unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS
seems to work for me.
dbus should really export a better error. If any dbus dev's show up maybe someone can figure out how to turn this error:
root@me-ThinkPad-T61p:/etc# gedit
GLib-GIO:ERROR:/build/buildd/glib2.0-2.26.1/gio/gdbusconnection.c:2270:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)
Aborted
root@me-ThinkPad-T61p:/etc#
Into:
root@me-ThinkPad-T61p:/etc# gedit
WHOA! DBUS is totally borked because DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS is set. unset it and try again!
Aborted
root@me-ThinkPad-T61p:/etc#

Hi there, it's a known bug since Gconf's upgrade from 2.22 to 2.24, it's filed in Gnome's bugzilla and also in Arch's bug reporting system, here. A solid workaround for now is using sudo instead of su, and I expect it to be solved... soon.
Another not so solid workaround is downgrading to Gconf 2.22 (someone made it available in that bug report, and downgrading does work).
Some people have even had problems with other related stuff, like shutting down/suspending/hibernating. A collateral effect is the greying out of preferences in apps like Gedit, etc.
This doesn't look like the same issue. Am I missing something? -
Hi! My macbook pro is barely working suddenly and I dont know whats wrong. It's not allowing me to open most programs or only one at a time, even trying to type a sentence it keeps pausing for moments at a time. I have recieved error 50 messages about most tasks. This just started today and I tried to disable root user but it wasn't enabled or didn't give an option. If anyone has suggestions or similar problem today I'd really appreciate it! Thanks,
AmberHi Amber,
Any changes recently, hardware or software?
Do you have at least 15% free space on your HD?
Is your RAM being recognized? (Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > Hardware > Memory)
Have you looked in Activity Monitor?
Sometimes a process can run amok and use more of the CPU than it should, potentially causing a slowdown and/or heat issues and/or other issues. To check on this, first use your Mac as you normally would, the longer the better (checking this right after starting up may not show you anything). After you’ve used your Mac for awhile (again, the longer the better), go to Applications > Utilities > open Activity Monitor > in the top menu at right, select All Processes in the drop down menu > click on the column heading titled % CPU (this will update continuously, showing the percentage each process is using) > toward the bottom left of the window, click on CPU (this will show % Idle, which will also tell you how much of the CPU is being used).
How much RAM do you have?
One way to get an idea whether more RAM will help or not, is to check Page outs and Swap used. First, use your Mac as you normally would, the longer the better (checking this right after starting up isn’t likely to show you anything). After you’ve used your Mac for awhile(again, the longer the better), go to Applications > Utilities > open Activity Monitor > in the top menu at right, select All Processes in the drop down menu > near the bottom of the window click on System Memory. If Page outs is more that about 10% of Page ins, and/or Swap used is large, chances are good that adding RAM will help. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342
Exactly which MBP do you have?
Have you repaired permissions? Repaired disk? Reset SMC? -
all of a sudden my itunes wont come up when i hit the desktop icon. un and re installed many times, tried new users, it finally gave me "you need to reinstall sqmapi.dll " im a noob and i have know idea what that is or where i can get it. i cant open any file or library that has anything to do with itunes except safari and quicktime are fine. im about to pull out whats left of my hair.
Okay, that's got one thing ruled out at least.
Can you check something for me, big? I'd like to see if iTunes launches with the Bonjour Service disabled.
In your Start menu, right-click Computer and select "Manage".
Expand "Services & Applications".
Open "Services". (Perhaps maximise the screen to better see what's going on.)
Right-click the Bonjour Service and select "Properties".
In the General tab, set the Startup type to "Disabled":
... and click OK.
Restart the PC and try launching iTunes. Does it open this time? -
i am a OS10.7.4 user. yesterday i bought a Lacie external hard disk but error message appear said " You cant open the applicant LaCie setup assistant because PowerPC applicants are no longer support". please help me how to connect my mac with Lacie??
You do not need the Setup Assistant; in fact, you do not need any software on an external hard drive. I have two LaCie's; I erased the drive as soon as I plugged it in. You will need to format it anyway because most hard drives come Windows formatted. So, if you only want to use it with the Mac, highlight it in Disk Utility and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format and the GUID Partition scheme under Options. While doing that, it will erase the drive (and get rid of the LaCie software) - once finished, your drive is ready to use for Time Machine or any other backup plans you have for it.

