same file into Premiere Elements 11 on the same computer as Windows Live Movie Maker, it opened with no problem, but with the 16:9 issue that I could correct with the Interpret Footage feature.
True, that was a sampling of one .mod widescreen file. But the statement of the comparsion was unexpected. Based on that, if you had not planned to, please consider the tryout of your next video editor for use with the .mod widescreen to avoid unexpected results which will delay you moving forward with your video projects.
Success with your video editing projects whatever you decision,

  • Did Apple fix the video quality issue in iMovie '09?

I am a casual video editor and iMovie 08 had the perfect user experience / functionality for what I want to do.
However, the known video quality issue (throwing away interlaced scan lines) made the result unacceptable since I archive our family video on DVDs. I have been forced to use iMovie HD for that reason. I have tried tricks such as converting the original DV files to AIF and deinterlace prior to import into iMovie08 but that did not seem to work either.
So does anyone know if Apple fixed the video quality issue in iMovie '09.
MESSAGE TO APPLE IF YOU ARE LISTENING:
Please fix the video quality in iMovie09 if not already. Yes, the quality is ok for YouTube or Internet video but for those of us who want simple editing to archive our family video we cannot accept poor video quality. Dropping an interlace field effectively halves the vertical resolution. Thank you.

Please explain this in more detail when you say Adaptive Deinterlacer. Are you talking about another program? If so, what program and what are the specific steps.
Also, sounds like you are recommending imovie09. By saying to do the above, are you saying imovie09 still causes you too loose significant quality like imovie08? Are you saying you can use imovie08 or imovie09 with these steps to get high quality video or just imovie09? I guess I just need more specifics on how you do what you are describing and how imovie09 fits into this versus imovie08. I joined this whole discussion trying to figure out if upgrading imovie09 made a difference regarding the whole quality issue. I know it has more features, but I am more concerned about he quality of the video right now. Thanks.

  • Can a video created with Adobe Premiere Elements 13 be converted to run on Adobe Premiere Elements 11?

Can a video created with Adobe Premiere Elements 13 be converted to run (and be edited, etc.) on Adobe Premiere Elements 11?
I have several hours invested in a video creation that I made with Premiere Elements 13, but now 13 is refusing to work properly (space bar and play button do not move the time line indicator forward).  Hopefully, I will get the problem solved, but in the meantime I must get this project completed and don't have time to start over.  So, I need to convert the work so that it can be completed with Premiere 11 which seems to work fine.
    Thanks, Dave

    Dave
Is this an outdated thread? I thought that you had resolved the play button/space bar issue.
Classically, you cannot open a project created in a later version in an earlier version. If you try, you get hit with "The project appears to be damaged, it cannot be opened." messaged. There was one rare and little known occasion when that was not the case. It involved Premiere Elements 10. So, that is not going to help us any here.
If you still have the play button/space bar issue, can you get out of the 13 project by exporting it to file which you can import into a new Premiere Elements 11 project? If need be, I can suggest the details of that if you tell me the project setting for the 13 project.
Please let us know the situation at this time.
    Thank you.

  • I need HELP with exporting videos with PIP from Premiere Elements 11 to YouTube please?

When I am editing and rendering videos that have picture-in-picture using Premiere Elements 11, the videos (once they've been uploaded to YouTube) have these thick black margins above and below the picture-in-picture images/videos. These margins are not visible when the videos are viewed using Premiere Elements but then they appear when the video is on YouTube. How can I prevent this? Is this a format issue? Thanks.

    Welcome to the forum.
Can you tell us exactly how you created your PiP, please?
Knowing the specs. of both your background Video (and your Project Settings), plus the specs. of the Video used in the PiP, will likely be useful.
Also, seeing a screen-cap of your Timeline, at the point of the PiP, might be useful too.
    Good luck,

