Cant create directory in /home

When I try to create a user in /home it won't let me. It shows that it is readable and executable only. Should I change the permissions. Or do I have to put the user directories in another location.

/home is usually reserved for automounted directories.
Users "normally' reside in /export/home.

Have you just installed Arch? Is there a chance that you're not the owner of your home directory? (check "ls -l /home/" to be sure... if not, chown it)
I don't know what else it could be but someone here will surely have an idea.

  • Unable to create a user home directory ?

When I use root to create a new account, it can not create a default home directory for this user .
This problem will also cause a lot of other problems when using non-root account to login in.
    $ ssh [email protected]
    Password:
    Last login: Mon Jul 7 10:13:42 2008 from 10.250.X.X
Could not chdir to home directory /home/admin: No such file or directory
Sun Microsystems Inc. SunOS 5.10 Generic January 2005
    what's the problem ?

chances are its the automounter. check /etc/auto_master. it by default includes /home as a mount point for the automount process. if you dont need the automount for /home, comment that line out, save the file, and run automount -v (-v for verbose output). you should then be able to create dirs under /home. or, you could use a diff home dir prefix, or use the automounter (this will take some setup).

  • Why can't create file under /home directory?

I user solaris10, and login as root,I find I can't create any file or directory under /home directory! It say "operation not applicable" ,Why? I am puzzled it for a long time. Anyone could tell how to do it?
    Thanks

    For Solaris,
/home is not an on-disk file system, it is a file system under the
control of the automounter, and only the automounter can create
    directories/files in it.
If you don't want the automounter to manage /home, then remove the
    "/home" entry from /etc/auto_master
(and issue the command "automount -v" to force the file
    to be reread, or reboot).
However, the typical setup for Solaris is to locate user's home directories
    in /export/home.

  • Never - Create a portable home directory on this computer now?

I have kinda the opposite problem from normal. I have Home Directories and PHD's working fine. I think it is working as expected, with one exception...
My Daughter has an iMac at my office. I set up her account as PHD so she could also use the account from home. (We SOMETIMES go home <g>) But when I log on as her from one of the other desktops at the office, I get the dialog: "Create a portable home directory on this computer now?". I answer never. And it keeps coming up. Does Never not mean Never?

  • Oracle 10g enterprise manager create directory

    Hi,
I am new to using Oracle 10g on Linux and struggle with creating a new directory using the Enterprise Manager "wizard".
I go to Database Instance > Directory Objects > Create Directory objects
and try it with \home\oracle , then test the file system it says directory not available.
pressing OK and continueing with my data dump does not work because I get the error "The directory does not exist"
I wonder why it has not been created?
moreover how do I delete the directory objects. I cant find a delete button using the enterprise manager browser ui ?

I am trying to install software and am getting the following prompt.
"Installation Failed, the installer cant create the folder "var/folders/sq/2fzf3s_d2bzb21159nbwkb2r0000gn/T//install.3732dq0ogT.
    How do I repair this

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

Now I can't see the hard drive on my mac mini. Is it possible to reverse it or get access to the old home folder and is it possible to still use the mac mini's internal hard drive for storage? How do I find my shared folder, it was on the internal drive. I'm new to macs as you might have guessed at this debockle. Can anyone help?

I'm using Mavricks. I wanted to move my home directory to an external and went into sys prop/users/advanced options and moved the folder ok. Being a noobie on Macs I didn't copy my data and such. So my settings were all new. Basicly now I don't see the internal drive on my mini. There is a lot of strage I'm not able to access. The internal drive doesn't show up. How can I put a folder back onto it so it shows up?

From the fine SQL Reference Manual found a tahiti.oracle.com, in the prerequisites for the CREATE DIRECTORY command:
For file storage, you must also create a corresponding operating system directory, an ASM disk group, or a directory within an ASM disk group.
Your system or database administrator must ensure that the operating system directory has the correct read and write permissions for Oracle Database processes.
Privileges granted for the directory are created independently of the permissions defined for the operating system directory, and
the two may or may not correspond exactly. For example, an error occurs if sample user hr is granted READ privilege on the directory object but
the corresponding operating system directory does not have READ permission defined for Oracle Database processes.

Have you tried rebooting the iPad .... or do a hard reset - the hard rest - hold down on the sleep button and the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears - then let go of the buttons and the iPad will restart.
This wouldn't effect why the folders won't work on the PC but the folders on the iPad may work properly if you try this - no promises but you could try it.

  • View for "create directory"

    Hi
Is there a dictonary view where i can find all the "virtual directory" which are created with the "create directory" command ??
    Thanks.

    ah.. :)
So I should add, that in general those view names are "plurals" (ending with an S), e.g. dba | all | user _ objects, tables, tab_columns, indexes, synonyms, triggers, sequences, users, and so on.
(And the v$ dynamic/stats view names are often in singular, like v$metric, process, session, datafile, tablespace - but this "rule" seem to be deteriorating with new views added).
