Cant do internal forward to /WEB-INF

I've seen this problem referred to in earlier posts, but could not get a
          clear read on whether it represents "normal" behavior or a bug in Weblogic.
          I'm using Weblogic 6.1 SP1:
          I'm using the jakarta-struts-1.0.2 framework to develop a web app, and
          desire that certain JSPs not be accessible directly via the client's
          browser, but only through execution of a struts "Action". Thus, I put these
          JSPs in /<context-root/WEB-INF. Such JSPs are forwarded to via the struts
          servlet ("ActionServlet") per code similar to the following:
          RequestDispatcher rd =
          getServletContext().getRequestDispatcher("/WEB-INF/somefile.jsp");
          rd.forward(request, response);
          But I get the same 404-Not Found error as if I had targeted the JSP
          directly. My understanding of the Servlet/JSP spec is that such internal
          forwards are exempt from the WEB-INF restriction that applies to direct
          access.
          Is there a workaround for this? I'd like to have some mechanism whereby a
          given JSP can be targeted only after some initial processing by a Struts
          action.
          Thanks for any help on this ...

It's my understanding that this point in the specification was interpreted differently by BEA, such that it doesn't allow forwards or includes of content in WEB-INF. I also believe I heard that an option to control this will be introduced in the next major release.
          I've envisioned a possible workaround, although I haven't tried this. If all the JSP pages that you want to protect access to are also protected by security-constraints in your web.xml, then you can set the only role for all the JSP pages to "nobody", and then ensure that all protected JSP pages are only accessed through a forward from an action.

  • DefaultServlet bug? forwarding to static content under WEB-INF

    I've encountered what seems to be a bug in the DefaultServlet in WebServer 7.0u2, when trying to do a requestDispatch->forward to static content (e.g., a .png file) under WEB-INF. In general, I can forward into content under WEB-INF, and my servlet works fine when forwarding to dynamic content under WEB-INF (e.g., a .jsp file), but when I try to forward to static content, a 404 error is sent. The same servlet also works fine if I put the static content outside of WEB-INF. In summary:
    forwarding to /WEB-INF/foo.png responds with error 404 (even though the content exists)
    forwarding to /WEB-INF/foo.jsp works fine
    forwarding to /other-dir/foo.png works fine
    I'm baffled as to why I can't forward to static content under WEB-INF. I have a very simple web.xml file, and no suffix-based mappings, so the only servlet that should be responding to the forward is the servlet container's DefaultServlet. Is there some bug in DefaultServlet? Am I misunderstanding something?

    pl. upgrade to latest update (web server 7 u5 as of now) and see if your problem is still reproduced.

  • JSF forms inside WEB-INF

    Hi, I have a struts web-app which contains all its jsps below WEB-INF. These pages are accessible via forwards in the struts-config.xml file, e.g. xy.do forwards to /WEB-INF/pages/content/xy.jsp.
    I have added a new forwards entry to struts-config.xml that points to a jsp page containing jsf tags. e.g. myjsfform.do forwards to /WEB-INF/pages/content/myjsfform.jsp. When myjsfform.do is accessed the jsf page is correctly rendered. However, when I try to submit the form I get error 404 "The requested resource (myapp/WEB-INF/pages/content/myjsfform.faces) is not available".
    How do I get my form to successfully submit? Do I need to move it out of WEB-INF?

    bumped, now with duke dollars!

  • How can I forward to a jsp under the WEB-INF directory?

    I have a webapp with a jsp that forwards to a jsp called /WEB-INF/pages/secure.jsp When I try to forward to it, I get the error:
    "trying to GET /mywebapp/WEB-INF/pages/secure.jsp, deny-existence reports: denying existence of /web/webapps/mywebapp/WEB-INF/pages/secure.jsp"
    How can I forward to this page?
    Thanks,
    Micah

    Craig - I'm trying to do something very similar - build a waiting page into the
    flow. I've got a support case open (to get the BEA recommended approach) but so
    far have had no luck. Let me know if you've found the answer - or are still struggling.

    I am trying to get a JSP in a portlet to forward to a Webflow URL,

    The following code produces the ubiquitous "Functionality temporarily
    unavailable" message, presumably because jsp:forward chokes on the
    absolute URL:
    <c:set var="url">
    <portlet:createWebflowURL event="next"/>
    </c:set>
    <%
    // convert to a scripting variable for the jsp:forward tag
    String url = (String) pageContext.getAttribute("url");
    %>
    <jsp:forward page="<%=url%>"/>
    Using c:redirect fares little better. This code produces an empty
    portlet:
    <c:set var="url">
    <portlet:createWebflowURL event="next"/>
    </c:set>
    <c:redirect url="${url}"/>
    The closest I've been able to get is to have the user click a link to
    get to the next page, but I'd like to have an automatic forward rather
    than introduce another mouse click:
    ">
    Click to continue...</A>
    Am I missing something obvious? Any help would be appreciated...

  • Why cant I access a WEB-INF directory?