  • Freeze issue in Premiere Elements 3

    Hi,
We are trying to solve an issue with Premiere Elements 3 for a customer.
Yes, I know it a very old version, but it is just a home user & it has been working fine for him.  He last used it several months ago with the same hardware & all worked fine.
Now when he goes to use it again it basically freezes up.  If you turn the camera on it pops up asking the application to use.  If you select Premiere Elements it opens up the window with "capture device offline" & doesn't seem to respond to any mouse clicks.   If you go to task manager & end the task (often get a message Premiere is not responding), go into Windows Movie Maker this works fine - you can even control the camera (start, stop, etc).
If you start Premiere with the camera turned off you can seem to navigate around menus, etc no problem (until you turn the camer on & try to capture).
Consequently I assume that the hardware is OK.  Because Premiere Elements worked before I presume that maybe an update or some new application is stopping it from working, but I'm not sure what it is.
Here is a summary of the system specs:
    Win XP Home SP2
    Premiere Elements V3.0
Sony DCR-HC96  (also tried their old Sony DCR-TRV355E but this gives the same symptoms)
    Firewire (onboard Asus P5N-E motherboard)
Any thoughts would be greatly appeciated.
    Gary.
    Perth, Australia.

    Hi Bill,
    Thanks for your assistance.
I tried all of the items you mentioned, but it still gives the same result.
Interestingly once it freezes if I go to task manager & End Program (the only way to close it) I can go straight to Windows Movie Maker & it works perfectly - I can even control the play, stop, etc.
Whilst this sort of proves it isn't hardware, I had a spare firewire card so I disabled the onboard card & put in the new card - but the problem is still the same.
The next thing I have tried is to install the trial of Premiere Elements 9 (the customer is happy to buy this if it solves the problem), but the symptoms are basically the same.  With the camera turned off, the software seems to work well & I can go in & out of all the menus.  Once I turn the camera on, the device appears in the pull down list (something like MS DV ...) but none of the buttons (eg play, etc) work & it sort of freezes up & task manager says its not responding.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Gary.

  • Canon Vixia hfm31 videos (MTS) won't import into Premiere Pro CS5

I have a lot of footage on a Canon Vixia HFM31 HD Camcorder. Yesterday I tried to import into Premiere and got an error message saying the MTS format was not supported.
The clips DID import with iMovie.
Do I need to purchase a converter from a 3rd party vendor to be able to get MTS footage from the Vixia into Premiere. Seems strange that it worked so seamlessly with iMovie.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Deanna

When you open the New Sequence dialog, does it look like this:
...or do you have significantly fewer presets available? If you have less, your installation has been reverted to trial mode--this is a problem that occurs after updating Premiere. If so, the only way to get back to full operating status is to reinstall the software.
Specifically, what you need to do is:
Deactivate your installation (Help > Deactivate)
    Uninstall Premiere/Production Premium/Master Collection. Reboot.
Download and run the Adobe CS5 Clean Tool. Reboot.
Repeat step 3 at least once more, preferably two or three more times
Reinstall and reactivate Premiere, and then update
It's a pain, indeed, but it's the only way to get back up and running.
If, however, you do have all the presets, give us some more detail on the files and how you're trying to import them.

  • Canon Powershot sx50 video quality problems

I'm relatively new at working with video editing. I use Adobe Premiere Elements 9, and when I record with my Canon Powershot sx50 HS I get fuzz or fog when playing it on my computer. It's odd because when I put the video on my Samsung S4 and convert it into MP4 format the quality looks way better than on my computer. If I could get someone's email also I can hit up about general questions that would be awsome. I basically want to get the best quality out of the camera as possible. My lighting in my room is good so I don't understand why I get fog on my computer but not on my phone. As for my settings I use the DSLR-1080p DSLR-1080p24 then MPEG - Preset H.264 1920X1080i 30 which is Widescreen 16:9 Profile: High - Level: 4.0 - VBR,1 Pass Target Bitrate 20 Mbps Max Bitrate 21 Mbps Framerate 29.97 fps I'm wondering if my settings are wrong? What are the best Premiere Elements settings for a Cannon sx50?

I found a solution that works for me and since there are no other suggestions I'll pass it along in case others have this same problem.  What I ended up doing is installing CineForm and using it to convert AVCHD to HD.  It handles the 24p inside a 60i container issue and the converted files, when imported into PP CS4, look perfect.  The only drawback is that CineForm is not freeware but the price was more than worth the aggrevation it eliminated.