A FCP shooter gave me .mov's that PP CS5 cant open, what can I do? I guess she rewrapped the files because as they try to import into cs5 a FCP loading diologe box opens stating: Importing FCP XML.... Afterwards it says i dont have the codec necc.
I'm PC based only.
Here is a link to a short clip that can be downloaded.
I'm really stuck here guys. Cant reach the shooter.
The 5 second clip can be seen & downloaded from Vimeo:
http://vimeo.com/27230969If you tried XD Decode you must think that they originated as XDCam then, right? That is the codec I had to buy and once it was installed everything was transparent and normal. So I'm not sure what the crashing is all about, assuming your system meets the minimal tech. requirements. I'd give it another try if you haven't already.
Your best hope would be to locate the original camera files, which could very well have been deleted following the .mov copying via the Mac. I've had no problem with native XDCam in Premiere. The next best solution might be to have that FCP user do the conversions to another file format you can use. Hopefully there aren't thousands of them.
Firstodd, that's very interesting that your Avid MC was able to work with those files. I just found this from an Avid doc of last year: "If you want to play the exported movie in QuickTime, you need to purchase a third-party QuickTime plug-in. Avid recommends the Calibrated{Q} XD Decode from Calibrated Software"
Still, for the $80 I spent a year ago, XD Decode was well worth it in time saved. I see the price has gone up $50 since then though. -
UPgraded to Yosemite and now I cant open iPhoto. App says it needs to be updated but yet I cant udate cause it says update not available for this ID cause it was bought by another user (I only have 1 Apple Id) or item was refunded or cancelled. ANY IDEAS? Thnx!
Perform the following, stopping with the first one which works:
1. Open the Mac App Store's Purchases tab. If you're prompted to accept it and the other iLife/iWork applications into your Apple ID, do so.
2. Move them out of the Applications folder(they may need to be put into the Trash temporarily), and then see if you can download them for free from their individual product pages. If you're asked to buy them, see #3.
3. Click here, contact Apple, and wait for a response.
4. Buy them.

Can't enable root user in single user mode
hey, im having a problem. I cant enable the root user in single user mode. This is what I do:
1.boot in single user mode
2.I run the command /sbin/fsck -fy
3.I run the command /sbin/mount -uw /
4.I run the command passwd
5.I type the password and then I retype it, but it gives me an error saying passwd: cant change password for root the account is not enabled (thats not exactly what it said, but you get the point)
this worked in leopard, why dosent it work now? can someone give me an alternative way or tell me what im doing wrong?
P.S. give me an actual answer not a why enable root? and I dont want to use directory utility. The command is wrong man. Do the following:
Boot into S.U. Mode (Cmd+S).
once the terminal prompt opens, type the following:
mount -uw / ("mount"+space+"-uw"+space+slash)
launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist
passwd root
(after you press enter it will ask the password for the root user. Type it, even if it won't show any character. Then type again to confirm. Once you had finished type: exit).
Test it and post the results. -

After I downloaded a apps called vipboxsports, I cant open safari.
Since it affects Safari, it may be installed in any of the Library folders listed below. It's probably more of a brower enhancer than an actual application.
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
/Library/Input Methods/
/Library/InputManagers/
/Library/ScriptingAdditions
~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
~/Library/Input Methods/
~/Library/InputManagers/
~/Library/ScriptingAdditions
The first four locations listed are in the root-level Library on your hard disk, not the user-level Library in your Home folder.
The tilde (~) represents your Home folder. -
cant open itunes. get error message 7 followed by error message windows error 127. i have redownloaded new updates with luck. window xp
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

Help me out guys why is this doing this? I just downloaded Maverick a couple days ago. Today I noticed Safari was really erratic, running fast one webpage then the next very slowwwwwwwww loading or not loading a page at all. Sometimes reloading worked sometimes not. I ran a test a speedtest.net, this came back with 33mbps download and 10mbps upload over my home wifi. So I restarted my mac (mid June 2012 MBP) I believe this is the first time I have restarted it since I installed maverick. Now I cant open Safari or Appstore I get the message "Safari quit unexpectedly while using the WebKit2 plug-in." immediately when I try to open these. I have the error report if that helps:

[SOLVED] Xorg not starting on non-root user [My First Linux]
Hello, I recently turned back to linux after digging up my old ASUS EEE 900a, which I messed up with partitioning fun after trying to cram Windows XP on it and etc. Anyways, I managed to fix it, and after Ubuntu being too big, I was turned on to Arch as a good distro, and I've been having a very good time setting everything up so far.
Anyways: My issue arises after needing to use a different user in order to use Chrome. I created a new account and tried to run startx like I usually do. It spat out the usual few lines, but failed and gave me this log:

I've tried looking for this problem elsewhere as it feels like such a newbie problem to have, but I have had difficulty. There are two errors in this log, I think, but they didn't mean much to me... Any help for a linux newbie? Thanks!
EDIT: Solved; as pointed out below, I needed a window manager for a non-root user to use.
Last edited by DJMankiewicz (2013-06-05 07:30:06)Well, soon you'll have to try out one of the more minimal options, in which you don't use any desktop environment but instead you install your own window manager (openbox, dwm, i3, etc) and use small, dedicated programs. Given your extreme space restrictions, I recommend going that route! But, take your time because that requires a bit of learning: you need to figure out which parts of a desktop environment you really need, then you need to learn the proper names for them so that you can search for information, then you need to start fiddling with configurations, etc. Better first to make sure your first Arch Linux installation is up and running properly and to learn a bit about the system before entering that downward spiral.