    Hi,
    I had a war file from a book that I did jar xvf on. It created a directory structure of the nature
    <TOMCAT>/ex0101/WEB-INF/etc...
    If I go to
    http://localhost:8080/ex0101it works
    If I create anotherDirectory inside ex0101, and do
    http://localhost:8080/ex0101/ANOTHER-DIRECTORYit works
    But If I do
    http://localhost:8080/ex0101/WEB-INFI get:
    HTTP Status 404 - /ex0101/WEB-INF/WHY?

    The WEB-INF directory is designated to be hidden from
    the end user. It is used for configuration files
    like web.xml, struts-config.xml, and other "utility"
    files. For security purposes, the end user is not
    allowed to browse this directory directly.oh thank you so much, I was sitting here going crazy, I looked at the directory property and it was not hidden on Windows, so I was so confused, but I guess it is hidden in Tomcat, thanks a lot, you are a truly kind man

  • Page forward from behind /WEB-INF

    Hi all,
    I've got a ADF JSF application and I want to keep most of my pages behind the /WEB-INF directory. The thinking is that I want these pages to be accessible only through component actions. So far I'm able to redirect to these *.jspx pages from outside the /WEB-INF directory. However the problem arises when I'm trying to redirect from a page inside the /WEB-INF directory to another page inside the /WEB-INF. Is there some configuration option in the web.xml or faces-config.xml file to do this? Failing which is there another option to 'hide' the URL of these pages?
    Cheers
    George

    Hi,
    according to the Servlet security spec all sources in WEB-INF are protected from direct browser access and redirects. The reason why this works for JSF navigation is because it performs a server side navigation that does not fall under this restriction. So this is not a JSF issue but a J2EE restriction

  • Access JSF Pages within WEB-INF directory

    Hi,
    I am generating a project using JHeadstart 10.1.3
    with the default setting for the UI Pages directory (/WEB-INF/page).
    This means that the generated pages are placed in the page directory
    within the WEB-INF directory.
    The generated pages use ADF Faces and the problem is that I can't
    get access to the pages in the WEB-INF directory
    When I try to deploy to OC4J standalone, the pages in the WEB-INF directory
    are not accessible.
    I read that I have to construct a index.jspx file that forwards to
    the first page (Home.jspx)
    This is my index.jspx:
    <jsp:root xmlns:jsp="http://java.sun.com/JSP/Page" version="2.0">
    <jsp:scriptlet> request.getRequestDispatcher("WEB-INF/page/Home.jspx").forward(request,response);
    </jsp:scriptlet>
    </jsp:root>
    This works, but I now have the problem of not getting a valid FacesContext:

    What is the required way of setting up the forward (and having a valid FacesContext)?

    I do something similar in my index.jspx file - but I needed to add "faces" to the url path. This will have the faces servlet process it and setup the faces context.
    Have you tried changing
    request.getRequestDispatcher("WEB-INF/page/Home.jspx").forward(request,response);to
    request.getRequestDispatcher("faces/WEB-INF/page/Home.jspx").forward(request,response);

  • Jsp-file="/WEB-INF/index.jsp" cannot load

              Hi,
              I am defining a servlet in the web.xml file using the following syntax.

              <jsp-file>/WEB-INF/index.jsp</jsp-file>
              </servlet>
              Then when I tried to access this servlet, I get a 404 not found error. The weblogic.log
              file complains with the following message:
              java.io.FileNotFoundException: no resource '/WEB-INF/index.jsp' in servlet context

              My jsp file in located in /home/dev/web/apps/MyApp/WEB-INF/index.jsp, I know weblogic
              doesn't support jsp under WEB-INF, however, according to Sun's Servlet specification,
              anything under web-inf should be accessible to getResource and getResourceAsStream
              method, and it looks like that's what weblogic implementation is using (from the
              error message). So I am not sure whether this is weblogic issue or I am doing
              something wrong. By the way, the above config in web.xml is supported in Tomcat.

              What version of WebLogic will incorporate Servlet spec 2.4 and allow jsp under
              web-inf?

  • [JHS 10.1.3] Pages in WEB-INF

    Hi,
    I am generating a project using JHeadstart 10.1.3
    with the default setting for the UI Pages directory (/WEB-INF/page)
    When I try to deploy to OC4J standalone, the pages in the WEB-INF directory
    are not accessible.
    I read that I have to construct a index.jspx file that forwards to
    the first page (Home.jspx)
    This is my index.jspx:
    <jsp:root xmlns:jsp="http://java.sun.com/JSP/Page" version="2.0">
    <jsp:scriptlet> request.getRequestDispatcher("WEB-INF/page/Home.jspx").forward(request,response);
    </jsp:scriptlet>
    </jsp:root>
    This works, but I now have the problem of not getting a valid FacesContext:
    500 Internal Server Error
    javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: Cannot find FacesContext
         at javax.faces.webapp.UIComponentTag.doStartTag(UIComponentTag.java:405)
         at com.sun.faces.taglib.jsf_core.ViewTag.doStartTag(ViewTag.java:105)
         at web2d_inf._page._Home_jspx._jspService(_Home_jspx.java:100)
         [SRC:/WEB-INF/page/Home.jspx:9]
         at com.orionserver[Oracle Containers for J2EE 10g (10.1.3.0.0) ].http.OrionHttpJspPage.service(OrionHttpJspPage.java:59)
         at oracle.jsp.runtimev2.JspPageTable.compileAndServe(JspPageTable.java:662)
         at oracle.jsp.runtimev2.JspPageTable.service(JspPageTable.java:370)
         at oracle.jsp.runtimev2.JspServlet.internalService(JspServlet.java:478)
    etc. etc.
    What is the required way of setting up the forward (and having a valid FacesContext)?