  • Canon HV20 import/video quality

Don't flame me please, I did some searching but didn't find too much... here's my question/problem:
I have a Canon HV20 Mini/DV camcorder, and I connect it directly to my MacBook Pro by FireWire. iMovie finds the camcorder and imports my video. I then create a project, throw it over to iDVD, then create a DVD.
The process runs fine, I get no errors, but what I do find is the video quality degrades quite a bit. If I connect the camcorder directly to my TV via HDMI, the video looks awesome. The DVD looks junky.
I import the video from my camcorder in the "large" size, and do the media share at the largest size. Is there something I'm missing here??? I'm new to iMovie, and have a LOT of DV tapes to import.
    Thanks in advance....
    Ken

In working on an update to my DV workflow, I too found the when iDVD burned discs were played on an ordinary DVD player into an ordinary TV -- the results were VERY good.
HDTVs reveal all the MPEG-2 crap iDVD seems to add to SD video even when you use the "pro" setting. So the old rule -- the maximum size TV to view NTSC is about 27" seems very appropriate. Even when the source is HD.
Another issue is the quality of the DVD players up-converter.

  • Video editing & playback issues: Adobe Premiere Elements 8

    Hello all,
I have made several attempts at transfering HD video  files from my camcorder to my PC and then editing.
When I try to play the transferred file, it is a little choppy and then gets worse as I edit it.
    Here are my specs/config:
    System:
    HP Pavilion a6720y
    Windows Vista 64 bit
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 440
AMD Phenon 9550 Quad Core 2.2Ghz
    6GB RAM
    640GB SATA drive, 7200 rpm
    Camera:
    Sony HDR-XR150
    Editing Software:
    Adobe Premiere Elements 8
I copy the video files from the camcorder to the computer via USB 2.0.
When I connect the camera directly to the TV the video plays without any issues.  So I know the AVCHD files are "good" and I suspect they are also possibly "good" on my hard drive, but just cannot be played or edited appropriately for some reason.
One input I received was that due to the nature of AVCHD files, I should convert the video to "I-frame codec" and then edit.  Can Adobe Premiere Elements do this?
    Any other thoughts/ideas?
    Thanks for any help.

    6GB RAM

My 3 hard drives are configured as...
    1 - 320Gig Boot for Win7 64bit Pro and all program installs
2 - 320Gig data for Win7 swap file and video project files
When I create a project on #2 drive, the various work files follow,
so my boot drive is not used for the media cache folder and files

Trying to use only ONE Hard Drive for Video Editing
You are a music conductor, with a baton that you use to point to various parts of the orchestra... this is like Windows pointing to various parts of the hard drive to do Windows housekeeping or to load program segments for various functions
Now, at the same time and with the same hand... while still using the baton to conduct the orchestra... pick up a bow and play a fiddle... this would be doing something with your video file at the same time as all the other work
You as a person cannot do both at the same time with the same hand
A computer is a LITTLE better, in that it can switch from one kind of task to another very quickly... but not quickly enough for EASY video editing
You need AT LEAST two hard drives (separate drives, never a partition http://forums.adobe.com/thread/650708 for more) with Windows (or Mac OS) and software on your boot drive, and video files on a 2nd drive so the boot drive is not slowed down by trying to do everything
I find that the three drives I use work very well for me, for editing AVCHD video... some people use a 4th drive, so video INPUT files are on drive three and all OUTPUT files are on drive four... I only bought a mid-tower case instead of a full tower case (my bad... but had to fit in the space available on my office desk!) so I use the three drives that will fit
Depending on your exact hardware (motherboard brand & model AND USB2 enclosure brand & model AND external hard drive brand & model) AND the type of video file, you may... or may NOT... be able to use an external USB2 hard drive for SD (Standard Definition) video editing
Steve Grisetti in the Premiere Elements forum http://forums.adobe.com/thread/856208 and Jim Simon in the Premiere Pro forum http://forums.adobe.com/thread/856433 use USB externals for editing
A USB3 hard drive connected to a motherboard with USB3 is supposed to be fast enough for video editing (I don't have such, so don't know) but eSata DOES have a fast enough data transfer for video editing... I have not used the eSata Dock below... for reference only, YMMV and all the usual disclaimers

  • Export DV Video Quality issue

I have a HDV project that looks great on the screen and when exported to DVD using quicktime, but the client needs it on DV tape. I'm exporting using Print to Tape via firewire to my Sony FX-1 camera using DV settings, but the video quality is awful. A moving logo that looks great on the screen is pixillated and shots that look good of computer screens are unreadable on the tape. Any specific suggestions for video output settings, rendering options, etc. would be most appreciated. Oh, and I am also trying to export the 16 x 9 video as optimized for 4 x 3: could that be part of my problem?
    Thanks.