What are the extra 13 paritions? root user security concerns?
I [was] running Yosemite 10.10.3 on a Late 2014 iMac Fusion Drive SSD and HDD
This might be a bit confusing, and I need assistance from someone who really knows what they're talking about here.
When messing around trying to secure my system, I enabled the root user to view certain files, and accidentally did not disable it when I was finished. After this, I unknowingly ran my computer for probably a month as the administrator with the root user enabled, and made number of downloads in the process (which used the same password as root). After recently realizing this, I noticed in my activity monitor that some of my downloaded application were running as root user, not as administrator, as I thought they should be, and I also found malware after running ClamXav.
Because of all this and my compromised root, I wanted to ensure there was no third party code was deeply embedded in my drive, so I backed my important data, and actually proceeded to (very carefully) separate my fusion drive using 'diskutil' commands, wiping and reformatting everything but the base system. Then, I booted into safe mode to check the "diskutil cs list" and "diskutil list" through the terminal, and was surprised to still find 17 partitions in total, including those in my Logical Volume Group. Command "diskutil cs list" reveals partitions /dev/disk0 as my SSD, /dev/disk1 as my HDD with .efi and recovery, and /dev/disk2 as the apple base system, and ALSO /dev/disk3 as my HDD again (which is an unusual addition to what I have seen as typical LVG diskutil cs list outputs, though I assume it is just be related to booting from recovery mode with no OS on my disk any longer)
Command "diskutil list" reveals these disks (/dev/disk0-3), along with small partitions, dev/disk4, /dev/disk5....all the way up to /dev/disk16. All these unknown disk partitions 4-16 range from 0-4mb in size. One of my main questions is simply what all of these extra partitions are.... are they just required hidden partitions only visible through the recovery mode boot?
Even if so, is there a possibility that my actions explained in the first paragraph have compromised the integrity of ANY of the disks on my drive(s)? I do not want any installs to have access to my root, or to have embedded anything into my core system, regardless of whether they are malicious or not. I did not do a full zero secure wipe, as I figured that would be overkill and wear on my drives, but am also curious if it is even possible that the base system or other core components could have been injected with any 3rd part code. I know I may seem overly paranoid but I want to ensure that my system does not have any security holes from the start, before I go about re-installing all my software again, some of which opens up security holes, but I am required to have it for my work.
I want to note that I have already downloaded a new OS through internet recovery mode onto my reconfigured fusion drive, and do not see these extra partitions when I am logged in as a user, however they still appear in recovery mode, re-affirming my assumption that they are simply hidden partitions only seen through the recovery boot menu. I still have not loaded any of my data however, and regardless of whether or not the extra /dev/disk partitions I noticed are simply hidden apple boot partitions, any advice on whether I should zero-pass wipe any drives and reinstall the OS again to absolutely ensure there are not security holes after having my root user compromised would be greatly appreciated. I could even resort to a full dban and use a snow leapord install disc I still have, but do not want to put extra wear on my drive it there is no chance these core drives were compromised. Sorry for not posting a picture of my terminal output as well; I was unable to setup an ssh connection to do a screen shot from the recovery partition. And thank you ahead of time to anyone who takes the time to read this and give me any advice. These are photo screen shots with the UUID's covered, showing the output of "diskutil cs list" and "diskutil list".
I need to note that I have since re-separated the fusion drive in and then did a secure erase 1 pass of zeros over the HDD thinking that would solve the problem after realizing that these were not apple boot components, but I checked the output of "diskutil cs list" and "diskutil list" again and they were all embedded in there just as before. In response to someone elses comments I have made multiple encrypted .dmg files, but I thought I have only made around 4 or 5 EVER, not all these other ones, and was unaware that they stay embedded in your drive as partitions even after reformatting it. I also see that part of disk one and part of disk three are still fused together as a LVG, which makes this even more confusing. I cannot understand how all these partitions ended up like this, I did not intentionally add a SINGLE partition to my drive, and never separated the fusion drive until just the other day when I noticed all these extra partitions that couldn't be deleted. I'm beginning to the think the only solution is to do a one pass DBAN over both the drives, and then, (hopefully) I will be able to re-attached them in a fusion drive (which I have been able to do once now), and use an old snow leopard install disk to upgrade back to my Yosemite. Is that my best bet, and are there any risks involved with even doing that? If anyone has any other recommendations on a a simpler, safer way to delete all this extra stuff, and just get myself back to the core components so I can re-fuse my fusion drive and download as fresh OS, I would be beyond grateful. -

I think the McAfee suite will do the trick when I pay them a one-time fee of $69 or $179 for a year for unlimited support.
Your call of course but IMO a waste of money. Please read this first:
There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac has NOT been infected by a virus, it may have another security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