    Cliff,
    Sorry for the late reply.
    As far as I know, having JSF pages in WEB-INF is no problem, as long as you run them with /faces/ in the URL (for example: http://localhost:8988/MyProject-ViewController-context-root/faces/WEB-INF/page/Employees.jspx).
    This sounds like a JDeveloper/ADF issue or an OC4J/J2EE issue that is not related to JHeadstart. To simplify the test case, you could create a simple drag-and-drop ADF application without JHeadstart and see if the same problem occurs there. Can you please log a TAR at MetaLink ( http://metalink.oracle.com/ ), or ask this question at the JDeveloper forum at http://otn.oracle.com/discussionforums/jdev.html or the OC4J/J2EE forum at OC4J ?
    Thanks,

  • Images not loaded from WEB-INF/lib/images.jar

    The images are found in root/images/*.gif, but not
    when jarred up and placed in the lib folder. I've looked everywhere
    for a solution but all I've seen is suggestions of other places to put
    the folder, or to add it to the classpath.
    The jar is being loaded but the images are not found. Or at least the images are not showing up - the table where the main image is linked expands to the size of the image when the path is correct.
    Does anyone know the solution to this problem? I don't want to just leave them in the folder at root level, because this does not work if I set a default url pattern for the control servlet.
    Thanks,
    Greg

    GregIf your planning to make the images accessible by normal html tags - img etc, then they cant be in a jar, and they must be in a location from which the container serves content - i.e not under WEB-INF. Unless you want to write a special servlet which does nothing but read the images and feed them to the client - but I wouldnt recommend that.
    Sounds like your using Struts, and sounds like youre not using weblogic since you wouldnt be able to serve even jsps (using forward) from under WEB-INF if you were. Putting jsps under WEB-INF sounds like such a good idea when using Struts, but in practice...

  • Appc does not compile JSPs under WEB-INF

    Hi,
              We are using WLS 8.1 and I noticed that appc does not compile jsps that are
              under WEB-INF. Is this expected? If the jsps are outside of WEB-INF then
              appc works fine...
              Thanks!
              John

    Although the client is not allowed to directly access jsps under WEB-INF, it
              is perfectly acceptable (and often recommended) to use a front controller to
              forward to jsps. Often these jsps are "hidden" in the WEB-INF directory so
              that they can't be accessed directly by the client. This pattern works fine
              under 8.1 except that appc won't precompile the jsps under WEB-INF (the
              container does compile the jsps when they are called). I believe this is a
              bug... If jsps are allowed in WEB-INF then appc should compile them...

  • How to setup using WEB-INF/lib in weblogic 10.3.1

    Hello everybody:
    I check weblogic 10.3.1 in %WLS_PAHT%/modules find com.bea.core.apache.commons.lang_2.1.0.jar.
    But I want using org.apache.commons.lang.time.DateUtils.addDays(java.util.Date date, int amount).
    In server version,no this method
    So I download commons-lang 2.4 from apache,and put it in WEB-INF/lib.
    and I aslo setting this :
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <wls:weblogic-application xmlns:wls="http://xmlns.oracle.com/weblogic/weblogic-application" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee/javaee_5.xsd http://xmlns.oracle.com/weblogic/weblogic-application http://xmlns.oracle.com/weblogic/weblogic-application/1.0/weblogic-application.xsd">

    but when I run
    <body>
    <%=DateFormatUtils.format(DateUtils.addDays(new Date(),2),"yyyyMMdd HHmm")%>
    </body>
    this result :
    The method addDays(Date, int) is undefined for the type DateUtils

  • LinkageError on integratedWLS with prefer-web-inf-classes

    Hello.
    I'm currently messing with some reporting tool (BIRT) for weblogic. There's a web application example which should be deployed on application server for demonstration.
    I have no problems deploying it on standalone WebLogic on linux server (jrockit), but I can't run it on my local integratedWLS (hotspot) - there is LinkageError.
    Stalking through Interment, I found out that this thing has an issue with WebLogic. The application uses a lot of libraries and some of them are included in WebLogic but with lower versions, so there is jar collisions.
    To solve this issue there is weblogic.xml with:
    <container-descriptor>
      <prefer-web-inf-classes>true</prefer-web-inf-classes>
    </container-descriptor>
    As I said, with this file I can deploy the application on standalone WLS and it works normally but deploying on integratedWLS fails with LinkageError.
    If I remove weblogic.xml, deployment doesn't fail, but the application throws exceptions on runtime because of wrong jar versions (that is understandable).
    Why can't I run the application on integratedWLS with prefer-web-inf-classes?
    Thanks.