OK, help me out here: I don't want to pretend to know something I don't: This is a 30 second spot going to the Virginia PBS stations for the state Dept. of Education, which is my employer. The caption house the DOE uses will be putting the spot on Beta SP, as that is the format the stations want it in. I'm just trying to get it onto tape so that it looks as good as it does on my screen. I don't really know what anamorphic means, and I'm just getting started using Compressor. I've gotten to the point where the pixellation that was happening before is gone, but I'd like the spots to retain the 16x9 look I shot them in, so I was thinking letterboxing.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, and the more detailed the instructions when using compressor the better. When I worked at a station there were other folks who helped me with this kind of thing, and I'm hoping to get a setting that works, create a profile for it, and move on.
Thanks to those of you who are being patient with me.

Watching video's from Youtube is frustrating on the Primary wireless.
QoS for Primary is set to Silver

I als have a Guest network, that uses a seperate Cable WAN link. Traffic does not currently pass thru Websense and I don't have buffering problerms.
I do get substandard video quality on this wireless network as well.
QOS for Guest is set to Bronze

What else can I look at to improve the Video quality of y wireless networks?

Simple answer is to implement QoS in your wireless for voice/video.
There are lots of work to do. Refer this design document as a guide.

  • How do I sharpen video from DSLR in Premiere Elements 11?

I've been using PE11 for some time now. Mostly for home videos and a youtube channel. Up until this point I have used a Canon Vixia HF M-50 which was great. I had to do very little adjusting the picture in post for what I needed. But I just recieved a Canon 7D with a couple good lenses and I will be selling the Vixia. I know the 7D has the capability to take much better video and I am getting better at the manual settings. Most tutorials out there say to have your settings with the sharpness and contrast turned all the way down and adjust in post. The sharpen "effect" doesn't really do much and my footage from the vixia looks much sharper. Any help out there for a newb? Or am I going to have to upgrade my computer and software to keep up with the new equipment?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

    Hi Steve,
    Thanks for getting back
I used a Samsung SMX-F40BP/XEU "Handycam" recording from the the image projected on to a screen. This produced mp4 video files on an SD Card, H.264/AVC Format with AAC Audio
I then dragged and dropped the raw video files on to the PC hard drive, and added the folder to the Adobe Organizer.
    When creating the projects I
    1)     Create a a New Project PAL Standard DV 48KHz to match the 4:3 aspect ratio of the original film
    2)     Drag the video/clip I intend to work with from the organizer window in to the work are of Adobe Premiere Elements 11.
When I was originally doing this yesterday for the first 15 clips, when added to the timeline, the video clips appeared as 1 contiguous clip as in the first image i posted.
When i went to work today I noticed that when i dragged a clip from the organiser to the work area, the video took longer to appear on the timeline, I could see the progress as it was added, with lines appearing where scenes/splits are being automatically added as in the second image I posted.
I noticed first thing that the clips were appearing in the organiser window with different icons, and in some cases I could expand the clips to see all scenes that had apparently been generated automatically. All clips in the orgnaiser now appear with the same icon, and are all expandable.
If i now create a new project and use one of the original clips that originally appeared as 1 contiguous clip on the timeline, it is now split automatically, as with the later clips.

  • Edit column issue in Premiere Elements 9

Is there an issue with the Edit Column feature in the project window of Premiere Elements 9?
When I add a Description or Comment column, changes are not saved when I close and reopen the program.
Also, I cannot write any text in these columns to describe my videos (if I click on the space for writing comments, it just opens up a window to view the video) whereas I was able to do it with version 4 and earlier.
I am using the trial version before buying and would like to know if the purchased version has this problem or not and if it can be fixed?

I could be mis-remembering, but I think that Steve Grisetti has confirmed about what you indicate. I do not know if this was some sort of change in Adobe's thinking, and they did not clean up after themselves, or if this is just a Bug, that needs to be addressed.
Personally, I would file a Bug Report, with the full details, and hope to get a fix in the works.
Also, if I am mis-remembering, I am sure that Steve G. will correct me.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
